- Windows XP >> Changing Media Player default for audio CDI am using XP SP2.
When I double click on my CD drive icon with an audio CD in the drive, it
opens up a screen asking me to install Windows Media Player 10. I do not
wish to do this. I would like to use one of my other media players.
I've gone to the properties for the CD drive and under AutoPlay tab selected
"ask me ...." but still when I double click on the CD drive icon, it opens
up the screen to install Windows Media Player.
How do I change that behavior?

- Windows XP >> Problems RepairingI'm having difficulty repairing an XP Home machine with
NTFS. On boot, I'm told that the System file is corrupt.
Booting from the CD and choosing repair, I get a prompt
to choose the XP directory. There's only one, which I
selct. After that, nothing happens. If I try again and
choose Install, the systems proceeds to installation, and
then the message appears on the screen that it is
searching for existing Windows installations. After that,
nothing happens. If I can get through to the OS, I have a
system level back from about a month ago that can get me
most of where I need to go, but I can't get that far. Can
anyone suggest how I can get Windows back to the point
where I can sed the drive?

run xp home on mine.
Suddenly after returning home from a 10 day absence, my
network does not work. Have run the setup a few times, no
luck. Now I do not even have access to my workgroup,
cannot even see my computer on the network.
Help please.

- Windows XP >> network neighborhoodHi!
I have a 3 computer LAN set up, and have an innane question. On two of the
systems, when I display the network, it shows the shared files on each of
the computers, while the third shows under the heading "Local Network" the
shared files on itself, then under the secound heading "The Internet" it
shows the other two computers shared files. I assume there must be a setting
for this, and I like the way the two headings look (how anal can you get?).
Things like this drive me nuts! Does anyone have any idea??
Thanks,

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> problem with msinfo32.exeI have a problem opening NFO files when they are stored in folders that have
spaces in the name. For Example: Opening directly from C:\ runs fine but if I
place the file in C:\Documents and Settings\, I get the error that the file
cannot open or is corrupt. I have searched everywhere for an answer to this
problem but have not found anything helpful yet. Anyone else having this
problem? If not, try it and see what happens. Run the tool and then save the
file to a folder that has spaces and see what happens. Any help on this would
be nice.

- Windows XP Hardware >> USB Flash DriveI have been using a USB flash drive in working between two machines, one
running on XP and the other running on 2000. I have had several instances of
directories being created that are "00000000.00". when I try to delete them,
I am told they are corrupt. They have usually been created as sub
directories and have replaced the data that was originally in the directory.
One of my co-workers thought it may have to do with deleting files and not
emptying my recycling. Does anyone know anything?

- Windows XP Setup >> USB Controller driver won't installOn Win XP (sp2), fully patched.
Because I could not get a new flash drive to work, I uninstalled
all of the USB controller devices drivers.
Now I can't get them back.
I have an Asus PTGD1-LA, Intel chipset 915G
Northbridge - i915G graphics and memory controller hub.
Souhtbridge - ICH6 Intel I/O controller Hub 5
I have tried installing the latest drivers from Intel,
but all I get is.
"There was a problem installing this hardware
Universal Serial Bus (USB) controller
The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry."
I have pointed the hardware wizard to the internet and to my hard drive.
I still get the same message.
Any Help would be appreciated.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> usb device when plugged in is making a whirring noiseHello,
I have a number of USB devices to hook up to my computer. I have an
ipod and a wireless desktop. I but the logitech 5000 wireless desktop, am
running a athlon 3400 with 2 gigs of ram, asus k8n mobo. I just installed the
new keyboard and I plugged the receiver into the usb port, and the computer
started to make this whirring sound that I have heard before.
When my ipod was first hooked up to the computer. I would get a "THIS DEVICE
CAN PERFORM FASTER" window, but I updated the driver and the noise went away
and the performance of usb 2.0 worked, but this issue with the keyboard and
mouse being hooked up i have not found any answers for. I just want it to
stop making noise. I also think that the device isn't perform at usb 2.0, but
at 1.1. any advice would be appreciated

- Windows XP Hardware >> Does XP "bad spot" drives? If XP encounters an unrecoverable hardware-related I/O error on a drive,
does it mark that block (or whatever the smallest addressable chunk on
the disk might be) bad, so that it won't be allocated to another file in
the future?

Windows XP Hardware >> Installing Windows XP on AMD Athlon 64 FX system
I am looking to purchase an AMD Athlon 64 FX processor
and compatable motherboard and RAM to install into my
computer. I also will be replacing the hard drive and
reinstalling Windows XP. Now, I've read in the following
article:
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/article/1651/ ,
that installing the original Windows XP straight from the
CD on an Athlon 64 FX system will result in a crash, that
I need to install Windows XP with the SP1a. And
unfortunately for me, the copy of Windows XP that I own
is the original one before the service pack was released.
Naturally, I dont want to have to spend $200 on an OS
that I already have just to get it to work with my new
CPU. Does anyone know any more information about this
situation, or is there a way I can get around this
problem without buying another copy of XP?

- Windows XP Network >> Renoving IPX causes the following issue...We have XP Pro, SP1 (we are a corp network that has reasons not to be on

upon reboot the PC does not get it's mapped Win2000/2003 server drives. The
pc will see the novell mapped drives, but not any microsoft mapped drives. We
use the novell login client, and all of our mapped drives are mapped via
login script. The users themselves don't have the ability to create a mapped
drive.
Why can we no longer see the MS mapped drives but can see the Novell drives?

- Windows XP Setup >> De-activating read-only in Microsoft productsI had a IT person come and set up my new Dell Laptop Precision. Set-up went
well. For some reason, I overlooked purchasing Office with my order, and
had to go out and buy Office Profesional Edition 2003 and had it installed.
My files were all transferred from my old machine, also a Dell on Microsoft
Office. Now I can open and read my files, but I can not save them. When I
do, I get a message says there have been changes that will affect the normal
global template and that the file is read only and permission is needed to
save the changes from the system administrator (me). The instructions for
changing it tell me to go the the "prompt to save Normal Template" box under
Tools/Options/Save, and uncheck that box but that box is unchecked. I have
searched for the set-up box that alows me to change the settings, but have
not located it (after working with it for 6 hours). Is there anyone who has
anu ideas of how to troubleshoot this situation. At this point, I am unable
to work any files because the system will not allow me to save them as word
documents, and when I save them as in the normal template, the changes are
not intact.

- Windows XP Update >> download successful, installation hangsHi There
I am running xp pro sp2. Various updates have downloaded but when I try to
install any of them, I get a "Initialising Updates" screen which then just
hangs.
When I try to cancel out of it, the screen updates to "Canceling Updates"
but then hangs again. The only way to get out of it is via the Windows Task
Manager.

- Windows XP Network >> Deterministic Network EnhancerRecently I started having odd and inconsistant network
problems. I travel and use a lot of different
connections. The network always connects and status
shows packets coming and going. I tried unloading and
reloading (along with everything else I could think of)
the network services. When I started to reload DNE the
first dialoge box says it is digitally signed. But when
I go ahead and load it I get the "not digitally signed"
dialoge. I suspect somewhere the right version got
overwritten. But I do not know the file name or where to
look. Any ideas.

little bits.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Remove device using DEVCON.EXE?When I try to remove a device using DEVCON.EXE it seems to break up the
command in to several independent commands whenever there is a &-sign.
F.ex. I have a USB device with device instance ID:
USB\VID_0529&PID_0001\5&3A341374&0&2
But when I try to remove it this happens:
H:\wsh>devcon hwids USB\VID_0529*
USB\VID_0529&PID_0001\5&3A341374&0&2
Name: Hardlock USB 1.02
Hardware ID's:
USB\Vid_0529&Pid_0001&Rev_0100
USB\Vid_0529&Pid_0001
Compatible ID's:
USB\Class_ff&SubClass_00&Prot_00
USB\Class_ff&SubClass_00
USB\Class_ff
1 matching device(s) found.
H:\wsh>devcon remove USB\VID_0529&PID_0001\5&3A341374&0&2
No devices removed.
The system cannot find the path specified.
'3A341374' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
'0' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
'2' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
So how do I tell DEVCON.EXE that the &-sign is part of the ID and should
be used to identify and remove the device?
