- Windows XP >> Moving license from Virtual machine to real machineHi,
I am a developer with an MSDN developer license.
My personal computer is using Windows Vista Ultimate and I have been using
Virtual PC to install Windows XP professional.
I now want to install that copy of windows XP onto my laptop.
Of course I will remove it from the Virtual Machine.
But I am sure that when the Laptop will try to register the copy it will
report that the copy has already been registered.
So I can I move from one PC, (Virtual), to a real PC, (Laptop).

- Windows XP Network >> Network SharesHi there
I have upgraded to XP from ME recently, and after setting up my network
shares again (sharing the D: and E: drives), I have noticed there isn't an
option from the 'Security and Sharing' menu to password protect shares, as
there is in ME.
Is there any way to protect the shares, preferably with different passwords
for each share?
Thanks in advance,

- Windows XP >> Need Help Removing a Photo ScannerI used to have a Compaq/Lexmark multifunction device on my computer; it has
long since been replaced, software and drivers uninstalled. Gone, but not
completely.
If I go into a program like MS Word, PhotoDraw, etc., which allows me to
insert a photo from a scanner, those programs all display a pop-up window
from which I can choose which scanner I want to insert from, and that old
Compaq A1000 shows up in that list. One particular program I have assumes
only one scanner is installed and attempts to use it. Since the A1000 is
apparently at the top of the list, it gets elected, and of course is not
present so that program will not work.
Anyway, I've worked with HP/Compaq trying to get rid of this with absolutely
no luck. Apparently, there is someplace in windows where programs like this
look to for installed scanner devices info, and that area still contains the
A1000 info.
Does anyone know how I can get rid of it?

- Windows XP Setup >> XP SP2 - computer continously reboots after installAfter installing XP SP2 on a XP Pro machine, it does not
get to the startup screen prior to rebooting again. The
second time it does go to the SafeMode option, and safe
mode is bootable both with and without network support.
I scanned the knowledgebase and found one article
referencing a problem with UMAX scanner drivers - however
I have never had a UMAX scanner on this machine.
Any other drivers associated with this behavior?
I do have an Epson Scanner, a Nikon slide scanner and
some USB devices attached.
Seems odd that a driver would cause a reboot...

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Reduction in windows explorer program start up speed
Beginning on Saturday February 14, 2004 my windows
explorer program started taking about five times as long
as perviously to open up. My connection speed remains the
same and once explorer opens everything else is just as
fast as always. It now opens so slowly that when the
program opens it opens in segments.....before it seemed to
just appear all at once. Does anyone know why this might
be occuring? I have run the usual maintainence programs
through my Fix-It Utilities but it did not fix the
problem. I am beginning to suspect that the lastest
automatic windows xp update is the cause of this which is
why I am posting this here. Does anyone know anything
about this or has anyone else noticed the same phenomenon?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Error message NDIS.SYS after running check diskProblem with appearance of blue screen.
Initially system was very slow.
C, D & E drives defragged.
Checked all files with upto date virus checker. No virus found.
Attempted to run check disk on all drives. Drives D & E okay with no
problems. However, unable to do C drive as this can only be done at a
restart. Rebooted and ran check disk on C drive. Went through phases 1 to 5.
But stopped after phase 5 with blue screen showing the following error:
Check with vendor for any Bios updates.
Disable Bios memory options, such as caching or shadowing.
Press F8 for safe mode start up options then start in safe mode.
STOP: 0x0000007E (0x0000005, 0xF84FA570, 0xF8ACC5B0, 0xF8ACC2AC)
NDIS.SYS - address F84FA570 base at F84DC000, Date stamp 41107ec3.
Volume (BOOT/C drive) is clean. Windows finished checking disk.
After several attempts to reboot same blue screen appears. Try to boot up in
safe mode, but same blue screen. I am only able to boot up if I choose the
option to boot up in last good known configuration.
How can I get my system to run problem again? Is the NDIS.SYS file corrupted
and if so where can I find the file to restore?
In addition I have attempted to go back an old restore point, but when I run
this program I am unable to see any older restore point. I know for a fact
that I have set several up in the past.
I look forward to your reply.
Regards.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Unpartitioned FAT32 file system on external hard drive?I've bought a 60GB laptop hard drive+caddy that I want to use for USB
input to my car stereo[1]. I've formatted it as FAT32 using the
mkdosfs utility (http://www1.mager.org/mkdosfs/). (I had to do this
because Windows XP's Disk Management tool won't let you format FAT32
partitions greater than 32GB.)
When I plug the drive into my stereo[2], I get an error message
(helpfully, "ERROR"). A Linux expert who has the same setup in his car
has told me that this is probably because the HD still has a PC-style
master boot record and a partition table with one partition covering
the whole disk. I need to get rid of the partition table, apparently,
and set up a file system starting from block 0. But the Linux guy
doesn't know how to do that in Windows. Any ideas how I go about this?
Thanks,
Francis
[1] Sony CDX-GT410U
[2] The drive is powered via an adaptor for the cigarette lighter; I'm
fairly sure lack of power isn't the problem as the disk seems to be
spinning OK, and the stereo knows it's there (the stereo says "READ"
for a moment before the error message appears).

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Is my CPU too slow? High CPU UsageI have a P4 Celeron 1.8 GHZ w/ over 700 mb of ram running XP Pro
Service Pack2. I noticed sluggishness when I started using the new
Yahoo Beta. My CPU usage was around 100% when scrolling in Yahoo Beta.
Next, I noticed heavy static and cutting out using Skype or other VOIP
type software. I clicked on task manager and usage was 100% during the
periods of static and quality issues. I am running high speed internet
at around 4800 kbps, so know my internet is not to blame. I don't
usually use Skype with any other apps running. I even disable my
anti-virus.
My system idle process can vary from 68-75%, with CPU usage of around
27%. I have checked for spyware and other malware/viruses I am clean.
Just wondering if my CPU is too slow? Or something else is going on?
Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> Recovery Console compatible with SP2?When I try to install the Recovery Console from my XP CD, attempting to run
d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons returns a Windows Setup alert that says
"Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is
newer than the version on the CD. Warning: If you decide to delete the newer
version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files
and settings cannot be recovered."
I'm wondering if Recovery Console is incompatible with SP2. I did have RC
installed and working but probably didn't access it after I applied SP2.
Here are the details...
I have another XP on my E partition that worked fine until recently
(post-XP2, actually), and the boot menu shows the two XPs (C and E
partitions) as well as the Recovery Console. I haven't needed to boot to the
E partition's OS until now, and when I do, it starts to load, shows desktop
wallpaper and a few icons, then goes to a BSOD which disappears to quickly
to read.
So I thought I'd fix it with the Recovery Console. When I select Recovery
Console from the boot menu, the screen clears and there's a flashing
underscore at the top left corner. (Just like the old days, when MS DOS
couldn't find itself.) Recovery Console does not start.
OK, so I decide to uninstall and reinstall. I removed RC as per instructions
in 307654 and restarted. Fine, Recovery Console is no longer listed on the
boot menu. But when I attempt to reinstall it from the XP, I get the above
message.
What's up?

- Windows XP Update >> SP2 blocks C drive accessI sucessfully installed SP2 but now, every time I boot, I get an error

- Windows XP Network >> Cannot connect all computers to networked mopierI've got a mixed network with 4 workstations. The primary network is Novell
for file storage. For printing, there is a Toshiba copier with a network
card and the added capability to be used as a printer and network scanner.
The printer function is connected and working through a standard TCP/IP port
connection on all 4 workstations. The copier has an internal hard drive that
is setup to be shared through the network as part of a Windows workgroup.
The workstations are two tower units with Win XP Pro, one
notebook/laptop with Win XP Pro and one laptop with Windows XP Home. All
units have SP2 and all the latest updates.
The issue at hand is that the laptops are not seeing the shared drive
on the copier. The tower units can see and access the drive with no
problems. I've gone through the same steps with the laptops as I did with
the towers but they still not see the copier. They will however see all the
computers within the workgroup. Also all the workstations connect to the
Novell server with no problem.
I've checked all the workgroup names and they are correct. I've ran
the Home Network install utility which you have to do in order to get the
workstations to see the drive of the scanner/copier. Do the wireless cards
play any role in this? That is the only major difference between the
laptops and towers.
If anyone has any insight into this problem your help would be greatly
appreciated.
Thank you.

- Windows XP Hardware >> SATA Drop outI have 2 x maxtor 160gb SATA drives on my computer (ECS PF1 mobo, P4 2.4 HS
800FSB, 1gb RAM, RADEON 9200). The problem is when writing to either drive
they drop out, I lose them from MyComputer and Windows reports "unsafe
hardware removal".
I have updated the mobo to the latest bios, re-formatted the drives using
Maxtor's MaxBlast 3, re-installed a clean copy of Windows XP SP1 (I had to
buy cos pre-SP1 doesn't support 137+ HDDs) and still both drives drop out.
The computer supplier says it's a hard drive problem or Windows, the hard
drive supplier says it's the Mobo or Windows and Microsoft won't help cos
it's OEM.
Can anyone help? I currently have 320gb of hard drives that I can't use and
this has dragged on a month.
