not see it as a usable drive on 'my computer. I see it
in device manager.
Sometimes I get the error that device could not be loaded
due to a missing driver. This just recently happened. i
used to be able to see these devices.

- Windows XP Setup >> Roxio not working on reinstallI needed to reinstall my software that came with my new PC due to constant
crashing issues. Everything has worked perfectly until I reinstalled my
Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.3.4 SP8 Basic. When I attempt to burn a CD, I get a
"Cannot create Creator" error message. I have tried the repair but no luck.
Any other ideas? Thanks!

userdata persistence for Internet Explorer. Complete the steps below, and

Click the Security tab, click the Internet security zone icon, and then
click Custom Level.
In the Settings dialog box, scroll to the Miscellaneous section.
Under Userdata persistence , select Enable.
Click OK and when the security warning dialog box appears, click Yes.

- Windows XP Hardware >> XP home won't let me install new driverI have a Radeon 9700Pro and I need to put the latest drivers on. So, I turn
off system restore and uninstall the drivers from add/remove. So far so
good. But then I have to reboot to complete the uninstall process, and
here's where XP automatically puts on the old drivers (complete with a
little icon telling me this) without any input from me! How on earth am I
supposed to update my GFX card driver?

- Windows XP Network >> PPPoE ConnectionI am using SBC Yahoo DSL and everytime I start the
Connection Manager I get the "Connection Settings" window
and it says "Creating the PPPoE connection..." It takes
from 2 -3 minutes to make this connection and sometimes
it just stays there and the action never completes. The
folks at SBC say it is a Windows XP issue. Can anyone help

domain, the last user name appears and all I need to
enter is his password. How can I set this machine (or
all machines in my domain, for that matter) to blank the
User ID after a reboot or logout?

- Windows XP >> Emachine M2350 won't boot WindowsHi y'all,
A couple nights ago I left my computer on and the next day I found the
laptop doing some strange boot process where it would automatically
boot after 30 seconds or it would ask me how i wanted to boot windows..
my friend was able to pull up a screen by using F8 and determined that
the problem was caused by a Windows update called Service Pack 2..
I've been in contact with emachines tech support for the past week
hoping that they would help me get my computer back into running mode
but unfortunately nothing has helped so far.. I ordered the Restore CD
packaged and recieved it in the mail today. I attempted to use these
cds but nothing happened when i put it in my dvd/cd drive.
CAN SOMEONE HELP ME? HOW DO I DO SYSTEM RESTORE USING THESE CDS?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Compaq Presario 2500 Series - Screen ProblemI have what I can only describe a small 'shadow' which has appeared in the
bottom corner of my screen. I don't believe its a pixel problem. What I
want to do is reduce the size of the display area by about 3mm to try and
remove the 'shadow' - it is easily done on CRT monitor but I don't know how
to do it on a laptop screen - anyone any ideas? Reducing the screen
resolution does not decrease the display area.

out a solution.
While I have quite a bit of LAN experience, my WAN knowledge is rather
limited.
I have a network currently setup as follows:
DSL Internet --> DSL Router
DSL Router ---> Hub ---> Server 1

\--> Switch ---> Server 2
\--> 8 Workstations
***** Here's what I *NEED* to be able to do:
1> I have to find a way for people in an office 20 miles away to have a
remote connection to one of the Workstations on Server 2's workgroup.
2> I would like to not purchase any additional software.
3> Both locations have broadband internet connections.
4> I think a VPN connection would work best for this project, but I am
unsure how to set one up, especially through a router.
NOTES:
All computers are new Dell desktops running WinXP Pro with all the latest
service packs and hotfixes installed.
Server 1 and the one workstation HAVE to be a specific workgroup name.
Server 2 and the associated 8 workstations HAVE to be a different specific
workgroup name.
The Router is a 3COM OfficeConnect Secure Router 3CR860-95.
I have two static IP's available for use from my ISP.
The computers on the remote location are all running Windows 2000 Pro and
are part of a domain with an old NT 4.0 server.
I've seen you guys work miracles with other tech problems posed here. I'm
hoping for some of that help to come my way.

- Windows XP >> XP Home won't start, just reboots after splash screenAfter running Disk Defragmenter my computer was not
operating properly, so I restarted the computer. When it
restarted shortly after getting the XP Home splash screen
the system blue screened and immediately restarted. One
cannot read the blue screen because it only flashes on
the screen. When I tried the safe mode the system hung
at MUP.SYS. I disabled MUP.SYS, but then the system just
hangs at the next item that loads. I have replaced the
kernel and the startup files from the repair option
during setup. Nothing seems to fix the problem.

Make sure the taskbar is not locked. Then position the cursor at the top of
the taskbar so that you see the double arrows pointing up and down and drag
the taskbar down to a single column height.

Interesting, I would like to have the day of the week to be shown and
I don't know how.
It used to be there but was probably removed by one of the updates.
When one is retired everyday is Sunday.

- Windows XP >> Intellitype software causing lagHey guys and gals; I tried to find the correct newsgroup and this is where I
ended up, so please bear with me.
I recently formatted because of a bad HDD and have WinXP Pro SP2. When I
play World of Warcraft in windowed mode (which means that the game only takes
up a portion of the screen instead of 100% of the screen) the video will lag
very much if I press any button that causes intellitype software to generate
a pop-up notification on the screen (such as Num Lock, Caps Lock, Volume up
or down). If I turn up the Anti-Aliasing on my video card settings to a
higher setting, the lag becomes much much worse. However, if i play when the
game takes up 100% of the screen (like any normal game would run) I get zero
lag / chop when I press the aforementioned buttons on my keyboard no matter
how strong the Anti-Aliasing may be. I've tried setting World of Warcraft on
high priority and it doesn't help. Any other suggestions?

P.S. just wanted to mention that I didn't have this problem before the
format and I'm using the same intellitype software as before.

- Windows XP Network >> VPN client in Windows XPI am trying to configure some Windows XP Professional
systems to connect to a VPN server. I have no problem
establishing the tunnel with a regular LAN Internet
connection. However, when I hook the computer up to a DSL
modem that uses PPPoE to provide its service, I cannot get
the VPN client to send the packets out the virtual
interface... Windows keeps trying to put them on the LAN
instead of rerouting the specified IP block through the
VPN tunnel. I am using both the Windows XP PPPoE client
and the Windows XP VPN client under SP1. There are no
Internet connectivity problems in play here, it is simply
that when the Internet connection is provided by PPPoE
instead of Ethernet, packets destined for the specific
remote network are not sent through the PPPoE client. Do I
have a misconfiguration? Does something have to be changed
to make this work with the dreadful PPPoE? Is this
insurmountable?? Any help will be appreciated.

PS
Another thing I wonder about is dynamic IPs - is there any
way for Windows' VPN client to learn its IP address for
the local tunnel endpoint? If you get your IP dynamically,
then every time it changes you have to go in and change
the tunnel endpoint. Is there a better way?? Thank you all

- Windows XP Hardware >> graphics card driver problemWhen using games my computer crashes and restarts. When my
computer boots up again I send an error report and I get
informed that my graphics card driver is unstable, I use an
'inno3d tornado GeForce 4 MX 440 128MB', the drivers are
the latest signed drivers. I have no viruses. Sometimes
when the computer crashes it comes up with a blue screen
stating something about disabling BIOS memory, caching and
shadowing. It also said something about the file:
nv4_4mini.sys.
Any help on overcoming this problem would be greatly
appreciated, thanks very much.

I've just networked 2 home computers via a dsl router. pc1 runs win2000,
pc2 runs winXP. Accessing win2000 via My Network Places asks for a logon
name and password. Accessing winXP computer simply opens up the shared
folder. How do I configure winXP to require a logon name and password before
sharing files?

The first incident in. June 1990 was when a BBC newsreader made what seemed
to be a reaction to something which had happened in my home,. and out of
context of. what they were reading. My first reaction was disbelief; nothing
of the sort had ever happened before, the idea that such a thing. could
occur had not. crossed my mind, yet there was no doubt of what had just
taken place. My disbelief eroded. as this recurred time after time. Besides
the news, offenders. included shows such as Crimewatch (!), Newsnight, and
"entertainment" shows. There seems. to be very little moral understanding
among the people who make these programmes; they just assume. they will
never be caught,. so they carry on without a thought for the illegality or
amorality of what they do.. The only time I ever heard a word raised in
doubt was. by Paxman being interviewed by someone else (I think by Clive
Anderson) back in 1990; referring to the "watching" he said. it troubled
him, and when asked. by the host what you could do about it, replied "Well,
you could just. switch it off" (meaning the surveillance monitor in the
studio). He clearly didn't let his. doubts stand in the way of continued
surreptitious. spying from his own or other people's shows, though.
Now you're convinced this. is a troll, aren't you? This story has been the
subject of much. debate on the uk.* Usenet newsgroups for over a year, and
some readers believe. it to be an invention (it has even been suggested that
a group of psychology students are responsible!), others think. it
symptomatic of a derangement of the author, and. a few give it credence.
Quite a few people do. know part or all of the story already, so this text
will fill in. the gaps in their knowledge. For the rest, what may persuade
you of the. third possibility is that some of the incidents detailed are
checkable. against any archives of radio and TV programmes that exist; that

On several occasions people said to my face that harassment. from the TV was

aside, "Is he the bloke. who's been on TV?" to which Phil replied, "Yes, I

employed professional counter-surveillance people to scan. for bugs (see
later) again without result. In autumn 1990 I disposed of my TV. and watched
virtually no television for. the next three years. But harassment from TV
stations has gone on for over six years and continues to. this day. This is
something that many. people obviously know is happening; yet the TV staff
have. the morality of paedophiles, that because they're getting away with it
they. feel no wrong.
Other people who were involved in the. abuse in 1990 were DJs on BBC radio
stations, notably disc jockeys from Radio 1 and other stations (see. the
following section). Again, since they don't have sense in the first. place
they can't be expect to have the moral sense not to be part of. criminal
harassment.

- Windows XP Support >> lsass.exe System errorRecently a computer I am servicing gave following error; "any I/O operation
initiated by the registry failed unrecoverable. The registry could not read
in, write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of
the registry." The computer then goes into reboot. Researching MS
information I learned it MAY be a virus. I low level formatted the hard
drive, purged CMOS, high level the drive and re-installed windows xp with
SP/2. It comes up with same error and constantly reboots. Will stay up in
safe-mode.
In running MS Article ID # 883268 I find my KDCSVC is not installed.
Any assistance??

need to field phone calls. Recently a call came in on my phone while I was
on the internet and before I could click to take the call the caller hung up.
Since that time I have a roaring noise on my speakers. HELP

- Windows XP Hardware >> Modem(s) problemI have two identical d-link data/fax/voice modems
installed in my XP machine. Modem 1 is on PCI slot 1 and
modem 2 is on pci slot 2, both use different IRQ's and
system properties shows no conflicts.
I am using Modem 1 to fax from and it is connected to the
switchboard, and works fine to both send and receive.
Modem 2 is connected to its own line and is used for
accessing internet on a direct dial basis.
The problem occurs when the fax software - wether it be
XP's own or Winfax Pro - is open. Modem two appears to be
unavailable and as such I cannot dial out from moodem 2.
When the fax software is shutdown modem 2 re-appears and I
can dial out.
Any suggestions on how to make both modems available at
the same time with the fax software on auto receive mode?

- Windows XP >> Task bar shrinkageHello,
I have this weird problem, well, it's more of a nuisance, but still, I'd
like to fix it if possible.
I have moved my task bar to the right of my screen, so that it's vertical
now. It's three "spaces" wide, and with that I mean that I can put 3 icons
next to each other in QuickLaunch.
Unfortunately, whenever I start the computer, Windows shrinks the task bar
by one of these "spaces", and I have to manually resize it. As I said, no big
deal, but I am kind of tired of having to do this.
I tried leaving it alone, but then the next time Windows will shrink it down
to 1 "space", and that's really not good for me.
So, does anybody know what's going on here, and how I can tame the beast?

to remove/re-install XP?

came with the TRENDnet rooter - 'Broadband IP Gateway + Fast EtherSwitch' -
when I open the program I see a profile for both computers, but neither have
an actual internet connection.
Chuck you said "Enable DHCP on the router, and setup the router per your
ISP's service." you overestimate my knowledge lol...what is DHCP and how
would I go about enabling it and setting up my ISP's service???
I also have no idea what the DHCP client is, or how I'd go about enabling
that...I think I know how to get IP addresses though.

I have reviewed dozens of Web pages and newsgroup threads discussing
the problems with symptoms similar to what I observe (see below), but
so far neither of the recipes I found worked for me... I'm desperate,
and would like to avoid reinstalling the OS and all other software by
all means. Please help!
The main frustrating symptoms are:
(1) On too many Web pages, most of the images do not show up (like if
they couldn't be found). I see spots with red crosses instead. There
must be some sort of timeout involved, because I see browser trying to
get those images for some time and then "giving up". Refreshing
usually does not help. What does help (in every other case) is
right-clicking a red-crossed placeholder and asking the browser to
"Show picture"...
(2) Some Web pages just cannot be loaded at all. After some trying,
the browser says "Page cannot be displayed", like if the page didn't
exist.
(3) The last observation that may be relevant is the behavior of
nslookup program: it just cannot resolve any names! Neither with 2
seconds timeout, nor with 10 seconds timeout -- it almost always
complains that there was no response from the DNS server. Yes, namely
_almost_ always, because once in a while nslookup does manage to see
some response from DNS... Again, the most confusing thing is that the
browser doesn't seem to have any problems with resolving domain
names... or does it? Is it possible that failures of image downloads
are caused by some problem with DNS client?..
(4) I'm not absolutely sure, but it seems that the problems described
above started to harrass me only recently - after I applied a large
series of patches/upgrades from Microsoft's Windows Update service
(including Windows XP Home SP1a and Internet Explorer 6 SP1).
My current configuration is:

OS: Windows XP 2002 Home Edition SP1

As you can see, this notebook accesses the Internet via another
computer in may home LAN; that gateway computer is running Routing and
Remote Service under Windows 2000 Server and has no _any_ problems
with Internet access over 56K PPP-dialup (so everything must be just
fine with my ISP and their DNS servers).
FWIW: Both computers also run ZoneAlarm firewalls, but I really doubt
that it has anything to do with the problem in question (at least,
shutting both firewalls down doesn't change a bit in my dare
situation).
Please help, save me from insanity!

- Windows XP Network >> Offline Files troubleOk, I ran into a VERY strange problem today. Last night i setup one of
our mobile users for offline files( he is the first in our company to
ever use it) so i went to our shared drive for the home folders(
\\server\home$, that everyone has a folder in. mapped to U: on their
work stations, and that My Documents is redirected to) so, anyway i
gave domain users read permissions on that folder, and got the laptop
setup for offline folders, synced and called it a night. This morning
when i get in i get calls from almost everyone in our company saying
that their U: drive has a funny little icon on it. So i go and look and
now everyone in our company has their home directories showing that
they are offline files, when people log on and off windows syncs the
files and everything. So my question is, how on earth did this happen?
I didnt change GPO because we never set any of the options as far as
offline files. So i have no idea how it got started or how to fix it.
Any insight would be very helpful. Thanks
