know there has to be a gob of updates that need to be installed. It is set

Windows XP >> can i delete my prefetch?
mark;
Yes. It will reload whatever it thinks it needs. I have had XP
installed for about a week and I have cleaned out prefetch three times.
Don't delete the folder, just it's contents.
Windows XP monitors the files that are used when the computer starts and
when you start applications. By monitoring these files, Windows XP can
prefetch them. Prefetching data is the process whereby data that is expected
to be requested is read ahead into the cache. Prefetching boot files and
applications decreases the time needed to start Windows XP and start
applications. This information is logged and stored on your hard drive
taking up space and requiring a process to be kept running monitoring which
applications are being run. This has a performance impact on your PC.
Like temporary files it can get too full. Hope this helps.
Let us know,
Wes

Yes, once in a while it will just get too much stuff in
there and just delete it. It will accumulate again. It
is a feature to speed up the loading of programs that you
use often. But after a while too much is in there and
acually will slow you down.

Windows XP >> can i delete my prefetch?
Hi,
The Prefetcher component in Windows XP is part of the Memory Manager, and
helps to shorten the amount of time it takes to start Windows and programs.
Windows XP "monitors" itself and notices which applications are launched
frequently. It gathers information about these applications and what they
access with the launch and stores this information in the prefetch folder.
It then uses this information to "optimize" access to these files so that
they launch faster.
Once every three days, by default, Windows XP will perform a partial
defragmentation and adjust the layout of the disk based upon current use.
The files to be moved are written in the file Layout.ini (found in the
Prefetch directory under the System Root directory).

The Prefetch folder contains records of the load pattern of each
program load made. It records files accessed and their timing. Then
every three days, when the system has an idle period, a rearrangement
of files is made, to bring ones used consecutively together and
optimise layout, so that a set of files that are seen to be needed for
a program to start up can all be accessed in a single sequence (hence
'prefetched'). This speeds up load times .
Things drop out of it after a week of non-use, and there is no real
point in trying to tidy it manually

- Windows XP Support >> Delay opening folders caused by dcom server process launcher serviceHello,
I am seeing a problem where when I try to open My Computer, or click
the Look In dropdown in the run dialog, or anything similar, it takes
a minute or two to get results. I've checked all the obvious stuff
like spyware (none based on MS Antispyware, Spybot and Ad-Aware),
disabled all antivirus and firewall and such (ZoneAlarm for both) and
this is a stand-alone computer with no mapped drives.
I've traced the problem to the "dcom server process launcher"
service... when I set it to disabled and reboot, the problem goes
away. Of course, then I can't use a number of applications I need (MS
Antispyware and ATI's Multimedia Center to name two). When I set it
to Automatic (because it can't be manually started) and reboot, the
problem returns (but at least I can use those apps!).
Can anyone point me in the right direction on this? I've been
Googling for over an hour now and haven't found anything that seems
applicable. Thanks!

- Windows XP >> Explorer tree flickeringHi there,
I am trying to administer my parents' computer running Windows XP
(personally, I am runnign Linux... ;-), which used to to be surprisingly easy
task. Since a couple of months, however, I am experiencing a strange problem:
The explorer's folder tree keeps refreshing itself like every second or so as
long as the control panel/administrative tools entry is visible. This is
kinda annoying since it prevents my parents from selecting and
moving/deleting any files or folders.
Any idea how to deal with this problem? (Knowledge base article no. 816375
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816375/EN-US/) didn't solve the problem --
no surprise, since my parent's computer doesnt't actually have any mapped
network dirves.)
Any help appreciated -- best regards --

Administrator. Even if i rename that folder to something else, i still
get the same error. Is there any way to rename the Admin user name to

- Windows XP Support >> XP keep drops back to 16 colorsMy Problem: XP keep drops back to 16 colors
Hello all, greetings !!
My XP system has a problem. It has a taste for 4-bit, or 16 color
display. No matter which setting I have determined, if I shut down the
computer, and reboot it, XP drops everything back to 16 colors.
My display card is NVIDIA GeForce MX400 based, with 256MB of RAM on it.
It isn't any fancy top-of-the-line card, but it does get the job done.
My computer is a typical Pentium 4, with 2 GB of RAM. Not fancy, but
workable.
The problem is that XP has a liking of 4-bit display.
Everytime I turn on the computer, I have to get on "Control Panel" >
"System" > "Hardware" > "Device Manager" > "Monitors", to delete the
"default monitor".
Then I have to get on the "display property" > "setting" > "advance" >
click on the "adapter" tab, and then click on the "List All Modes"
button to reset the display back to 32-bit (or 16-bit, or whatever
setting other than 4-bit, 16-color setting).
If I do not delete the "default monitor" using the "Device Manager"
method, I can't change the color quality of the display.
I have absolutely no idea why my XP machine loves the 16-bit color
display setting so much. I have a lot of friends having XP machines,
and none of their system have this type of "love affair".
My question to you is this -
Is there a permanent way to make my XP system to stick with whatever
display setting I chose for it ?
I thank you for your help.

- Windows XP >> Internet Explorer problemsI've been getting the following window on various web sites, as well as on my
main desktop screen after checking off IE:
INTERNET EXPLORER HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO CLOSE. WE ARE
SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.
IF YOU WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF SOMETHING THE INFORMATION YOU WERE WORKING ON
MIGHT BE LOST.
PLEASE TELL MICROSOFT ABOUT THIS PROBLEM.
Then it asks if I want to create an error report and gives me two boxes to
choose from "Create Error Report" or "Don't Send".
Since I couldn't figure out what the problem was I contacted my ISP and they
were unsure either, so their suggestion was to download Firefox, which I did
so that at least I didn't have the problem with the error windows. But they
are still there when I try IE, which is version 6. Any help out there?
