has worked so far.

- Windows XP Setup >> Welcome Screen & PasswordI am the administrator and only user of my computer. I
recently asked how to bypass the welcome screen and
followed the directions by going in thru control panel.
This is OK however I now receive a box popping up asking
for a password. As far as I know a password was never
set up and I just click OK without entering one and it
seems to accept this but I don't want to be bothered with
this either.
Is there a way of bypassing this?
Thanks.

- Windows XP >> Crashes and screen freezes?I'm using an Amd X2 cpu with a hitachi hard drive 2gb ddr2 ram. I'm getting
screen freezes and program crashes regular? If i leave the pc on and walk
away 9 times out of ten when i come back the screen has frozen and the mouse
is stuck forcing me to reboot? Is it possible these problems would be
occuring due to my last installation which went bad, when I tried to fix that
installation i used the fixboot command in recovery console could this
command have altered my pc's stability? I'm finding alot more crashes on this
AMD system compared to previous intel cpu's? Is anyone experiencing the same
problems? Is it possible I need a better heatsink? Maybe I should leave the
screen saver switched on to keep the pc thinking? Any advice most welcome.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Why repeat driver install process for every USB port? The XP method for installing a new device is the "add new hardware
wizard". This process involves thrashing the hard disk for several
minutes, (usually) manually
identifying the driver location, followed by warnings about unsigned
drivers, more
minutes of disk thrashing, setting a restore point, and then more disk
thrashing.
Sometimes a reboot is required after all that. Finally the hardware is
ready to use.
Next time you connect the device to the same computer, you might use a
different USB port. The device is now seen as "new hardware" and the
entire process described above is repeated.
Why is it necessary to go through the entire driver install process for
each USB
port? The device is the same, the computer is the same, the driver is
the same...
This seems like an unnecessary annoyance. Today's computers have 4 or
even 8 USB ports. Why can't they be logically equivalent? Does anybody
know why this happens? Is there any way to avoid it?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Windows XP Hardware >> Bios
I worded my question wrong on my last question. I have a hp e-pc 42
computer with XP Pro, the problem is the hardrive is failing, will not
let the CD Rom to work or finish scanes or anything else. So I bought a
new hardrive with a XP Home Edition OP system but I`m not sure of what
to do, to install the the new system properly. I`ve read up on the
install procedure and it calls for an update on the BIOS before I
install the new OP system. Can I upgrade the BIOS then remove old
Hardrive and install new Hardrive then install new OP system?

Windows XP Hardware >> Bios
The BIOS doesnt care which or how many hds are running to update it,you only
need to install the update on a MS-DOS formatted floppy, then boot to floppy.
This requires some input from the user, usually after the A:/ prompt, one must
type in the run text, get that from within the update "read me"...Also,you
dont
need to update the BIOS to boot to the xp cd,where that info came from is
false.

Windows XP Hardware >> Bios
If the XP Home Edition is a generic OEM version installation CD, should not
be problem, doesn't care about your bios. If a HP sold version, could be
problem.
Are you updating the bios via a windows XP environment, or from a floppy or
other boot media? If in your current XP Pro environment, and the system
decides to glitch, you could have an unusable system due to a botched bios
flash.

- Windows XP Hardware >> ATTN: ALL SONY VAIO OWNERS WITH WIN XP OSMy Sony Vaio PCG-V505BX arrived yesterday. It comes with Win XP home
edition. I noticed that a few times, even when I turn the laptop on for
the first time last nite, the system would hang for no apparent reason.
Sometimes, the system even hangs at the Win XP splash screen when it's
restarting.
I formatted the HD and put on Win XP Pro. Same result but not as often.
I did a search on google and I noticed quite a handful of posts from
Vaio owners with Win XP having similar issues.
Has anyone tried contacting Sony to address the issue??? There seem to
be some sort of compatibility problems with Win XP. If you are reading
this, please post in this thread or send me an email.
As I type this, I am in the process of install Windows 2000 Pro on the
laptop. Hopefully I'll have better luck.

- Windows XP Support >> Need help with Max File Name LengthI am currently managing a small network and have run into a very interesting
problem. My users are very well organized and love long file names. I was
trying to xcopy some folders to the network when xcopy gave me the
insufficient memory error. I tracked this down to the fact when they created
a folder it was not over the 255 limit when mapped starting as the root, but
once you add the //servername to a UNC for copy the folder is outside of that
255 limit. A friend of mine told me I could restrict the max path or ma file
name length in the registry, but I have been unable to track that down.
Please help me out.

- Windows XP >> Question re: Sharing Folders & All Sub-FoldersWhen I right-click on a folder then select Sharing and Security using
Windows Explorer and check the "Share this folder on the network" and "Allow
network users to change my files" check boxes, that ONLY makes the selected
folder sharable; none of its sub-folders. So, as far as I can tell the only
way to share all of its sub folders is to apply file sharing as described
above to each and every sub folder. Surely there's SOME WAY to apply
sharing to a folder and all of its sub-folders without having to go through
such an ordeal.
How can I apply sharing to a high-level folder and have all of its
sub-folders automatically become shared without having to apply sharing to
all of its sub-folders one at a time?
I shall greatly appreciate your help on this.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Write Delay FailureI was wondering if anyone has encountered this problem. I
have a Maxtor 160G SATA HD and I get write delay failure
error message shortly after booting up. I can see the
drive but 10 seconds later the drive disappears and the
write delay failure error is shown. I am able to see the
drive every time I reboot but it always disappears shortly
afterwards.
Anyone with suggestions as to why this is happening? I
have checked many forums and many users seem to have
different reasons why they occur. This was not the case
for about 3-4 months back. Just a month ago, I re-imaged
the pc and afterwards, it started to show up for no
apparent reason. I haven't done anything such as
disabling services. Everything is at default just as it
is after installing WinXP and update patches (including
SP1).
I am at a lost. Any help from anyone would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

- Windows XP >> Problem with booting XP.Hi all
I had Win ME on my system until I upgraded it to XP.
Obviously this is a big improvement but when I boot XP, I
get the same error twice before being able to start it up
properly. The error is something like
system32/config/system is damaged - it also says to use
the Windows Setup disk to repair the file by
pressing 'r' at the first screen.
I have figured out these are instructions from the old ME
system - if I reboot with the old ME disk, the 'r' is
for 'recover' which I obviously don't want to do unless I
want to take a step back in time.
My XP disk doesn't offer an 'r' option at the first or
any other screen.
Hence why I think there is somethign in my booting up
sequence pointing to an ME file.
Any thoughts ?
