- Windows XP Hardware >> Incorporating C and D in new format partition?Howdy,
When I set up my computer with a large hd, I created a
few too many partitions.
Is it possible to format C: (primary partition) and D:
(logical drive) and incorporate both drives into one,
without having to reformat the entire hd? (I'd prefer to
not to have to reinstall all the files located on my
other partitions on the hd.
Am I stupid?
Please respond to my email address, as I am unable to
remember where the heck I posted this message : )

- Windows XP Network >> Networking not working - please help :)I am setting up a wireless network in our office - MAIN computer running XP,
2ND computer running XP Pro.
We cannot run the Network Setup Wizard on the M computer because there is no
floppy. Also - When it says "Select a connection method", the 2nd option
<This computer connects to the Internet through residential gateway or
through another computer on my network> is pre-selected, but is incorrect.
The MAIN computer is connected directly to the Internet via dsl line.
I did disable Windows Firewall, thinking that might be the problem.
We have identified the resources to be shared on both computers.
The 2nd computer CAN get files from the M computer, and is connected to the
internet. The M computer cannot get files from the 2nd compute r- it says
access is denied.
Please help!! We need this running smoothly today. Thanks SOO much in advance!

- Windows XP >> motherboardsJust curious of what people think of motherboards wiith 2 pci-xpress slots.
Is it a 'blip' on the upgrade treadmill or is it here to stay? Or perhaps
just somthing relegated to gamers that would live along side more mainstream

- Windows XP Hardware >> RRS9002-86XXF (IR remote paired to RXX6000-0141E)A customer that I am building an HTPC for insisted on 2 things:
Windows XP, because his brother says vista is garbage (ugh), and 4G of ram.
That forced my hand and made my only choice windows XP64.
That said I looked at TV cards that came with a remote and said they were
WinXP64 compatible. I ended up with the Hauppage HVR-1600-MCE card with the
subject line remote and IR receiver.
Here is the probelm: The card installs and appears to work fine as does the
software. The remote on the other hand appears to have no drivers. Since I
have never done it before converting the 32-bit INF into something 64-bit
would be quite a challenge, but I am willing to do it if it will work.
I am hoping that someone here somewhere knows if there is an MS driver for
this remote already in 64bit or can help me make the 32bit one into a 64bit
recognizable file so that it will load and see if it works.

- Windows XP Security >> winlogon.exeI use a piece of security software that flags
winlogon.exe during the login process of an XP client in
a Windows 2000 network. Winlogon.exe attempts to modify
several dll's and some other files during this process.
Is this something that is supposed to occur in Windows XP
and, if so, do you know what files it is supposed to be
modifying?
I would appreciate any help.

- Windows XP Network >> Cannot ping by name or browse by ipI am having the same problem on DSL and dialup line. IPCONFIG shows that the dhcp server has assigned an ip to me and the dns servers are assigned so during connection, I can access the net. Once connected, I can ping any server by ip but cannot ping by name which would normally indicate a dns problem. I have tried different dns servers. I have also tried to browse to http://216.104.... (the complete ip number) and cannot find the site by ip, which does not use dns so it not a dns problem??? Any ideas?

access from the network and, after some investiagation, I found out that the
assigned value of the policy of "access this computer from the network" was
blank in the "user right assignment". Then, I tried to add the appropriate

Windows XP Network >> Can't browse yo my other PCs after a network change
History: I hav a home network setup with 5 or so computers. All are running
XP Pro with one laptop running VIsta Home. I have them all setup on the same
Workgroup and have always been able to browse around to the folders I have
shared with no trouble.
Cause: Last weekend my main router died so I replaced it. THe new router
used a different IP set then my old one so now everything has a new IP
address. Everything else is the same.
Problem: One of the PCs cannot browse to any of the others and none of them
can browse to it. I can go to DOS and ping the other PCs by name or by IP,
but when I try to do a \\name\share or \\IP\share to view it, I get the No
such PC error. Also when I go into the network neighborhood, entire network,
workgroup, it hangs for a long time and eventually comes back showing nothing.
I can't figure out what is causing this and am out of ideas. Can anyone
shed some light on this for me? Others have told me I'm screwed unless I
rebuild (which I don't want to do) but there has to be some sort of solution.
If you need more info, let me know.
Thanks!!

If the problem started directly from the router replacement, then the router is
filtering SMBs, between LAN ports.

You don't give the router make and model. Check the setup guide for either
"DMZ", "VLAN", or "isolation mode". This is a limited firewall between specific
router LAN ports.

Windows XP Network >> Can't browse yo my other PCs after a network change
The router is a Linksys WRT54G running DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com). The
part that is confusing me is that this only affects this one computer. All
the other ones can see each other just fine.
Also, none of these PCs are connected to the router directly. They go to an
8 port switch and all the PCs come off of that switch.

Is everything connected through the switch, and by Ethernet? What's different
about the problem computer?
Look first for a personal firewall or other security component that you had to
configure the subnet or another IP entry into.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html
Or look at logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server",
and "net config workstation", from the problem computer, and from at least 2
others, and diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and
follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Windows XP Network >> Can't browse yo my other PCs after a network change
Oh lord, do I feel dumb now. Just goes to show that even after 10 years of
Desktop Support, sometimes it's the stupdi things you just forget about.
I have Zone Alarm and have been using it for years. However I had my "Home
Network" area setup with my IP range of 192.168.123.1 - 254 since the 123 was
the settings that my original router used. Of course the new one uses
192.168.1.x so ZA wasn't happy about that. Just had to change the 123s to 1s
and now everything is happy.
But the Browstat page you have is what finally made the lightbulb go on in
my head.
Thanks!

YAY! It's Zone Alarm again!
Well, I wrote all of those articles, originally, for ME. So I could remember
all of the details. It was a strange day when I casually browsed into my
SiteMeter logs, and looked at "What are all those folks doing in MY website?".
So I'm glad that my articles were able to help you. Thanks for letting us know.

Any ideas on how to resolve this? I've gone into the file associations and

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Problems with exported video colorI'm having a problem with the color of an exported video. See an example

I encoded a video from an analog camera using a Hauppauge capture card to an

into WMM on Vista. The video imported into WMM and plays fine there, but
after I publish the video I get this result upon playback. The title screen
WMM inserted looks good, but the video is all "pinkish".
Any hints?

- Windows XP Setup >> Windows XP Setup FreezeI have recently changed the motherboard in one of my computer systems at my
workplace. The machines in the office all use identical components, accept
the new motherboard. This of course required me to reinstall windows because
it was a substantial hardware change. The computer boots from the Windows CD,
inspects the hardware, enters setup and begins loading the drivers. Then
before it even gets to the screen where it asks if you want to recover or
install windows, it locks up. Right when it says "SEtup is Starting Windows".
The first time i booted from the CD it got past this point and it allowed me
to format the drive and then reboot, which would then allow me to install
windows. Since then it has locked up everytime. I have tried swapping out
hard drives, the CD-ROM drive, and just about evetything else accept the CPU.
I even tried to run setup with the same CD on several other computers, and it
worked everytime on those. What could be the cause of this problem? I am at a
complete loss as I have been working on this for days.
