- Windows XP >> Windows XP System ClockI have a problm with my Windows XP. I recently reset the
BIOS on my motherboard, causing my stsyem clock to be
retest. Now when I open up Internet Explorer or Windows
Explorer, I get an error saying "Your system clock
appears to be reset..... blah blah blah...... contact
your admin to resolve this..." After clicking OK,
everything is fine, but this happens for EVERY newly
opened window in IE6 and windows explorer. I even tried
running a repair installation of Windows XP and a
reinstall of it, and nothing has resolved this. I mus get
this fixed!!! Thanks in advance.

- Windows XP Security >> Local Policy for Desktop Support GroupI've been researching this scenario and so far have not been able to come up
with a way to do it.
I need to have a local account called DesktopSupport or something along
those lines that can install/update device drivers, use run-as to
uninstall/reinstall software that requires administrator rights (initially
deployed under admin context with SMS), etc.. however, I need to restrict
the account from being able to add members to local administrators group.
Is their a way to restrict a member of the local administrators group from
managing the local administrators group?

- Windows XP Setup >> New installation cannot download MS updatesThis new installation is apparently unable to download
the automatic update utility. When I try to use the MS
Windows update site, it just sits there.
I have tried to find information in the Knowledge Base
but have not had much luck. One thing I have discovered
is that the registry key related to this does not have
the expected settings. According to KB article 326693
this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update
should have AUState and DetectionStartTime entries;
neither of those is present.
I have tried a Windows repair by booting from the CD, but
that has no effect on this. This is a new install and
there is almost no other software on the computer, except
Norton Antivirus. However, if I were to wipe it clean
and start over I would have to have the cable technician
out again to reinstall that, so that is really a last
resort.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

- Windows XP Network >> PC Remembers Old IP Addresses of Other Network PCsI had to change the IP address range for my home
network. Each PC knows it's own computer name and new
IP address, and the router has the correct computer names
and IP addresses in its DHCP table. However each PC on
the network somehow remembers the old IP addresses for
other PCs on the network.
Example:
I check the IP settings on "Office" and they are
correct (10.1.100.10). I check the IP settings
at "Recroom" and they are correct (10.1.100.11). If I'm
at Office and I ping the Recroom using the IP address
(ping 10.1.100.11), I get four straight clean responses.
If I ping Recroom by name (ping recroom) I see
"Pinging recroom [192.168.1.11] with 32 bytes of data"
and I get four "request timed out" messages.
Somehow, the Office PC is still associating the name
Recroom with its old IP address (192.168.1.11). Recroom
also remembers the old IP address for Office.
Due to this problem, I am unable to share files between
PCs on the network. I have run the networking wizard
several times on each computer. I have verified the IP
addresses, computer names, workgroup, etc. on each
computer, verified the settings in the DHCP table on the
router, reset the router, rebooted both PCs, and run a
number of variants of the ipconfig command without
success. I'm stuck.
Does anyone have any ideas where in Windows XP (or Me)the
system stores the names and IP addresses of other PCs on
the network? I need to erase, overwrite, or something to
be able to access other PCs on the network.
Thanks,
Dan

Windows XP Setup >> Unattended XP install
At our school, we're trying to implement unattended installs of xp.
We've had no problem creating the install shares and the unattended text
files.
But on our test computer we are experiencing problems.
The test computer is a fairly new ibm with 512 mb and a 40 gb hard drive.
We're using the network boot disk from http://www.netbootdisk.com/.
If we format the 40 gb drive with fat32 or ntfs, the install hangs. The
install gives the message that it can't find a large enough partition to
begin.
However, if we use fat32 to partition only 32 of the 40 gb of the drive (I
read to do this on the Microsoft Support site), installation starts fine.
Can anyone tell me how we can start installation using the full 40gb?
Thanks,
Windows XP136

You need to use a third party application to create/format the partition
before you start the installation.
By CD/DVD...
http://unattended.msfn.org/
By network...
http://unattended.sourceforge.net/
Your other choice might be to create a universal image - but I think you
would get more flexibility with an unattended installation.

32gb are more than enough to install xp. Does an ordinary installation
succeed?(not unattended)

I believe the problem is that it limits to 32GB - because the native Windows
XP stuff will only format 32GB FAT32 partitions - thus my suggestion of
using a third party formatter before installing XP.

Windows XP Setup >> Unattended XP install
Thank you both for your input.
If I use the xp cd directly on the machine, xp will create and format a 40
gb partition.
I think the problem with the netbootdisk.com disk I was using is that it
doesn't recognize ntfs. Something along those lines.
But anyway, I have discovered a new toy - Bartpe. This lets me boot into a
machine with an ntfs operating system and read and write to the ntfs drives.
Tonight I finally figured how to add network drivers for my hardware. So
after the weekend I think I should be able to use it to boot to an
unattended install that uses the 40 gb partion.
Oh, and Marinosa - sure 32 gb is probably more then enough. But, just out
of principle, because it's there, I'd like to use the full 40 gb.
Thanks,

- Windows XP Setup >> Start Menu entries for 2 different accountsHi!
I have Win XPPro and I'm sharing my PC with my son. I
created 2 accts with both admin rights so he could
install his programs. I've noticed that whenever I
deleted a prog entry in the Start Menu, his menu also
changed (entry deleted) and viceversa. I understand that
XP allows you to setup accts which should behave
independtly one from the other. What can I do to avoid
this behaviour? I tried by changing his acct to
a "Limited" actt but it did not work. Please advice.
Thanks!

- Windows XP Support >> Ieee1394 networking + activation statusYesterday I connected my newly acquired notebook with my desktop PC, using

informed me I had to re-activate Windows due to "extensive changes in the PC
configuration". But I haven't done any changes -- all I did was changing IP

port for my Camcorder and then re-connect my notebook?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
