- Windows XP Network >> Acessing home network through internetOk i have two xp machines on a network. One wireless laptop (Home edition) and one desktop (Pro). I run this network off of a D-Link 614+ (Ver B). Everything seems to be running great, but I was woundering how I can access this through the internet. I want to be able to be at school somewhere and access my home computer. Does this require a VPN? My router supports VPNs and will act as a virtual server but does that require software for that laptop? I really don't want to go out and buy more software. Can I just set up a private port with a user name and password? And if I can, how? Do I have to do this through my Windows xp or through my router? Any info will help, thanks.

- Windows XP >> Changing Registery Key PermissionsI have been trying to install Flash on a PC and get this error:
error 1904. module
c:\windows\system32\macromed\flash\flash8.ocx
failed to register. HRESULT - 2147220473. contact your support personnel.
Macromedia says that the permissions for some registery keys are not set
correctly. Specifically the key for
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash
The problem machine is not allowing me to change permissions to that key or
any other key that is related to Shockwave. Here are the keys that I have
under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT for Shockwave
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.1
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.3
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.4
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.5
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.6
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.7
I have logged on as the local admin and when right-clicking on the keys
above and choosing "Permissions......" I get the message "You do not have
permission to view the current permission settings for
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash, but you can make permission changes."
When I click OK the Permissions window opens and there are no Group or user
names listed in the box. I can add user groups and permissions to the box
but I can't save the changes when I'm finished. I get the message "Unable to
save permission changes on ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash. Access Denied.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out why I am not allowed
to change the keys related to the Flash application?
Thanks

- Windows XP >> Taskbar temporarily freezes and not visible during startup (XP)Hi-
I am running XP Pro SP2. When I boot up and the desktop appears, the
items in the bottom bar are not visible for about 30-60 seconds until
just before the boot process is complete. Specifically, the "Start"
button, the "Systray" items in bottom right corner, and the "Quick
Launch" items are all sort of boxed out - icons missing. When the
entire boot process is about to complete, they are the last things to
appear. My boot takes longer than it should (over a minute).
I have 2 GB RAM, running an Intel E4300 duo core. I do not think it
is hardware related, unless it is the hard drive, because I just built
a new system and transferred my hard drive - and the problem persisted
(previous system was Athlon XP2700, and the same exact thing happened
there). This Windows build was a clean install only 3 months ago, so
it's not a case of a whole lot of junk accumulating over the course of
years.
I have run Startup Inspector for Windows and the only things that
launch at startup are my soundcard driver (Delta 1010 LT), the video
control center (ATI Catalyst) and "ctfmon". Verified the same with
msconfig.
Any suggestions?
It's obviously not catastrophic, but I would like to fix whatever is
causing it.
Thanks!

I'm not sure if you've resolved your problem, so in case you haven't...
It appears my post (see below) didn't make it to the newsgroup - at least I
haven't seen it there. So for what it's worth I'm resending.

Subject: Re: hard drive refuses to boot after XP re-install
Dan:
In virtually every case following a motherboard change a Repair install of
the XP OS is necessary. In a few cases the system will boot without the need
for a Repair install of the OS but that's not the usual scenario.
We're assuming in all this that you've correctly assembled your components,
i.e., the motherboard and processor (and whatever other components you
might have changed) and that your connections & configuration of all those
components are proper. And you've checked that, right? And, of course, we're
dealing with non-defective components. And, of course, you've checked your
motherboard's BIOS to ensure there are no selected options that might be
causing or impacting on the problem(s) you're experiencing?
Since you've deleted the HDD partitions on your boot drive a Repair install
of the OS isn't viable any longer. Is that not so? So you presumably need to
fresh install the OS which apparently you've tried without success. At least
I *think* that's what you've attempted. So I don't understand your reference
to Recovery console commands. If there's no OS on the HDD what is the
purpose of your invoking Recovery console commands?
But as I review your post perhaps I misunderstand you. Are you indicating
that you apparently *were* able to fresh install XP onto your HDD, i.e., the
installation process proceeded without incident and seemed to come to a
successful conclusion, but at the end it just wouldn't boot?
It would seem that if you did indeed delete your boot HDD partitions, all
your data is gone. I assume you know that. That was (is?) not a problem? You
have a backup HDD?
Again, assuming (as it appears) that we're now talking about a fresh install
of the OS you need only your XP installation CD to accomplish this. There is
no need for a third-party program such as the MaxBLAST one to
partition/format your HDD. Indeed we recommend against the use of those
programs regardless of whether the HDD involved is from that manufacturer.
Anyway, maybe the bottom line in all this is to simply start over. Just try
another fresh install of the OS and see how it goes making sure you delete
whatever partitions have been created. And use only your XP installation CD
to do so. Might help if you have another HDD to use as well.

- Windows XP >> Re-UseHi All,
We have just started on a big rollout which involves a few thousand macines.
The old servers are 2000 with win2000 clients. Then new infrastructure is
2003 and XP.
Within the last few days a new directive has reached us where we need to
re-use as much old equipment as possible in order to achive cost savings.
Basically, the Legacy equipment need to meet a certain criteria before they
are allowed on the new system, they need to be under 2 year old, most of the
legacy kit to be retained are either printers, scanners, plotters and, in
some cases erganomic keyboard and mice.
What i would like to know is given the current build which has restrictions
etc, is there a way of finding out if the old legacy kit could be introduced
to the new infrastructure without installing any drivers?
Any information on the above would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards.

- Windows XP Support >> getting rid of something at startupI'm using Windows XP Home edition.
Recently, I was going to download a program from the web, but I changed my
mind. I said cancel before it was finished downloading.
Now, however, every time I boot-up my computer a window pops up asking me if
I wanted to continue downloading (or running) the same program. I went into
the Run menu and said "msconfig". Under the Startup tab I can see an entry
with the program's name.
I tried to remove that item by un-checking it. But the computer does not
like that because when I re-boot it goes into the
selective startup or diagnostic startup mode and asks me to undo the change
I made.
How do I get rid of that window popping up every time I boot-up. I think
there is also an entry in my registry. Do I need to go to
my autoexec.bat file and make changes there? How do I do that?
Thanks,
Please let me know if you need further information about my situation.
