- Windows XP Hardware >> Dead Hard DriveHi, I have a hard drive that recently stopped working due to a fall
onto carpet from about 2 feet. It is an internal Seagate drive,
mounted in a Dynex (Best Buy brand) external case. I've been
researching what my options are to salvage my data, but I'm confused
on a few things.
First, I'm unsure whether or not my error is from the logic board
failing or from a mechanical failure within the drives/platters. The
drive starts up fine and begins spinning, but after a few seconds
stops, pauses, and starts again. There is NOT a clicking noise,
however. I've heard that this is the same as the drive clicking, but I
am unsure. I've read recently that people have had issues with logic
boards being broken/fried, so I was wondering if this could be the
problem. Perhaps buying a copy of the same drive would allow me to
replace the logic board with the new, functioning one, saving me a
considerable amount of money from asking a professional to extract my
data (something I can't afford). If it is not related to the platters,
it seems my chances of data are better.
How can I tell if it is a logic board error or a platter/mechanical
failure?
Also, if it IS mechanical, does anyone know any methods to get the
data? I don't need all of it so I don't need a terribly long uptime,
but there are some things on there I'd really like to have. The only
method I've seen that seems to work at all is to freeze the drive for
24 hours and hope the parts shrink and slide into place. However, I'd
like to do this as a last (or close to last) resort, as the
condensation can damage the drive permanently.
If anyone has any help, please let me know.

- Windows XP >> XP Registry Questionhave been having a problem where the Quick Launch setting does not stay
set beyond the current session. Have searched for a fix and tried numerous
suggestions on several NG's so far all to no avail.
Today I ran a search of the XP Registry using RegSeeker and under
HKEY_Local_Machine
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop. Default
Taskbar, it listed the "String too Long".
The Data entry for both the Default Taskbar and the (Personal) REG_BINARY
entry goes of the screen!
The Default Toolbars Data is just: 11 00 00 00 00 00 00 00.
Don't know if this has any bearing on my problem but I wonder what is the
normal/typical values for this Data?

- Windows XP >> Taskbar Buttons GoneHey there,
this morning when I started my computer I realized that my Taskbar Buttons
where gone. (*) I tried to get it back but I just can't find an option
anywhere that could return them.
Minimized items appear to be closed but in fact the are not since the are
still visible in the Task-Manager. The only way I can open minimized items
right now is with the Alt-Tab function or "Switch To" in the Task Manager.
I called Dell support and they told me to "Create a new User and transfer
the data", since the Taskbar is still available on the other users and the
guest account.
I hope anyone can help me.

- Windows XP Support >> Disappearing desktop iconsHi
When i boot up my laptop, the desktop icons take about 2 mins to appear.
I recently could not og onto my computer due to a faulty password. This was
solved with the help of others on this group.
I went to Safe mode, logged on and deleated the user password.
When I log on now, no password, the desktop icons do not appear for some
2-3 minutes.
I haven't found any help in teh tutorial section
Can anyone help please

- Windows XP Setup >> program NOT respondingWhat really gets to me is why I downloaded that update in
the first place. I had a serious error this last week, the
blue screen and everything. It seemed like all was lost.
Then it came back and immediately the MS error program
told me that I had a serious conflict and it needed to be
addressed. I then sent the report in as it requested, in
the past this has been very helpful. 24 hours later I
checked the statics of the error and they report Iomega
had a serious problem but a patch was available. I went to
Iomega and in fact there was the patch. I have updated or
checked for them in the past and this one never did come
up nor did it when I tried this time to see if it would
require it. Ok I downloaded and installed the patch to
prevent another crash of this nature. My Total Burn has
worked wonderfully since we went with XP last November. I
had EASY CD 5.0 when I had ME but knew that it would not
work with XP. I got the Total Burn for next to nothing and
it worked flawlessly. In fact I was not going to purchase
any other EASY CD 6.0 because Total Burn worked so well.
Now when the system crashed I was NOT using Iomega and do
very little. But after downloading the Iomega Patch to
avoid the crash my Total Burn LOCKED UP EVERY SINGLE TIME.
I lost 10 Cd's it would not certify. I am not a happy
camper believe me. So I went out and purchased EASY CD
6.0. It worked fine twice and now it too is locking up.
SWELL!! I am so discussed with Iomega and MS for making it
sound so bad and now it is. I uninstalled all my Iomega to
the point my CD Roms would not work and I had to reinstall
drivers. When I sit here and think how a week ago I could
make a CD and go to sleep until it finished and now I
don't know if it will get or not. RESTORE did not help,
nothing has, so my pain goes on, it just never certifies.

And the one-page set of instructions I found was written by
someone who speaks English as their second language, and the
instructions were unintelligible.
The instructions I got:

(before "first", or before "then" ?)

and then...
(does the "But first: come BEFORE "THEN" or between?)
Be sure, before you do ANYTHING, that you...."

Gb of it.
I'm not going to get my 300 Gb until I know how to access

servers. Most run the Microsoft updates just fine, but one PC was telling me
that I didn't have permission to install updates. This occured under either
local or domain admin accounts. I looked in "local security settings" and
determined that the only permissions to "manage auditing and security log"
were for a group called "domain\Exchange Enterprise Servers." I was not
allowed to add or change this setting. I worked around the problem by adding
the domain admins to the "exchange enterprise servers" group in my domain.
Now I can run the updates just fine on this PC. However, I'd really like to
get the administrators group to have "manage auditing and security log"
permissions. I'm worried that if I ever remove this computer from the
domain, no one will be able to install updates.
Any suggestions?

- Windows XP >> XP SP2 freezes when i right click on my desktopHi,
Can anyone advise why my notebook freezes when I right click on my
desktop. I see the egg timer and everything becomes inoperable. Only
way out is to switch off my laptop by holding the power button down for
a few seconds. When restarting my notebook always checks the hard disk.
Nothing new installed recently and I have MacAfee antivirus&firewall
installed.
Any advice would be appreciated

I would like to import a power point presentation into
moviemaker. When I attempt to import an error message
that the file cannot be imported or is corrupted pops up.
I tried playing the ppt in media player (per Microsoft
support) but it didn't work there either. I have been
told that this can be done. Any help is greatly
appreciated.

Shelly,
You can also save your Power Point slides as jpgs and import those into
Movie Maker.
In Power Point go to Files->Save As. On the Save dialog, change the file
type to: "JPEG File Interchange Format (jpg)"

- Windows XP Security >> Forcing Windows XP date and timeI have a need to force the Windows XP date to remain
constant on a database server computer.
The reason is that we use the server for demonstrations
for clients. The database information reflects a current
time period and we would like date on the machine to
remain constant, so when the demo (Client) applicaiton
accesses the data on the Server it will appear to be at a
time in the past that would make the data seem more
current.
That said.
I developed an application that would force the date of
the server machine to reset itself to the date we wanted
(lets say 2/1/2003) every 30 seconds. Also when it sets
the date is also sets the time to whatever the current
time is on the machine. We are taking a different
approach to this in order to hopefully resolve our
problem, by just setting the date once a day when we know
we are doing a demo. So the 30 second thing won't happen
anymore.
Our demo (Client) application started locking up about 1
hour and 20 minutes into the demonstration. We have not
been able to figure out why. However we are starting to
thing it was because our constantly resetting the date on
the machine every 30 seconds.
Does Windows XP do anything regularly in the background
that would conflict with this?
Also does Windows XP do anything that is date dependant
that would cause conflict with resetting the date on the
machine to a date in the past?

Kind of new to Windows XP so please bear with me...
I have not installed SP2 yet and it had been advised that I install
ZoneAlarm Pro
I bought ZoneAlarm Pro 4 a little less than a week ago, installed it, was
hit with a virus (which Avast! claimed to have caught- four files were
affected but now I am having the following problems...) updated the ZoneAlarm
software through their website and things started acting wierd.
I could surf ok but when checking my email (not using Outlook) those
websites were SUPER sluggish. In fact it took over 90 seconds to download a
page in some cases. I am using dialup but it has NEVER taken that long
before and refreshing does nothing.
A user on the ZoneAlarm forum suggested disabling ZoneAlarm, Rebooting in
safe mode and then deleting all the files from the internet log file
(C:\Windows\Internet logs). I did this, rebooted and now I just get my
wallpaper at startup and no taskbar or icons.
It is a rather lovely wallpaper and all but access to my computer would be
nice.
I can ctrl+alt+del and get into the task manager and was able to copy some
of my critical stuff to a disk fortunately but I have no idea what to do at
this point short of reloading windows XP.
I did create a restore point BEFORE I installed ZoneAlarm Pro. Can I get
back to it somehow?
Also, when I boot from the Windows XP cd-rom It has a repair selection but
it takes me straight to dos. typing dir gives me a directory of 5 columns:
date time a------ bytes used fn.ft
xxx xxx a-d---- 1200 fn.bat
(the second row is kind of an example)
I know that third column is telling me something but I don't know the third
columns language. There is a string of 8 characters and each position has a
specific letter assigned to it and I assume it refers to the file it is
associated with. Might it be telling me if one is damaged or not?
Anyway, any help would be much appreciated,

server. I have tried to do a system restore and delete SP2 installation,

- Windows XP Network >> WinXp NetworkingHi, I have a problem maintaining connectivity with 1 of 2 networks
configured on 1 PC.
The network with no issues is local. My pc is plugged to a hub that is
plugged into a switch on the local LAN.
I configured a second static IP address on the same PC and a second
gateway. But at some point I lose the ability to access this network.
The only way to resolve this is to delete the second static IP and
Gateway, then recreate them. When I do this I am once again able to
access resources on the second network.
I am Running WinXp Pro, attached to a hub that is attached to two
separate switches. 1 on the local LAN the other switch is attached to a
router on our WAN.
1 Nic Card.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

the Desktop1 and another desktop (Desktop2) which runs windows xp home.
I can ping Desktop1 from the Laptop.
I cannot ping the Laptop from the Desktop (neither 1 not 2).
I have been through this checklist

I don't know what else to check.
I have no firewalls enabled on this network.
I have simple file sharing enabled on all.
File and printer sharing is installed on all.

- Windows XP Network >> Client Computer not in My Network Places, lost printer sharingI have Windows XP, SP2 on my host computer which connected to the
internet via cable modem, and my other computer (client) running
Window 98 SE is connected to the internet via wireless router. When I
set up my network, initially with network wizard, everything was fine.
Recently, the client could not file share or print via the host. I
tried running the wizard again but near the end of the set-up an error
was encounter and it could not finish. I checked everything manually
and tried to look for solutions by going to Microsoft;'s web site,
jsifaq website, etc, but could not solve the problem.
Here's what I have so far. The computers can ping each other, and the
client computer, although not seen in My Network Places, is there when
I search for it within the folder. I cannot create a shortcut here,
however. I can connect to the client by Start/run/"\\computer name"
or Start/run/"\\internet address" and can still do file sharing. From
the client computer, I cannot identify the host computer with
Start/run/"\\host computer name" but I can with Start/run/"\\internet
address". The printer appears here but won't print. Also, I can use
Start/run/"\\computer name"\"Printer name" and the printer will show,
but not work.
As to why this problem occurred suddenly, I'll never know. Perhaps
some SP 2 update. But Windows firewall remains up with the file and
printing exception.
Any suggestions on how I can make the icon appear in My Network Places
and make printing work from the client computer would be very much
appreciated.

I've developed a problem: every time I start up my system, the System32
folder is open on the desktop.
I've looked through the Microsoft troubleshooting database and found an
appropriate article (170086), but I find the instructions vague for my level
of expertise. I've looked through the two registry keys referenced in the
article (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run) and I could
find none that had quotation mark probably. I did find an entry that looked
suspicious:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Name: (DEFAULT)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: (value not set)
This was the very first entry at the top of the list.
Does this look like the culprit? If so, can the whole entry be safely
deleted? If not, is there another fix for the problem?
