- Windows XP Hardware >> boot problemhi, my friends computer isnt booting up and none of the
safe mode or debug modes boot either. He uses windows XP
Home edition and he has SP1. I am trying to get into the
recovery console, but his computer did not come with an XP
disk(or he lost it, he's not sure). I have a windows XP
proffesional disk but when i try to access the recovery
console it asks for an administrator password and nothing
will work. he says none of the accounts on his computer
have a password. I tried the default
password "administrator" and that didnt work either. Is
it possible to even use the recovery console on a home
edition computer with an xp proffesional disk? if so how
can i get into the recovery console if the passwords arent
working? thanks in advaced to any help with this problem.

- Windows XP Support >> KERNEL32.DLLWhen I try to open the Index under the help section of Arcsoft
Photoimpresssion, I get the following error message:
"the procedure entry point MapSLFix could not be located in the dynamic link
library kernel32.dll"
Can anyone tell me how to fix this as I have NO idea what it is and I am
fairly computer literate.

- Windows XP >> Non-printable characters in dialog boxesDoes anyone know what XP file builds the dialog boxes for the accessory
programs for "save before close" and the print execution status? All text
except the file name is question marks or unprintable "squares". I see it in
Paint and other MS native tools and with third party applications like
TurboCad only. Office apps are fine. I obviously have a corrupt file
somewhere as problem recently arose on only one of three similar computers.
Not losing sleep over this, but inquiring minds need to know.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Change RAID controller drivers in order to boot into XPI would like to upgrade a 3Ware 6000 series card running
RAID 5 under XP Pro to a 7000 series card as the 6000
series performance is poor running RAID 5. The problem is
that I have installed XP on the array. I would like to
figure out how to change the driver in XP w/o being able
to boot into XP. According to 3Ware the 7000 series card
will read an array created with a 6000 series card as the
configuration is the same.
Can I use the XP install CD to load the new driver from a
floppy into the XP so it will boot / run?
I seem to remember doing something like this years ago
with NT 4 by going through the motions of a install /
repair but then closing it down just after the option to
load a 3rd party SCSI driver was completed or was it
using HAL???
Any help would be appreciated. Re-installing the OS, all
drivers and software on the primary partition is not
something I want to do for x-mas.

- Windows XP Network >> Pinging 192.168.1.x IP address returns wrong IPI have a couple Windows XP Pro machines with most of the updates.
I have 12 of them at remote locations. I am using Netgear's VPN client to
connect to the main office for the remote locations to enter their
accounting data.
This has worked pretty well on several PCs. However, on a few of them, when
I ping any address at 192.168.1.x, it will return ping results for
10.44.something. I don't remember the exact IP address. I did google the
IP address just in case but I didn't come up with anything good.
I noticed this on two machines after installing the VPN client.
Interestingly enough, it happens both when connected and disconnected from
the VPN.
My first thought was spyware. I used ad aware and spybot on the machines
with caught a little..nothing significant. But didn't fix anything. I used
this WinXP TCP/IP fix program that I found on the web. I like using it for
certain spyware that screws up the protocol in some way. But that did
nothing. I'm pretty good at eradicating most destructive spyware. Somehow
though, I still think it's spyware...but I almost want to blame the VPN
software. I actually uninstalled the VPN software on one of the machines to
make sure
the problem would still exist. It still returned the wrong address.
So, I'm stuck. I'm not sure what troubleshooting there is left to do.
Pinging an IP address to me seems like the most basic test to see if TCP/IP
is working. I would assume it's not DNS...since pinging an IP address
shouldn't query a DNS server.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do next?
Thank you!

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Virtual Memory Low Too EasilyWindows XP Home Edition contains primarily video files. But even when
nothing except IE is open, a little surfing will cause the Virtual Memory to
go to the long self adjustment procedure. This renders even IE useless until
the adjustment is made. (Several to many minutes.) Problem seems to have
intensified since networking to the WAN via ISDN, too. Ideas? Set a manual
page file memory size?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Please Help - Tun MiniportDear All,
for no obvious reason I have just ended up having a device under the Network
folder of Device Manager called " Microsoft Tun Miniport Adaptor #2".
I have absolutely no clue whatsoever what I have done to cause this and I
have not installed anything at all apart from pulling in the latest updates
and NOT the SP2 yet.
I can not uninstall this as the warning message says "Unable to install,
device maybe needed to boot the computer with....)
This is not causing me any problem yet! but is simply very annoying to have
something that shows to be conflicting.
Many thanks in advance for your help

- Windows XP Hardware >> Drive E is not showingPeriodically, I try to access Drive E and it tells me
that there is no drive E. Normally I reboot and WHAM,
there it is, where it is supposed to be. This happens
about every month or so.
This morning, I tried to access Drive E via the shortcut,
AND by looking in My computer, and it is not recognizing
it. No matter how many times I have rebooted, it is not
finding it.
What can I do? I am not that good at troubleshooting. I
am a frustrated teacher who is trying to access grades
for my class before I go to school.
Can anyone help me out?

- Windows XP Setup >> Reinstall of XP Pro restarts at start of GUII had a problem w/ my XP Pro SP1 install, so I reinstalled "in place" from
the SP1 CD (i.e. not a clean install).
When install's GUI phase starts, the mouse cursor appears and turns into a
"wait" cursor for a few seconds, then the machine reboots. I never see
the normal status screen of the GUI phase.
I've tried re-doing the "in place" install several times, to no avail.
I've searched through USENET and the Microsoft web site and tried several
suggestions, none of which helped.
I can boot the machine to another partition, but would really like to get
this install up and running.
I'm at a loss to try to figure this out. Any help is appreciated.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Can't transfer project to my DV cam anymoreI have done several short projects using still photos and music. Transfered
all of them to my DV cam. Worked great. I have now completed a very long
project, 44 minutes. Went to transfer it, got the error message that the
system needed to shut down. I do not have IE7. I tried to transfer some of
the old shorter projects over again, got the error message this time as well.
The program did crash several times over the weeks I was working on this
project. It would just freeze up. Any help would be appreciated. Please know
that I do not know much about computers. I have read a lot on this group, but
not sure which, if any, of these cures is best.

- Windows XP >> Print Job - Cancelling - Why so long? Can anybody explain why it (sometimes - most generally) takes so long to
Cancel a Print Job (Control Panel/Printers & Faxes)?? I find a job in a
given printer's Print List - highlight it and click Cancel - and, XP tells
me that it is cancelling it... but, nothing happens for a long time. I
usually take a coffee break..) Is there a faster way to cancel a job??
(The reason I need to cancel so often is that I have two types of printers
on my computer (one for high volume b/w printing and the other for low
volume color) with a Centronixs A/B switch... Of course, every now and then
we "click" on one printer while we are "pointed" at the other... Of curse,
the "other" printer starts spitting out volumes of @#$%&(^%$#@# - with no
intention of ever stopping until all paper is gone... arg.... )

- Windows XP >> IP address not "findin" automatically as it shouldI was hit with lightening yesterday and had to get a new cpu and router. One

- Windows XP Security >> File and Print Sharing QuestionI have a question about File and Print Sharing in relation to
Administrator shares (C$, Admin$, IPC$). My question is, does File
and Print Sharing have to be installed AND enabled in order for me to
access Administrator shares? From what I read in other newsgroup
posts, all that matters is that File and Print Sharing is installed
(this installs/starts the Server service) but you do not have to
enable it (I disabled by unchecking the box next to File and Print
Sharing after I installed it).
However I tested this and it appears that I cannot access the
Administrator shares on that machine from my machine. I get this
error message:
Windows cannot find the network path. Verify that the network path is
correct and the destination computer is not busy or turned off. If
Windows still cannot find the network path, contact your network
administrator.
Here is some additional info:
-I am not the system administrator, but I added my account to the
Administrators group on the machine where I disabled File and Print
Sharing.
-Both machines are WinXp Pro.
-If I type net share at the machine where I disabled File and Print
Sharing, I can still see the Administrator shares.
-I verified the Server service is running
-If I enable File and Print Sharing, I can access the Administrator
shares. However my client will not accept having File and Print
Sharing enabled.
Thanks in advance,
Joey

- Windows XP >> Search function has stopped searchingI'd been using my Windows XP Professional for about 6
months when it stopped searching. I'll search for a file
I know is on the drive and the answer comes back "Search
is complete. There are no results to display." It
appears the only items it finds are those ON the desktop
and nothing in any other file. I've tried reseting all
of the "controls" without success.
I'm an Elementary School Principal with numerous files
with "teacher" in them, yet NO results.
HELP!
