- Windows XP Network >> "Internet connection" under network connections?I recently noticed on 2 of my XP machines I have a second network connection
called "internet connection". It is running at 8 MBps. I still have my LAN
connection (100MBps). The properties for these connections seem to point to
each other, like a gateway. If I disable it I lose connectivity to the net.
I am running SP1 on both machines. What exactly is this? I don't have it
on any other XP machines and they run fine.

- Windows XP >> Drive order...Just installed XP Home ed. SP2 in a newly assembled system box and Windows
ended up on drive H:\
Part of the reason was I fitted a camera card reader, connected to a USB pin
header on the motherboard that seems to have been allocated drives c d e f
but, the cd r/w drive has ended up as drive g:\
...and as I said Windows is on H:\ [ 40gb hd ...all as drive H:\ ]
I know I can unplug the card reader, reinstall and connect it afterwards
but, how did the cd r/w drive end up as G:\ ?
...or could Windows be left on drive H:\ ...or is it preferable to have
Windows on C:\ , that's the way I've always worked.

- customize >> Customizing mouse wheel scrollingI just upgraded to windows XP and noticed that the mouse
scroll wheel doesn't function the same as in Windows 2000.
The basic problem:
In windows 2000, if you have multiple window frames open
and you point in one of them frames, then scroll with the
wheel, the pages scroll. If you move to another frame and
scroll with the wheel, the pages scrolls.
In windows XP, when I move between frames with the pointer
and scroll - it scrolls in the old frame, not the new one.
I need to click within the new frame in order for it to
scroll in the new frame. I find this irritating and would
like to know if I can customize it to the windows 2000
method of point and scroll.
Thanks in advance,
David

- Windows XP Support >> Random application crashes & system restartsI have recently re-installed Windows XP Pro SP2 on my freshly low level
formatted hard drive. I applied all the available patches using Windows
Update.
The problems I encouter are very strange:
* random application crashes (usually Internet Explorer)
* the computer restarts without any reason (i.e. while idle)
I have no clue what this could be. The only "out of ordinary" thing I
noticed is that the hard drive transfer rate is very low: HDD Maxtor
DiamondMax 10 (16MB cache) can hardly reach 35MB/s maximum transfer rate. It
is sitting alone on its channel and the MB supports UDMA133.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
VM

- Windows XP Setup >> Strange installationI recently installed a new motherboard, Intel D865 PERL with a CPU 2.8. I
then installed Windows XP Home. The installation went well and everything
works fine. However, when I restart the computer it failed to boot and I
got the following message on a black screen, "Non-System Disk or Disk Error"
"Replace and press any key when ready."
I have installed many motherboards and WinXP OS's but I have never seen this
problem or error. Since I had no system disk I placed the Windows XP Home
installation disk in the CD and the system rebooted and runs fine. However,
it will not boot without the installation disk in the CD drive. I tried
several combinations of boot sequence from the motherboard setup but the
only one that works is 1-CD 2-Floppy 3-HD, (in that order).
Any suggestions are appreciated.

- Windows XP Network >> Adding an XP Home Edition PC to a WIn 2003 Small Business Server DHi:
Should there be any problem in adding a Win XP Home Edition to a Win 2003 Small Business Server. When i try to do such all I get is the opportunity to add the machine to a workgroup, no domain option.
The user was previously added to the AD, the machine I believe has been added to the wins server (will need to verify this). Am I missing something or is there a limitation in the OS.
Many thanks in advance

- Windows XP >> configuring a laptop to be a member of/logon to 2 domainsHi...
Does anyone know a way of making a laptop be a member of two domains at the
same time so the user can choose what domain he/she wants to login to at the
windows login prompt... We have two offices with different domains... and
some users work at both. The domains are untrusted as one of the
networks is looked after by a sbs2000 server...

- Windows XP Setup >> Cannot get SP1 on.Hello all.
I am haveing a big problem with XP Pro. I am trying to install the OS on a
computer for my sister and absolutly CANNOT get SP1 on the machine. Everytime
I try to load the OS I get SOME error. This last time during setup it stopped
and told me it could not find three different files. Two of the three went on
(I think) when I hit the retry. The third and final file pro_seg.swf would
not go on no matter what I tried. Now I finally got the system up with a VERY
basic load of XP. Only problem is now when I try to update the system with
the Security Update CD I got from Microsoft, I keep getting errors. I know
the CD is ok, I have used it on other systems with no trouble. The first time
on this load I tried to install SP1 I recieved a Fatal Error and it shut down
the install. The next time I tried i now have a "Failed to install catalog
files" error.
OK.. Now what?? I am at a loss.. I have been fighting this machine for
more than a week now.. I have tried different XP Pro CDs and no luck with
those.. And for those who will tell me to use a legit copy .. I already
am...
Any Idea?? Thank you all in advance for your help and advice.

- Windows XP Support >> WMI keeps getting corruptI have about 10 XP computers, some new right out of the box, and the WMI
keeps getting corrupt on everyone of them. Most of these are for public use
and locked down with security, so its just daily use of internet explorer,
office applications, and printing that is being done. There has to be
something making the WMI corrupt on so many computers. I have a script to
run that usually repairs everything and gets the WMI back up. But a few days
later it is corrupt again. Not only do I need the WMI for using the
firewall, but I also use some other networking utilities that require WMI .
This is getting very frustrating. I've even done a complete reformat and
install, and eventually the WMI gets corrupt. They all have antivirus
software and no virus found.
So has anyone else out there experienced this? Does anyone have any idea on
what could be causing so many computers to loose the WMI?
thanks

- Windows XP Security >> Is AV software necessary? For some time I've been questioning the use of AV software. I work in IT
support and I really couldn't count the number of perfectly good Windows
installations I've seen borked by Norton AV or any of the other bloated
virus suites. The performance hit from installing these things with
always-on protection is lamentable, both in terms of boot up time and the
general responsiveness of the OS, and for what?
Thesedays, viruses spread faster than the AV companies could hope to
spread updated virus definitions. So for a critical length of time, AV
software is completely powerless to protect your system when any
particular worm or virus is at its peak on the Internet.
AV has disappeared from my home machines and - guess what? - no viruses.
This is because
(1) I login to the systems as a limited user, not the administrator
(2) I don't open email attachments
(3) I don't download, install or run software from disreputable websites
(4) I don't use IE or OE - these programs are virus distribution clients
(5) I use an ADSL firewall router and not an ADSL modem
My opinion is that AV software fixes nothing that common sense couldn't
fix. Common sense has the additional advantage that it doesn't turn my
512MB P4 system into a 64MB P2 with an endlessly grinding hard disk.
Nevertheless, at work, I still have to deal with the endless problems
caused by AV software. I still have to knowingly cripple nice, clean
installations by installing Norton bloatware. I still have to mess around
ensuring that the AV definitions are up-to-date, even though essentially
they will always be out of date when it really matters.
Is AV software necessary? IMO, no. It should be avoided like the plague.

- Windows XP Support >> SERIOUS prob w Taskbar and Icons missing.. ANYONEHi all...
This has become a little epidemic with WinXP and the problem with a missing
taskbar and desktop icons. Believe, I've dug DEEP to look for this one, and
it's bugging the CRAP outta me for a week now. Even worse, there are plenty
of people around the net having the exact same problem!
Kelly's 'cute' little fixes won't work, scrubbing the registry (tweaks,
fixes, cleaning), reinstalls, removing hardware, safe mode, removing all
non-critical services, reinstalling WinXP (Repair of course), upgrading IE,
etc.. etc... nothing works! I don't get it!
This is the issue: no taskbar, no icons. Explorer.exe won't run, IE won't
run. Ctrl-Atl-Del will allow access to EVERY OTHER PROGRAM which runs fine.
Perfectly fine. Even ones that depend on connections to networks and the
internet.
This IS driving me insane. I swear. I'm just short of a reinstall (or a
straightjacket), which I sooo don't wanna do. Even more desperate, I'm
willing to call and pay MS to help me through this. I've resolved EVERY
problem I've ever had with any ver. of Windows, cept this one. wow.. what a
beeyatch. Let's talk about it, maybe we can help each other:

- Windows XP Security >> Can't use Windows Update "Administrators Only" Prob.Hello, I have Windows XP pro and cannot access Windows
Update. When I try to access Windows Update on the net,
the site keeps giving me an "Administrators Only" page
saying that I have to be an administrator. I am the sole
user for this computer, so I should have administrator
priviledges. I am aware that it might have something to
do with my internet/network settings.
I have tried to follow the article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;316524
However, I experience problems in certain steps.
For Example:
- Step 11,12: I check the box for "Replace permission
entries on all child objects", but when I click "ok"
then "yes" on the confirmation window, it still stays
unchecked.
- Step 14.7: I use a DSL connection, so I tried the LAN
settings route. However, the proxy fields are blank, so
I get a warning "The proxy server you've chosen to use
are blank. This prevents access to the internet. Do you
want to turn off the proxy connection?" Choosing
either "yes" or "no" results in nothing happening.
- Step 16: I don't even know where this "command prompt"
they are describing is.
Thanks for reading this and any help you guys can give!

- Windows XP Setup >> Reinstalling Windows XPI have an "old" (2001) MDG desktop machine and am replacing it with a new
Dell desktop. I have transferred or reinstalled most of the programs etc
that I need. I want to keep the MDG but clear it out completely and
reinstalled two programs which I cannot run on the Dell because of certain
security features on the programme which require a 25 pin printer
connection. There is another programme which needs a 9 pin connect. The
Dell has neither of these connectors. I guess I could upgrade the Dell but
would like to keep the MDG and use it for a few more years.
I am a bit nervous about trying to reformat the MDG so would appreciate a
link or two which tells me how to do this.
Thanks

- Windows XP >> Finding a utility program to get rid of dupe filesThis is not really a windowsXP question, but perhaps someone can point me in
the right direction.
I have a bunch of back-up disks and files on my drives that I want organize
and eliminate all duplicates.
What I need for the first pass is a utility (DOS or windows) that will
search out all duplicate files (same name, size, date) on my hard drive so I
can eliminate dupes. It would also be great if it could find just same-name
files so I could selectively save only the latest versions. What's around
that might do that for me?
Thanks for suggestions.
