customize >> New HD-transferring files from old one Hi,
I just got me a new hard drive and would like to transfer everything from the
old bootable one to this one. How do I go about it? Any suggestions will be
very much appreciated. The new one is formatted NTFS and ready to go. I don't
want to reinstall Windows and reinstall all of the programs again.

Thanks to all that will reply with helpfull suggestions.

customize >> New HD-transferring files from old one First thing to do is to visit the web site of the news disc's manufacturer:
They may have a free utility which you can use to transfer everything to
your new disc. If not, you'll need to invest in disc cloning software.
Norton Ghost is currently the best known of this type of software.

customize >> New HD-transferring files from old one Can't I do it from a command prompt? By booting into windows? Few years
back I've read about it how to transfer all of the binary files but can't
remember how or what switch to use.

Thanks for your reply.

problems with the transfer of files. They even included the cable. It's made

customize >> New HD-transferring files from old one I believe you're referring to the old xcopy command to copy the hard
drive to another. That only works if your system was formatted as
FAT/FAT32 but not NTFS as you can't quite access ntfs without a
(expensive) third party program. I've done that before but it's not
perfectly reliable as the long file names sometimes get broken when the
short file names get renamed in the process. Example: say you have 2
directories, program files and programs, short file name should be
progra~1 and progra~2, respectively. During the xcopy process this can
be reversed, thus progra~1 would point to programs and progra~2 would
point to program files thus breaking your links in the copy on your new
hard drive. Microsoft has a KB about it somewhere, but it's been some 2+
yrs since I've done this.

customize >> New HD-transferring files from old one Personally, I really enjoy Norton Ghost. You'll never have to worry about
losing data, or even your entire system, again.
