found" When I go to the directory where it is located, the directory is
empty, but why am I able to see the files and select them to restore??? yet
the backup file is not there?
Is there a way I can still get these files? Please help.

- Windows XP Security >> Creitical Updates page - RecentWhenever I see a change that is unexpected on the Critical Updates page, I
usually post a question and ask what I should do.
Tonight my husband tried to download Critical Updates and when he got to
that download page, he saw a lot of instructions about downloading new update
software about Windows Genuine Advantage Tool KB892130. He didn't bother to
post a question on this forum and decided to go ahead with the download.
However, after the downloads, the installationa bar got about 1/5 of the way
across and just stopped there for quite a long time. Nothing happened, so he
decided to click on Cancel. The box remained open just stating Cancelling and
nothing happened. He finally had to ctrl/alt/del to close it.
Now what do we do? Is our PC injured now? Please try to help and advise us
what to do. Thank you

installation, but when I boot up, it can take up to 5 mins
for all my startup pgms to startup and the Laptop locks up
frequently. Laptop (Compaq - Presario - 1700) 4-5 years
old. 1g mhz, 256 RAM, 40g hardrive.

- Windows XP Support >> Outlook will not openI have been using Outlook on this computer for quite a while. Recently I
received an message to report a problem (which I did). There is no
information given an Outlook then closes. I have connected to my .pst file
from another computer so I am convinced that it is not corrupted. I have
re-loaded Outlook on this computer twice thinking that it might be corrupted,
but it did not fix the problem. I now wonder if there is a Windows
corruption problem.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciatied

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Disk Cleanup ProblemI accidentally deleted things in More Options/Windows Components part of Disk
Cleanup. I lost my Wordpad and Games part of the Accessories & Utilities. I
also no longer have the volume control icon in my taskbar! I am not sure yet
what other things are missing. I can't find a list of what is supposed to be
there - after many hours of looking on websites. I can't do a system restore
because I also deleted all prior restore points! I am so mad at myself for
this ridiculous error as I always create a new restore point when doing
things on the computer! Is there anyway I can recover these lost components?
I have installed the Service Pack 2 so I don't think I can just put my
Windows XP Home CD in my puter and recover those programs or can I? I have
ordered the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD but that takes 4-6
weeks to arrive. Any help will be much appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> XP Home Edition freezes at start-upI have current updated XP home edition on my Toshiba laptop, successfully
running for 2 1/2 years. I use it at home, and at work I had the
administrator set it up to permit me to log into their network. Since then
the computer freezes at start-up on the blue screen that shows the Windows XP
logo, and the words "Windows is starting up". I found that I can navigate
through this at startup by tapping the F8 key rapidly before that screen
appears. I tried the System Restore to a date earlier than the
administrator's work, but no help. Is their a repair or restore procedure
that will cure this problem? Thanks.

Windows XP >> ink suffix on all icons
Those are .lnk and they are shortcuts, or links if you will to programs.
Shortcuts on the desktop with a small arrow in the corner of the icon are
.lnk files that point to programs that reside on other locations of the
drive.

- Windows XP Network >> Disable automatic dialing using Internet Connection SharingI have a computer with XP Home networked with another
computer with XP Pro. I am using a 56K modem for my
Internet connection. I have enabled Internet Connection
Sharing on the XP Pro computer. I am able to connect to
the Internet on the XP Home computer through the XP Pro
computer, however, everytime I log on to the XP Home
computer, if there isn't an Internect connection on the
XP Pro computer, one is automatically established. I
would like to disable this so that it only connects when
I open Internet Explorer. Is there a way to do this?
Thanks

- Windows XP >> URGENT: VERTUAL MEMORY PT2My Learned Friends,
Originally posted in the an inappropriate newsgroup.........
I am having a very bad problem with my PC. I am using Windows XP home ed.
When I am brought to the sign in screen during start-up I am told that the
page filing memory / virtual memory is low. It also gives instruction on how
to correct the issue, i.e. by going to control panel. The problem is, when I
try to increase the memory, it will not allow me to do so beyond the
parameters it already states. At the moment my PC is at a stand still. When I
fail to increase the virtual memory I am prompted that windows will do so
automatically. So I click yes. But, once I have done that the PC crashes and
must be restarted with am improper shut-down. I am out of ideas. I have tried
and failed to run a virus scan in and out of safe mode. I have tried system
restore but was told that the machine cannot be restored and that no changes
have been made. Also, when I ran the virus scan it stopped and stated that a
fatal error had occurred.
Also, I cannot connect to the internet and am told that my AOL software
needs to be reinstalled also, that my Norton software needs to be uninstalled
and reinstalled. This feels very serious. A virus may be responsible.
Basically, nothing is functioning in Windows unless through safe mode.
Maybe windows will have to be circumvented to solve the problem. Can it be
solved in DOS or thought Safe Mode with Command prompt?
Guys Iâ??m desperate. I am sending this message from another PC, which I will
have to come back to tomorrow to check your replies because I cannot check
them at homeâ?¦.Hope you can come up with something quick.
See you tomorrow
Yours,
Joe
PS. the message i am getting is "Your System Has No Paging File, or the
Paging File Is Too Small"

What was I doing to cause this? I started the machine up and noticed no
sound. Speakers weren't plugged into the back of the system so did that.
System froze, Tried CTRL-ALT-DEL really frozen. A few seconds goes by
system blue screens and restarts. The blue screen msgs are not in the Event
Viewer. Then the above as the description says. The boot drive C needs to
be checked for inconsistencies.
What does this mean, "The file name attributes in file 0x1597 has different
parents?"
I do have a Winlogon Warning. Here it is it occurs periodically.

- Windows XP >> Harddisk activity after login?Hi,
for several weeks I have the following problem with my XP installation:
After logging in (Client for MS networks, only member of a workgroup, no
profiles an a server) there is hard disk activity for 1.5 minutes with high
system load. The funny thing is, that this behaviour only occurs on the
first login after system start. If I logout and in again, XP only needs a
few seconds.
I already deactivated the virus scanner, the firewall, all non Microsoft
services and the index manager). But nothing changes the behaviour. Maybe
you have a clue where else I could look?
Thanks for your help,
Alexander

- Windows XP >> Showing files sizeHi everyone,
I use Windows XP Pro, and I have a question about counting the total size of
many files. When I select with the mouse a bunch of files in Explorer, the
total size of files is only shown if the total number of selected files is
inferior or equal to 100. Why ? I don't know why Microsoft chose to add
restrictions in Windows XP. I have the samer problem with the Explorer
search panel : it's much more complicated than in the previous versions of
Windows... and much less efficient (it requires many more clicks).
Thanks in advance,
Mark
