ONE suggestion in their email back to me.
I do System Restore and then email works fine again. Why can't Norton
see there is a problem and fix it for us? My friend and I have nearly
a year to go on Norton, and now we can't do live update. I will not
disconfigure the Norton firewall and use the XP firewall because, as
you all say, it isn't the best one. Both my friend and I do not use

I have seen many others complaining about this Norton problem, but no
answers yet. Please help as we would like to use our email. Our

Windows XP >> System Freeze After Critical Updates: XP Home
I posted this in the Windowsupdate group, but no useful replies yet:
I am having a problem with my daughter's computer:
AMD Duron 750 MHz
Gigabyte TNT2 M64 32 mb VideoCard
128 mb RAM
I did a clean install of XP Home in January of this year. The system has
run essentially flawlessly since then, with rare to non-existent crashes or
freezes.
She recently developed a problem where her MSN Profile wouldn't keep the
changes she applied. Probably a cookies issue. While I was at her
computer, I went ahead and applied all Critical Updates that had accumulated
over the last few months. They downloaded and installed uneventfully, with
normal boot-up afterwards.
From that point on, this system would totally freeze multiple times every
day. This would occur during normal usage, browsing the web, etc. Really
nothing exotic. The system would be totally responsive, with Ctrl+Alt+Del
not producing any effect. Have to power down to reboot. I was at the
system for about a half-hour, not doing anything even remotely demanding,
and encountered first-hand multiple lockups.
I found an updated video driver through Windows Update, and installed this
without any problem, hoping to resolve this problem, but no joy.
Fortunately, I had used DriveImage 2002 earlier this year, capturing the OS
partition from when the XP Install was completed, and all her usual
programs, NAV, Zone Alarm, etc. installed, and everything was running fine.
I restored this image uneventfully, and the system again ran beautifully.
I again let XP install all Critical Updates, and the previous freeze-ups
immediately recurred. I do not know which one(s) are causing this problem.
I re-ran DriveImage, and got her up and running again. But unless I can
identify where the problem is, I won't be able to apply Critical Updates and
keep her system up to date.
It seems clear to me that one or more of the Critical Updates is triggering
this problem. Any ideas or suggestions on which one(s) or whether or not
this problem has been identified, with a fix available, would be greatly
appreciated.

In the original clean install, I would look at the possibility that
there is a hardware driver incompatibility that only shows up with one
of the later updates, perhaps SP1. In the original configuration,
monitor Event Viewer for errors or warnings. Additionally, are all
XP-compatible drivers installed, including any chipset or motherboard
drivers that might need to be installed after installation of XP? Do
you find any Intel devices where there should not be Intel devices?

Windows XP >> System Freeze After Critical Updates: XP Home
Hi Don,
I cam to this newsgroup looking for the same info. My IMB
Thinkpad was doing exactly the same thing your daughter's
pc was doing. Even worse, I had to disconnect the power
cord and physically pop out the battery to get a reboot.
Not fun. I can't locate the cause either - I think it is
not one update but a couple of them combined that are
incompatible with each other. I finally reimaged my
machine and am simply NOT applying either SP1 or any
critical updates anymore. I figure since it continues to
run fine without them, I am better off a bit less up-to-
date than rebooting a few times a day. I hope you find
some answers. I am giving up based on what I've seen so
far. Oh well! Maybe I'll try again when (and if) SP2
comes out.

Windows XP >> System Freeze After Critical Updates: XP Home
Thanks for the feedback, Sylvia. Sorry you're also having problems, but it
is a bit comforting to me to know that it's not just some quirk of my
daughter's system. For now, I'm going to do the same thing as you - just
sit tight and not apply any updates for the time being. This is not a good
long-term solution, but will have to do for now unless somebody can more
precisely pinpoint (or fix!) where this problem is originating.
Regards,

Thanks for the reply and suggestions.
I'll check for spyware, but believe this would be extremely unlikely. I did
a clean install of XP, added a few basic programs (NAV, Zone Alarm, ICQ, MSN
Messenger), and imaged the OS partition at that point, before doing any web
browsing or anything.
When I previously installed the Critical Updates I did not disable NAV, so I
guess I really need to try again. I had assumed that since I encountered no
problems or error messages during the Update process that everything was ok,
but this might not be the case. And since I had her system set up for
Automatic Update Downloads, they were done en masse. I guess I could do
them individually, but I suspect the number might be a bit large, making
this somewhat tedious.
With reference to NAV, do I need to do more than just disable "AutoProtect"
from the NAV system tray? That is, should I disable all NAV components from
loading (using msconfig) during boot, or is the disable sufficient?
Thanks again.

Windows XP >> System Freeze After Critical Updates: XP Home
Don,
You should be fine with disabling NAV in the system tray while you are
downloading and installing. Once the system reboots, NAV should come back
online no problem. Depending on when the system first started experiencing
problems, I know when 811493 was first released that it had a significant
problem with virus scanning software. Microsoft has since re-released the
patch and the current iteration on Windows Update should be fine.
It is funny I should be discussing this now. I am at work rebuilding my
boss' laptop after third-party software blew it away. I am in the middle
of a huge (80 meg) Windows Update installation as I type.

Thanks again. I'll try to free up some time this week to work on this. If
my problems persist, I'll repost.
At least this experience gave me the opportunity of putting DriveImage to
the test, and it worked just fine. I use this same strategy with my main
desktop, and although I obviously hope I never need it, I feel a bit more
secure knowing it worked pretty well. I just do periodic images of my OS
partition, with all my images/data etc on the other partition (which in turn
is backed up to an external firewire hard-drive).
Good luck with your boss's laptop.

- Windows XP >> Need help adjusting the task bar?Hey all,
Yesterday, I found myself in a position I had to format and clean install XP
Pro SP2. I have since, got all my post SP2 updates.
I chose to show the quick launch , and have been putting some shortcuts on
it for my programs.
Somehow, I managed to get my taskbar to double heigth, where you see not
only the time, but the day and date below it as well. I prefer having it
just single heigth, where it only shows the time.
I unlock the task bar, and try to drag it down, but cannot seem to do so.
If, while holding the mouse button down and dragging it down, I move it far
enough, it basically dissappears from the screen, showing just a very small
part of the bar, just enough to grab it and drag it back up, to where it is
once again double heigth.
Any tips, on how I can get this back to where it was, would be greatly
appreciated!

- Windows XP Setup >> Problem installing XP PRO over 2000 ProI am attempting to install (upgrade mode) Windows XP
Professional on a system that already has Windows 2000

that all installed hardware was fully compatible. The

hard drive access. The 'splash' on the side of the setup
screen continues to change. Any ideas? Should I just
perform a 'new' installation? I would like to avoid this
as MSOffice and FrontPage are on the system already and
the installation software was lost in a move.

- Windows XP Update >> Server 2003 - Updates download but fail to installHi,
This is very odd, and just started happening today on multiple machines...
It is mostly with Windows Server 2003, but also applies to a Windows XP
box...
Windows Update fails on multiple systems after the update is successfully
downloaded. Here is what happens...
1. I download the updates.
2. I get "Updates were unable to be successfully installed messages".
3. I rerun Windows Update. The updates are missing from the Windows Update
(after I rerun Windows Update).
4. I Have to reboot. After reboot, the updates REAPPEAR in the Windows
Update list. I try to install, and the cycle starts over agiain with #1
above... they are downloaded, but do not install.
On windows XP Professional SP2 box. I got the SAME error as above (updates
failed to install after downloaded), but after the computer restart, they
then show as successfully installed (but how do I know for sure?). However
Security Update for Windows XP (KB917537) keeps showing over and over even
after successful installation. I have reinstalled that one 3 times and it
does not go away.
Interestingly, in the Server 2003 event logs, I get many of the following
error messages all in a row (like 20 or something)...
"The start type of the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service was
changed from auto start to demand start."
Anway, maybe there is a new problem out there with Windows Update...
Thanks!

- Windows XP Hardware >> no native XP CD recording please helpHi
I am running XP Home and recently I have lost my
recording tab under properties for my CD-RW drive so I
cannot drag and rop into the drive as I could a week or
so ago.
I need to get at it to check that enable CD recording is
checked.
I have checked the key in the registry and set drive type
to 2 (as it was anyway) and this has made no difference.
I have also check that IMAPI cd burning is running in
services.
I have also checked for a new driver (drive Toshiba SD-
R5112) but Toshiba say that it is natively supported by
the driver that comes with XP (ie the one im using).
The drive burns fine with specialist software but this is
inconvenient as it so much slower.
If anyone could suggest anyway I might get the recording
tab back I would be really grateful as I really think Ive
tried everything now.
Cheers.

- Windows XP Setup >> can't install security update Q811114After reformatting my hard drive (to NTFS) and re-installing
WinXP Pro with Norton AV, Norton System Works 2003,
and Norton Personal Firewall, I cannot complete the installation
of all the WinXP Critical Security Updates. There are 16
updates to download and install, but after installation of the
first two, installation of Q811114 slows to a creep and never
completes - even after 2 hours and 15 minutes. Is it time to
re-format and start over, or is there some conflict with Q811114
that can be resolved? Thanks for any help.

- Windows XP Network >> Allow intranet, but intermittently allow/disallow InternetI have a small-business CPA customer with multiple Win XP Home (SP2) PCs
networked together via the usual router/switch configuration to allow file &
print sharing. Until recently, only 1 PC could access the Internet and that
was via dial, but they've "taken the plunge" and ordered DSL.
The owner is absolutely paranoid about security and is convinced that while
a PC is connected to the Internet, people could hack in and steal customer
financial and identity-type info. The longer the time the PC was connected,
the higher the risk. With dial, he felt he could control that by
restricting dial access to a single PC (with no customer data on the PC) and
allowing the dial session to last only as long as absolutely necessary.
Given this mindset, DSL has him real worried. I've explained about
firewalls (both hw & sw) and all the other ways of protection and he's
reluctantly agreed to allow all of his PCs to be able to access the
Internet.
However (and here's the problem), he still wants to limit the time the PC
has Internet access. He wants to have some kind of "switch" that a user
would turn ON or OFF to allow their PC to be able to access the Internet.
In other words, if the user is doing internal office work (which requires
access to other PCs or printers on the LAN), the "Internet switch" should be
OFF to not allow Internet access. When the user needs to do email or access
a web site, they would turn the switch ON, do the online activities, then
turn the switch OFF again. But the PC needs LAN access at all times.
I've tried to explain the folly of his "solution" and that keeping the
switch OFF by default would stop all Windows and anti-virus automatic
updates, but he wants to give it a try.
So does anybody know a technique or program that could do this? Since
turning the switch ON/OFF will happen multiple times per day on each PC, the
solution has to be something simple. I envision having to setup some sort
of BAT file that would issue the appropriate commands to turn the switch ON
or OFF. Just not sure if the "switch" is within TCP/IP, the router, or
what.
I done a lot of Googling and found some solutions for permanent
restrictions, but nothing that can be easily turned off and on. I'm looking
for help!

- Windows XP Setup >> Search Function in ExplorerIf I search for files named *.txt" containing "abc", it
does what you would expect; that is, it finds any file
having a .txt extension whose content includes abc. If I
do the same type of search, but the extension is .sql
(or .ora or ...?), it behaves differently. If I search
for files named *.sql" containing "abc", it searches as if
I had specified "*abc*.sql" as the filename. Anyone know
how to correct this?

- Windows XP Network >> XP home edition and setting it up on a router/gateway networkHaving issues getting a PC that was loaded with XP home edition to be
recognized on a network that has two other machines on the network. I have
ran the network wizard between machines. Two of the machines are able to see
each other and share files/printers. The home edition machine is able to see
the other systems in network places but when I try to connect to the other
machine that has XP professional or from the XP professional to the home
edition I get do not have permissions to access. I've checked the firewall
settings and they are fine. I'm to the point of manually setting the IP's
for all machines. It's just these two that are giving me problems.
