- Windows XP >> $NtUninstallKBxxxxxx$How can I safely remove Windows Update backup files? I find that all the
files in path C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKBxxxxxx$ add up to about 171MB. Can I
just simply delete these as I have no intention of backing off any of the
patches?
Thanks!

- Windows XP Support >> Can I make a backup copy of XP Pro SP2 CD?Just in case the original gets damaged, is it allowed to copy the CD?
I just tried Nero Express and got unrecoverable errors towards the end
(simulated burn).
It's a full retail version, so I guess should the original be damaged I can
ask MSFT for a replacement?

- Windows XP Network >> Disable/Enable "Local Area Connection" using DEVCONHi,
I was following up on a different thread and need to disable/enable a
network connection, specifically "Local Area Connection" using a command line
utility so that I can package it in a batch file. It turns out that DEVCON
may be of help. A thread from 7/05 talks about it, but it doesn't go deep
enough to outline the way to get to the connection. The help for devcon is
not helping enough to suggest a way to isolate the connection.
Can someone with DEVCON experience suggest a way to disable the connection?
Novell has a utility called NETSHX that can do it for their networks. This
will probably be a nice tip for some people! WINDOWSITPRO seems to have an
article that covers this topic but it's for subscribers only. :-|
Thanks.

- Windows XP Setup >> NIS 2003 on SP2 and Restore Points failI am building a new system. In installed Windows XP Pro + SP1a, then
installed SP2 and lots of other software.
Finally, I installed Norton Internet Security 2003 with AntiVirus 2003.
The installation process created a system restore point as usual. I
ran LiveUpdate iteratively after the installation to bring everything
up to date.
The next morning, I tried to create a restore point manually. The
process of creating the restore point hung part way through and could
not be cancelled or completed. I had to kill it from the task manager.
I also tried to install another product. That installation too hung
while creating a restore point. Installation could not be cancelled
and I had to kill it too with the task manager.
I then tried to uninstall NIS but the uninstall hung. Perhaps it too
wanted to do something with restore point support?
Finally, I disabled the System Restore feature, uninstalled NIS,
reenabled System Restore, and am now able to create restore points and
install products without any problem.
Has anyone experienced this or know how to resolve it?
Thanks.

- Windows XP >> Slave drive not initialized after xp reinstall. Contains data!I have two WD 40g drives. Both were working fine, but I needed to do a clean xp reinstall on drive c. Backed up Important files to slave, and reinstalled xp. Slave shows in bios and disk mangement: "Disk 1 unknown 37.27 gb not initialized. Unallocated. This slave was previously partioned in dos with the western digital data lifeguard tools as NTFS so I can't get to it in dos. Of course, I need the data on the drive. I have searched the net amd this forum without locating a solution this particular problem, other than an accurate mention on the WD site pointing me to Microsoft.
How can I initialize this drive or otherwise have it recognized by windows without loosing data?
Will using the initialize feature of disk mangement destroy the data?
What is the best way to retrieve this data?
Thank you

- Windows XP Network >> "Wireless Connection Unavailable" after Windows UpdatesOn a freshly installed Windows XP Pro system, I
installed, and had working, a Dell PCI Wireless Adapter
(802.11b) and it was working fine.
After doing "Windows Updates", It no longer connects to
this "unsecure" (no WEP etc.) network, and when I check
the box to allow me to connect anyway, it acts like it
will connect, but then simply goes back to "One or more
wireless connections available" without connecting to
it. As a temporary workaround, I've got a 100 foot Cat-5
cable strung around the edge of the house, but my room-
mates aren't happy with it.
Anyone know a resolution to this problem?

- Windows XP Support >> lsass.exe help (might be sasser virus)Hi, I am having problems with Lsass.exe and hereâ??s the description of the
problem.
The system is shutting down... the shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY
SYSTEM"
The system process c:\windows\system32\lsass.exe terminated unexpectedly
With status code -01073741819. The system will now shut down & restart."
I checked on the internet and everything points to it being some sort of the
sasser virus but hereâ??s the thing I donâ??t have any of the known programs
running in the task manger such as avserve.exe. I tried every single sasser
virus scanner and they fail to find anything. Also I check for agobot,
argobot, blaster, Welch, gaobot. And the anti-virus scanners canâ??t find
anything. I am running Windows Xp service pack 2 also I am behind the windows
firewall and I use AVG as my main antivirus scanner. I was wondering does
anybody else have any ideas before I smash this computer

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Personal seting keep resetting every startupI got a response to this last week but didn't have time to reply. I don't
have a virus. When I go to "run" and type in the pathway to the personal
settings it doesn't take me anywahere. It doesn't recognise it.
This problem is more of a nusisance than anything else. Whenever I boot up
the settings are fresh and default. Any changes I have made before pwering
down are lost. It asks me if I want a tour of XP! No I don't !
Any help would be most appreciated.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Your System has no paging file and more errosI reinstalled XP from my cd, to repair after having the

file..etc" when loading my personal settings. Then when
my desktop appears, after clicking ok, I get "Norton
Protection: Attention: access denied drive c" then I
get "c:\windows\system32\keyhost.htm not found".
I followed the steps in Knowledge base article #315270,
but it did not correct the paging file error. I don't
know what kind of Intel chipsets I have so I did not try
article # 316528.
Any advice on how to correct. In another newsgroup I saw
some advice to correct by uninstalling the Intel
application accelerator, but I am not sure about what
that is or how to do it.

Go to Control Panel, System, System Restore. Turn off System Restore, =
reboot and turn it back on. This will flush the restore points, and the =
infected file along with them.

- Windows XP Security >> Windows RestartsHi,
Firstly thank you for reading my problem, I greatly
appreciate your time.
I am having a hardware/os related problem. Whenever I
start to work with intense programes (Like Age Of
Mythology, Adobe Premiere, Adboe Photoshop .etc.,.) my
system becomes quite unstable and then just restarts. It
happens quite often, almost everytime I run a big
application or I give my PC something big to do (Like
sort my mp3 list into alphabetical order). It's almost as
if someone has pushed the restart button on me. Any
idea's?
Anthony.

- Windows XP Support >> Unreadable Text In Windows XP Home EditionThis problem is kind of hard to explain. I'll do my best to keep it short. I
ran cleanup on my system the other day and since then I haven't been able to
read the text on my computer. It's in some strange language that is very
unreadable. For example the Start Button looks something like this ( ? ^ v x
^ ) I don't know how I got into this mess or how to get out of it because
everthing is unreadable. The only time I can read the text is when I'm on web
pages. I went by memory and uninstalled the video card driver but that did
not work. I tried restore but while I was in the process of running clean up,
I deleated all but the most recent restore point. And the most recent restore
point comes up unsuccessful everytime I try. Thanks for reading this and I
hope somebody out there can help.

- Windows XP >> IE & multimedia linksCan someone please tell me how to change what program opens when a MM
(multimedia) link is clicked in Internet Explorer?
For example:
MP3 linked >> IE opens to another window (same session, not a separate
new session) and displays Windows Media Player slider controls ... but
I'd rather WinAMP player open!
MP4 link clicked >> IE opens to another window and nothing (apparently
IE has no association for MP4) but MP4's do play on the PC
WMV link clicked and WMP player is launched (hurray)!
I'd like to know how to make IE launch the stand-alone player of my
choice for MP3, MP4, RM (Real Player media), WMV etc.
Anybody?
Thanks
Vic
PS: if registry adjustments are required, no problem, do that quite a
bit and have redundant backups

- Windows XP >> Hard DriveOk, I have 2 questions....I have 2 hard drives, the 1st (primary) is a
Western Digital almost 10GB, and the second (just added 2 days ago) Western
digital 120GB. The thing is, and i undrstand there is overhead (not sure I
understand it, but I know it exists with all hard drives) but windows reads
the capacity of the smaller drive (from disk management or the drive's
property page) as 9.31GB while Western Digital's DLG utility reads it's
capacity as 9.77 GB..and Belarc Advisor read it as 9.99GB, the second drive
windows sees as a capacity of 111GB and WD's utility sees it as 117.22GB and
Belarc reads as 120.03GB....Can anyone help out with what's going on here?
2nd question, I thought I read somewhere that having 2 hard drives if one
were to place the page file on the 2nd drive, the one the system is not
installed on, that Windows' performance will improve or something like that.
Can anyone enlighten me on this?
TIA
Bill
