- Windows XP Security >> Security UpdateI tried to do the http://www.winxpnews.com/rd/rd.cfm?id=040203CO-555027 and I followed all the directions but it still didn't work. I am still having trouble Downloading my update. I keep getting a box that says Software Update Incomplete. To install the updated software and access Windows Update, Interent Explorer secutiry must be set to medium or lower, and active scripting and the download and initialzation of ActiveX controls must be enabled. Note: These are the default settings for Interent Explorer. For more information about IE security and instructions on how to change your security settings, read Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) Article Q174360
I am so tired of this response and want to resolve this problem as soon as possible.

- Windows XP Security >> XP SP2 Windows Firewall Local AdministrationActive Directory environment, 1000 clients.
We manage XP SP2 Windows Firewall settings with domain Group Policy and it
works just fine.
But, occasionally we really need a local administrator (typically a domain
account that was delegeted with complete FULL CONTROL of the entire OU and is
also in the local Administrators group in the client computer) to be able to
log on locally to the client computer and toggle on and off Windows Firewall
for debugging purposes.
I find it hard to believe that once GPO is applied we cannot grant the local
administrator of our choosing the power to toggle Windows Firewall on and off.
Any suggestion is very much appreciated.
Thanks

- Windows XP Security >> Mystery user account status changeOne of my administrator accounts "disapeared" off the welcome screen, from
User Accounts applet and when I finally was able to access it via
Ctrl+Alt+Del twice, it had lost administrative status and locked out of using
any programs. After some investigative work I discovered via control
userpasswords2 that this account was now listed as only a "debugger" account.
I also found that the hidden administrator account was now listed as a
debugger and an administrative account. I know what debugger privlege is, but
I do not know how the heck this account suddenly altered its status, and
slipped off into Never Never Land. I and my spouse are the only two users on
our Home Network currently, I have a comprehensive Internet Security Suite by
Panda, Two firewalls, one software on each system and one hardware on the
Router, no confliction between the two, one computer is a Dell Demension 5150
with a Pentium D 2.8 mhz, 4 gigs ram, 300 gigs hard drive, Nividea graphics
with 256 shared ram, and is approximently six months old, the other is a four
month old HP, with a Pentium D 2.8 ghtz 1 gig ram, 250 hard drive, G-Force
video card with 128 shared ram, both hooked up to a Belkin N Router with
coresponding Belkin N Adapters, two printers and that sums up our Home
Network.
Just one day my husbands account was not listed on the welcome screen and
when I used my administrator account I found his account not listed on the
User Accounts applet either. I did noticed his account was still logged on,
so I did a double Ctrl+Alt+del action and brought up the classic logon dialog
box which enabled me to logon to his account. While in his account I kept
getting "This account does not have sufficiant previleges to run this
program" and it kept popping up for nearly every program installed on the All
Programs Menu. I then logged off attempted a reboot, which of course did not
fix anything, then went back into my admin account opened a command prompt
and accessed control userpasswords2 and there changed the account back to an
administrator account and also took debugging off the hidden administrator
account as it is not needed to be listed as such when it is an administrator
account which has full access to all processes, programs, services, tools,
and full privleges.
I am hoping somebody out in cyber space will have an idea what happened
here. While I was able to fix this rather easily, I am uneasy not
understanding what occurred on his machine. I did a full virus and malware
scan on both computers and both came up clean. I have not had any reports
logged on either firewall of any unauthorized access either, so I am just
rather stymied on this occurrance. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks
in advance,
Seree

- Windows XP Security >> Changing Windows XP Professional Operating System PasswordI have a computer that I would like to give to my daughter. It is password
protected at start-up - not user password. Before I get to Windows XP it
asks me for a password. I have to type in the password in order to get into
XP and the user/adminstrator passwords. Does anyone have any idea how to
change this password on start-up or to delete it all together. This was a
business machine and would not like to give out this password.

- Windows XP Hardware >> USB flash drive issueSeems like lots of people have issues with flash drives. I
have a Lexar pen drive that works just like I want, but a
storix axis one doesn't. At work, XP home formatted the
drive, and I can read or write to it fine there. It shows
up assigned to drive letter E. At home, when I plug it in,
device manager sees it correctly, and says there are no
hardware problems. Win Explorer on the other hand, clocks
for about 3-5 minutes (seems to hang), and will not let me
touch the drive letter, although it shows as assigned to
F. If I force my way through and wait long enough, it says
the drive is corrupt. The manufacturer's site has no
support for it, doesn't respond to email, etc.

- Windows XP Setup >> Sound recorder problemI installed a new sound card because my onboard sound chip was poor. The new
card is Audio Extreme 5.1 (two-speaker setup at present) and works fine with
CDs, MP3s, streaming audio etc.
However I can not get Sound Recorder to detect any sound at all. I have
Audacity but that doesn't detect any sound either. I have checked that
nothing is set on 'mute' and that mixer defaults are OK but still nothing.
Could it be that Sound Recorder / Audacity are still 'looking' at the old
sound chip? If so how can I persuade them to see my new card? The old chip
does not appear in the list on Device manager.

- Windows XP Setup >> ie7 on a new deployed machine automatic settings?I am deploying a bunch of new machines running XP. I use WDS to do the

is this. On IE 7, when a new user logs into the computer. They get that
Microsoft default screen asking to choose settings, etc. I don't want it to
do that, plus I want a specific web page for any user logging in to teh

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Sound Problems...
Over the past couple days, I've lost Most of my PC's sound capabilities.
Most program sounds do not sound (welllll..some are a very Faint
sound)........yet WinXP LogOn/LogOff & a couple other program sounds are
heard, Clearly. Nothing has been added/subtracted from the system.
Device Manager shows no warning signs & am unable to find anything amiss
in Event Viewer. I've checked the connections numerous times & all seem
to be OK. Have already done CheckDisk & Defrag.....no malwares found by
AdAware, SpyBot S&D, or AVG, btw. Nothing is muted, & all audio
properties are enabled & 'volumed'.
Here's the clincher...... I gave up a few minutes ago & decided to post
a question regarding this matter. Miraculously.......a few seconds
later, all sounds seem to have re-appeared! Cyber Gremlins? A similar
situation has occured on this system Once before, with a similar
Unexplained cure.
Please........enlighten me, if you can, as to the cause/cure.

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Sound Problems...
You should probably provide some system info in order for answers.
1. Run sound troubleshooter
2. Check sound card in physical computer, remove card and re-install
3. Possible speaker problems, power transformer......the list goes on

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Sound Problems...
The system was built by a local shop (5 yr.s ago this fall): 1.4 GHz
Athlon, Asus A7V-E MB, 256 MB RAM, CL Ensonic PCI sound card, Altec
Lansing speakers, etc.
However, as I stated in my post..... the sound not only quit
(mysteriously), it came Back just as mysteriously a couple days
later......without any intervention. All I had done was to run AVG,
AdAware, SpyBot, CheckDisk & Defrag. None of which seemed to have any
effect.
Thanks for the feedback, Dale. 8^)

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Sound Problems...
I am not familier with any of the hardware/software you have mentioned.
When I got this "borrowed' computer it had NO sound. After many hours of
troubleshhooting, I finally got inside and removed the sound card and
re-seated it. Just today I had to do this again. Bad connections, old
computer. If you have run troubleshooting for sound card and have checked to
see if all codecs and such are there, I would get inside and re-seat the
sound card.
Sorry I couldn't help more

Thanks anyway, Dale. 8^) All I Really care is that it is Working

place. The 1st time it happened was 2-3 yr.s ago, with the same
mysterious cure. LOL Must be PC gremlins!

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> playback hang-upsWent to papajohn site very informative but no luck for my particulars which are
Video captures fine from my sony mini DV cam and saving back to mini DV gives good results as well. Its the editing and MM clip playback on the MM2 monitor pane that is very unstable and sometimes results in the infamous error report. I should add that the audio is played back without interuption, its really only the compressed video file (I think MM2 call this a movie maker project file) that seems to have the problem in stability, meaning when i play back the (edit in process project file) timeline it almost seems that the graphics card (in my case a graphics adaptor intel 170) is trying to catch up with the speed of the video images, the result of course is a highly unwatchable product. I checked the codecs through the XP direct diagnostic tool and did not see any that matched ones listed at papajohns site.I also tried the settings on the accelerator but to no avail. I should also add that MM2 does save the last edit when there is an error crash (hang-up), a window comes up asking me if I want to retrieve the lost data, so eventually I can finish the edit but what a pain. Anybody have anything new to add? Papajohns comments are always aprreciated.

- Windows XP Setup >> XP SP2 recovery after system restoreI recently downloaded SP2 for XP Pro. On completion, it had substituted all
my emails and address book with an archived copy, thus junking about 200
emails and business contacts. Also startup was inexorably slow with upto a
min to refresh all desktop icons. Having read others issues with SP2, and
figuring it was perhaps not the best move to upgrade, I restored to a point
before download. I was able then to carry on as before viz outlook
express...no problems. Now with more time on my hands, I have tried to start
again with SP2; however whilst the download files are on the drive, windows
has not configured itself to acknowledge that it is SP2, despite restoring to
a point imediately after the initial installation. Also windows update,
appears to see the SP2 update file on the hard drive and therefore assumes
all is well...it isn't. I have tried to remove SP2 using "Add Remove" plus
over methods as described on the Msoft website, however as far as my PC is
concerned, SP2 is not installed and therefore does not appear on the
installed programme list.
Could anybody advise how I can start from scratch and try and install SP2?
