- Windows XP Network >> Applications can't access internetI'm running XP Pro on an IBM Thinkpad T30 with Linsys wireless netork - cable
modem. I have access to the internet wirelessly and when hardwired. I have
3 apps that cannot 'see' interent connection, iTunes, Turbo Tax and AVG Auto
Updates. I get 'internet connection failed, check settings' errors from all
three. But, laptop is clearly connected. They are all listed as exceptions
for the firewall... I cannot figure out what else to check.. anyone know
what might be the issue?

- Windows XP Network >> Installed new DSL, LAN troubledI just went from cable to DSL and the install really jacked me up.
My LAN doesn't allow file sharing anymore even though its there and I have
some LINUX computer remotely connecting to my comp. every time i go online
and i cant stop the connection. I guess i just want to restore the defaults
for my whole network. I can't find a way to, need help please!

- Windows XP Security >> Access Denied when running MsConfig w/ admin rightsI'm trying to run PC in diagnostic mode on Standalone PC with XPPro-sp2, and
I am getting "An Access denied error occurred while attempting to change a
service. You may need to log on to an Administrator account to make the
specified changes." Now, I've made no changes recently to any programs or
hardware, and I have administrative permissions so I don't understand what is
going on. Safe Mode (all three safe options) fail, or hang at (Agp440.sys
line). Theres no evidence of a viral agents at work or scumware. I had a
similar "legit" problem with msconfig due to a boot volume info folder virus
about a month ago, and I wound up having to reinstall XP SP2 from scratch. Is
there a way to verify, or fix this problem short of having to attempt an "In
place repair" ??
My thinking is that settings in the registry have somehow become corrupted.

- Windows XP Setup >> Windows XP OEM License questionHello all,
I usually don't post to these groups, because I can usually find
the answer I am looking for by doing a group search. I do have a
question, that I was unable to find the answer for in previous posts.
I have 3 computers, 2 Desktops (both built by myself) and a Dell
Laptop. I bought the retail version of Win XP home edition. I also have
the OEM version of XP home edition. My "MAIN" computer I do a lot of
upgrading on, motherboard, CPU etc. and I have the RETAIL version in
that computer. My "Community" computer, I call it that, because anyone
who needs to use a computer is allowed on the community computer, NOT
my MAIN computer, thats for my use only. Anyway, the "community"
computer has the OEM version of XP on it. My Dell laptop of course came
with it's own OEM version of XP. My question is this: If I upgrade the
"Community" computers motherboard, that makes the copy of XP that is on
it invalid (OEM copy) do I have to purchase the OEM version again, or
can I buy an OEM LICENSE, without the actual XP CD. I have seen these
listed for sale at www.pricewatch.com and I just am kind of lost as to
what someone would do with just the license key, unless you are able to
use it with your original OEM CD, after doing a major upgrade to the
computer that the OEM software is installed on. Can anyone enlighten me

- Windows XP Support >> .exe and .lnk files do not workHi all,
used my show desktop icon earlier to minimise all my windows and my
windows media player went full screen and could not do anything to
minimise it.
Not even pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL, ALT+ENTER, ESC, ALT+F
Anyway, switched off PC......
...switched back on, now none of my shortcuts work and I cannot run
any .exe files.
"Windows not can find a program associated with .lnk file extension"
Trying to run a .exe file does work, so cannot run Help and Support,
System Restore, regedit, msconfig, adaware or anything!
any ideas welcome

I have win xp with sp1 on a IBM ThinkPad.
I updated the os with all the updates from the windows update centre.
The strange thing is that windows update doesn't report that I miss the sp2.
Do you know if there is a reason for this?
Do you think I really don't need the sp2?

- Windows XP Support >> Folder view won't stickMy folders in XP default to tile view, no matter how many times I change
them. I've tried changing the view and applying it to all folders, both
with "Remember each folder's settings" checked and unchecked. I've
tried these fixes:

None of this has worked for more than a few hours.

a post). It says you can then pull it up in Roxio and then burn it. How do
you do that? How do you pull it up? I'm having problems with that.

- Windows XP Support >> Program startup triggers different program installationI believe I have a registry problem .... and can use some help.
When I startup certain progams from the menu/destop icon/or by
starting the program itself in the /Program Files/subdirectory/
whatever.exe file I get an installation startup of a totally different
program. If I hit the cancel button on the instillation a few times
the installation stops and the program I want started finally starts
up.
what wierd link occured to do this and how can I fix it???????
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the offended program.
problem persists after reinstall.
I have tried removing from the add/remove pane in control panel the
program that tries to reinstall itself and what happens is it switches
to another program to reinstall. That is to say another program tries
to install itself instead of the one removed.
things work fine once I "blow through" the intstall dialogs and cancel
them all out and the program I want finally starts ...
Any hints as to where I might tweak or look to fix the registry as I'm
assuming that is the problem ...

- Windows XP Hardware >> Phone and modem control panel can not be openedI bought a laptop that came with Win XP Pro already
installed (I think it is installed off of an image?), and
when I go into control panel and double click on "Phone
and Modem Option" icon, I get an error message saying
"Phone And Modem control panel can not be opened.You may
have a problem starting telephony service."
I saw an article on Microsoft Knowledgebase about possibly
replacing two dlls located in System32 directory.

So I replaced two files
cfgmgr32.dll
Setupapi.dll
But that did not solve the problem.
Is microsoft aware of this problem?
I do not know what trigger this to get screwed up, but I

Whenever i i want to run my viruschecking programs they just shutdown after 1 sec.
Also when i try to type the word virus on the internett it shuts down.
My ctrl-alt -delete doesn't work either. So i got a virus. Is it anyone that recognize this is virus and knows how to deal with it please reply.
Ps. is svchost a virus to?
It takes a lot of my cpu memory.

I tried to reinstall windows xp to repair some damaged
files and hit a major roadblock. When the installation is
about 3/4 of the way done it stops and a window pops up
which says, "the file igfxext.exe on Intel Extreme
Graphics Windows 2000/xp Installation Disk is needed."
I rebooted various times and it continues to do this. I
tried to get rid of the installation process but every
time I try to get back to windows, the installation
process keeps on trying to install windows again.
How do I stop this LOOP!!!! Help!!!!!

Hi,
When it prompts for the intel graphic windows cd, insert the cd that you got
with ur mother board. this contains the drivers for the graphic card that is
a part of the mother board. If u insert this cd, then the installation will
complete the repair process.

Windows XP Setup >> problems installing windows.
If you don't feel like putting the cd in, just hit cancel enough times and
the install will go through.
Odds are, if you pop the cd in, you'll have to browse for the file, and if
you find it, you'll have to do the same for the next file, and the next
frile, and the next file, and so on until you are 300 years old. ;-)
I'd just cancel it, and reinstall the drivers later on.

Sysprep to use the Mini-Setup Wizard first-run experience? Do one of the =
following:
* If you're running Sysprep from the command line, add the -mini option.
* If you're not running Sysprep from the command line, make sure you =
select Mini-Setup Wizard from the first-run experience (I can't remember =
the exact name).

Hi all, I=B4m preparing a deployment of Windows XP and I=B4m confronting =
two problems I=B4d like to share hoping someone tells me what to do:
1. After an unattended installation of XP Pro started from the local =
hard drive I put a command in the GuiRunOnce section to launch =
Office2000 instalation using a transform. This used to work fine on =
Win2k but now when the insallation of Office starts, Windows File =
Protection asks for some files from the SP1 CD wich cannot be found.=20
It tries to find them on the CD drive instead of the
c:\i386 folder where the slipstreamed instalation is located and =
obviously fails. I think this might be related to a kind of tag that may =
be put on the install folder to tell the OS that the service pack files =
are there, but I don=B4t remember how to do this.
2. When I try to automate an installation created using sysprep, the =
mini-setup ignores the sysprep.inf and always asks me to accept the =
EULA, introduce the key, etc. I have tried putting sysprep.inf of a =
floppy like I used to do on Win2k and also put it on C:\sysprep, it =
doesn=B4t work either way. I created the sysprep.inf using the setup =
manager included in the XP install CD. Any suggestions will be greatly =
appretiated.

My HP desktop computer (I do not have a laptop) is connected to the Internet
via Bellsouth's ADSL, and receives email messages via Outlook Express.
When I travel (regularly), I generally use a library's Internet connectivity
to access my email messages (@bellsouth.net).
At that time, I can reply to all of my newly displayed messages. Often,
however, I am unable to provide a thorough, immediate (having to wait until
I return home to my computer) reply because previous email correspondence
containing information relevant to the subject is not displayed, and
therefore, not available for me to review.
Is there a way to access all my previous/archived email messages?
Any suggestions?
I would grateful for any and all that would help me overcome this issue.

- Windows XP >> Ways to minimize startup timeI got the impression that my laptop is slower at startup now then when
it was new. It's an HP laptop with a fully updated Windows XP SP2. The
ways I know to minimize the startup time is to remove unnecessary things
from the Startup folder, and under this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
I do that regularly, but it's still quite slow. I'd like to know about
other ways to minimize the startup time.

recognise my tv signal or recorded videos/shows.
I have a HP Pavillion Media Center pc m370n which had previously been
upgraded to MCE2005 with no problems.

- Windows XP Support >> ActiveSync Error SignatureMy PC installed WinXP Pro. The first time I installed the Activesync 4.5 and
it works OK the first couple of days. Today when I try to launch it and it
pop-up an Error message saying:

After I close the pop-up message, ActiveSync also closed down.

return the computer to a point and fix the mess up? The registry mess up is a
different story not a fact yet but a possiblity. So this is why I ask. If it
wont fix a registry than its not woth the risk for me.

not from any of my programs. I hear music, news, radio stations that I
don't know where it comes from. Do I have a virus or something else?
I usually have to restart my computer to make them stop. Please help!

- Windows XP >> Shutting downMy PC has developed a habit of running for a while, sometimes an hour
or so, then switching off instantly. If I press the on button the light
will flash but nothing springs into life.
I have taken off the processor fan and cleaned the matrix also. I've
had the power supply to pieces and spiring cleaned that. One symptom
that may point to something(?) is that if I pull out the power lead and
reconnect after an hour or so the computer will restart. If I leave the
lead in then it won't start at all.
Does this point to a power supply problem? Any advice will be greatly
appreciated.

pc in the c drive it has 2000 prof and d drive XP and i have internet
connection in the D drive... i.e for the XP opearitng system ..Now in
this Os i cant open my commnad box i.e start--> run--> cmd when i enter
this my command bbox blinks and goes off and even in the same the task
manager cannot be opened..Earlier i have installed this google tool bar
and yahoo tool bar but i have removed them now ...but inspite of this i
am unable to open the command propmt box whereas the same can be easily
opened in the 2000 prof o.s please give me quich and best possible
answers...any other queries regarding the same are welcome...

- Windows XP >> XP Home multiple user shutdown problemMy home computer is running Windows XP Home edition. i am the only one with
an administrators account all my kids have limited accounts with passwords.
The problem is how can i access their accounts to shut them down at the end
of the day if they have forgotten to log off without waking them up to get
them to login and shut them down. if i try to shutdown windows i get a
message to say that other users are logged on and data may be lost if you
shutdown or reboot.
