- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Welcome screen-black-rebootIn a new Western Digital harddrive -fresh install of Xp-home-patched to date on Aug11
and an internal card reader installed on Aug 15 by repair technician service. He did
a double check on the new hard drive( partitioned c and d) and the older second hard
drive with his utilities resulting in a healthy report.
Aug 19 at the welcome screen it was a very fast, black flash and restart to the
desktop.
Today- power on -starts booting-(summary code rolls by, beeps) windows sliding blue
bar-then welcome screen arrives.
This morning it sat with a busy hour glass. Shut down with the tower's rear power
switch.
Restarted and boot up procedure started and as the welcome screen appears screen goes
momentarily black and a reboot occurs. This time the welcome screen has a busy
hourglass for a second or two and the desktop appears.
When I go into the manager to uncheck 'automatic reboot' a dialoque box pops up
referring to the page file. The page file has been set to be on the second partition
of this harddrive-no page file on partition C.
This was a new 'message' for me and I didn't fully understand it so I backed out of
that. In the previous hard drive configuration I could uncheck that and discover what
the 'stop error' contained when this reboot happened (On Aug. 11/06 that previous
Samsung hard drive was proceeding to die-the stop error was signalling the correct
thing)
I'm not sure what to do with this 'uncheck auto reboot' and resulting message re
page file and reports. I'd like to get a report to see if its hardware or
whatever....

Other info that might be relevant as to why I'm getting these load up halts or redos.
The event manager has had a 'Warning'report all along regarding the Userenv at start
up and shut down. I did use the System Mechanic clean up on Aug.19 and that warning
has not shown up 8/19 or /8/20
The only other error is Internet Explorer did a Fault bucket 133169037 - result of
using the 'Thestar.com' website which just shuts IE down if I click on a link in that
Toronto Star newspaper site. This error happens on my other computer also so I figure
its a fault with that website.
One additional software installed Aug.17 WinHttrack -to download my website (basic
stuff that I use daily was installed Aug, 12-14)
The services that are disabled are Alerter, Clipbook, Human Interface Device,
Indexing service, Messenger, Network DDE, Network DDE DSDM

- Windows XP >> New mail msg at welcome screenWhen my welcome screen comes up, under my logon name is the msg "You have 1 new email".
I'm confused becase this xp home machine has no email setup on it. Is this a system msg? Also how do I retrieve it or stop it from showing up.

Anyone know what this might mean? Even though the errors are there the
machine seems to function properly.

been working fine for about a year.
Haven't installed any software recently or added any hardware.
Current Norton AV flags system as being virus free.
Every so often (about 15 minutes, but it does vary)
the system just locks up. Mouse pointer sits there, system doesn't respond.
ctrl-alt-del doesn't work.
have to re-boot system.
I have noticed that every few minutes, the primary hard drive kicks in
- don't know if this is relevant or not.
Any ideas out there?
oh, I have added a couple of cooling fans recently, they suck air in from
the front over the hard drives - possible overload on system psu?

- Windows XP Setup >> XP uses 2000 driver for RISWe had to recently start purchasing Dell GX280 as replacement for the
previous GX270 which is no longer available. GX280 has an onboard Broadcom
57xx Gigabit Ethernet adapter, so wouldn't load a WinXP CD-ROM-based RIS
image because the necessary drivers weren't available. I followed the
procedure in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/246184/EN-US/ to add the
Broadcom WinXP drivers, but was still getting the error msg "The operating
system image you selected does not contain the necessary drivers for your
network adapter...".
After stuffing around for a bit, I copied the Windows 2000 Broadcom drivers
as well into the i386 and , and the RIS build then worked!! Can't figure out
why an XP RIS build should need 2000 drivers, but that was the fix.

they create havoc when I am online. My computer wont let
me or Norton Utilities delete these new files. Anyone
know how I can delete these files??

controlled by Group Policy." In the Security Center, the option to change

- Windows XP Support >> System restore stopped & will not startThe System Restore Tab in the System Properties dialoge box has disapeared,
so I can't start it that way. I tried starting it via Computer Management
but I get an error message stating "Error 5 access denied". Maybe that's a
permission issue, but I'm using an admin account. I tried booting in safe
mode and using the other admin account but that didn't work either.
So how do I start system restore? And how do I get the system restore tab
back in system properties?

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Recording video onto media centerI have the Hauppauge WinTV2... I have a video camera with the cables that
connect to the WINTV2 box (the video, audio ight, and audio left
cable)...here is my problem... Windows Movie Maker doesn't acknowledge the
fact that there is a video device connected, and the video won't play in the
media center. I don't see the video showing up at all in the media center tv
guide - live tv option. All I see is normal cable channels and no "video-in"
at all. The media center "help" section is really bad about the whole "help"
thing, there aren't that many topics to choose from and nothing about
connecting video to the WinTv2 box or media center.
What can I do? What am I doing wrong??

- Windows XP Update >> missing add/remove programmecan any one help me on this. lost my add/remove, and have a nasty little
download i want to get rid of. cant find any down load to help me. can some
one direct me to a point where i can fix this problem. i am not a computor

liscense agreement dialog that appears after presiing nter
on the setup screen.....PLEase help with these issues, ive

Let me get this straight. You had a virus. Since removed
but you can't install anything using Installshield?
Installshield saves various files locally for
uninstallation purposes. Something is probably corrupt.
Best bet is to contact Installshield. Contacting the
developer will be useless. They know how to create the
installer package but not diagnose install issues.

I reinstalled the software by reformating the hard drive
and reloading. Still get the same error.
My hardware configuration is a ABits IC7 motherboard with
a Seagate 80G SATA hard drive and 2.6GHz, 800MHz FSB
processor. I enabled the SATA1 interface and loaded the
drivers at the point identified in the initial setup.
Looking for answers.

- Windows XP Setup >> install Kensington USB Bluetooth AdaptorI am trying to install a usb to bluetooth adaptor,
http://us.kensington.com/html/9403.html, on XP machines with non admin users
that have roaming profiles.
Each user has their own adaptor, but for some reason each adaptor when
plugged into the machine wants to install the non signed drivers.
I tried modifying the built in widcom driver to include my device but not
all componets will install without administrative rights. And our
application will not recognize the built in driver software.
Does anyone have ideas to install the software so our users will not have to
be admins to be able to use their adaptors?

workgroup computers. Get workgroup name is not accessible. The list of
servers for this workgroup is not currently available. We can ping the other
computer(s) and see them in a net view but can not get to them or their
resources.

- Windows XP >> DWWIN.EXEThe Dr.Watson program that detects errors is failing to initiate at closing
due to the Windows XP is being shut down. What could it be picking up as an
error when I am shutting down my computer.
Another area I have been having problems is with the free earthlink
protection control center that is actually an Authentium antivirus and
spyware program. After installing the program it runs fine for about 3 weeks,
and then my computer starts to crash to the blue screen approximately once a
week. Microsoft error reporting (Dr. Watson) informs that is the Authentium
Program (grtdimon.sys). I have spoke with earthlink, and they have no clue of
the issue, except to uninstall and reinstall. Which I did and after 3 weeks
it starts all over again. Has anyone else had this problem?
The two above problems started at different times.
Does cleaning your registry keys with such programs as registry fix actually
do anything? I ran the free demo program by registry fix it claims I have 512
errors, but need to purchase the program for $37.00 do fix the errors.
Thank you for any imput and ideas regarding the above issues.

I'd like to schedule this. I can't find a script that creates a unique
file name for the BKF file. A name that includes the date, or is an
ascending number would be great.

I was wondering if it would be possible to create a dual boot with Windows
XP Pro and Windows 98 SE. The problem is that Windows XP Pro is already
installed and I now want to create the dual boot with Windows 98 SE. Most
sites however seem to recommend to install Windows 98 SE first and then
Windows XP Pro. And I don't feel like spending the whole day, at least,
taking backups and reinstalling programs.

- Windows XP Setup >> Boot can't see primary partitionI am trying to enlarge my 4 gig hard drive to a 10 gig one
I used partition manager to copy the whole primary partition to the new
drive, including the OS..
I then did the same with the extended partition. Partition Manager now
shows me what it is supposed to, that there is a 3.5 gig NTFS primary
partition and the rest is a FAT32 extended.
Now the computer wont boot into XP using the new drive: It gets into an XP
boot screen (so something went right), continues for about ten seconds and
then tells me that it cant find autocheck and reboots.
Trying to repair tells me that it cant recognise the NTFS partition as such
and trying to reinstall XP OVER the present installation from the boot discs
gets me to a screen which shows the extended partition as C: and the primary
as E: Needless to say it wont let me do a repair or reinstall on either,
possibly because for some unknown reason, it seems to be seeing the C:
primary partition as an OS/2 boot partition.
Is there any way around this? I cant find a boot disc which will let me copy
all the info on the NTFS C drive to a directory on the extended partition
prior to doing a full FDisk, format and reinstall on what it thinks is the
OS/2 boot partition, prior to copying all THAT directory onto the newly
created C drive again so that I can preserve all my software without having
to reinstall it again. I don't suppose fdisk /mbr will do anything will it
(doesn't SEEM to be anything to do with this autocheck file which seems to
be stopping the present 'installation' of the OS from booting)?

One particular app (MAS90 accounting) runs EXEs that are stored on a shared
folder on the server and are accessed by the workstation via a mapped drive.
For some unknown reason, one workstation, two days ago, began to display this
message when opening the EXE:
The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this
software?
As I recall, the classic answer to this problem has something to do with
trusting the LAN in IE. However, I do not think anything has changed on the
network.
What causes this? I have seen it happen before - a workstation or server
suddenly decides it no longer trusts EXE run across the LAN.

I have just installed movie maker and am trying to undertake some editing. I
find that when I add clips to the timeline and try to play them, I get sound
but no picture in the preview window which makes editing very difficult. I
have saved to HDD using both the formats (WMV & AVI) and this makes no
diference.
Any suggestions?

Why the Regional setting doesn't work. For example, the standards and
formats are "Japanese" and Location is in "Japan" (for example Time is
11:00:00). Then if I change the Location to Singapore, the time will be
10:00:00. This is OK. However after a few minutes later, the time is reverted
back to the Japanese time (11:00:00). I can do this many times, but it seems
that the time is auto restored. How to solve this problem, it's very
frustrating....

the clock (eg, "volume" or "windows messenger")
However the yellow pop up text box is partially obscured by the
taskbar! I've never seen this before.
Is there anyway to force the popup to sit on top of the toolbar so that
I can see the text clearly (it is intensely frustrating to see the top
of the yellow popup but no text, especially when I am wanting to see
how much battery time is left)

- Windows XP >> Disk Cleanup keeps locking upDoes anyone know what might be causing my disk cleanup to
lockup. I run the cleanup every so often and it's always
worked fine. Recently it has been locking up and I have
know idea why. I tried to use system restore with no
success. Any suggestions is appreciated. I'm using WinXP
on a 2.0 gHz with 256 RAM. It usually took about 15
seconds to run the cleanup, but today I left it running
for about an hour today just to see if it would unlock
itself, but nothing happened. I've also already rebooted
several times , scanned for a virus, and ran the Dr.
