Windows XP Support >> registry repair I made two small chages to the registry in an attempt to change hard drive
designations. I needed to replace my C: drive. Well, now I realize that my
efforts were unnecessary, and now Windows won't boot past the welcome screen.
I can't even get safe mode to work. Safe mode starts properly then shifts
over to normal mode. Now, is there a way to manually edit the registry from
DOS, using a start-up disk? I know exactly what needs to be fixed and where,
I just don't know how to do it outside of the Windows environment. I am aware
of the console editor, reg.exe. Will that work?

XP has no DOS, if you have an XP install disk you can boot into the recovery
console and make the needed chamges from their.

Windows XP Support >> registry repair Hi

Editing the Registry - unless you know ***exactly*** what you're doing -
isn't advisable, as you've found out!! Try 'Last Known Good Configuration'.
If that doesn't work, then you can try a 'Repair' install of XP - depending
on what kind of XP CD you have. It's not possible to manually edit the
Registry from 'DOS' as there are several files involved - sorry.

Windows XP Support >> registry repair Well, I seem to have my machine mostly working again. Abigail, I tried your
suggestion first, but it didn't quite pan out. Apparently, there were no
saved restoration points in existance on my machine except for one that was
created within ten minutes of my trying that solution. It did allow me some
use of my computer, though. So I then tried Will Denny's solution, and
conduct a repair installation of Windows. That almost worked as well, as I
now have even more funtionality of my machine. There are a few things which
still don't seem to work. There's a major problem with Security Center. It
has little to no functionality. The Windows firewall won't work. Windows
Update won't work. And it is causing problems with my antivirus in that it's
auto-protect function was disabled until I reinstalled it. Then the
auto-protect function was disabled once again. And my system tray seems a
little funky. Program icons which should be there aren't, yet they are
actually running. And every time I reboot, it seems that one or two trade
places with the invisibility game. And for some reason some sort of
advertisement for a registry repair program keeps popping up on my desktop
when I go online. The same problem developed at the same time with a borrowed
laptop using a different ISP. THis never happened ever before.
