- Windows XP Support >> Can't open outlook98 pst filesI installed XP on my new motherboard which would not run windows 98. I kept
Outlook 98 and its been running fine for several months. I'm now trying to
open personal folders (.pst files) which I had on '98 and they are asking
for a password. I didn't create passwords or multiple users when I
installed XP, and didn't use them on 98 either. Is there a way to get to
those archived folders?
I see a "log off mark" option in the start menu but I'm afraid if I do
that, something strange will happen as I've never done that since
installing XP. If it thinks I've made a password for mark, I'm dead.
Thanks in advance,
Mark

Windows XP Hardware >> Dead Hard Drive
Hi, I have a hard drive that recently stopped working due to a fall
onto carpet from about 2 feet. It is an internal Seagate drive,
mounted in a Dynex (Best Buy brand) external case. I've been
researching what my options are to salvage my data, but I'm confused
on a few things.
First, I'm unsure whether or not my error is from the logic board
failing or from a mechanical failure within the drives/platters. The
drive starts up fine and begins spinning, but after a few seconds
stops, pauses, and starts again. There is NOT a clicking noise,
however. I've heard that this is the same as the drive clicking, but I
am unsure. I've read recently that people have had issues with logic
boards being broken/fried, so I was wondering if this could be the
problem. Perhaps buying a copy of the same drive would allow me to
replace the logic board with the new, functioning one, saving me a
considerable amount of money from asking a professional to extract my
data (something I can't afford). If it is not related to the platters,
it seems my chances of data are better.
How can I tell if it is a logic board error or a platter/mechanical
failure?
Also, if it IS mechanical, does anyone know any methods to get the
data? I don't need all of it so I don't need a terribly long uptime,
but there are some things on there I'd really like to have. The only
method I've seen that seems to work at all is to freeze the drive for
24 hours and hope the parts shrink and slide into place. However, I'd
like to do this as a last (or close to last) resort, as the
condensation can damage the drive permanently.
If anyone has any help, please let me know.
Thanks,
Adam

Well...have you opened the case and inspected the internals
for any loose components, cables, etc., and re-seated them.
Saw any broken parts? How about borrowing another external
case (or buying one...they're cheap) and testing the HD in
it? If it works, then it would have saved you the sum for a
professional data recovery outfit to the work.

Windows XP Hardware >> Dead Hard Drive
I did actually test it with another external drive case from an old
drive; same thing happens. The computer seems to recognize that a USB
object has been plugged in -- it makes the beep when you plug it in/
unplug it, but it doesn't recognize the drive. Thus, I'm not sure how
any disk utility programs would work if they can't access the drive. I
could be wrong, as I don't know too much about them, but it seems as
if the drive won't show up in My Computer, there wouldn't be a way to
use a disk utility?
If I'm wrong, please correct me, as I would love to be wrong and be
able to use a utility. I think it's the drive though, as it spins,
stops, spins repeatedly while it's on, and it runs extremely hot as
it's on longer.

Windows XP Hardware >> Dead Hard Drive
Might try connecting the HDD internally, as a Master or slave, on an IDE
channel, to see if the drive is able to show up in the BIOS, device manager,
disk management or my computer areas..
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=How_to_install_an_additional_hard_drive_using_Windows_XP_Disk_Management&vgnextoid=2cfd04d2e817f010VgnVCM1000005106090aRCRD
If it can be seen in the BIOS or OS you might stand a good chance of
recovering your data.. If not then you will need to seek professional data
recovery services..

Hope things work out..

Windows XP Hardware >> Dead Hard Drive
Hi,
......condensation can damage the drive permanently.
Once upon a time someone suggested putting the drive in a plastic bag
then surrounding the bag with ice to keep it cold when you try the
freezer test.
Can you get your hands on an identical drive to try the board swap?

- Windows XP Setup >> program NOT respondingWhat really gets to me is why I downloaded that update in
the first place. I had a serious error this last week, the
blue screen and everything. It seemed like all was lost.
Then it came back and immediately the MS error program
told me that I had a serious conflict and it needed to be
addressed. I then sent the report in as it requested, in
the past this has been very helpful. 24 hours later I
checked the statics of the error and they report Iomega
had a serious problem but a patch was available. I went to
Iomega and in fact there was the patch. I have updated or
checked for them in the past and this one never did come
up nor did it when I tried this time to see if it would
require it. Ok I downloaded and installed the patch to
prevent another crash of this nature. My Total Burn has
worked wonderfully since we went with XP last November. I
had EASY CD 5.0 when I had ME but knew that it would not
work with XP. I got the Total Burn for next to nothing and
it worked flawlessly. In fact I was not going to purchase
any other EASY CD 6.0 because Total Burn worked so well.
Now when the system crashed I was NOT using Iomega and do
very little. But after downloading the Iomega Patch to
avoid the crash my Total Burn LOCKED UP EVERY SINGLE TIME.
I lost 10 Cd's it would not certify. I am not a happy
camper believe me. So I went out and purchased EASY CD
6.0. It worked fine twice and now it too is locking up.
SWELL!! I am so discussed with Iomega and MS for making it
sound so bad and now it is. I uninstalled all my Iomega to
the point my CD Roms would not work and I had to reinstall
drivers. When I sit here and think how a week ago I could
make a CD and go to sleep until it finished and now I
don't know if it will get or not. RESTORE did not help,
nothing has, so my pain goes on, it just never certifies.

The Data entry for both the Default Taskbar and the (Personal) REG_BINARY

- Windows XP Setup >> Fail to startup after deleting Internet LogsHowdy--
Kind of new to Windows XP so please bear with me...
I have not installed SP2 yet and it had been advised that I install
ZoneAlarm Pro
I bought ZoneAlarm Pro 4 a little less than a week ago, installed it, was
hit with a virus (which Avast! claimed to have caught- four files were
affected but now I am having the following problems...) updated the ZoneAlarm
software through their website and things started acting wierd.
I could surf ok but when checking my email (not using Outlook) those
websites were SUPER sluggish. In fact it took over 90 seconds to download a
page in some cases. I am using dialup but it has NEVER taken that long
before and refreshing does nothing.
A user on the ZoneAlarm forum suggested disabling ZoneAlarm, Rebooting in
safe mode and then deleting all the files from the internet log file
(C:\Windows\Internet logs). I did this, rebooted and now I just get my
wallpaper at startup and no taskbar or icons.
It is a rather lovely wallpaper and all but access to my computer would be
nice.
I can ctrl+alt+del and get into the task manager and was able to copy some
of my critical stuff to a disk fortunately but I have no idea what to do at
this point short of reloading windows XP.
I did create a restore point BEFORE I installed ZoneAlarm Pro. Can I get
back to it somehow?
Also, when I boot from the Windows XP cd-rom It has a repair selection but
it takes me straight to dos. typing dir gives me a directory of 5 columns:
date time a------ bytes used fn.ft
xxx xxx a-d---- 1200 fn.bat
(the second row is kind of an example)
I know that third column is telling me something but I don't know the third
columns language. There is a string of 8 characters and each position has a
specific letter assigned to it and I assume it refers to the file it is
associated with. Might it be telling me if one is damaged or not?
Anyway, any help would be much appreciated,

- Windows XP Setup >> Max number of usersWhat is the maximum of users I can create in XP? Besides, Administrator,
Guest and John Doe, is there a physical limit? how about Win 2000? The boss
wants everyone to log onto a single computer with their unique user ID (but
not at the same time). Thanks.

- Windows XP >> Taskbar Buttons GoneHey there,
this morning when I started my computer I realized that my Taskbar Buttons
where gone. (*) I tried to get it back but I just can't find an option
anywhere that could return them.
Minimized items appear to be closed but in fact the are not since the are
still visible in the Task-Manager. The only way I can open minimized items
right now is with the Alt-Tab function or "Switch To" in the Task Manager.
I called Dell support and they told me to "Create a new User and transfer
the data", since the Taskbar is still available on the other users and the
guest account.
I hope anyone can help me.
Thanks
Nick

- Windows XP Network >> I can not share files between Desktop and LaptopBoth Desktop1 and Laptop running windows xp pro. I can share files between
the Desktop1 and another desktop (Desktop2) which runs windows xp home.
I can ping Desktop1 from the Laptop.
I cannot ping the Laptop from the Desktop (neither 1 not 2).
I have been through this checklist
(http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/specificbroblems.h
tm), with no luck.
I don't know what else to check.
I have no firewalls enabled on this network.
I have simple file sharing enabled on all.
File and printer sharing is installed on all.
TCP/IP is the only protocol used.
Can someone please help me here?

- Windows XP Security >> access to "manage auditing and security log"I have many PC's running Win XP that connect to a AD domain with W2K3
servers. Most run the Microsoft updates just fine, but one PC was telling me
that I didn't have permission to install updates. This occured under either
local or domain admin accounts. I looked in "local security settings" and
determined that the only permissions to "manage auditing and security log"
were for a group called "domain\Exchange Enterprise Servers." I was not
allowed to add or change this setting. I worked around the problem by adding
the domain admins to the "exchange enterprise servers" group in my domain.
Now I can run the updates just fine on this PC. However, I'd really like to
get the administrators group to have "manage auditing and security log"
permissions. I'm worried that if I ever remove this computer from the
domain, no one will be able to install updates.
Any suggestions?
