- Windows XP Support >> TWAIN_32 folderHi all,
I have a Dell Dimension 8300 series with Windows XP Home (German) and
Service Pack 2 with all the latest updates.
I have a Mustek BearPaw 1200CU scanner and when I try to install the driver
and panel from the CD, it aborts in the middle of the installation.
I go to C:\Windows\TWAIN_32 and see a folder called: S6U12K
When I click on the folder, I get an 'Access Denied' error and I cannot
browse the folder or delete it, even in Safe Mode.
How can I solve it?
Thanks,
Ivan

- Windows XP Network >> Internet connection really slowWhile logging onto the internet it usually takes about 3
minutes to load up a Web page. Even if not going through

- Windows XP Update >> Unable to update from microsoftI am running XP Professional, Internet Explorer 6.00.2900.2180 xpsp-sp2
........, and Outlook Express 6.0.2900.2180............
When I select on Internet Explorer the option (Tools) Windows Update, I get
the following message:
Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.
To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or
later.
To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet Explorer
Downloads website.
Why does IE think I am running an older version, and how do I get an update
if it thinks the version is not correct?
What is even more curious, this error message occurred at every attempt to
run the update check last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
On Wednesday, I was able to (repeatedly) contact the update site, have
checks made for any required patches, and download as applicable.
Come Thursay and today (Friday), and that error message is back, on every
occasion.
Is this a problem with accessing Microsoft?
I have made no changes to firewalls, security options, cookies, link page
blocking etc.....
Any ideas please?

- Windows XP Network >> It was the firewallI came to the group several days ago seeking the solution to my networking
problem. Several MVPs (Chuck in particular) responded with great info and
asked me to come back to the group and share any insights I might have had.
So in that spirit, here I am and here is what happened:
I had/have a desktop Win2K machine and a laptop Win2K machine that
shared/share files with no problems at all. Then I bought a new laptop with
XP Home.
When I tried to add it to the network, it could share files with the desktop
but NOT with the laptop. I tried everything and finally gave up.
Meanwhile back at the ranch ... a few days ago ZoneAlarm announced they had
a new update to their firewall, and I decided to install it, on my Win2K
laptop. They recommended a clean install -- that is, resetting everything.
Suddenly, out of the blue, the two laptops started sharing with no problems.
Here's what happened: Since the desktop and laptop were already sharing
flawlessly, I was lulled into thinking all was well with them, and that the
problem must lie with the new laptop. But in reality I had made the settings
of the laptop firewall very specific, to allow traffic only with the
desktop. Whereas I should/could have allowed traffic in a more general way
(e.g. "any computer in your subnet").
It was the laptop firewall that was blocking access to the other laptop. By
pure chance, the desktop firewall was set in a more general way and masked
the problem.
Moral of the story: remember that *all* firewalls in the net might
contribute to the problem when a new computer arrives. Re-check them to make
sure they're not blocking something.

Windows XP Network >> Need help in seeing my computer on my home network
I have a laptop with XP on it and two desktops with 98 on it. I can see and
browse the two desktops from the XP laptop but I can only see the XP laptop
from the two 98 computers. I can't open up the XP laptop at all. It keeps
asking for a password? This laptop did come from a campany who had upgraded
and were selling the laptops off. Anyone have any idea how to get around
this? Thanks.

See if the following helps:
Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Folder Options.
On the View page, look at the last line and make sure there's a
check mark next to "Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)".
If that doesn't help, post back with more info about the laptop
such as what version of XP, Home or Pro.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on the XP laptop (and only on that
computer, even if the Wizard tells you to run it on the other
computers). That often solves the problem. If it doesn't, keep
reading.
Is the prompt asking for the IPC$ password? If so, Windows XP is
trying to validate the user name which wants to access its shared
files. The solution is to create a user account on the Windows XP
machine with the same user name and password that you use to log onto
Windows 98.

It depends on which solution you used. If you took the approach
that Steve suggested and created user accounts on the laptop that
are identical in user name and password to the ones on the 98
machines then you might want to check on the permissions that
were assigned to that folder. Right click on the folder, select
Properties and click on the Sharing page. What users and groups
are listed? What permissions do they have? The simplest solution
is to add the Everyone group and give them Full Control. The
correct approach is to add the Users group and give them Change
and Read permissions. Only Administrators should be given Full
Control.
Also, have you logged on to the XP machine with the new
account(s) you created? They don't exist until you logon for the
first time.

It wouldn't change the advice that I gave. My suggestion was to
make sure that Simple File sharing was enabled.
Try this, on your laptop right click on the folder you've shared
that can't be accessed. Do you see a tab titled Security? If so,
go to Control Panel -> Folder Options and on the Advanced page
make sure there's a check mark next to "Use Simple File Sharing".
Reboot both machines. Now see if you can connect to the folder.
Post back with the results.

Windows XP Network >> Need help in seeing my computer on my home network
First off, keep in mind that you cannot share the Windows and/or
Program Files folders with network users. If you're trying to
access either of these folders from your 98 machines, you'll get
that error message. Also, whenever you make changes on the
laptop, you'll have to log off and log back on to the Win98
machines in order to receive an updated access token.
OK. Let's try the following:
Because the folder was originally shared when SFS was disabled,
you won't be able to access it when SFS is enabled unless you
stop sharing it, and then setup sharing all over again. So it's
Stop sharing, then Start sharing.
First, make sure that Simple File Sharing is enabled.
Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Folder Options.
On the View page, make sure there's a check mark next to "Use
Simple File Sharing (Recommended)".
Now, right click the folder you're having problems accessing and
click on the sharing tab.
Make sure that it looks like this:
http://support.microsoft.com/library/images/support/kbgraphics/public/EN-US/WindowsXP/Networking/Ordner005.gif
You need to stop sharing the folder.
Remove the check mark from the box next to "Share this folder on
the network".
Click Apply.
Now, you'll share the folder again.
Put the check mark back in the box that you just removed it from.
Note: If you want to let network users change the contents of
this folder, put a check mark in the box next to "Allow network
users to change my files".
Click OK.
Go back to your Windows 98 computer and log off and log back on.
See if you can now access that folder.
If you are still having problems accessing that folder, you might
want to consider creating a new shared folder, verify that you
can establish network access and then copy and paste the entire
contents of the old folder into the new folder. Once you're sure
that you can gain access to the new folder, delete the old
folder. If you want, you can rename the new folder as well as
change it's share name. Just remember to logoff and logon to
Win98 after making those changes.
Here are a few resources you might want to consult for more info
on XP file sharing:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/filesharing.htm
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/index.htm
If none of this helps, it's a possibility that the company that
owned the laptop before you put some security settings in place
to limit access. That's a whole different issue. Let's hope not.
Good luck.

Windows XP Network >> Need help in seeing my computer on my home network
Glad to hear you've got that fixed.
If you haven't done so already, you might want to post a question
regarding your networked printer in a new thread. You've got a
better chance of getting help that way.

- Windows XP >> Standard mouse won't right-clickHi all,
A friend of mine is having trouble with her standard mouse (PS/2 connection)
on a Windows XP machine. She is using the standard mouse driver since the
mouse is a "no name" bought at Office Depot. The problem she is having is
that the right-hand button doesn't do anything. She's gone into the control
panel and changed its settings, but nothing works. She got a mouse from a
friend and it has the same problem on her machine (although it's fine on her
friend's computer). The person who owned the computer before my friend used
a trackball "mouse", so did something get messed up in the registry? Any
ideas?
We haven't tried reinstalling the operating system yet because that takes a
long time.
Thanks,
Bob

- Windows XP >> Can't install IIS on XPI am trying to install IIS on my XP SP2 box and having this problem
I went to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - Add/Remove Windows
components
I check IIS and then click OK
The installer starts and then brings up a message window that says "Could
not find staxmen.dell" and pointed to C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
I browsed to the path indicated and found the file "staxmen.dll"
I repoint the installer back to the path and still get the error message...
The other part of the error message says "insert XP service pack 2 disk" The
service pack 2 I have is one I downloaded and is a compressed file. I even
uncompressed service pack2 to a temp folder and then pointed the installer
to that folder still IIS won't install. Anyone know why and what I should do
to install IIS?
Thanks in advance

- customize >> organizing folders alphabeticallyHow can I get the files and folders windows to ALWAYS
alphabetize by name without going to Details option?
Only in the first level of Windows Explorer do the files
order as such. One or more levels down and they seem
chaotic with the last file used in the last place.
I can find no way to set a default file order preference.
Thank you

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Task Manager is goneMy task manager is no longer showing up, and I can't find
it through any other means. The only place it shows up is
when I use find and search for it, and then it's a class
file and my computer can't open it. How did this happen
and what do I do? My ctrl-alt-del does nothing right now.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Help - Frequency of Computer Rebooting is IncreasingIn the last couple of weeks, I have noticed that when trying to do multiple
things on the computer, the frequency of fatal error resulting in a reboot
is increasing. It has occurred when doing completely different things. Is
this a potential sign of a certain piece of hardware going bad? Could it be
something with Windows XP?

- Windows XP >> standby problemsI am running a Pentium 2.4 with Windows XP home and whenever I am away
from my computer I put the computer on standby as I've had three power
supplies catch fire and ruin computers. Yesterday I get the message
"the device driver for the 'communications port (COM1)' device is
preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all
applications and try again. If the problem persists you may need to
update his driver."
there does not appear to be any device operating on communications
port 1. The drivers are something like: "serenum.sys" and
"serial.sys"
when I remove these drivers I then get the same message regarding the
modem. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the modem but it makes no
difference.
Please help.
Thanks,
Harry

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Limited UserI have Microsoft Office 2000 Pro installed on a Windows
XP Pro machine. It is a custom install with everything
loaded to the local drive. The user has a limited
account. When she tries to open a JPEG image attached to
an email using Outlook, she gets an open file error.
Outlook is not able to open this file type. If she copies
the file to her desktop she is able to open the image. If
I change the user account to Administrator she has no
problems opening this file in Outlook with Microsoft
Photo Editor. Is there a way to get around this Photo
Editor problem using a Limited account? I'd be
interested in other work arounds using a Limited account
too.
