- Windows XP Support >> USB ports do not work.Hi! I built my own edit computer based on Matrox specs using one of their
hardware edit boards. Everything on the computer works flawless except one
thing. None of my USB ports are working. In device manager all usb drivers
say okay. There are no question marks, red or yellow warnings. I have gone
through the Windows help file. At this point no devices that I try(digital
camera, ipod) show up in device manager. I have:
1. Uninstalled all drivers and reinstalled multiple times.
2. Checked usb cabling and devices(all devices work fine on other computer)
3. I even bought a PCI USB card. This then saw the devices but they still
would not work, so I thought I would try again fromn scratch.
4. I also checked to see if I had all motherborad software loaded properly.
I did.
5. I also tried updating the usb drivers. This did not help either.
I did find a note in the motherboard manual on usb wake-up. Might this be
an issue?
Does anyone have any ideas. Somehow I feel like I have missed something
simple.

Windows XP Hardware >> Keyboard goes crazy
Hi,
I have a compaq laptop with Win XP Home (distribution
ver). Once in a while my keyboard goes crazy and starts
typing in numerics & special characters when I press
alphabets. Some time nothing is displayed while I am
typing. I ususally try different options like toggling
capslock and pressing function keys but nothing works.
I have to restart the computer to fix this. Sometime even
after restart when I have to type my password nothing
displays and if have to restart the computer again. My
Win XP is fully updated...I am not sure where the bug is.
Any clue guys...?
Thanks
Imran

- Windows XP Setup >> Read only shared filesWe have 2 home PCs running XP Home edition and linked by wireless broadband.
Each 'my documents' folder is shared with the other. If I try to open a file
on computer B (for want of a phrase) that is held on the hard drive of
computer A (or vice versa), it will only open as 'read only'. Please can
someone tell me how I change this so I can access files and update them from
the other computer? I've checked that the file isn't saved as 'read only' on
the source PC. I understand from another newsgroup that this is probably a
security permission set by the operating system. Thanks, Sue.

- Windows XP Network >> seeing other computers on the networkI have a problem that I hope someone can help me with. I am running an XP
system with service pack 2 and all the updates that I can get from the
microsoft update center.
My problem is before I got a trojan that was named xwinupdaterarx.exe I
could see and connect to other systems on my network. Now I can not connect
or even see other systems but I can stil get on the internet. I was
wondering if that trojan modified something that could have caused my problem
or what. I know when I first got the trojan it went into the registry and
disabled the ability for windows updates to work.
I have ran multiple tools to kill the trojan and my virus scan has killed it
but I still have the problem of not finding any systems.
Any help given here would be greatly appreciated and thank you.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Using two mouse: one for lefties, one for rightiesI had no problem getting two mouse (mice) to work together on our PC. I'm trying to find out how I can switch the primary and secondary buttons for just one mouse. It will be used by a left-handed person, while the other mouse will be for the right-handed members of the family. Any idea how to apply this setting for a single mouse instead of all connected mouse
Note: our Windows XP has a single user profile, and I do not wish to set up individual profiles for each family member and make them log in and out just for mouse configuration.
Thanks, Ma

The run32.dll could be corrupt.
Replace the file run32.dll in the folder c:\windows\system32 with a fresh

from http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?run32
It worked for me.

- Windows XP >> XP Pro(orig) prob HELP! - Sys folders names change after reboots...System:
XP Pro(orig)
AMDxp2100
1gig RAM
When I reboot, sometimes the folder names for (start)>My Computer and
Network(or Neighborhood) are changed to something different.
They appear to be reg key names/data information.
For instance, right now, "My Computer" says "DirectMusicBand"?!?
Another name that has popped up is "MDhcpClass" but they seem to change
with no apparent pattern - I can rename them and they're fine until a
random number of boots.
Also, when I looked at the registry for these keys, I noticed there are
a vast number of entries that are identical except for the number "1" at
the end.
IE: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{79BA9E00-B6EE-11D1-86BE-
00C04FBF8FEF}\ProgID (Default=Microsoft.DirectMusicBand.1)
There is another entry like this but WITHOUT the ".1"
I'm wondering if these are "duplicate" keys and can they be removed
safely?
I've done an XP over-itself repair but no change.
Very strange prob, eh?
(the Recycle bin icon changes too - I've tried most fixes for this but
no joy)
Anybody heard of this sort of thing before? Driving me nuts.....

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> System Restore will not complete a Restore.A few days ago, System Restore stopped working. It runs
through most of the steps and then reports that it cannot
complete.
I have run the System Restore diagnosis tool and found
the following in the files:
In the SR-Rstrlog.txt file, for RP 185, which was my
Restore attempt:
1524,1490,445999, Delete, Not Found, 0,

1525,1491,445998, Create, Optimized, 0,

Rename, Fail, 1168, C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0
\Reader\AXEParser.dll, C:\Config.Msi\82c8fd.rbf,
1532, , , START UNDO
The AXEPArser.dll file exists, but I guess there is a
problem with the previous command Attrib on file
82c8fd.rbf
In the SR-ChgLog.LOG file, there are entries for:
82c8fc.rbf - create, delete, rename, attribute change
82c8fd.rbf - create, delete, rename, attribute change
82c8fe.rbf - create, delete, create
82c8ff.rbf - create, delete, create
Can anyone advise me what the problem is, and is there
any way I can fix it so that System Restore works again?
I am using Norton System Works and the Norton Protected
Recycle Bin. I recall an error message when I was
deleting some files from the Recycle Bin, and wonder if
this is related. I cannot recall the exact details of the
message, sorry.

- Windows XP Network >> dhcpNodeTypeI inherited a used Toshiba notebook running XP SP2. After endless
fiddling, I still could not get it to show up in my local, home
workgroup comprising four other XP systems (two XP home, two XP Pro). It
was "visible" in My Network Places, but trying to open it always
reported that the network path was unavailble and questioned whether
permissions were set correctly. I finally tracked the problem down after
much newsgroup searching. One of the NetBT parameters in the registry,
dhcpNodeType, was set to "peer to peer," which from what I read means
the machine had been configured for a WINS domain server environment.
(This makes sense; it had been used in a local university network.)
Changing the registry value to 8, "hybrid" solved the problem. (I
checked the other four machines at home and they all reported "hybrid"
for that parameter.) The questiion is: why didn't re-configuring all the
networking settings change this value? I didn't enable WINS name
resolution.

- Windows XP >> Browse Large Folder Like VistaHi! I have a large folder with over 1,000 folder inside and I would
like to know if there is a way to browse a large folder like you do in
Vista. For example in Vista if I'm browsing a large folder and I hit
back the selection remains on the same folder it was, if I was
browsing the folder 500 of a list of 1,000 and I it back the screen
returns to the same selection. This behavior does not happen in
Windows XP, if I hit back the screen returns to the very first folder
on the list.
Any guess?
Thanks!
