switching to switch from one account to another and then back the screen goes
black and I am unable to switch back to the original user account. I have
to reboot the computer. I can log off of one user account and then log onto
the other user account but it defeats the whole purpose of Fast User
Switching.

- Windows XP Network >> More file/printer sharingHi folks. First let me say that I have tried to solve my issue by reading
through previous posts but as yet have had no luck, so i hope someone can
help me.
I am running a home network with a dektop and a laptop, connected directly
by Cat5 cable. The desktop connects to the internet via internal dial-up
modem.
The desktop is running XP Home and the laptop XP Pro. Both are updated to
the hilt. Desktop was previously running McAfee PF+ but it has been
uninstalled. After reading a previous thread I found and followed
instructions for a deeper manual uninstall.
I have run the home networking wizard about 300 times. ICS works fine.
Desktop can see shared folders on Laptop, but Laptop cannot see any shared
folders, or the printer, on Desktop. If I try to map a network drive nothing
comes up under Desktop, and if i right-click and choose Open I get the
following message:
"\\Desktop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions.
Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at
this computer."
Hope you can help. Let me know if there is any further info you need.

- Windows XP Basic >> Mouse ProblemsI just purchased an HP ball mouse.. generic except for the brand name if you
know what I mean.. but it works ok except for when I am scrolling on a
page.. or on my hard drive. I have disabled the wheel, as I never use it..
but when I am looking at the page, the page moves eratically, (up and down)
once I click on the page it stops doing that.. is there a setting somewhere
I can tick! thanks so much.. Rainy
ps. looking forward to when I can purchase an optical mouse sometime in the
future but up till then, I guess I am stuck with the ball mouse.. :(

i accidentally set an exe file to always open with word
pad. now i cannot run any exe file. i try to open
regedit, and windows restore, but they cannot find a
program to open with. can anyone help me reverse, or undo
this.

I'm not good at computers, and my 2-yr old home PC (a Compaq Presario)
has been giving me a lot of problems recently. I need some assistance,
please, and many thanks in advance. (I'm now surfing the net using a
borrowed laptop.)
My PC uses Windows XP, Home Edition.
When my PC starts up, it goes into EITHER the blue screen of death OR
just a blank, black screen.
When it's the blue screen, the following technical information is
shown:
STOP: 0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XF8B71B06, 0XF9D89564, 0XF9D89260).
I don't know what that means or how i can fix the error.
When I reboot, I can go into safe mode, and restore my PC to an earlier
system check-point, but my Norton can't check for or correct any
registry errors in that mode.
I know there's already some threads in this forum on 0x7E errors in
general, but i can't find any with the specific "technical info"
combination shown in bold above.
once again, if anyone can help, i'll greatly appreciate it. thanks!

The Standby (orange) button is also 'greyed-out' on shut-down.
Prior to this it appears IE7 got installed before SP2 - Why, I dont know, as
I have Microsoft Automatic Updates!
Due to the conflicts the above updates were creating between themselves and
other applications, I tried uninstalling IE7 (so I could start from stratch
and begin with SP2) but got a warning that, if I do this, programmes etc
installed after IE7 will not work properly if they are dependant on it. How
would I know? (There are quiet a few; mostly Windows updates!)
IE7 still does not work by the way ("Page Cannot be Displayed" error) so Im
using Firefox to access internet - which is not ideal when Ive found certain
downloads/media players don't work with it.
It has been suggested to me that an essential file may have been lost - how
do I know/find out?
Can anyone please help.

Without going to far in depth, I am considering doing a repair install
of Windows XP because of the problems that are accruing after I
transfered everything over from my old hard drive to my new drive (see
http://tinyurl.com/5922fv for the full details of my previous post).
The main concern that I have is not losing all the app's/files that I
already have installed; how safe is repair install? What are the odds
of losing everyting? Note: I have created a backup on a separate drive
using the Windows XP Home backup.
I do have my Windows XP reinstallation CD (provided by Dell), what I
can not find is the key; is there a key required when you do a repair
install?
Do you have any suggestions/recommendations that may not be already
posted throughout the web?

system and am wondering if I can slave the old hard drive
and transfer the information to the new system rather than
trying to put the old one back together and trying to
transfer it through a network.
I have win xp pro on the old hard drive and it is a maxtor
30 gig.
The new system is xp corporate and the hd is 250 gb
western digital.

I have several Pentium 4 3.2 pcs running win xp pro and Office 2k pro that I
have deployed to replace win 2k pcs running Office 2000 pro. We are also
moving from Mcafee to Sophos. Some of the new pcs have the Sophos. A number
of my people are complaining that Office is running really slow for them on
the XP computers. When I rehook them back to their win2k pcs they are fine.
Why are the newer and more powerful pcs running slower? Any suggestions would
be most appreciated

hi
Latest pcs also run lot of applications. Check what all application
are running and how much resource are they taking in the task manager.
Clear any unnecessary applications from loading at the startup. Clear
all services which are not required.
Delete template file normal.dot from the system drive. If normal.dot
is corrupt, it will slow or freeze Microsoft word.
When the system is slow, check if the hdd (harddrive) lights are
blinking heavy. Possible too much of hdd access. Harddrive might be
badly fragmented, Run defragger on the harddrive.

had seen better days, it started being very unresponsive so i went out and
bought a new one this time i went for an Packard Bell optical mouse again
optional PS/2-Usb again i am using the PS/2 port.
The problem is that the pointer maybe sat idle on screen or i might even be
using it in an application and then all of a sudden the poiter has jumped to
a random place on the screen.
Even though i installed the software that came on the disk it still appears
to be using the MS one!
Can some one shed any light on this Rodents annoying habbit please.

- Windows XP Network >> XP to XP slow opening folder over the networkI have a client with simply 2 brand new Compaq Presario
desktop PC's -- both identical -- running Windows XP Pro
(upgraded from XP Home) with 512 MB RAM, Pentium 4 - 2.4
Ghz, and 120 GB hard drives. They also have Realtek NICs
and I've updated the NIC drivers already. I also installed
new NetGear NICs and disabled the onboard RealTeks.
The client has a brand new NetGear 10/100 Mbps switch, all
cabling is CAT 5. Whenever they go to access a folder
over the network that contains 1,000 or 2,000 files, it
takes between ten and twenty seconds for those objects to
appear using My Computer or Windows Explorer. It seems to
take even longer when accessing those folders over the
network from MS Word, using File, Open. Does not matter
what VIEW we use either. This happens even if we connect
both PCs via a crossover cable.
However, if we hook up a Windows 2000 PC, a Windows Server
2003 PC, or even an OLD Windows 98 PC, it opens those
folders over the network instantly! And, on the local
machine, access is super fast. Also, we installed a
different hard drive with Windows XP on it (just for
kicks) that is fast on another computer, and still
performance over the network is slow. It seems that
either the NIC or the motherboard is part of the problem,
but we don't know for sure. A new Dell notebook running
XP is also slow opening those same folders over the
network!
Nothing that we've tried has worked. Here's what we've
tried:
1) The first thing I would check is if netbios over
tcp/ip is enabled on both machines. Many will argue that
it is no longer needed but that is not what my testing has
revealed.
2) Turn off simple file sharing, to allow classic file
sharing based on username other than Guest and password,
go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, and
uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)". Click on
OK. Then reboot.
3) What Virus scanning software is installed on the
systems? Has it been reinstalled since the "upgrade" to XP
pro? I would recommend uninstalling it and reinstalling it
with a reboot in between. Please be sure it is then
updated with all the recommended virus definitions and
engine upgrade the vendor recommends (there are a few
particularly bad bugs going around right now)
4) On the XP operating system a unique "feature" I have
seen cause problems it the c:\windows\prefetch folder I
would delete all the items in that folder. They will
dynamically recreate any required files and I have seen
this "clean up" resolve several explorer performance
issues.
5) Make sure you install the latest service pack for
Windows XP and for Office XP.
6) You had mentioned that performance is worse on the
network. The following command will reset the TCP/IP stack
to the original configuration as far as all performance
settings (in Windows 2000 the equivalent would be
reinstalling TCP/IP, which cannot be done in XP). type the
following from a command prompt
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
8) As a last resort you could try disabling the indexing
service, ironically on very large file structures it slows
down performance. The downside is you will not be able to
perform searches of the file system on the machine it is
disabled on.
9) Run adaware, it can e obtained from
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ The standard
version is a free download, you never know what it might
find.

- Windows XP Network >> Possible DNS problem with user ID?I'm moving computers from a server in a workgroup to a new server in a
recently created domain. 28 out of the 30 computers have been joined to the
new domain without any problem. I upgraded one of the users (already
successfully joined to the domain) to a new computer. To do so, I used Norton
Ghost to copy the old hard drive, ran a repair using Windows XP Pro w/ SP1,
updated to SP2, and downloaded all the updates from Microsoft Update. I can
no longer connect the user of the new computer to the workgroup server unless
I do so by using the IP address of the workgroup server.
If I ping the workgroup server by name, I get the error â??Ping request could
not find host <server name>. Please check the name and try again.â?? If I ping
the server by IP address, I get responses every time. Iâ??ve tried using
â??ipconfig /flushdnsâ?? and then using â??ipconfig /releaseâ??, but I get the error
â??The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this
operation. If I try to run â??ipconfig /renewâ?? I get the same error message.
It seems like it has to be machine related because I can sign onto other
computers with the userâ??s ID and I have no problems connecting with the old
server. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

- Windows XP >> Screensaver protected by password - I really need to know thisI know how to make my screensaver so it's password protected on resume. The
problem is that when the screensaver is disturbed, it shows my wallpaper in
the background before the password is put in instead of whatever the top
window is. Since my wallpapers aren't always family friendly, this can be a
problem if and when the screensaver is disturbed when some easily offended
person is within view of my screen. This has already happened once. How do
I make it so that when the screensaver is disturbed, the background shows
whatever window is on top instead of my wallpaper?

and is has preconfigured settings such as the location of the "Save as"
location and the Exchange server settings. I did this once before awhile

The 85' cat 5 cable does not have any crossed pairs. I tested the cable ends
of the RJ45 plugs with an ohmmeter and all are correct. They are the same on
both ends. Any other thoughts as to why this cable won't transmit the signal
from the D-Link DI 614+ wireless router but WILL work with the signal from
the Ethernet port of the cable modem? A 10' ethernet cable will work with
the router.
I am trying to get my wife off my back about her internet connection not
working consistently with the current HPNA 2.0 connection. I wrote about
this previously in a message but got no replies. This message is copied
below.
I have a home network set up all with XP machines. The main machine, on a
cable modem, is connected with the other two with a HPNA net that has worked
well for several years. In the past few months the laptop which is connected
as a client machine has begun to intermittently come up with the message
that the network cable is disconnected and of course does not work at that
time. Sometimes it comes and goes a very few seconds or minutes and other
times it will work for longer periods. I thought it was the HPNA adapter so
I changed it to a new one a USB Netgear. It essentially does the same thing.
No amount of fiddling will make it work consistently. All this time the
other client on the HPNA net works without any problem. I have also run an
telephone extension from another room just to check it and it does work but
is also at longer intervals seems to stop working and the network LED on the
adapter goes out while the USB light stays on. Here is a really strange
finding. If at this point I connect a telephone to the HPNA adapter in the
provided jack for a phone and lift the handset and get a dialtone the
network immediately starts working again. When it eventually stops working
and the network cable is disconnected message comes on I can again lift the
phone handset and immediately the whole thing works again. I have decided
the problem must be in the computer itself and am considering reformatting
and doing a clean install of XP to see if that corrects the problem,but I
thought I would seek advice before I did it. This same laptop works ok on a
wireless network but I don't want to use it because of portable telephone
interference. It also works on an ethernet cable but not on an 85' cable
that it would take to reach that room if permanently hardwired. I would need
some kind of ethernet booster?? Any thoughts? Thanks.

play a trailer in Yahoo movies, I get a message that says "WMP cannot play
this file. If the file is located on the internet, connect to the internet.
If the file is located on a removable storage card, insert the card." I used
to be able to play trailers. I thought it might be my video card but if so
wouldn't I have problems playing videos in WMP?

could change my background(the values it added would not allow it). After I
Restarted windows I got the " no active desktop" message.I think I may have
removed more than I needed. Now there is a grey column covering the left side
of my screen that wont go away. Any way to fix this?

channel on it's own to which station some one was watching the last time it
was on... if it was on channel 59 and you turn it on to channel 4 this
morning, in about 2-3 minutes, it will return to channel 59...

- Windows XP Security >> What is wfdtez.exe?I have this process called wfdtez.exe running on my
machine. It tries to hit the internet but I have
ZoneAlarm configured to deny it.
I have scoured the web for info on this process,
including Microsoft's site and Google, but I get no
matches. I am wondering if I have a worm/virus and am
pondering just deleting/disabling it, but I worry about
what might happen if it is, in fact, a necessary
component of windows.
Any help anyone could provide would be greatly

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Update on slowdowns and SP1 installI allowed the installation of SP1 express to sit for over
and hour, and eventually it did install fully, despite
the "page file" error that many seem to be experiencing.
However, I'm STILL getting the massive slowdowns that are
caused by the page file system. It automatically loads the
entire page file system with a ton of stuff (I don't know
what), and causes the computer to become virtually
useless. Who can I complain to to fix this? What's their
email? Thanks.
