this a potential sign of a certain piece of hardware going bad? Could it be
something with Windows XP?

- Windows XP >> standby problemsI am running a Pentium 2.4 with Windows XP home and whenever I am away
from my computer I put the computer on standby as I've had three power
supplies catch fire and ruin computers. Yesterday I get the message
"the device driver for the 'communications port (COM1)' device is
preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all
applications and try again. If the problem persists you may need to
update his driver."
there does not appear to be any device operating on communications
port 1. The drivers are something like: "serenum.sys" and
"serial.sys"
when I remove these drivers I then get the same message regarding the
modem. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the modem but it makes no
difference.
Please help.
Thanks,

- Windows XP Update >> Windows XP unstable after SP2I am having problems with my system after XP SP2 update. Now my system will
sporadically lock up hard with no option but hit the reset button. There does
not seem to be any one factor to cause this. I can be in any program at any
time or it could just lock in the Windows XP start up window. Sometimes the
system will run an hour, sometimes is crashes the first minute. Now I canâ??t
even perform a system restore as I get an error that states unable to
complete operation, this is for any point in time that I try to restore to. I
am running an Asus board with the latest BIOS as this was already suggested
as a problem. Please help, as I donâ??t know what to do next.

- Windows XP >> Standard mouse won't right-clickHi all,
A friend of mine is having trouble with her standard mouse (PS/2 connection)
on a Windows XP machine. She is using the standard mouse driver since the
mouse is a "no name" bought at Office Depot. The problem she is having is
that the right-hand button doesn't do anything. She's gone into the control
panel and changed its settings, but nothing works. She got a mouse from a
friend and it has the same problem on her machine (although it's fine on her
friend's computer). The person who owned the computer before my friend used
a trackball "mouse", so did something get messed up in the registry? Any
ideas?
We haven't tried reinstalling the operating system yet because that takes a
long time.
Thanks,
Bob

- customize >> organizing folders alphabeticallyHow can I get the files and folders windows to ALWAYS
alphabetize by name without going to Details option?
Only in the first level of Windows Explorer do the files
order as such. One or more levels down and they seem
chaotic with the last file used in the last place.
I can find no way to set a default file order preference.
Thank you

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Limited UserI have Microsoft Office 2000 Pro installed on a Windows
XP Pro machine. It is a custom install with everything
loaded to the local drive. The user has a limited
account. When she tries to open a JPEG image attached to
an email using Outlook, she gets an open file error.
Outlook is not able to open this file type. If she copies
the file to her desktop she is able to open the image. If
I change the user account to Administrator she has no
problems opening this file in Outlook with Microsoft
Photo Editor. Is there a way to get around this Photo
Editor problem using a Limited account? I'd be
interested in other work arounds using a Limited account
too.

and what do I do? My ctrl-alt-del does nothing right now.

To make a long story short it can tell the IP address that you're making the
request from (the numerical address of your computer on the internet) and
looks that address up in a database. Certain countries are assigned certain
IP address blocks (range of numbers that are in use in that specific
country) and it just looks it up, figures out that those numbers are
associated with your country, and feeds you ads based on the country that
you're from. It's pretty simple really but not always effective as some IP
blocks are sold, transfered, or used for proxies. When, for instance, I use
compression software to speed up my browsing it appears that I'm coming from
an IP associated with the UK and Google automatically sends me to
google.co.uk instead of .com... It's a rather standard script and not very
difficult to implement but it's not always correct. There's software that
will use the same databases and allow you to look-up an IP address and
figure out where they are on the globe.

In Internet Options - click Languages and there is a list of locations
- eg United States - Sweden. When you go to somewhere with localisation
by country, it picks up whatever is at the top there

- Windows XP Security >> XP Home, userpasswords2 and Power Users - deadly combinationI posted this question on the end of an old thread - didn't check the date first. As it's not going to get seen there, I'm going to repost, please forgive the double-post.
I'm used to XP Pro but am currently on a 'loaner' computer while mine is in the shop. I didn't realize there was a limitation in XPHome with Power users. I renamed and changed my account to a power user in Userpasswords2, which Home doesn't support. What this means is I can ctrl+alt+del twice and type in the username and password, but my account is no longer shown on the Welcome screen, or in any userpasswords control applet. Any ideas how to set this account back to administrator?
Thanks.

- Windows XP Security >> Windows Defender error 0x80004003 Invalid pointerI started having this error quite suddenly. If my Windows Defender shows me a

When I click on this button, I get the error "Invalid pointer".
Does someone know what this means and how I can get rid of it? Thanks in

- Windows XP Support >> complicated multiple file rename problemHi.
I have thousands of files with a name format like:
name-key1-key2.ext
I use the dos ren command like this:
ren *-key2.ext *-newkey2.ext and it works a treat.
Thing is, now I want to complete remove key2 from the filename
altogether and just be left with filenames like:
name-key1.ext.
I try doing stuff like:
ren *-key2.ext *.ext
but it doesn't make any change at all.
My greatest frustration with this is that only 3 weeks ago I had the
same problem and managed to sort it out by fumbling around with many
different attempts at slightly different syntaxes. But it was really
late and I was exhausted and I was thinking I'd never need it again.
And now, here I am needing it again, and I can't remember and I didn't
document it.
Any help or answers will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

- Windows XP Support >> SP2 won't install..Hi there,
I've got a Dell machine here and tried to do the repair install with the
original CD Rom install disk and it completed and now it's back to SP1.
I went to install SP2 on it and it failed to complete it due to permissions
denied when backing up the registry. I took ownership under "administrator"
of all the keys in the registry and it still won't complete. Then I just
kept hitting "ignore" when informing me of the permissions denied in backing
up the registry and it went along a lot further, but when it came almost to
the end of install SP2 it all of a sudden came up with a permission denied
in installing the SP2.
So, I've failed miserably in fixing this one....
What should I do?
Thanks,
Gordon

- Windows XP Network >> Network Path Not foundI had a power outage the other night. My system came back up but now I am no
longer able to connect to any of my shares on any computer. I receive the
"Network Path not found" error.
From my other systems I can access the shares on the bad computer with no
problems.
Here is what I have done.
1. Made sure no firewall(s) were running.
2. Ping the other machines with no problem, name lookup also works
3. uninstalled the network card replaced it with another card.
4. changed the workgroup name and IP addresses of each computer
5. reinstalled sp2.
6. uninstalled both Microsoft client and file and printshare then
reinstalled.
I can do everything dealing with the network except access windows shares on
this computer. Any help would be great. I would like to fix this rather
than blow the system away and reinstall clean.
Thanks
