- Windows XP >> converting to ntfsI understand that I can convert an existing XP partition
to ntfs without fear of losing stuff in the process. But
I have read elsewhere that to do this correctly is a more
involved process than merely running the convert command.
I always keep important stuff on removable media to
minimize loss if and when something weird/bad happens, but
there is some sort of file that I am told I need to create
BEFORE running the convert command.
I'm eager to try the new technology file system and the
EFS and only went with fat32 because I am running a dual
boot with w98 on another partition -- wanted to keep it
symetrical, for no real reason...

- Windows XP Setup >> Upgrade Me to XP on Sony notebookI have a Sony notebook model PCG-FX270 that had Windows ME
installed at the factory. After having this computer for
some time, I purchased and installed Windows XP Pro. At
startup I get a "VAIO Action Setup" error. The message
displayed is:
"It can't start because an establishment file doesn't
exist. Do re-installation."
This is a pesky little message that hasn't caused me any
real noticeable problems but I would like to get rid of
it. Any ideas? Sony won't help because the operating
system is not OEM.

can I make everything available to bot user accounts.

- Windows XP Security >> Windows XP Lock ComputerI have Windows XP Pro clients in a public library
environment. I'm trying to disable the "Unlock Computer"
when it comes out of a hibernate/suspend mode. I tried the
Group Policy settings in Windows 2003 Server but nothing
seems to work. The strange thing is that 4 out of about
100 PC's do not lock when going into hibernate/suspend. Is
this a local setting or can it be done via Group Policy?

- Windows XP Security >> Install of XP Security Update #331953 fails (Downloads OK)We've run the latest downloaded update of Norton Antivirus
and it found no viruses. We then tried to go to the
WindowsUpdate website to download the critical updates for
our XP. We were able to download all the updates, but part-
way through the install process the computer froze up
completely and we had to do a manual shut-off and reboot.
By process of elimination, we found that all updates would
download and install properly except one: #331953. This is
the one that freezes the computer during its installation.
I suppose we need this update to keep our system protected
from viruses. Is there any way to install this update? We
had XP preloaded on our Compaq 1711CL laptop, but Compaq
was unable to help us and refered us to Microsoft.
Thank you.

- Windows XP Support >> virus trojan zlob the slob - is it gone? how do I find out?Hello! This all started a couple weeks ago - started getting a little icon
(an exclamation point) with a little box that would come up saying I had a
bunch of spyware....click this baloon - which took me to a download for some
anti-spyware that I'd never heard of. I did system scan w/ norton - found the
trojan.zlob. The little pop up balloon did not stop, so I looked up
trojan.zlob on the internet and ended up downloading and running Spyhunter
2.8 (Enigma Software Group) which seemed to solve the problem - but was
probably a big mistake. About a week later, I started having severe problems
with lack of space on the c drive - and another pop up balloon started coming
up and I thought it was part of this virus or something and ignored it for a
couple days. After driving me crazy long enough, I checked and sure enough I
had 0% left on my c drive. I went through a lot of crap just to defrag
(downloaded Ace Utilities, ERUNT, NTREGOPT, Registry Compactor). Through
another thread, I discovered that "J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3" was
probably causing some of my problems and I removed it. In the past couple
days I have downloaded and ran in safe mode and normal mode the following:
McAfee Stinger, Trend Sysclean, Ad-Ware SE, Ccleaner, Spybot, Spyblaster,
Counterspy. Many found zlob and two of them pegged Spyhunter as having the
zlob in its backup - but how do I know it's all gone? I've followed all the
directions on the majorgeeks website "malware removal guide" but am a
computer idiot so I have not contacted them. I've also deleted all my IE
Temporary Files, cookies, history, form data, and passwords. I've also done
the disk cleanup and defrag a few times and have now been using the ccleaner
quite often. My concern is 1) Is it gone? 2) Did the virus have something to
do with me not having any room left on my c drive? and 3) I'm only back up to
a whole whopping 17% on the c drive and have nothing left to remove,
uninstall, delete - what else can I do?
Thanks so much for any help!

- Windows XP >> Accessing data on a hard drive from another laptopMy laptop stopped powering up and there was no battery left. It
happened while I was gone to lunch for an hr or so. Any ways, I bought
an external enclosure for my 2.5 hard drive in my laptop hooked it up
to another laptop and could successfully see the drive over USB. How
ever, the most important folder for me is F:\Documents and
Settings\myusername which is now inaccessible. On my old laptop this
was nothing but C:\Documents and Settings\myusername. I need to access
the desktop folder beneath it, which has more folders in it that has
important data on it. As of now it shows inaccessible, 0 bytes and read
only in properties. The drive was on a laptop with win xp sp2 with
NTFS. Any pointers on how to access it will be much appreciated

- Windows XP >> How to turn off file management? In my application I have some areas where I call the Windows File Open
dialogue. Unfortunately some of my customers accidently move/delete/etc
folders while they are there.
Personally I like the ability to do file management within an Open Dialogue
but I was wondering if there was a way to turn off this option so that some
users couldn't accidentally rearrange the folders on their computer.
Preferably, they should still be able to do this within Windows Explorer.
If there isn't then I guess I could write my own File Open Dialogue but that
seems to go against the point of having a built-in one to use.
Any thoughts would be appreciated
Thanks

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Fail to start, turn off and reinstall System Restore*Fail to start System Restore wizard*
During System Restore, my computer failed to shut down, hence forcing me to
press the power off button to turn off the computer. After turning on the
computer, an error message appeared saying System Restore failed and asked me
to do it again. But when I tried to run System Restore again, an error
message came out saying System Restore cannot protect my computer and asked
me to restart my computer and run System Restore again. Same problem occured
after restarting the computer and run System Restore.
*Fail to turn off System Restore*
Then I tried to turn off the System Restore to turn it on later, but failed.
When I checked the turn off box and press ok, an error message appeared
saying error occured when system restore tried to start or stop some drives
and asked me to restart my machine and try again. Same thing happened after
restarting the computer.
*Reinstalling System Restore doesn't resolve the problem*
After reinstalling System Restore by running "rundll32.exe
advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf", I still cannot open the
System Restore wizard with the same error message as before saying System
Restore cannot protect my computer and asked me to restart my computer and
run System Restore again.
I'm quite desparate now. Please help. Thanks very much.

- Windows XP Network >> Strange Network access auth failuresI can successfully run the systeminfo command against a remote machine,
whether it is a DC or member workstation, with the exception of one
workstation.
The command is: systeminfo /s machinename. It works that same as when
running: systeminfo on the local machine. For one machine, when the
systeminfo command is run locally, or through an RDP session, it works as
expected. However, if that machine is targetted remotely, a prompt is
immediately returned in the command shell as follows:
Type the password for domain\user:
Even though correct credentials are entered, the following error is reported:
ERROR: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
There is no logon or account logon failure on the targetted machine or the
DC, despite the error above.
I have examined the firewall and GPO settings (RSoP.msc) for that machine
and others for which the command executes as expected and no apparent
security differences exist.
All machines are WinXPSP2, fully patched in a Win2003SP2 domain. Can anyone
provide a possible reason or sugestions for further troubleshooting?
Thanks
