- Windows XP >> Language difference when upgrading from 98 to XPHi guys,
In a local store there is a good offer on XP Home upgrade version. It
says on the box that it can upgrade 98 to XP. My question is can I
upgrade my english version of 98 to a danish version of XP?
Another question - does the XP upgrade correspond to the regular version
of XP or does it correspond to an OEM version?
Thanks in advance!

René

- Windows XP >> IME, Language Bar - IME Pad wont come upWith XP, I am using the language bar / MS-IME2002
to enter kana/kanji.
I am using notepad and Word (not office XP version) to
actually enter text. My problem is this... clicking
the "IME Pad" icon on the language bar does not bring up
the IME Pad. That means i cant enter Kanji by stroke,
character code, handwriting, etc.
I believe there is a bug fix for Japanese XP having
the "virtual keyboard" not working (which I beleive you
get the virtual keyboard by clicking on my IME Pad icon i
am talkinga bout).
Is there a bug in English XP? A Fix? The button is
there, so I think it's supposed to work ; ) I cannot
find anything about it on the MS website. The only entry
for the ms-ime2002 i could find at all was the Japanese
XP bug. And yes im sure i have ms-im2002 because that's
what the language bar says. Again, everything is working
but the IME Pad.
Thanks for any help!

- Windows XP Network >> Home networkI have 4 computers using HPNA (home phone network adaptor) and a router.
I set up a home network (titled HOME) on all computers.I have 2 problems.
1. Everytime a computer is rebooted I have to re-set up the home network on
that computer. Why is it losing the network setup?
2. I seem to be unable to share one of the printers on the network - a
Canon Pixma ip4000. I went into printers and faxes and selected share
printer. But I cannot see this printer from any of the other computers. Any
ideas why I can not see this printer on the network?

- Windows XP Network >> Network 2000 server, XP pro, and XP home - workgroupHi:
This is my situation:
I've four systems as follow: (A) One PC server with
Windows 2000 server, (B) One desktop PC and a notebook,
each with XP Professional and both joined the domain, (C)
A new notebook installed with XP Home and has its own
workgroup.
Each of the four systems has its own Internet access.
My problems and questions are:
(1) Is there a way for the new workgroup to be part of
domain server and establish some kind of "trust"
relationship, so that they can use the same user account
list in the domain server for file sharing.
(2)In XP Professional and 2000 server, I can browse
domain and workgroup name, and select the computer names
to access. In XP Home, I cannot browse - is it normal and
how can I browse as I did in Pro?
(3) File Sharing: In XP Home, I clicked the shared
folders of the server, it will ask me user name and
password and can be accessed if I entered it. When I
clicked the shared folder of XP Pro (desktop), only a
message box came out saying I do not have the access
right. Not user name and password window will jump out.
How can I solve it??
(4) Any solutions for direct cable connection (using 1394)
between the Win XP pro and XP home? How do I set up for
sharing folders to avoid the need of a server?
Many thanks.
Sincerely,
John

- Windows XP Update >> HP Memories Disc Creator?System: Win XP Pro SP2
Recently went into MS Windows updates to download new updates, I found an
update for some called " HP Memories Disc Creator ". I did a search for this
software on my hard drive but did not find anything. Is this legit? The
only HP related software on this machine that I know of are just the plain
Printer drivers for an old laser jet printer.

- Windows XP >> XP hard diskHi
I need some info about cloning a XP hard disk.
I have a 9 GB HDD (Fujitsu) with XP Pro on it. I don't have original
installable/Key as I got the HDD from a friend when he upgraded his
PC.
After extensively using my PC (leaving it on for long durations for
batch runs etc), it seems the HDD is close to the end of its usable
life. It makes a strange grinding noise sometimes. I am afraid my all
phd work and thesis might be lost if this HDD crashes.
I have a spare 20GB HDD and plan to transfer everything from XP-HDD to
new one. Since I have installed many software programmes, I just wish
somehow if I can just clone the old XP HDD 'AS IT IS' to new HD drive.
Reinstalling everything will be a sure impossible task and I guess it
will require a lot of time. (plus I even don't have XP pro installable
cds)
Can it be done reliably? I looked at similar posts, but most of the
suggestions seem to be trial/not-sure-to-work type. Some comments say
Ghost works for win'98, some say it doesn't for XP.
I will highly appreciate any help, advice.
Thanks in advance

- Windows XP Support >> fuzzy monitor displayI'm using a Dell desktop and flat screen with Windows XP. My monitor
recently has developed a problem, however it doesn't seem to be a hardware
issue with the monitor. The display will become fuzzy/blurry and make it
very difficult to look at for any period of time. It does this on itself at
random occassion. I have not been able to pinpoint a way to fix this.
Sometimes it fixes itself, other times I can make it stop when I go into
Control Panel -> Dislplay -> and then change the theme (other times this does
not work). Anyone have any idea of what is happening and why?? Anyway to
stop this from occuring?? Any help is appreciated!!

- Windows XP Security >> permissions and rights for multiple usersI am the unofficial network guy at the office. Everyone is on XP Pro and we
are networked on a server running SBS2003. We have 15 users (clients) total.
I have a couple of users who have a bad habit of moving or erasing folders on
the server that we all access, then I have to find and move them back or
restore them from my external hard drive backup. Can I easily keep them from
doing this with setting read and write only permissions for these users? I
cant lock them out of these project folders completely, as they need to be
able to creat or modify documents. But I have to keep them from moving or
deleting folders by accident. Any help is appreciated.

- Windows XP Hardware >> USB Device Not RecognizedHello,
When I attach either my Digital camera or MP3 player to my computer I
get the "USB Device not recognized" error message. I then took the mp3
player to my laptop and plugged it in and it recognized it fine. Both
of the systems are windows XP Pro. Any clue why my first computer is
having a problem and how I can fix it without having to reinstall
windows?? I do have a USB Printer that is recognized without a problem.
Thanks for the help.

You can never do any kind of downgrade of Microsoft operating systems.
Downgrades are never supported.
So you can *not* downgrade from Vista to XP. However, if you own a copy of a
qualifying operating system (such as Windows 98) for an upgrade to XP, you
can use that with an XP Upgrade CD. Just do a clean installation of XP by
booting from the CD and deleting the existing partition by pressing "D" when
prompted, then creating a new one. You will be prompted to insert the
previous operating system's CD as proof of ownership.
Two additional points however:
1. If the machine comes with Vista, you may have trouble getting the XP
drivers you need for all its hardware.
2. The manufacturer may consider your warranty void if you change operating
system.
I recommend that you stick with Vista, but if you want XP, it's much better
to buy a machine that comes with XP.

In order to 'downgrade' - you must format and install Windows XP anew.
Since Windows Vista --> Windows XP is not an accepted upgrade path, unless
you have a Windows 9x, Windows MW, Windows 2000 CD laying around you can use
as qualifying media - you must have a full version of Windows XP to do a
clean install.

You actually have two questions here, one is the cost and the other is how
to do it.
Some versions of Vista, *not all of them*, do have downgrade rights. IIRC
it's limited to Business and Ultimate. The idea is that you do not, under
some circumstances, have to buy a new XP license.
But, there's a rather large "But".
*You* have to come up with the valid XP install media and key, and you then
have to contact Microsoft and convince them that you qualify, and then they
will (hopefully) send you activation codes for XP. However, there are
reports that this can take days or longer. Apparently, some CS reps won't
accept some XP install types (for example, if you've used an OEM version,.
you may be disallowed). It isn't a smooth process.
You can't use an XP Upgrade disk with Vista as the qualifier. You have to
present an older, qualifying version, like ME or 2000 (2000 will not work
with an XP Home upgrade disk).
Google "Vista Downgrade Rights"
http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/f/4/5f4c83d3-833e-4f11-8cbd-699b0c164182/royaltyoemreferencesheet.pdf
If you don't want Vista, it's a *much* better idea to not get a system with
it in the first place. Most manufacturers still offer XP as an option at
purchase. You are *not forced* to take Vista.
If you do decide to downgrade, you will have to *first* verify that drivers
are available for all the hardware, and get them so that they can be
installed from CD or local disk as soon as XP finishes installing. You
can't go online to find them if the network card won't work.
You will have to wipe the drive at the start of the XP Install. Delete and
recreate the partition.
You may find it a somewhat better idea to get an entirely new hard disk, and
put the Vista disk away unmolested, so that you can just plug it in when
you're ready to use Vista.
But the best idea is to get what you need in the first place so you don't
have to spend a lot of time playing with the OS install.

You can buy an upgrade copy of XP if you have an older Windows or you
can buy an OEM XP version with a small hardware purchase. The OEM
version is probably less money at $70.

I strongly recommend *against* buying OEM versions of Windows XP. Assuming
that he qualifies for the Upgrade version I recommend that instead, since it
usually costs only slightly more than an OEM version, and comes without the
OEM version's restrictions, the most severe of which is that once installed,
it can never legally be moved to another computer, even if the original one
dies.

Please read the 'fine print" in the warranty of the new machine, when
you purchase it. I have seen several "other" pre-installed Windows
(not Vista) where the warranty would not be "honored" if the Windows
Vista is removed.

What software is that? Are you sure it won't run under Vista? Even in

It depends. If you are a cheapskate like me, you probably want M$ or your
computer's mfg to just give you a free key/license for WXP and let you
install with a friend's WXP installation CD. Example:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/f/4/5f4c83d3-833e-4f11-8cbd-699b0c164182/royaltyoemreferencesheet.pdf
There may be different rules for OEM and Non-OEM Vista downgrade rights. I
thought I had two separate URLs, but can only find the one right now.
Some computers with Vista preinstalled don't have WXP drivers, or may have
their BIOS optimized for Vista and online support chat recommend not running
WXP. Example:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=3340210&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us
I guess you could experiment with a 30-day trial WXP installation without
activating and see whether it is feasible on your hardware.

I don't really think this answers the persons question. That is why I don't
depend on others who cannot just give a straight answer. I did talk to Dell
Tech Support today and you can downgrade to Win XP home edition or
Professional. All you have to have is the Win XP disc and I would make sure
that I have the back disc for Win Vista. Otherwise anyone who says you
cannot downgrade is wrong because you can.

Windows XP >> Vista Downgrade
As long as Vista is preinstalled, yes. However, you need to be aware of the
restrictions. MS has a page for OEMs explaning the program. According to
it, Vista Business and Ultimate have downgrade rights to XP Pro x86, XP Pro
x64, and XP Tablet editions. According to the site, Vista Home Basic and
Premium do not have downgrade rights and XP Home is not an option as the
downgraded OS.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Help with random crashesHi, recently my PC has started to randomly crash, often when playin
games or listening to music. However, this also happens when I leav
my PC to go to the loo... I come back and it has restarted
In the event viewer it says this (this differs a lot, here's what
had last time)
error code 100000d1, parameter1 04f35fc8, parameter2 00000002
parameter3 00000001, parameter4 f94d57c5
Any Ideas? I had a case fan not working, I've replaced that and it ha
crashed once since then. Someone mentioned something about VIA,
don't know what this is but I have installed some program to do wit
it called VIA hyperion
I've also disabled automatic restarts, so hopefully next time i
crasjes I will get a helpful BSOD screen. Any useful info anyone

- Windows XP Security >> Similar to User Accounts Post below.I have a similar issue to rocknroll's post from 3-9. We purchased a cheaper
computer for our 5 year old son that included XP Home edition. He somehow
got into the controll pannel and assigned a password to the XP Welcome screen
and has no idea what he entered in there. I am trying to get by the password
screen.
I have tried to get to the safe mode but for some reason the F8 key does not
work during the boot sequence. I have tried to restore the machine to a
previous date but the F11 key does not work. I had to replace the standard
connection keyboard with a USB keyboard because there is an issue with the
standard keyboard port.
This machine has very little data on it and I would be willing to reinstall
all the programs in order to get by the welcome screen. Any help would be
appreciated.

- Windows XP Setup >> Windows XP Licensing QuestionWhat's the big difference between the full versions at the top of this list,
and the OEM versions at the bottom:
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=508417
http://tinyurl.com/6mztr
I have a computer running Windows XP with a illegal Product Activation Code.
If I purchase a Windows XP OEM version, will the code with it always work
with my puter?
Or do I need to make sure it has an OEM version of XP installed first,
before ordering an OEM CD and license and it being not what I need?

- Windows XP >> Make drive contents privateI'm running XP Pro. I have about 5 physical drives on the machine, one
of them with work files which I want to protect completely from the kids
playing games. All the drives are formatted with NTFS.
I went to Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View and unchecked
"Use simple file sharing", however the option to set the drive private
is still disabled. How do I do this for the entire contents of a drive?

- Windows XP >> Unable to create a Network Setup DiskThe Network Wizard gives me the following error message 'The wizard has
detected that this computer has no floppy disk drives or other removeable
media. You need such a device to create a Network setup Disk'
However I have recently installed a DVD/CD writer (Philips DVDR1648K/00) as
a slave to an existing DVD ROM which normally works fine. I've checked the
driver etc... If I view via 'My Computer' it states that a DVD-RW Drive is
installed, in properties it has a 'recording tab' although the 'hardware tab'
only lists the manufacturer as (Standard CD-ROM drives). If I cannot sort
this is there a way of creating a Disc without the Wizard ?

- Windows XP Setup >> New Hardware detected at startup???On Win XP SP2, IE SP2
I am on dial-up only and confirmed in Control Panel/
Network Connections.
On bootup I get popup that new hardware is detected.
Checking Device Manager, highlighted is "Other devices"
"Ethernet Controller". I don't want this hardware and in
Device Manager have Disabled and Uninstalled. But on
reboot it is back.
How do I get rid of this Ethernet Controller?

- Windows XP Support >> can't install fax--file copy errorI had this file copy error before when I tried overinstalling xp and
everyone said it's a hardware problem. But then I reformatted and did a
clean install and everything was ok, and I could overinstall after that. So
it's apparently a software problem. I'm just giving this background info so
no one jumps to the conclusion that it's a hardware problem. Well, I tried
adding the fax software from Add/Remove Windows components and it prompted
for the disk. I put in the disk and it went to the i386 folder but gave a
file copy error. I extracted the files to my hard disk with Winzip but still
not able to copy. How do I figure what's causing it?

explorer, it shows in bios and in device manager, however
if you click on properties > volumes tab and populate it
says it is unknown, unreadable and 0mg capacity, any help
on this would be great as i have lots of my files there
Thanks in advance
