- Windows XP Network >> Problem Networking Laptop & Desktop with XP HomeI am a fairly inexperienced when it comes to PC's and am trying to
network my laptop with my descktop.
The desktop has ADMtek AN983 10/100 PCI Adapter and the laptop has
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Earthnet NIC.
I am running XP Home on both & have run the network wizard & both are
saying that the devices are working properly but both say that the
network cable is unplugged.
I have tried several different cables inclusing a 'crossover' cable
that I got from the place I bouth the laptop at.
I took it to them & they were unable to get the laptop to netwrk with
other PC's & they said it's because I'm running XP Home instead of
Professional.
Is this correct or can I network using XP Home.
I have tried all the stuff on Microsofts XP Networking page, but to be
honest I think it is next to useless.
Any assistance you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP >> Very very annoying taskbar in Windows XP....Hi,
I have a really VERY VERY annoying problem with Windows XP:
In the properties of the taskbar I have set the the "Auto-hide the
taskbar"
and "Keep the taskbar on top of other windows".
I set these properties so that the taskbar pop-ups when I move the
mouse pointer to an edge of the monitor.
A REMARK:
---------
I like to work with the keyboard only, because I'm much quicker with
it and I use the mouse as less as possible.
The Problem:
------------
At the beginning I had a lot of very annoying "baloon" Windows XP
messages and the taskbar ALWAYS pops-up, so the browser or application
application I used
lost the focus and I had to click with the mouse the browser or the
application window to gain the focus again; so I was able to work
again with the keyboard only.
So I found in internet a couple of hints: I added to my registry the
following keys:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"EnableBalloonTips"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"FolderContentsInfoTip"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\tips]
"Show"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"StartButtonBalloonTip"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"ShowInfoTip"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSMBalloonTip"=dword:00000000
So, I didn't get any "baloon" message anymore. These keys "kills" the
Windows XP "baloon" messages from the taskbar.
HOWEVER:
it happens very often that the taskbar pops-up without any message. It
doesn't
display any "baloon" message, but it's still very annoying, because I
loose
the focus of the browser or application..... you read it already
before.
NOW THE QUESTION (PLEASE HELP ME WITH SOME IDEAS ^_^ ):
*********************************************************
What can I do to suppress the annoying pop-up of the taskbar?
I don't want neither to "Lock the taskbar" nor to "Keep the taskbar
UNDER
other windows".
If I need the taskbar, I simply want to move the mouse on an edge of
the monitor so that it pops-up. I don't want that the taskbar pop-up
automatically.
So, if you didn't die after this long monologue (LOL LOL) I would
appreciate some hints.
Thank you very much

- Windows XP >> Product Activation Error MessageHello newsgroup members,
After installing a new program (Napster 2.0) on my
computer, I get this error message upon reboot:
"A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking
the license for this computer" (error 0X 8009006).
The Microsoft Knowledge Base addresses this error # by
saying it is caused by a hardware change and need to
reinstall Windows but I have had no hardware change.
Is there a way I can fix this without reinstalling Windows
XP? Can the XP recovery disk help? It will not boot up in
safe mode either.
Your help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

Windows XP Hardware >> NVidia GeForce 4 Ti 4200
I just got Windows XP Pro, and don't know much about it.
I installed my NVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200 and it took
its "plug and play" settings of 32 bit instead of 128. I
downloaded the driver from the NVidia website and clicked
to install and restarted my computer but it still has the
32 bit settings instead of the options it should have. It
is using the XP Pro's driver instead of the downloaded
driver. What should I do?!
Thank You,
Bryan

I can't be 128 Bit color. It most likely a 128MB card. 32Bit color is as
high as it goes.

Windows XP Hardware >> NVidia GeForce 4 Ti 4200
You would need to install the motherboard chipset drivers. The standard AGP
port drivers in XP are limited and will give you only minimum settings.
Depending on your motherboard, the two most popular chipset drivers are
Intel and VIA. You will need to look up on your motherboard manufacturer's
web site to see which you would need.
Also, if it turns out that your motherboard is based on an Intel chipset,
then you may have this problem with the software Intel Application
Accelerator. This package is used to provide the high speed access to the
hard drive(s). There is a known problem and download the latest version
from Intel's web site.

- Windows XP >> MBSA reports issues/Need help to fixI'm running Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.0 in a WinXP SP2 PC. It
reports the following issues:
SQL Server Scan Results
Instance SONY_MEDIAMGR
Administrative Vulnerabilities
1) Registry Permissions: Internal error (43.7). What was scanned:
"SQL Server Registry Key SecurityCheck Description
This check ensures that the Everyone group is restricted to Read permission
for the following registry keys:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\MSSQLServerIf the Everyone group has more than Read
permission to these keys, it will be flagged in the security scan report as a
high-level vulnerability."
2) SQL Server/MSDE Security Mode:SQL Server and/or MSDE authentication mode
is set to SQL Server and/or MSDE and Windows (Mixed Mode). What was scanned:
"SQL Server Authentication ModeCheck Description
This check determines the authentication mode used on the computer running
Microsoft® SQL Server that is being scanned.
SQL Server provides two modes for securing access to the server: Windows
Authentication Mode and Mixed Mode.
In Windows Authentication Mode, SQL Server relies solely on the Windows®
authentication of the user. Windows users or groups are then granted access
to the computer running SQL Server. In Mixed Mode, users may be authenticated
by Windows or by SQL Server. Users that are authenticated by SQL Server have
their user name and password pairs maintained within the computer running SQL
Server.
Windows Authentication Mode
This security mode allows SQL Server to rely on Windows to authenticate
users in the same way as other applications. Connections made to the server
using this mode are called trusted connections.
When you use Windows Authentication Mode, the database administrator allows
users to access the computer running SQL Server by granting them the right to
log on to SQL Server. Windows security identifiers (SIDs) are used to track
Windows authenticated users. As Windows SIDs are used, the database
administrator can grant access directly to Windows users or groups.
Mixed Mode
In SQL Server, Mixed Mode relies on Windows to authenticate users when the
client and server are capable of using NTLM or Kerberos logon authentication
protocols. If either party is incapable of using a standard Windows logon,
SQL Server requires a user name and password pair, and compares this pair
against those stored in its system tables. Connections that rely on user name
and password pairs are called non-trusted.
Mixed Mode is supplied for two reasons:
Backward compatibility with older versions of SQL Server
Compatibility when SQL Server is installed on Windows 95 and Windows 98
operating systems
(Trusted connections are not supported on computers running Windows 95 or
Windows 98 when they are acting as the server.)"
I DELETED FROM THE REGISTRY ALL INSTANCES OF "SONY" AND ALSO DISABLED ALL
SQL SERVICES, BUT MBSA STILL REPORTS THE SAME ISSUE. THANKS FOR ANY FIX.

- Windows XP Security >> Recover data from secure hard-diskHi,
I recently reformatted my primary HD and reinstalled Windows XP on it.
Before I did this I backed up a lot of my data onto my second HD, which had
securities on it allowing only my old user access to it.
Since running my newly installed OS I've found that I can't get access to
the data. It now makes sense as it sees me a different user.
Anyway, how can I override the Windows XP securities in place on this HD and
access the data on my second hard-disk?

- Windows XP Hardware >> sound problemAbout a month ago, I bought a used computer to replace my dead
computer.
One thing I have not managed to get working properly is the sound. It
came with an LCD monitor that has built-in speakers. They do not
produce any sound at all. I do have my old external speakers, which
work. But they seem to be fairly quiet. Full volume is nowhere near
what it was like on my old computer. I tried to watch a movie trailer,
and at full volume, I could barely hear the audio. It does play music
okay. I can hear it nicely as long as I am sitting at the computer.
When I checked the control panel, it states that the monitor is
working fine, but does not list a particular model. It does not have a
specific driver listed. I went to the website, and under drivers, it
had an inf file. It opened as a notepad file. That doesn't seem to be
a real driver. The computer was put together by the guy I bought it
from, and I have a box with CDs and manuals. It has a little booklet
for the monitor (no mention of the sound or any CD), but I could not
find anything else pertaining to the monitor.
Any suggestions?

- Windows XP Setup >> Internet Explorer HangsUp Under Window XP ProI recently Upgraded to Windows XP Professional from Windows 98 (First
Edition). Most everything went smoothly except for my web access. I use a
fiber optic cable modem and LAN. I've used this for 2+ years under Win98
with no problem. My current problem is that when I log onto the internet
everything works well for about 5 minutes. Then my web browser stops
functioning and I get the dreaded "cannot connect to this..." page.
Interestingly enough I still have internet access because I can ping my ISP
without difficulty. Once I reboot I'm good for another 3 to 5 minutes
before my browser hangs up. All other programs on the computer work fine
and don't hang up. I tried to reinstall Internet Explorer 6.0 from the
Microsoft web site but receive the message: "A newer version is already
installed." Then, the install program terminates.
I think the problem is in the XP program.
What is the experience in running the Windows XP Pro upgrade program again?
I hate to do this but unless I get some good advice I may have to.
All suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
