I am writing a remote administration script and have run into a little
problem where I could use some help.
Error message: "SWbemLocator: The RPC server is unavailable."
I am using WBEMScripting.SWBEMLocator to connect to computers across several
subnets and domain/non-domain computers (NT/XP).
Computers:
C1 - domain\computer1 (subnet_1) XP SP2
C2 - domain\computer2 (subnet_1) XP SP2
C3 - domain\computer3 (subnet_2) XP SP2
I can connect and run script from C2 against C1 but I cannot run it from C3
against C1 (get RPC error). All computers have firewall enabled but i have
used gpedit to set the exception to remote administration IP-s of C2 and C3
(both domain and standard settings). Also all computers have WMI and RPC
services running.
As I see it either the problem is on machine C3 where I am missing some
settings or C1 needs some RPC settings tweeked. Is there a need to specify
IP-s to RPC if the subnet is different? Also I am using local administrator
accounts to log on to the computers as the script has to work across several
domain/non-domains/subnets.

- Windows XP Hardware >> How to update audio driverHi,
I recently revived an old computer by reloading the operating system.
The only missing link is the sound. I can see the creative audigy
processor and Legacy Audio Driver under hardware, but no audio device
is found. I tried to update the driver and now I see "EMU10KxAudio."
I do not think this is what I need. I used to have a CD for
Soundblaster, but of course, I cannot locate it now. Can I purchase
this somewhere?
My computer is probably four years old and is a HP Pavillion 554e. I
could trash this computer, but have been curious in solving computer
issues and this is my first "project". Kind of like a motorhead with a
"project car" only my kids call me a geek.
Also, the power supply fan sounds loud (not clunky) but just like lots
of air. Do I need to replace this?
Speaking of clunky. My computer says "TURN OFF CLUNKER" at the bottom
of the sign-on screen. Is this an omen?

- Windows XP >> trouble with port 110I was hoping that someone could help me. I have an e-
mail account that is not working in outlook express. I
have windows xp professional with the service pack 1
loaded. The account name is mark@thegehrets.com. I get
an error message of "The connection to the server has
failed. Account: 'mail.hostsave.com',
Server: 'mail.hostsave.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number:
0x800CCC0E" I know that the e-mail account works because
I can get the e-mails on another pc and I have family
that have the same type of account and theres all works.
I tried to troubleshoot the problem with all of the
things that microsoft had said to try on there web page
but none of it worked ex. I tried telnet and I could not
connect. Microsoft said to uninstall the tcp/ip's and
then let windows reload them. I can not delete them in
windows xp. Does anyone know what else I can try to fix
this? I need to know how to get that port umblocked, but
I can not figure out what is blocking it and not allowing
me to use port 110. can anyone help?

I have the following problem:
I want to install McAfee VirusScan ASaP to a huge number
of workstations running Windows 2000 Professional and
Windows XP. These workstations are not members of any
domain and connect to the network using a VPN connection.
The installation of McAfee VirusScan ASaP requires local
administrator rights. Since none of the users have these
rights I would have to visit al these people to perform
the installation.
I'm looking for a solution to perform some sort of
installation using a single file that they would have to
download and execute to perform the installation. Would
it be possibe to give the user local admin rights just
for the time needed to perform this installation?
Does anyone have an idea to resolve this problem?

- Windows XP Support >> Partition or notMy F Drive is an external HD. Prior to my recent crash I'd stored My
Mp3Music,
My Familyphotos etc on there, together with my WinXP NTbackup.
I couldnt get my backup to restore and fouled up.
The nice techie who got me up and running again recommended I buy
Norton Ghost 9
for my future monthly incremental backups, so I did.
I'm now ready to do the first backup (or copy).
Should I have a Partition on my External Drive to segregate the Backup
from my routine store of music and photos as I start to build a new
collection.
If I do oneclick backup of everything this first time I'm unsure
whether next month when I do an incremental backup do I include this
months first backup or just everything else. The pdf userguide is too
technical for me to get to grips with.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> svchost & kernel32 performance problemsMy boss tells me that his PC suffers performance problems after it has
been in use for a while. He believe the problem occurs when he gives
his username and password to bypass the screensaver (windows login).
Analysis so far shows that svchost.exe is using 60-70-80% of processor
time even though no user created tasks are running.
Analysis of the services svchost is launching does not give any leads.
They are all good standard services (e.g. HP Printer Driver, Apple
iTunes (its his own machine) and standard windows services).
Expanding the processes owned by the svchost suggests that kernel32 is
hogging the processor time - Any ideas what could be attached to this?
Killing the kernel32 processes returns the PC to normal with no
obvious adverse effects.
The machine has been scanned for viruses and also for spyware. Nothing
found. The machine has all windows critical patches loaded.
I wanted to rebuild the machine but the boss does not want to do this
because he believes the hours it will cost him in resetting his
machine to his preferred spec are more expensive than the hours it
will cost me to find the cause! (he's probably right).
Is there a way that I can get more detail on what kernel32 is doing at
the time it consumes cpu cycles?
Any help gratefully received.

- customize >> OPEN WITH feature in XPProblem is as follows:
a) When I open a file using the "open With" option by
right-clicking
b) I get a list of programs by which to choose opening
this folder.
c) This list includes programs which I would like to
delete from the OPEN WITH list.
d) How do I do that?

- Windows XP >> Icons dissappear from notification taskbarI am running XP Home with all the latest updates and 500 MB ram.
At times, icons I depend on being there disappear from the notification area
of my taskbar and the only way to restore them is too reboot. This seems to
occur after I have been running the PC for a long time without rebooting,
especially if I have many webpages minimized.
Is this a known bug, memory problem or something else. Can I avoid it
somehow?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Files and settings transfer wizard problem? Please help me!Hi,
I saved my OE messages and settings using the XP files and settings transfer
wizard so I can put it back on my laptop after a XP clean install! That was
last night and I successfully saved the settings on 1GB SD card. I am
trying to transfer it to the Laptop and it asks my to insert disk #1, when I
click ok it says that this is not the correct disk! The backed up data are
on the SD card which is a file called "USMT2IMG"!
I used this wizard many times in the past but I always saved my stuff on a
hard drive partition and never had a problem with it! This time I used the
SD card but that is not working! Please help me get my data back, please!
The stuff I had on it is really hard to replace and would cost me a lot,
possible my job! Thanks in advance.

- Windows XP >> problem saving fileswhen i try to save a word document it acts like it's
saving the document but then it tells me "The file Normal
already exists. Do you wnat to replace th existing
file?" When i try to open the saved document it tells me
it's not available and I can't find it anywhere. I can't
even save to a floppy. HELP

I'm using an Amd X2 cpu with a hitachi hard drive 2gb ddr2 ram. I'm getting
screen freezes and program crashes regular? If i leave the pc on and walk
away 9 times out of ten when i come back the screen has frozen and the mouse
is stuck forcing me to reboot? Is it possible these problems would be
occuring due to my last installation which went bad, when I tried to fix that
installation i used the fixboot command in recovery console could this
command have altered my pc's stability? I'm finding alot more crashes on this
AMD system compared to previous intel cpu's? Is anyone experiencing the same
problems? Is it possible I need a better heatsink? Maybe I should leave the
screen saver switched on to keep the pc thinking? Any advice most welcome.

For starters, any error reports showing up in the Event Viewer? Any
results from the motherboard monitoring system, if one is installed.
If it has been very warm in the computer's location, then overheating
is a distinct possibility. Post back with more information, if any.

buttons. I tried the fixes listed on here about the regedit. The programs are
not there.
I looked in the actual program files and there are no uninstall programs.
What can I do now?

- Windows XP >> screen off centre during bioshi can u help me please im having trouble with my screen during the bios
start up
it is off centre when the bios is starting up then when i get to my password
page my screen is fine and it stayes like that when loaded up.
its a bit annoying because if i press delete to run set up i cant see verry
much of the page,i also tried doing a safe mode start up but the screen is
the same. please help

- Windows XP Setup >> Jumpy scrollingI am going nuts watching my pages rewrite, jump, go in waves repeatedly as I
scroll down a page. I read something about reinstalling your video driver to
fix this problem. Can someone help? I've already tried
unchecking/rechecking all the options to do with smooth scrolling and nothing

The mouse does not work
The drives CDRW and DVD Rom does not work
I have to use the keyboard only to navigate to different programs, I donnot
know if there is a virus since nothen shows up on my antivirus program, I can
see that in the hardware devices the CDRW and DVD Roms have the Interrogation
sign as having a conflict, Also when I tried running and antivirus program
from I.E. I get prompted to download active x controls to initiate donwloads,
but I cannot click on the warning sign to install active x controls since I
cannot use the mouse.. is there anything else I can do? to fix the issues or
do I have to reistall windows? and how can I perform that with a preloaded
version or windows xp...

- Windows XP Setup >> upgraded from 2000 to xpI just upgraded a pc from 2000 to xp. In 2000 she had the pc log in directly
to her desktop. She totally bypass the ctrl+alt+del screen or any logon
credentials. Now in xp it's doing the same thing. She wants the welcome
screen when the pc boots up or reboots.
How do I get the welcome screen to appear upon bootupor restart?

- Windows XP Support >> Playing a wmv crashes windows XP?If I play a wmv with Windows Media Player it crashes windows. I tried
playing it with VLC (VideoLAN Client) and it also crashed This started
happening with wmp 10 and also continued when I upgraded to 11. So I'm
wondering if there's a problem with a codec that these programs both

- Windows XP Hardware >> BiosI worded my question wrong on my last question. I have a hp e-pc 42
computer with XP Pro, the problem is the hardrive is failing, will not
let the CD Rom to work or finish scanes or anything else. So I bought a
new hardrive with a XP Home Edition OP system but I`m not sure of what
to do, to install the the new system properly. I`ve read up on the
install procedure and it calls for an update on the BIOS before I
install the new OP system. Can I upgrade the BIOS then remove old
Hardrive and install new Hardrive then install new OP system?

wizard". This process involves thrashing the hard disk for several
minutes, (usually) manually
identifying the driver location, followed by warnings about unsigned
drivers, more
minutes of disk thrashing, setting a restore point, and then more disk
thrashing.
Sometimes a reboot is required after all that. Finally the hardware is
ready to use.
Next time you connect the device to the same computer, you might use a
different USB port. The device is now seen as "new hardware" and the
entire process described above is repeated.
Why is it necessary to go through the entire driver install process for
each USB
port? The device is the same, the computer is the same, the driver is
the same...
This seems like an unnecessary annoyance. Today's computers have 4 or
even 8 USB ports. Why can't they be logically equivalent? Does anybody
know why this happens? Is there any way to avoid it?

- Windows XP Setup >> Welcome Screen & PasswordI am the administrator and only user of my computer. I
recently asked how to bypass the welcome screen and
followed the directions by going in thru control panel.
This is OK however I now receive a box popping up asking
for a password. As far as I know a password was never
set up and I just click OK without entering one and it
seems to accept this but I don't want to be bothered with
this either.
Is there a way of bypassing this?
