Windows XP >> New Computer I ordered a new computer w/no OS to replace a PII 300Mhz running XP Pro. I
want to install the version of XP Pro that is on the old computer, on the
new one when it shows up. The old computer will be decommissioned at that
point and either sent ot the scrap heap or I may put Linux on it just to
play. What is the procedure for this? I think I remember something about
having to call MS if the system is already activated and I need to
reactivate it due to hardware changes. Will the number be displayed at
activation?

Has anyone done this? Any issue with MS on this?

Thanks...

Mike...

Windows XP >> New Computer What version of XP Pro is on the PII, a retail upgrade or an
OEM, or a retail full install?

OEM is not to be moved to another computer, retail upgrades
can as long as the license the upgrade was based on allows.
A retail full install can be installed, one computer at a
time, on as many computers as you buy or build. You do have
to remove prior installs.

If it has been 120 days, a new install will activate over
the Internet without problem.

Windows XP >> New Computer Greetings --

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

Windows XP >> New Computer This copy was bought thru a special promo with Microsoft. I got the OS and a
lava lamp for about $60 a few months after XP first came out.

Provided you have a retail copy, not one of the cheaper OEM ones that
may not be transferred, you just install to the new machine. When it
comes to activation, if it is more than 120 days since you last did it
(as seems likely) , you will find it will go through on the net just
like first time. If not, you will have to phone a toll-free number that
will be given, to explain and swap one long number for another to check
back as you type it in
