- Windows XP >> from windows 98 to windows xp professionalI am far from being an expert and that is why I want to play safe. I have
windows 98 in my desktop and want to migrate to windows xp professional. How
difficult or how easy is it? Am I too naive in believing that all I need to
do is put the CD and follow straight forward instructions? thank you

- Windows XP Update >> 80072EFE in logHi All,
We're looking to move from WUS to WSUS. Installed a new Server (Win2003)
front end and WIn2003 SQL 2000 SP3 backend running WSUS RC1. Installation
worked fine. We've directed some existing clients to the new server and they
are appearing however the status report for all remains "Not yet Reported".
All the logs contain error 80072efe (see below).
Any ideas on the problem or how to track it down?

- Windows XP Network >> linking two computersI am trying to get files from my old comp(win98) onto my new win xp pro machine using a Belkin file tranfer cable. The new computer does not seem to be connected or does not think it is. Could someone please help me with info to achieve this as I need the files from my old machine. As I am a novice please make it VERY simple if possible

- Windows XP Security >> Windows firewall won't stay onWindows firewall does not stay on. I have set the firewall to be on many
many times, but for some reason every so often I will get a Security
Center alert saying that the firewall is off. Also, it does not stay on
after a restart - I have to turn it on every time I restart Windows. This
does not happen at the office where my computer has XP professional. Is
there a setting to change to stop this from happening?

- Windows XP Hardware >> USB device probs, scanner seems to hang up systembeing new to XP I hope this is not a silly Q.
I connected my scanner and camera to my PC via USB and loaded drivers etc
and all worked fine. I then installed a 4 port USB PCI card and reconnected
these items, the hardware wizard ran and detected "new" hardware and then
loaded the drivers etc.
I have 2 problems.
1. the scanners is listed as "scanner #2" in hardware profiles and in
control panel, imaging devices. The same has occurred for the camera. Why
is this? I have tried uninstall/reinstall and it still lists as #2.
2. The scanner used to initialise immediately after I started up, now it
initialises a few minutes later and if I try opening control panel, or some
applications, they appear to hang until the scanner initialises. once this
occurs all works fine till next reboot.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Filter keysIf you hold down the right shift key for eight seconds
you go into Filter Keys mode. When I did that by mistake
my keyboard got messed up. Caps became lower case and
vice-versa and letters became symbols. I couldn't figure
out how to get out of this for a while but found that by
holding down the right shift key for eight seconds a
second time, everything returned to normal again.
Since then the Filter Keys mode comes up all by itself
every so often without my doing anything. But those times
the result is that the cursor stays in one place and I am
unable to type. Pressing right shift for eight seconds
gets me back to normal. How do I stop this mode from
coming on by itself?

- Windows XP >> Laptop shuts off and CPU Usage at 100%I have a Gateway 7422gx laptop. Recently, it started acting weird. The fan
would run faster than normal for 3-4 seconds and then the whole machine would
turn off. In addition, I noticed the CPU usage is at 100% even without any
apps running. Any ideas?

- Windows XP Support >> Fat 32 to NTFSI had to redo my Laptop.It originally came with files in Fat32.I run XP Pro.
first got it Changed all Partitions to NTFS.I did this without reformatting
the drive and loosing the info.I believe it was done threw command ??
I now have my backed up files on D drive which is NTFS,my C drive in Fat
32.I need to change my C drive to NTFS without reformatting.Can anyone
please help??

- Windows XP Update >> Laptop won't update (Error #0x80072EE2]I've got a Vaio laptop with Windows XP Home SP 1. I haven't been able
to get updates using the school's wireless network since last spring.
Someone on this newsgroup told me it was because I was "behind a
proxy." Whatever that means.
I've brought the laptop home and used the phone line and a dialup. It
still won't update. I get to the choice between Express/Custom. I
click Custom. Then I get a message that update has encountered a
problem and cannot display the updates. Error No. 0x80072EE2.
Note, that I have a desktop computer at home, using the same dialup
properties, also have Windows XP Home SP 1, and can update without
trouble.
What's going on here?

my machine has suddenly developed a variety of small
annoyances:
very slow start up
new tones for original sounds (very flat sounding)
new display was set and when taking it back to the
original resolution the font is still different
Unable to determine product ID
or able to schan for network conidition when using the
Help functions.
Have removed all spyware, defraged, preformed scan disk
and updated virus definitions and ran scan.
All clear!
Any ideas??? it just happened after I shut down Friday.

- Windows XP Support >> Mapped NT share randomly disconnects.I have a user with a Windows XP Pro (SP2+) laptop that is having a problem
keeping a shared folder on an NT4 server mapped. It randomly disconnects.
We can't seem to figure out a way to either get it to reconnect or
permanently stay connected. When he tries to access the mapped drive, he
either gets the message that the drive (Z:) is already in use or he gets a
prompt to enter in his user credential (and then a subsequent message
indicating that that user is already authenticated).
We're in a Server 2003 environment and the customer is authenticating to the
domain without any problem.
He is mapping the network drive with the "reconnect at logon" option set.
I'm at a loss as to what the problem could be. I've checked the firewall on
his system and I've tried removing his computer profile from AD. I haven't
tried deleting his user account yet. I'm not sure that that is the cause of
the problem.
If anyone has any suggestions on what else I should look at, I would
appreciate it.

- Windows XP >> Change or Remove ProgramsI can not open the program Change or Remove Programs in the Add or Delete
Programs section of the Control Panel. I get a message Please wait while the
list is being populated. I can leave this running overnight and never get a
single program listed. Just a white screen under the above message. The
other three programs work. (Add New Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components
and Set Program Access and Defaults. I am using Microsoft XP Professional
Version 2002 Service Pack 2. (76487-OEM-0011903-00102) My Anti Virus is
Grisoft AVG Version 7.5 Network Edition. It is updated periodically
throughout the day. I have been running this Anti Virus for several years.
Any suggestions.

- Windows XP Security >> Continuing blaster worm problemsI have downloaded the patch for the blaster worm,
installed all updates, renewed my anti-virus protection (
it states no viruses detected)and cannot locate the virus
on my Task Manager (processes tab). My computer works,
but after a while, it will make a highpitched noise as if
there are gears grinding in my laptop. The laptop will
then freeze for a minute or two, and sometimes never get
back to normal. What is going on? Is the virus still,
or could it be damage from the virus? If anyone can help
me, I would sincerely appreciate your time.

customize >> Help Needed to Change Language of WinXP
Hello. I have an Portuguese OEM copy of WinXP Home SP1
provided by Compaq for a Presario 2119EA laptop. WinXP
came pre-installed in Portuguese.
I have re-installed it selecting English (USA) language
options, but it still installed installed itself in
Portuguese.
Is there a system tool or a registry change that I can
perfom (or any other method) to change the OS langauge
setting?

make them in order to fix a problem. Now, the problem is
solved and I don't need the second installation
anymore....HOW DO I UNINSTALL IT? Without losing the
files in the other installation, of course, nor making a
mess with the registry?

- Windows XP Support >> Reversed browse list...?I'm having an issue with my browse list...
Like say I want to upload a mp3 file onto YouSendIt.com. When I click on
the browse button and search for whatever I'm looking for, the list isn't in
A-Z order...the list is backwards, Z-A order. Even if I right-click and
arrange it back to normal order, it always come back the same way after I
close it. I already tried restoring all my folder options back to default
and restored program things back to default, but it still didn't do anything.
I mainly use FireFox as my default browser, but the same thing happens in
Internet Explorer. I'm not sure if I did a certain keyboard combination or
not, but it's really annoying to keep seeing the list in reversed order. Is
there any way this could be fixed? Thank you in advance!

gift along w/ the ScanSoft PaperPort Deluxe 7 For Windows

- Windows XP Support >> SP2 install copy errors.I am attempting to install SP2 on a XP Pro machine. When I try I get the
following errors.
First, I get a â??Setup cannot copy the file type .wavâ?? error. When I click
on cancel it says it will continue with the setup without coping this file.
I get this error for the next 6 or more files then it continues with the
process.
After sometime I get another Copy Error dialog box. This one says â??An error
occurred while copying file xpmsgr.chm. Cannot copy file to destination
directory.â?? This time when I click on cancel it states that the SP2 install
will cancel and does. During the closing of the process I get another window
stating â??the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.â??
I have tried the following, none which worked.
I ran SFC /scannow. Problem still occurs.
I tried to install in safe mode. No luck.
I disabled Anti-virus programs. Still no luck.
I tried to do the update via Microsoftâ??s website and directly from a SP2 CD.
Same error for both procedures.
I need to get this computer up to date, but canâ??t get past this error.
Any advice or ideas are appreciated.

- Windows XP >> Installation HistoryI have my computer set to download updates automatically,
but I used the Web to download a recent "critical pack" &
when I checked my installation history it showed that
under 'STATUS' nearly every update automatically
downloaded had FAILED, but the one one I downloaded from
the web said SUCCESSFUL. Does this mean that all my
automatic updates are failing to download onto my
computer? If that's the case, why am I using automatic
updates at all? I thought I was keeping my computer up
to date with these automatic downloads.

- Windows XP Setup >> Right Click DesktopHello,
After installing 4/06 updates from MS, when I right-click my desktop, my
computer just pauses for 30 seconds - eventually the dialog box shows up.
It never did it before and none of my other computers without the update do
it. It is very annoying and time consuming. Any patches or fixes short of
uninstalling the updates (they won't show up in Add/Remove programs anyway.)

- Windows XP >> Help With Booting XPSome time ago I was asking for help on a mobo upgrade to my PC .. I went from
Intel to AMD and a upgrade to my original disk was suppose to take care of
the HAL files etc. but it never worked. So I installed 2 SATA disks and
preformed a clean install but I left the old IDE disk in to pull data off it.
The problem I have now is .. the IDE disk is C: CDrom is D: and the SATA's
are E: & F: . The system will not boot if I disable the IDE disk ... it tells
me no boot files present or something like that ..... I tried booting off the
cdrom and used the commands to fix the boot sector and install the boot image
...
Any ideas??? also what about the disk labels does it matter if they stay E:
and F: ?? It would probably screw up all the paths in the environment and
probably the Registry correct ??? Can this be fixed ???

Datatraveler (DTI/2GB) flash drive into my HP Compaq nc6400 with an Intel
(Centrino) Core Duo 2.00GHZ. I'm running Windows XP SP2. After I insert the
drive, I can access it for a few minutes but after a few minutes my computer
crashes. This is very easy to recreate and it happens all the time.
When my PC recovers, I creates a minidump. I have several minidumps that

Access Connection Manager, Remote Access Auto Connection
Manager, and the Internet Connection Manager will not
Start. I receive "Error 5: Access is denied" when trying
to start the RACM and "Error 1068: The dependancy group
failed to start" on the RAACM and the ICF.
