seems to work. Why would my computer do this?

- Windows XP Support >> Interactive Logon Text Screen Removal?I have recently received a few PCs obsoleted by a local company that I
am cleaning up to donate. They all have a text message and title
activated in Interactive Logon that is grayed out when I view it under
Local Security Settings/Security Options. How can I remove this? I know
my way around XP pretty well, but I'm not a sysadmin or anything so
plese keep the explanations simple and step by step if possible. TIA
for any help....

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> SP1 causes slow startupEver since installing Service Pack 1 for XP Home, startup
has lengthened from about one minute to more than three
minutes. The Sygate firewall launch is almost the last
step in startup, preventing Internet or mail access until
it is complete. What should I do about this? Uninstall
SP1? If so, how?

- Windows XP >> Registry Changes Do Not SaveHave XP home setup to login automatically. Have a screensaver set.
When I leave the computer running and reboot, it prompts me for the password
and the screensaver is off.
My workaround was to find the location in the registry for these 2 items and
export it to the desktop. Right before I reboot I run the exported .reg file.
Now on another computer I set it up for wireless. The Trendnet software
didn't work so I told Windows to manage my wireless connection. I set a
static IP address.
When I reboot, these settings are reverted back.
Is there some KB article or something on registry modifications that don't
save on reboot?
thanks

- Windows XP Network >> HTML errors in MSN Groups - help needed desperately pleasePlease can someone help? I run an MSN group, and every
time I try to edit the pages in it, half of the scroll
bar on the right hand side disappears, and I get a large
gap showing between the top of the page and the start of
my text. Then when I save the pages, this is the script
I get displayed at the top of the screen:
<LABEL id=HbSession SessionId="910070065"></LABEL>
I also get the same thing at the top of my message every
time I post messages on the message board.
Not only this, but I get gaps that I have to keep
removing at the top of each email I send from my hotmail
account. I have no idea if it displays the same message
in the email I send to other people, but I strongly
suspect it does.
Please help!!! I have no idea what to do to get rid of
these problems, and they are driving me round the bend!
Any suggestions very much appreciated.
Thanks for reading.

- Windows XP >> I cannot ping a machine on my mshome networkI have a desktop and a laptop connected together on my mshome network using
a linksys router. Both machines can access the internet. I can see both
machines in Network Neighbor. The desktop can access the drives of the
laptop but the laptop can't access the drives of the desktop. When I ping
the laptop from the desktop, no problem. When I ping the desktop from the
laptop, it times out. I can ping the desktop from the desktop, 127.0.0.1.
I can see the desktop in Network Neighborhood. I am using McAfee firewall
not the Windows xp firewall. What else would stop me from pinging the
desktop? When I double click on the desktop in My Network Places, I get the
following error message, "\\BGDesktop is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. and then the network path was
not found.

- Windows XP Network >> Network Adapter issues after deleting files that were spywareHere's the thing I was trying to get rid of an issue where I would constantly
get a winupd.dll module not found error. So I googled it, and found some
threads that lead me to get rid of it. I ran Hijackthis! and LSPfix.exe to
see if they would help. Well I guess it worked, but in the process I must
have deleted something I wasn't supposed to.
I tried uninstalling the driver for the card, as well as Microsoft network
services, and tried reinstalling them afterwards, and I'm not able to get my
adapter up and running properly. Seems like some of the services are not
starting up which is why I can't get the connection. I know it's not my
internet connection because I have a laptop on the same network, and it's
working fine. Any ideas on how I can get my adapter back to the way it was?

- Windows XP >> system re-boots spontaneouslyOK. I've solved most of the problems but a few remain.
Primary: how/why did XP Pro re-boot my computer at the moment I clicked a
file that was on removable media?
Secondary: Why didn't system restore put my system back to what it was
before the problem? (I had to go back and re-establish several important
settings, including re-activating Quick Launch).
Tertiary, and separate: on a single-user computer, why is it necessary to go
to Windows Explorer and enter an Admin. password to be able to change
settings for the Explorer browser?

Now there is no password box - I have to click on my user picture to

I must have done something I was unaware to change this.
How can I change this back?

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> mail attachments no open or save option window
I have an XP machine using Novell Groupwise and MS office
2000 software. When getting a groupwise email and
clicking on attachment, I dont get the window with the
option to open or save. Is there somewhere to turn this
option on/off so I can download attachments to the
directory of my choice? Incidently, we have several other
machines with all the same software that work just fine.
thanks.

- Windows XP Network >> Cannot access internet on one of three computers using networkHi,
I'm at a bit of a loss as a couple of days ago my internet connection
dropped. On Network Connections, it shows as connected to the network, yet
no packets are being sent or received. When I try to open Windows Live
Messenger, error 80072efd appears. I cannot seem to renew my IP address
through the command prompt and have tried disabling and re-enabling the
network adapter (NForce 4).
To top it all off, I started to get Windows messages advising that my copy
of XP could be counterfeit, even though I bought it as an OEM product and
still have the original CD and documents! I have recently changed from
F-Secure Anti-Virus to McAfee, and on running a virus check it found a
Trojan, and also removed 96 invalid registry items...Could this be something
to do with it?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is

troubleshooting, if needed)
I've verfied that all three are running, so i dont see the problem.

- Windows XP >> Windows crashes at startup while loading ntfs.sysMy brother recently had the foolish idea of installing linux on my computer
on a seperate hard drive. It looks like it has rewritten the MBR (which
contained Norton GoBack (I think)). Each time I try to start my system, I get
a "Start windows in safe mode" vs "Start windows normally" screen. "Start
windows normally" gives me the windows logo for about a second, then I get a
flash of blue and it reboots. I tried "Start windows with terminal Support"
(I think that's what it was). Everything runs fine, and then when it tries to
load ntfs.sys, it hangs for a second then crashes/reboots. I've started from
a random LiveCD I had kicking around, all the contents of the Windows hard
drive are still there. It originally had Windows Me installed on it. Then
when we upgraded a couple of years ago to XP, we bought an upgrade CD instead
of a full CD. And either we never got that CD back from FutureShop, or we've
misplaced it. What can I do to fix my system so that I can finish writing my
essay for school? (without reinstalling anything).
Cheers,
Ryan

- Windows XP >> Help/Advice on Reinstalling XPI have a series of problems and I think the only way to resolve them is to
reinstall XP. I have the original XP Pro CD and then I have the SP2 CD. I
assume I need to use the original disk to do the install then use the SP2
disk to install that. Of course that will reformat my drive and I will have
to do all the updates and then install Office and the rest of the software.
Am I correct?
Should take a whole weekend I'll bet.....

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Update size on Hard-driveAfter doing a clean install of WindowsXP Pro, I checked
the HD useage on drive C: using Windows Explorer. I have
set "folder options" to show hidden and system files. The
result was 2.512 Gig of space was used.
I then ran Windows Update and installed 23 of the critical
updates. I again checked drive C: and found that 3.509 Gig
of space was used. This was after making sure that the
recycle bin was empty and the Internet Cache was also
empty.
This is an increase of almost 1 Gig of space or 40% of the
original installation. This appears to be very, very high.
No programs etc have been installed, only WindowsXP.
I cannot account for all of the disk space used. Using
Windows Explorer and clicking on properties for the 6
folders that appear in the root of C:, I get the following:
C:\ 3.509 Gig
C:\Documents & Settings 0.019 Gig
C:\Recycler 0.0 Gig
C:\System Volume 0.0 Gig
C:\Program Files 0.091 Gig
C:\Windows 1.100 Gig
Thanks for your help
