- Windows XP >> Ghost in the Machine Greyed out features in DisplayOn right-clicking my desktop and going into Display Properties, on the
Desktop tab, the word Background is greyed out, along with Browse and
Position (Color is still OK). None of the graphics in the Background window
can be selected and the only way I can get a photo on my desktop is to go
into Customise Desktop, in the Web tab and click New and then find the photo
and check the box. (I then have to re-osition it and it ends up with a
pop-down bar at the top.) What has happened to the usual method of
selecting a desktop photo? Why the greyed out features?

- Windows XP >> Message Rules in Outlook ExpressI am trying to use the Message Rules in Outlook Express. Rule A sends all
messages from "NYTimes" to a "News" folder and Rule B sends all messages
containing the word "Nigeria" to a "Junk" folder. Rule A appears before
Rule B in the list of rules and I thought that would ensure that Rule A
would be applied before Rule B. However, it seems that whenever a message
from the NYTimes contains the word "Nigeria", it is sent to the "Junk"
folder. Is there any way to order these message rules?

LiveUpdate. The Symantec folks had me uninstall LiveUpdate because they said
my files were corrupted, but I have been unable to reinstall. They do not
seem to have a clue on how to resolve this error. Please note that I am
logged on with Administrator priviledges.
Install Error: 10
The LiveUpdate install failed because LiveUpdate was not able to register
one of its components. You need to have write access to the registry to
install LiveUpdate.

Windows XP Support >> Problems with start-up
About one in every six to eight times or so, my computer will not boot
completely up after a night off.
It gets to the screen that says (something like) Starting Microsoft Windows,
and then just sits there and cycles without going any further.
I do a hard shut down, restart, go to safe mode, then Restore and that
almost always solves the problem.
I regularly run two different Spy Ware detection programs, an Virus
detection program, and Registry Mechanic.
I have done an analysis of my hard drive using the system tools and that
seems to be good as well.
Any ideas?
If I go to msconfig, what should the settings for the various tabs be? I
notice that on the general tab, I currently have checked 'selective startup"
instead of 'normal startup"
Could this be the problem??

Windows XP Support >> Problems with start-up
Probably giving the 3rd party software that you mentioned the deep-six
would help........Otherwise,you can/could run microsoft BootVis utility that
increases boot time.

- Windows XP >> 3rd Party Install ProblemI am suddenly having a problem installing upgrades to
several 3rd party programs. First was an upgate to the
KDS CD organizer software. I D/L'd the update and
unzipped it but when I went to the directory where it was
unzipped to and clicked on setup.exe I got an error
message telling me that setup.exe could not be found??
I called KDS and they sent me a CD but when I tried to
run it I got an error saying the drive was not ready???
I can explore and see the files on the CD and I tried
both CD drives on my system with the same result. I can
run the CD on my laptop so I know it's not the CD.
I am having the same problem with a D/L'd upgrade to
Seti@Home.
I am running XP Home w/ Norton Internet Security. I have
checked both MS and Symantec knowlege bases and can't
find anything close to this. I even tried reinstalling
XP thinking I may have had a corrupted system file but
that didn't change a thing.

- Windows XP Security >> cannot browse networkneighbourhoodI realize this is a tough question to answer, but a settle for any
hint in the right direction.
We have a (one) W2K server with Active Directory enabled. We have
several XPpro and W2Kpro as clients and one W98 client which acts as
printserver for an old labelprinter.
In order to install the labelprinter drivers the printersoftware
forces us to browse the windows network neighbourhood and point to the
W98 printershare.
On most XPclients ( i haven't checked all clients yet) i cannot browse
the local workgroup (as shown in the windows network neigbourhood)
saying i have not the access rights. I cannot do this when i log in as
a local xp administrator nor as a W2K domain administrator.
I haven't set any special policy rules (local or server) and cannot
fand anything that prevents me access to browse the
networkneigbourhood.
oh yes: i do have access to the pc's and printers in active directory,
and when I type the name of of the W98 pc in the start/run menu the
printershare is shown.

- Windows XP Setup >> How to remove an operating system? For testing one of my other problems, I installed XP Home in a Dual-Boot /
Multi-Boot system. The OS I'd like to keep is a XP Professional. Now I would
like to remove that.
How do i do this, because this doesn't work by just removing the hard disk.
Also, if I want to enter the Repair Console, and I select the os I'd like to
"repair", it asks me for the Administrator password. I never set an
admin-password, for either os's.
Simply pressing enter is perceived as a wrong answer by windows.
It would help me a lot. thanks in advance.

- Windows XP Setup >> Slipstreaming KB912945Does slipstreaming KB912945 cause OOBE failure on an OEM installation?
I have included the newest Internet Explorer update KB912945 in my Microsoft
Windows XP Service Pack 2 Home Edition OEM installation files via
slipstreaming.
The first phase or text mode completed and rebooted. The second phase or gui
mode completed and the PC rebooted again. The computer automatically adjusted
the display resolution and attempted to start the OOBE wizard.
A dialog box appeared claiming a file had been downloaded and that "while
files from the Internet can be useful, some files can potentially harm your
computer. Do you want to open or save this file?"
file name: actshell.htm
type: html document, 87.7KB
from: C:\WINDOWS\system32\oobe
Choosing either option, opening or saving, causes the computer to lock up
forcing a hard reboot of the system. It will then boot to the desktop and all
appears normal, but the User Accounts applet in control panel will not open.
This command, c:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a, when executed from a
run box returns the user to the file downloaded message. Choosing either to
open or save the actshell.htm file, both result in a large white empty dialog
box titled Activate Windows.
For now since there is no way to activate the installation, I will remove
KB912945 from the source files and do the installation again. KB912945 will
have to be installed post setup.
