- Windows XP >> Drop down menuI'm got drop down menu everytime I click on anything. I have XP Pro with
everything.
I can not figure out how to get rid of them. Instead of double clicking on
and icon I get a
drop down menu. Please help.

- Windows XP Security >> Spyware: Need help removing it.I'm getting a message on my desktop stating that I have a Spyware infection.
I did an Norton anti-virus scan, updated Norton Firewall, used Web Defender
to look at all of the programs running on the laptop, installed System
Mechanic, installed ZoneAlarm, and can't do a System Restore.Web Defender did
not find anything, Norton found Trojan malware and got rid of it, ZoneAlarm
did not find anything either.Please offer some help on the next best thing to
do.

- Windows XP >> NetlogonHello,
My vbs computer startup script contains a line of code that requires the
local system account to run an exe located in the netlogon folder of the
domain controller.
For some reason it doesn't work. A snippet of the code is shown below:
WshShell.run (\\domain\netlogon\folder\myexe.exe)
The \\domain should be known during computer startup, is it possible that
this is not the case?
The domain is W2K3. Permissions and script syntax are OK.
Can anyone help?

- Windows XP >> XP SP1a update problemI just installed SP1a for XP professional. After the
reboot, my mouse does not function (USB) nor does my
internet connection (DSL connected via internal NIC). If
I connect a regular mouse to the serial port, it does
work. Any suggestions? I've yet to try uninstalling the
service pack.

- Windows XP Network >> How Do I UNDELETE?My WIFE called me from work and she was on her terminal and deleted some
files, (thinking it was deleting ONLY from her terminal) and when she went to
the Host she found she had deleted from the host (she isn't the sharpest
knife in the drawer, when it comes to computers and refuses to read Windows
for DUMMIES) I told her to go to restore, and when she did, it was OFF and
not monitoring.
The recyle bin was EMPTY and she says the files never went there. SHe has
NOT turned off any of the computers yet. ISN'T there a UNDELETE command that
can be used? how I am not the sharpest knife when it comes to Network. THey
have Windows XP on the host and I believe 98 SE on hers.

- Windows XP Support >> Context Menu ProblemHi All,
I am running XP Pro SP2.
My problem is this: When I go to explorer and right click on a folder in
the right pane, the context menu that comes up has as the first 3 choices:
1.Search (bold print)
2.explore (normal print) and 3. open (normal print)
also when I 2x left click a search window comes up.
How do I make open or explore the default action??

It may be coincidence, but at roughly the same time I was asked to update
Windows Media Player -- on restarting and accessing the program, it asks me
to finish off the installation by logging in as the administrator, when I am!
(Also ran AVG virus scan, Lavasoft ad-aware, Spybot Search and Destory and
CCleaner)

- Windows XP Setup >> ghstwalk, Outlook ExpressHere's a problem that I never dreamed of.
I have several legacy machines that were deployed without sysprep. At
the time there was no benefit to sealing the images. There was no
Active Directory for these machines to join, workgroup connectivity
worked just fine without a unique SID, and if we really wanted to
change the SID for some reason, then we could always run ghstwalk from
Symantec Ghost. I had no problem for years. Most of the images were
replaced every few months so I had no worries about long term problems.
This was the most efficient deployment we found, 'no sysprep' means
less customization. Even regarding product keys, we had a site licence
for an upgrade, so there was no reason to enter unique keys for each
machine.
Sysprep was always on the horizon. None-the-less, I couldn't justify
the extra process and the extra time during customization. Many of
these deployments were done under presure. Certan - heavy use -
clients were being re-imaged on a weekly basis during a short
maintenance opening.
Unfortunately, not all of the machines were temporary. Some machines
went to permanent use and have been like this for a couple of years.
Recently, I wanted to inventory the legacy machines in WSUS.
If you've never had the pleasure of using WSUS to monitor clients with
the same SID, well this is what it looks like to me; the clients appear
as one computer to the WSUS, only the computer name changes several
times daily.
Clearly I had to change the SID on each client to get useful
information in WSUS. I ran a test case with two identical XP test
clients. By using ghstwalk I achieved exactly what I wanted. There
were no obvious problems. I was ready to go 'live'.
Then I designated three of my legacy clients for ghstwalk, one with W2K
and two with XP. The clients were renamed and given new SIDs. All
went well.
Users called me a day later, Outlook Express produced errors. Mail was
eventually accessible but they endured:
"...Server response "Logon failure" unknown user name or bad password",
Port 143; Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800C006F"
OE would no longer save passwords. On the W2K machine the 'Save
Password' check box was greyed out. I tried the prescribed Microsoft
Technet registry fix for Protected Storage System Provider, but it
failed to work.
Please advise. Thanks for taking an interest.

It tells me to run scan to remove, but doesnt find it
when I run the scan, Does anyone know how to find the
system volume info, so i can delete it manually?

- Windows XP >> Disappearing System Tray Icons ?My system tray icons keep disappearing ! I have unchecked "hide
inactive icons" in the taskber properties, and the other day a few of
them reappeared after a reboot, but then failed to appear after
subsequent reboots. The "hide inactive icons" box is still unchecked.
Please help ! Some of my apps wont work if I can't acces the system
tray...

along with some rattling sounds from my PC..
"windows delayed write failed. windows was unable to
save data for the D:\$Mft. the data has been lost.
could be caused by possible failure of computer hardware
or network connection. try to save file elsewhere."
i looked for this file, and can't find it in the path
stated.
i've scanned, defragged and checcked for viruses, windows
updates already and the problem still persists.
I'm at a loss as to how to fix this problem, I've never
run into this before.

- Windows XP Setup >> setup.msi & error 1612I hope I am not bothering the wrong group. But I really need some help. I
am trying to install a 3rd party piece of S/W and each time I receive an that
says: setup.msi returned an error 1612
I have worked with the 3rd party vendor until their clueless.
I have searched the different discussions and implemented what I could find
on this subject including downloading and installing 'Install Clean Up' 'XML
4.0 Parcer' and 'UPH Clean-Up'. Non of these had any effect.
I would appreciate any and all help.

- Windows XP >> XP crashingXP is crashing for about 2 month now and it is getting
worst. Sometime it works for an extended time, than
crashes at every minute.
I have plenty of space in Dell 4300 computer. I use cable
DSL from Comcast, Norton antivirus
Tried: Used System Restore 3 times going back further,
defragmanted, cleaned out cashe twice a day, cleared out
cookees several times, physically disconnected and
reconnected modem.
Noticed that many times page openes with minimize window
(upper right corner, single square) and it crashes more
when it is in minimize setting. It seems to crash less
when setting is on maximize.(double squae)
When crash occurs double square changes to single square.
Whrn tried to write to you it rashed and the following
Error Signature appeared:
ApplName:iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName:
Unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 235bb1b65
Your help will be appreciated.

I emptied out my recycling bin and I would like to system
restore to get those files back. but I can't restore my
system. There is no error message or anything it just
says it is unable to restore. Is there a way to get those
files back? I really need those files. Thanks a million to
those that are helping.

Windows XP >> SYSTEM RESTORE
Not necessarily true!! If you have access to Norton's
Systemworks, you can run utilities from the disc and use
the "Unerase Wizard" to recover deleted files. If not,
do a search for "file recovery" programs. Some may offer
trial versions to try.

- Windows XP >> Advanced Tab Never Came BackI uninstalled the Intel Application Accelerator. I expected to get back the
ability to enable DMA on the Advanced Tab in Properties for my Intel 8280
Ultra ATA Controller. The Advanced Tab is did not return. I checked to
make sure everything is current. The Drivers are version 2.3.0.2160 from
10/1/2002. These are installed as the most current drivers when I do an
update.
Any ideas?

in the bottom of the screen, includes the following title: "Virtual Memory
minimum is too low" and after it:
"Virtual Memory minimum is too low, windows gonna repair (or somthing) the
problem, so some of the apllications will deneid" (it was somthing like that)
"For more information see Help" (I'm sure that was wirtten).
This problam always heppen when I play play that game. At it or after I
played.
this game require very high game requirements, but I'm not sure that this is
the problam, because I can play fine.

- Windows XP Support >> Windows Firewall 'appears' to close on connection to networkI have a wireless network to my PC (XP Pro SP2) and it works fine
But today I brought the PC downstairs and plugged it in with a network cable
to the router (D-Link DSL-G604T) and immediately the Security Centre pops up
with 'Your compter may be at risk' and shows the firewall as OFF so I click
for the Security Centre to enable and it says...
"the security center could not turn on windows firewall" and recommends
trying to turn it on myself through the Control Panel and Windows Firewall
I go to control Panel > Windows Firewall and it shows as ON ??!!
As soon as I unplug the network cable the problem goes away
Other PC on the network (also XP Pro SP2) works fine with cable plugged in

get windows to load.
I was considering buying an external hard drive as it was, but I was
wondering if i could by an external hard drive, install xp(using a
laptop) on the external and boot up my computer that way that so I can
get all my data before re-formatting the internal drives??

version (not an upgrade) of XP-Pro to satisfy standards
set by my employer.
I would now like to transfer my XP home license and OS to

- Windows XP >> Windows boot, fastdetect and COM port questionWe have a system here that will be a call accounting system. It will have
data from a PBX sent to a COM port even when the system is booting up. This
creates a problem under normal circumstances as Windows will try to install a
serial pointing device.
I have /fastdetect in the boot.ini file but the system is still trying to
install pointing devices. I have added the COM1,2,3 etc after fast detect and
still the same problem.
Basically I have done exactly what Microsoft said to do to prevent the
problems I am seeing.
So what is the real solution to this problem?

Little problem i'm running into is the amount of time it takes from the
desktop to when I can dial out.
From boot to desktop is pretty quick, but I have to wait to dial out. My
system almost freezes until my norton firewall appears then I can go.
I have an amd 2400+, 512 mb ram, sympatico hs.
I have the network card set manually.
Running norton systemworks 2003 and personal firewall.
I've shut off quite a few services in msconfig.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Uncertain whether I have REAL Windows, AND TROJAN VIRUS!!!I have an older computer (used), and sheesh the problems I have... Other
than getting a new system how do I take care of four important things?
1. When I go to add/remove programs (to delete rarely used programs
because my system shows only 4% free space!), it does not list all programs
on my computer. Plus, it shows 20 or more Windows updates??? Some of them
take up space, some do not..............
2. Upon start up, I have a NEW WARNING, states that my system is at risk,
that I do not have an original version of windows..........
3. My virus check system (Symanytic Anti-Virus), states that I have the
Trojan virus, and that it has it quarantined, but not removed? WTF?
4. Fianally, my system (HA!), will not run scan disk completely when
prompted. It may run correctly one out of 20 times. PLEASE HELP ME!
