- Windows XP Support >> XP Pro won't bootI have a computer that won't boot after an electrical outage. the error
message states "explorer.exe unable to locate componet" "this application
failed to start because 'cryptui.dll' was not found".
the file 'cryptui.dll' is in the system32 folder but windows won't boot
because of the above message. I have tried to rename and replace the file but
can't. I have tried replacing it using recovery console, putting the hard
drive in another system as second drive the trying to copy the file but
windows will not let me do anything.
this file from what I have read is part of a service pack.
Is there any way to fix this problem without reformat and reload windows xp
pro.
Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> Rundll32.exe holding sysdm.cpl openHi,
I have found that I'm unable to access the System icon in the control panel.
I double click and nothing happens. I think the reason this is happening is
because for some reason rundll32.exe is using that file.
A look at the process list shows :
RUNDLL32.EXE "C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe"
Shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL sysdm.cpl
3652
Also if I terminate rundll32.exe from the task manager I can then access the
system icon, so that's definatley the cause.
The question therefore is what's causing rundll32.exe to use the System
control panel icon and then not let it go.
Thanks.

I'd like the "sendtox" option when I right-click a folder/file etc.
Is there a safe way to add that capability in XP?

- Windows XP Network >> NetworkingHello, smart world out there! I am trying to set up a wireless network in my
home. Do I need to do this AND set up a home network? I am confused, and
nothing I've tried yet works. I did set up a "network" that my own computer
acknowleges, but none of the other computers in my home appear to.
(Is there a way to delete this unneeded network if I do not need it?) Just
so you know, the computers in my house appear to all share the same internet
connection and printer already, but i also want them to be able to share
files (and hopefully to be able to link up via remote accress), and that does
not appear to be happening. Any wise advice would be sincerely appreciated -

- Windows XP Security >> DEP FUN, CONFUSION, AND HYPOCRISYI'm restarting my computer as usual, when all of a sudden, DEP appears,
stating that Windows Explorer needs to be closed. So I do, screen goes blank,
and Windows Explorer re-appears. I read Help, and I try to tell DEP not to
close Windows Explorer, however, to do that, I need to go to Control Panel.
And when I go to Control Panel, the computer doesn't let me, because DEP
appears, says Windows Explorer need to be closed. then the process starts all
over again.
I have restarted 6 times already, and it's still not working (going to
Control Panel), and Windows Explorer has stopped re-appearing/remained blank,
except for a:
Windows Explorer needs to be closed.

- Windows XP Security >> I need more helpMy McAfee Virus Scan wasn't working and would not reinstall. I followed advice I got on here and tried Panda, which located and cleaned the virus which was affecting my McAfee. I was then able to reinstall my McAfee Virus Scan. But now it still won't update. McAfee tech told me it was because I have Panda software on my computer now and they are conflicting. He said I need to completely uninstall the Panda software. It doesn't show up in my Add/Remove section, only in my Registry Editor. Can someone tell me how to completely remove this Panda software? Thanks.

Windows XP MovieMaker >> Unable to save to computer
In the past I used MM2 without problem. I have not used it for several
months. Now when I use it everything is normal until I try to save to my
computer. I get an error message that the source files are missing or there
is not enough disk space. I do not believe that this is the case. Any idea
as to what is wrong and what I can do to fix it.
Thanks

PapaJohn, did some reading on your web page which indicated an old QAFS.dll
could be the problem. I have version 6.4.2600. Question, how do I get an
updated version.

Windows XP MovieMaker >> Unable to save to computer
Hi Roy,
I have the exact same problem as you described but I have
no luck like you are. My DLL file is up-to-date (9+
version) to start with. I have tried to re-install MM2
too. What procedure did you do exactly to solve it?
I also try to access PapaJohn's website but the menu
items won't show up. Can't dig any more info. other than
checking all the message threads here. Please post any
solution link here, PapaJohn. Thanks!

Windows XP MovieMaker >> Unable to save to computer
Thanks for the links, PapaJohn!
There are lot of information and I'll go over all of them
to see if I can come up with a solution.
So far, I have no luck with the following methods:
1. re-install WM2
2. update my computer with latest Direct X 9.0b
The current version of my qasf.dll is: 9.00.00.2980 built
by: lab03_dev(bld4act).
It is very frustrating that I can only save the movie in
AVI, but not any other format.
Btw, I have tried to access your web site a month ago and
the menu just won't show up at all. Refresh the screen
doesn't work either. I am using Internet Explorer 6.
I also try to ask Microsoft for help but you know what,
it indicates I have a OEM OS and it points me to talk to
DELL instead. Come on! Who writes the software?

- Windows XP Security >> Spyware InfectionEver since visiting what I thought was a safe website earlier today, I've
continuted to receive this message:
"Your computer is in Danger!
Windows Security Center has detected a spyware/adware infection!
It is strongly recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data
loss.
Click here to install the latest protection tools!"
I've tried clicking the balloon that pops up, but nothing happens. I've also
done a Spyware Scan with Mircosoft Anti-Spyware and it came up with no
results. What should I do?
Also, this may be related somehow. Since this "infection", the task manager
has been disabled by my administrator. However, I am the administrator, and I
never disabled the task manager. What's going on?

- Windows XP Setup >> FILES - Need to Rename Several Files At OnceHi.
XP has a method for renaming a series of files so that they have all the
same name and are then numbered, but I need to do something else, and I'm
not sure how.
I'm converting documents from an old word processor to MSWord and maybe Word
itself can do this, but I was first looking for some kind of system batch
file.
I want to change, for an example,
Monday.JAN
Tuesday.JAN
Wednesday.JAN
to
Monday JAN.DOC
Tuesday JAN.DOC
Wednesday JAN.DOC
That sort of thing. There are hundreds of files and I'm hoping someone
knows of a way to bulk-rename the files that way, rather than having a
folder full of Monday JAN (1).DOC, Monday JAN (2).DOC, and so on.
Thanks in advance for any help.

- Windows XP Network >> Getting "Access Denied"Hi,
I have a home network of four pc's. Three have Xphome
and one XP pro. They are connected through a linksy
router. On my machine, (one of the xp home) I can see and
access all other shares. The problem is that none of the
others can access mine. I share my cable internet with
all with no problem and all of the others can see and
access each other files. I'm at a loss here. What have I
done on mine that prevents them from accessing? All are
in the same workgroup with different pc names. If I use
view workgroup computers from one of the others mine
shows up but cannot be accessed. Any help will be deeply
appreciated!!

- Windows XP Security >> XP Home sharing and securityI'm trying to help a friend who has a set of XP Pro
systems in a domain with a Win2003 SBS Server. This
domain (companyname.net) and the PCs in it happen to be on
the same LAN in their office as his wife's business, which
only has 2 PCs, both running XP Home (no domain, just the
workgroup "office"). They need to share a folder between
the 2 PCs running XP Home, but they want to make sure the
share can not be accessed from the other systems that are
part of the companyname.net domain. I know you can boot
the XP Home system in Safe Mode, and gain access to the
full security settings. The problem is, I don't know what
to add or change to make sure only the 2 systems in the XP
Home Workgroup can see the shares, and deny access to the
systems in the companyname.net domain. If I
remove "everyone", it denies access to the domain PCs, but
also denies access to the other XP Home PC. Suggestions?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Slow XP Pro Anyone else?Hello to anyone else experiencing the same problems I
am. I'm running Windows XP Pro SP1 and have all the
critical updates installed and find that now my computer
takes like 10 minutes to load any software programs, it
does not matter which ones either, Word, Disk
Defragmenter (which I run frequently 2 to 3 times a week)
and any other programs. I can almost go eat dinner and
then come back and the program(s) will then all the
sudden come up? Was wondering why such a delay, with a
good working hard drive and all equipment working
perfectly? Thanks if anyone finds an answer to this
puzzling problem? Will check the CPU usage but it hasn't
been high normally either?

I checked the Microsoft updates troubleshooter webpages
