- Windows XP Support >> Desktop icon cache in XP?I'm in need of a way to save and restore the desktop icon setup in XP
SP2 (without having to go to System Restore). There used to be a file
called "ShellIconCache" that was perferct for this purpose, but I see
it's no longer there any more (yes I've made sure I can see hidden
files). Can someone suggest a good alternative? TIA

- Windows XP Support >> constant logoutsHi All,
I am in desperate need of your help! Recently I installed a new antivirus
software on my computer (avast) and after that I ran windows update. When
both were finished I rebootet my computer and after that I cannot log in any
more. Or to be more exact, I can log in but is logged out again after a few
seconds without any chance to do anything, after the first loggout, it takes
less then 1 second from login to logout. I can shut down the computer but if
I wait a minut or two before shutting it down, I get the question if I want
to installt the updates ( 4 of them) I choose to do this but the same thing
repeats itself next time a shutdown. Seems like something went worng in the
update process...
I've tried every possible kind of startup (safe mode(s)) but it is the same
thing there. I've also tried a repair install but it did no good. I cannot
start the recovery console since I have not got the administrators password
(actually, it is my friends computer, pre installed from factory).
What can I do? I would really like to avoid a reinstall since that would put
me in front of his computer for weeks reinstalling all his software...
Thanks for yours help
Best Regards,
Erik

- Windows XP Setup >> Start-up DelayAs windows loads something with 'Promulgate Universal'
goes wrong.
When I click any user account icon to begin I get 2 boxes
(like alert boxes) which say;
"Unhandled exception:
c0000005
At address: 100016b8"
...which I have to click the 'OK' button before my system
lets me proceed...
Then another box saying;
"PromulGate Universal has encountered a problem and
neeeds to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If
you were working on something, the information you were
working on might be lost.
Please tell Microsoft about tjis problem. We have created
an error report that you can send us. We will treat this
report as confidential and anonymous.
To see what information this error report contains click
here...."
...then I have to click 1 of 2 buttons that read 'Send
Error Report' or 'Don't Send' to proceed with anything.
For the first few months of this I clicked 'Send Error
Report' in hopes of getting help or a reply from
Microsoft. This, in turn caused my machine to go online-
etc...many times when I intended to just work offline.
Well, as far as my reporting being treated as anonymous,
I surely believe them.....needles to say I never recieved
any reply from Microsoft and have clicked 'Don't Send'
for about 5-6 months now. I believe I've even ran
the 'restore' disks process since then without that
fixing itself. big hassle.....
Do I need to go into the 'BIOS'? If anyone can help,
please send me an 'email' about this........

- Windows XP >> Problems Opening office documentsHi,
I have a windows 2000 (SBS) server and 26 stations (mix -
from windows 9x to XP). The problem that I'm encountering
with all the XP boxes is in opening office files,
primarily excel. I've tried office 97, 2000, and XP but
problem still exists. When opening excel files, most of
the time (but not all) I get the following message:
"file name" cannot be accessed. the file may be read-
only, or may be trying to access read-only location or
the server the document is stored on may not be
responding. retry or cancel".
This does not happen with the same file, it could be one
file today and the next a different file, yet I can open
the first file at a different file. The following are
what I've tried and or verified.
1. file is not read-only
2. can be opened (consistently) from non XP station
3. When copied to location station it seems to work fine
4. Changed ports on the switch
5. Replaced NIC
6. Replaced patch cable
7. Relocated station to different office
8. Enabled Opportunistic Locking locally and on server
9. ???
Please help! What else can try?

- Windows XP Network >> Cannot access some files in shared folderMy wife's computer and my computer are connected via our LAN router (and thence
to the Internet). Her computer is running XP Home and mine XP Professional. I
set up a shared folder on my computer so that she could store some files there
and free up some disk space.
She can transfer files through the LAN to the shared folder on my computer. She
also can read these files OK and copy them back to her computer.
I downloaded a couple of files from the Internet into this directory. The files
are .zip archives. I can read these files OK, but she can not access them
through the LAN. Any attempt to copy one of these files to her computer or to
open a .zip file by double-clicking results in the error message:
"Access to <file-path\file-name> is denied.
I created a small .txt file in this folder, and she was able to access the .txt
file. So her ability to access a file doesn't depend on who put it there.
On my computer, in Windows Explorer, when I select this folder and click on the
menu item Tools | Folder Options and select the View tab, the advanced setting
"Use simple file sharing" is checked. Shouldn't this setting let her access
anything in the shared folder.
What is wrong?

- Windows XP Support >> remove entries from 'add/remove programs'How do I remove entries from 'add/remove programs' list in the control
panel? Where is the 'list' stored?
When I click on the program in the list the error message says "cannot find

That file was removed by another program so it is NOT there to find.

This problem persist whether on not power management is

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Erasing/cleaning my hard driveAfter having troubles that I couldn't resolve, I resigned to reinstalling my
OS (Windows XP) figuring to start over with my PC. I thought that by
reinstalling Windows XP, I'd be erasing (or reformatting) my hard drive.
Instead, I've got the OS reinstalled with files from before still on the hard
drive.
I have all the data and software I need backed up and want to start with a
'clean slate'. How do I go about erasing the hard drive and starting fresh?

- Windows XP Support >> Windows XP Fatal error 1603Well, here goes. I have windows XP home upgraded to XP professional. I am
trying to install Olympus Master photo software for my new digital camera. I
have Norton Untilities turned off. Near the end of the installation to the
C:Drive, I get a 1603 fatal error. When I research the problem thru the
support.microsoft.com website it suggests several options to resolve the
problem: Suggestion one: install to a non-encrypted folder--the folder isn't
encrypted. Suggestion two: install to a drive that is not accessed as a
substitute drive: it isn't a substitute drive. Suggestion three: Grant Full
control permissions to the "System Account". I follow the directions to go to
Drive C properties and change the security authorization and there is no
security tab to change the user or group. Any suggestions?

- Windows XP >> XP battery icon remains after hibernate/resume on ACHi there - I have some battery icon confusion and I was wondering if
anyone has seen this:
Operated my Dell XPS m1710 on battery power then when the battery was
almost empty (battery icon visible in system tray, about 10% left) I
hibernated the system....
Came back later, plugged in the AC cord and resumed from hibernate....
battery icon was still showing. In fact the battery icon only went
away after a restart to be replaced with the AC icon.
Seems a bit odd - is this a known quirk of XP, was a tad confusing!?
cheers :-)

service pack installed then the item I want to install.

- Windows XP Security >> RPC issuesThe new worm is part of the rpc problem.
However, I dont have this virus, at least according to a
Nortan scan and checking the regestry for the entries
described. So the worm is not the only thing making the
rpc stop and the system boot. Either the virus has mutated
or been changed, there is a second one, or something else
is wrong. Or possibly contacting infected computers can
crash mine? Not sure on that one.

- Windows XP >> Very weird screw up with naming files.Hello, my name is Mike and I have a problem with some
files on my computer.
In my computer I have some files that are songs that will
not do anything. When I try to play them, they just
say "File not found... Please verify the correct filename
was given."
This is what I think may have something to do with it:
Whenever you try to rename a file and you are typing too
long of a filename, it will not let you go past a certain
length of characters. But a few files on my computer
must have allowed OVER the character limit accidentally,
and now I can't do anything with these files! I can't
rename them, open them, play them, OR even delete them
when I right-click on them or use the keyboard!
The only choices that come up are: Play/Open/Queue-It-
Up/Add to Playlist.../Copy to CD or Device/Open With...
and Send To.
I can't scan them, cut or copy, create shortcut, delete,
rename, or even go to properties.
I'm hoping someone has come across this problem before,
and knows what to do to get these files renamed or even
deleted.
I have Windows XP Professional if this info helps.
Thank you very much for your time,
Mike Sorge

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Pagefile size varies on reporting componentsSystem Information states Pagefile Space - 1.37G
Defrag report states Pagefile Space - 1G
Pagefile setting in Performance Options - 1G minimum & 1G maximum - Custom

Why does System Information report 1.37G when it can't be that large?
I am not using all my RAM anyway, and Performance reporting verifies NO
Paging activity.
Directory list of C:\Pagefile.sys shows 1,073,741,824 bytes. Exactly 1G.

- Windows XP Setup >> Activation status - pendingHi
Don't know if this is being looked into just yet, but
would like to know why the following appears "normal" in
XPP:
Logged in as admin - view system information and it looks
normal
On the same PC with XPP - created standard user account
(not admin) - view system information and it shows
an "Activation Pending (30 days remaining)"
It does not count down, so it's purely cosmetic, but I
would like to know how to get rid of it. System is XP SP1
(all applicable hotfixes). This does not seem to be the
case on XP SP2.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks

- Windows XP Security >> MS Exchange Sever 2000 and Windows 2000 & XPWe are experiencing a problem with User profiles in
Windows 2000 and XP. Sporadically, a user will attempt to
open Outlook 2002 and the exchange server will ask them
for a username and password. Once it asks, it will ask
everytime thereafter. What we often do is recreate their
profile to resolve the problem. Is there anyone who has
had this experience and if so, what did you do to resolve
it?
