- Windows XP Network >> P.C. not assigned I.P. address. Using Cable Modem to WiFi router.Basic setup is as follows:
Cable Modem (NTL) connects to WiFi Router. This is functioning for my
laptop which is picking up the WiFi signal, and thus happily networking
to its hearts content. However I have attached my XP Pro P.C. to the
router, and do not appear to be having any joy with a physical
connection. I have tried both a USB and ethernet cable to connect to
my router, but neither connection seems to be instigating a network
connection, visible to me as an open connection. I would have guessed
a hardware failure of my onboard LAN, but the USB too?
Any ideas or suggestions?

- Windows XP Network >> Weird (port-based?) connection/web access problemI can connect to the web with MS:ie6 Ok, but not with ie7 or Firefox. Also
can't connect with Thunderbird or Skype, nor connect to Microsoft to register
new software.
Mail (outlook express) will send (SMTP, port 25), but won't receive (POP3,
port 110) unless I run telnet, port 110 TWICE (yes, once alone won't work) (I
found this by chance when trying a colleague's suggestion). then it's OK.
I connect (when I can) via a direct LAN connection to a 3com wireless ADSL
router with inbuilt firewall.
I have shut down (Zonealarm) firewall and (temporarily, to test) AV software.
I occasionally run Spybot, and have tried checking and fixing Winsock, in
case that was the cause.
Some very clever colleagues are foxed by this. I sense it must be something
to do with ports, which I don't really understand, and I worry that it might
signal some malicious intervention.
I think it all started around the time I accepted an invitation to 'upgrade'
my Skype (which I have now uninstalled), but can't say for sure.
Any suggestions, please?

- Windows XP >> can't create registry keyI tried to install software and I rcvd an error that it could not
create a registry key in HKEY_USERS
I opened REGEDIT and confirmed that I can't create a key here.
I can create a key in any other HKEY_... folder.
I have an ADMIN user and my user which is also an admin account.
XP SP2 with all updates.
what do you think is wrong now??

- Windows XP Support >> Problem with IE with multiple logonsI'm quite new to XP (just got a new PC and am running XP Home Edition). I have
two logons, one for me and one for my partner. If I leave Internet Explorer
open under my logon, she is unable to open or run it under her logon. She gets
a runtime error coming from Visual C++!! Is there any way to allow me to
leave my copy of IE running and allow her to be able to run it under her
logon?
Another thing that happened was when I plugged my digital camera into the USB
slot and it fired up the camera's software, later when she came to login
(and i
had closed everything) she found the same bit of software had fired up under
her logon (when she was at the logon screen she was surprised to see "1
program
running").

Home Edition. I had a Corporate version of Norton
Antivirus that was compatible with Windows98 but not
Windows XP. I failed to remove this version prior to
installing the Windows XP upgrade. I can now see the
software listed in the Windows Add/Remove list, and I do
have the option to Change/Remove but when I choose to
remove this application it does not get removed. Can
someone tell me how I can remove this unsupported version
so that I can install a Windows XP compatible version ?
With all the virus warnings I really need to have my
protection current. This is very critical to me. Thanks
to anyone who can provide assistance here.

uninstalled EZ Firewall and installed Norton Internet Security. Now I can
not access the internet while my Norton Internet Security is enabled. How do
I clear the firewall settings in Windows Security Center?

get the Progress bar or the estimated times and files controls to show
during the backup. Do I need to change some settings? Thanks.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Sound ProblemsLately i have come across a sound problem, i could not
play any sounds. I dont know why it started. so i
reinstalled the drivers and during the install i am asked
for these folders stream.sys from the microsoft 2000 disk.
The file is located in the drivers.cab file which is
zipped. Firstly i tried this and it didnt work so i
unzipped the driver.cab and put the neccesary files into a
folder and installed them from there. Again this did not
work.
I bought a new sound card with different driver details
and same problems came up. Im working with no sound which
is pretty annoying. Please help
Also i have check in [my computer/control panel/sounds and
multimedia] under the sound tab the play button is greyed
out, under the audio tab all devices are greyed out, and
under the hardware tab there are these details:
-2 cd drives
-standard gameport (built in)
-game port for ESS (on sound card)
-ESS Solo-1 pci audiodrive (WDM)
-audio codecs
-legacy audio drivers
-legacy video capture devices
-video codecs
all say devices are working properly.
AGAIN PLEASE HELP!!!

- Windows XP Hardware >> Formatting this HDDOk heres an unusual one for ya. Im trying to fix an old computer for my
mother. She just uses it for surfing the internet and a little word
processing. The hard drive has failed and just so happens I have an old DVR
with a Nice 40gig Seagate drive. Can I use this drive in the computer? When I
hook it up Windows recognizes the new hardware, tells me its ready to use,
but it doesnt show up under My Computer so I can format it. Any ideas?

- Windows XP Security >> How to Enable Stored User Names and Passwords in XP SP1Hi All,
I have a XP SP1 with a hardened configuration that has disabled stored user
names and passwords (from the manage users control panel app). There is no
"Add" button. Whenever I access a network resource (when I am not logged on
to the domain) I am prompted for U/P, but there is not check box to remember
password.
I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that I can enable this functionality via the
registry. Does anyone have instructions on how to do so?

It will not *require* formatting the hard drive, but it would be a
Really Good Thing To Do. Back up your data and clean install. Then
reinstall your programs and restore your data from your backup. In the
long run, things will probably work better that way.

Does that come from a poor install of a program ?
My neighbor asked me this question and I couldn't answer , so I thought I
would ask here.
Can this folder just be deleted and forgoten as long as everything is
working ok ?

- Windows XP Support >> Network Printing Very SlowI am using an HP 2200 printer on my home network - 3 PCs all running XP
Home.
The printer was networked and working fine until I had to change things
about a bit at home. I was temporaliy using the HP as a local USB printer
for a few days whilst I was getting the ethernet cabling sorted to my new
office. Once that was finished I reconnected it as a network printer again.
Problem is that now printing is taking 10-20 mins, even though I can access
the web-based admin interface on the printer no problem. I have noticed
though that after printing svchost service is hogging memory resources until
the print job completes.
Computer is 2.8GHx Celeron with 896Mb RAM, so RAM shouldn't be an issue.
Any ideas?

This is related to updates which i downloaded on my online Windows 2003
based servers.As download installation completed,my servers went off giving
the following errors:
1, win32:Access is denied.
2, You do not have the rights.
I was not even able to the access my diskmanagement and backup utilities.
Finally i removed the same updates (October-2005),and my problem was
solved-Thank God
Kindly help how i will update my server.

- Windows XP >> defrag not removing redI moved into new office with computers already in place. Running xp pro. I
have tried to defrag but defrag will not remove all the red lines that
indicate fragmented areas and go to blue like defrag usually does. It will
derag only about half the bar and leave half in red. Can anyone tell me why,
and can I fix this. The computer is working fine, but sometimes hangs up a
little.

- Windows XP Support >> HELP: winxp broke my mp3 player... woes :SI got a generic USB flash MP3 player (I think). It looks like one of those
generic players pictures on:

. It doesn't even have a brand name on it. It's was my girlfriends player
but she gave it to me.
It was working perfectly until I decided to format it using Windows XP
format (right-click on drive and format it). The USB MP3 player device still
gets detected and picked up by Windows and I can move files onto it. However
when I try to use it to play songs, it says 0 out of 0 songs found.
I think I messed it up. Do you know what I can do? Maybe it doesn't like
FAT32 and I should format it using FAT?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Win XP Secutiry UPdate KB908531I have recently installed (4/16/06) a number of Windows Updates. After
completion I notice that there were a couple of problems:
1.) In Windows Explorer the left pane of windows explorer(directory tree)
would only display the 1st level of the directory struture. All lower levels
could be acccessed in the right pane by double clicking on the folder. When
the "+" was clicked int the left pane nothing happened and the hourglass
cursor appaered but never went away.
2.) In IE 6.029 with SP2 web sites could be accessed by selecting from the
list of favorites however, when typing the address in the address bar nothing
happened.
Another rather curious symptom was that on the computer I use at home with 5
users defined - 1 user did not see the above problems, all others did. When I
unistalled one update (KB908531) the problem went away. The other updates
installed at this same time were:
KB890830, KB911567, KB912812, KB911565, KB914454, KB911562
I installed the updates one at a time once I found the problem so I know
that KB908531 is the problem item.
Since I bought Windows thru Dell with my computer I haven't found an easy
way to report this to Microsoft for possible solution (without paying that
is). Has anyone seen/heard or have any understanding of this problem.

Presario 5310us system with 40 Gif HD and 256 RAM, I have XP Home Edition
and over a month ago updated to SP2 with no problems.
About a week ago ( I can't remember what I was doing when it happened) my
speakers made weird screaming , popping and squelching sounds. I muted the
speakers. I don't know when the sound went out. My husband swears he heard
game sounds when I was playing Red Faction a few days ago. I went to play
today and no sound. I haven't really noticed the sound being gone until
today ( I tune the system sounds out I guess).
I have checked Devices, drivers, and everything says enabled and working. I
disconnected the speakers and tested them with other audio equipment and
they work fine. I don't know where else to look. Nothing has changed, there
are no new programs, I run virus checks and spyware checks every few days. I
don't know why the sound has just stopped working.
Any suggestions?
( I did delete Yahoo downloaded chat software last week, it's the only thing
I can think of even remotely connected to sound changes)
