- Windows XP Support >> CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD-RW issuesWith WinXP SP2 and regular updates, I have difficulty consistently accessing
both optical drives. Both willplay audio disks with Win Media Player (v10),
but will not access anything from My Computer- several different things
happen, depending on what was in the drive(s) on boot: if there was a disk in
the drive on boot, I can see the disk listed in My Computer, but when opening
the disk, i get a blank window. If the drive is empty on boot, then when
accessing the drive (contents not indicated in My Computer, I get a Disk
unavailable error.
I have had Nero 5.5 installed- everything worked well. Then installed Nero 6
and Nero 6.5 problems. Uninstalled Nero in all versions, now have problems.
Have applied registry patches as suggested in several postings, short-term
(like 1 disk) change, then as before.
Assistance appreciated.

- Windows XP Setup >> Windows XP and RAID5 drivesI have been in the process of configuring a Compaq server,
running WinXP Pro, with RAID5 drive formatting. According
to both Microsoft AND Compaq this is not possible. I
submit for everyone's benefit this article:
http://www.techzonez.com/comments.php?id=2020&catid=1
This article has screenshots of the New Drive wizard
giving several RAID related options.
I have edited the listed files, but I still get nothing.
In fact, 50% of the times I tired the files were back to
their original state on reboot.
I believe this IS possible. If anyone has accomplished
this, or can see something here from a hex editing
perspective that I missed, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

I recently purchased a five button mouse and didn't install the software that came with it (i find this quite usless). Yet, my buttons act "programmed" when clicked, in IE for example (back and forward), Explorer (same thing) etc..
WHERE is this programmed? Registry? If so - what should I do to change the functions (i.e. to change this to esc & shift)
Thanks!

boot but when I hit the reset button it would go to full boot.
This has happened six or seven times.
Now it won't boot period and I get the "boot failure, insert system disk".
I insert the startup disk that I made a couple of years ago but when I use
the command such as FDISK /MBR or any other commands it won't excecute them.
Do I have to do a format and reinstall the system?
Appreciate any help.

Windows XP >> sound and video using same IRQ
I have Sisoft's Sandra and was looking through the IRQs in system
resources. Both Envy24 Family Services Controller (audio) and the
video card (nVidia GeFore 7600 GT) are using IRQ 16. Will this causes
problems? I've been having audio problems. Thx.

When do the sound problems happen.
Are you using onboard sound or an add-in card?
Sharing IRQs can cause problems, but often trying to assign specific IRQs
causes a lot more problems. I don't think it is a common problem with todays
comps. I think if a PCI card won't share and IRQ happily it isn't fully
compliant of the PCI 2.0 standards, but don't quote me on that ;-)
Some games specify hardware acceleration by default for the sound which can
cause problems.
If you can re-create the problem, you might running DXdiag, (from "run" on
the start menu or command prompt), and under the sound tab lowering hardware
acceleration there to see if it makes a difference.
BTW System Information under System Tools menu provides this hardware
information also.

I was getting no sound when playing DVDs (other audio worked fine),
but I think I solved it. I had recently reinstalled XP and needed to
reinstall the decoders. Now getting DVD audio in VLC (haven't tried
the other players yet). What still has me stumped is I can't install
new drivers for the sound card. Keep getting 'access denied.' Doing
some research it could be due to another device using the card, but
haven't done any further trouble-shooting yet.
Ran DXdiag with no errors.

I know. I'm a beta tester for SiSoft. :)

- Windows XP Network >> Sharing FavoritesI have to logon to my laptop using different accounts
depending on whether I'm at home or at work. I'd like to
preserve as many of my settings as I can, avoiding the
need to reconfigure different apps between the two
accounts.
One issue is my IE favorites. I know that I can copy
favorites from one account to the other, but I was
wondering if there was a way of keeping them sync'd so
that they were always the same. Or better yet, just one
set that is used for any number of user accounts.
Is this possible?
Thanks,

- Windows XP Network >> Browsing problem with XP Home NetworkHere is my situtation. I have 2 computers with XP home,

system that I am on and not the other computer. I did
disable the Firewalls too. Still no luck.
Any advice?

- customize >> Separator LinesIn my first Post, I wrote the following:
I use both WIN XP Home and Pro, and I have around 240
programs, not including all the associated links and
programs that go with those programs. I notice in
the "Start" and "Start/All Programs/" menus there are
separator lines (such as the small line directly above
the "All Programs") to help categorize your programs. I
would like to know how to add more lines, so I can
separate my "Start/All Programs" menu into different
categories, making it easier to find office, photo
editing, games, and other program groups.
I then Received a reply telling me how to create a new
Folder. (Why?) I also received:
Subject: Re: Start Menu Groups

You can't add separator lines. The one that appears
divides the "All Users"
programs list from the Programs list specific to the
current user.
I dont beleive this is true due to the fact that someone
put those lines there, therefore common logic tells me
that if they can add lines, so can I. All I wanted was to
partition my "Start/ All Programs" menu with lines. I
know how to add a folder and fill it with sub folders,
thats too easy, and not the fix I was looking for. Does
anybody have any ideas? I'm greatful for any assistance.

- Windows XP >> Windows XP login screen and Outlook 2003Hello,
I am having problem with the windows XP login screen. Up
until yesterday, the Windows Xp login screen would only
show me the number of unread email messages from my
hotmail acount. But now it's also showing me 1 unread
email from my personal email acount in Outlook 2003 even
though I do not have any unread emails in there. I
deleted the folder from the registry yet when I check for
and read all the new emails using Outlook 2003, it always
shows 1 unread email on the Windows XP login screen. Can
someone please help me with this situation?
Thank you.

- Windows XP >> No compressed folders in "Save In" listI was asked the question, "Why don't my compressed
folders show up in my 'Save In' list when I try to save a
newly created file."
My best guess at this was that compressed folders really
aren't folders, they are files. Therefore, they wouldn't
show up on the list since only drives and "real" folders
do.

- Windows XP >> Stat up Registry ProblemHi,
Can someone please help, this is really giving me a headache.
I have a problem with the programs that are listed in the run section in the
registry when the system starts up.
In the key
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" are about
three programs that run on start up. They used to start normally, but now
they have seemed to have stopped starting on the system starting up. If I go
to the locations of the files that are listed in the reg key and double
click on them, they run normally. They
used to run ok, but now they have stopped for some reason.
These programs are not viruses, well I don't think so anyway, they're
Nortons Antivirus, mobsync and Ad-Watch by Lavasoft.
Does anyone know why this has happened and how I can fix this problem?
Hope someone can help,
Thanks
Best regards
Scott

Windows Update Is Not Installed - WinXP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;811269
You are using a version of the AOL software earlier than AOL 8.0 Plus.
-and-
You use the AOL Web browser interface to access and download Windows
Updates.
The AOL Web browser that is included with versions of the AOL program that
are
earlier than AOL 8.0 Plus did not communicate correctly with the Windows
Installer software. As a result, Windows Installer may stop responding.
Windows Update Troubleshooter

Updates fail to install and you receive error message 0x80070643 - WinXP
Check the C:\WUtemp to see if the Update files exist as being downloaded.
What
happens is that a folder is created for the update and inside the folder is
the
actual installation file. Once the install is successful the WUtemp folder
will
be empty.
You can download the update from the Catalog and save to be installed
later.
