- Windows XP Support >> Installing XP Pro - missing .sys fileI'm having trouble installing an XP Pro upgrade in a Win 2000 Pro machine.
It gets all the way through "Coping Installation Files" and looks like it's
finished, and then suddenly gives me a "File is missing error". Each time,
the file name is different, but always looks like "a7qnw9bo.sys". (this is
the actual file name from last attempt - other attempts have show a similiar
file name, which might be different, but might not). Googling the missing
file name always finds NOTHING.
If I hit "retry", it appears to do nothing and immediately gives me the
alert again.
If I hit "skip", on reboot it tells me the file is missing, the install
can't continue, and I've no choice (and given no other choice) but to reboot
back into Win 2000 again and start over - at which point I get the "file is
missing" error again when copying files.
I've tried two different CD drives, and tried copying the install files
directly to my HD to install from there. Same thing always happens
regardless of what I do. I'm afraid to try a clean install, because if it
fails, I have a non-operating system and am really in trouble.
Any further suggestions to try before I attempt to phone Microsoft support?
It appears I'm totally stuck at this point and need to find a solution as I
now own a $199 XP Pro Install ashtray for my desk, which I can't afford! I
don't smoke, anyway...

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Backup UtilityI backed up "everything on this computer" to my external
hard drive. When I compare disk sizes, The external hard
drive is showing almost 3GB less than my C: drive and
it's not set to compress. Any ideas why it's not an exact
match?
I'd like to see the folders I've backed up (like in
Windows Explorer format) so I can compare the sizes of
individual folders (backed up versus C: drive) but
everytime I try to open the backed up data, The Utility
Wizard shows up. Is there a way to open up my backup
folder without the Wizard opening?

- Windows XP Support >> Audio ProblemAfter I reloaded XP on my new drive the Control Panel said No Audio Device
Installed. Finally found a Driver on the MB cd, which solved the Player
problem. But when I install it the whole system speed slows dramatically.
Unload the Driver and it's back up to full speed. I'm at a loss.

- Windows XP Support >> win xp (hom) SP2 intall probI tried installing SP2 recently but unsuccesfully. The download was
successful but half way through it's automated installation it just froze for
over 30mins.
I cancelled the download and after many restarts managed to get my computer
back to it's original state.
I hope it wasn't due to just me being impatient, but it did not seem to get
past half way.
Can anyone tell me how long it should take and if this halfway point is
normally where the tab bar holds for an age.

- Windows XP Support >> Computer StartupI have a computer that will power on for about 1 second and immediately power
off. I thought that it may have been the power supply so I removed one side
of the case of the case and saw that the light on the motherboard was on so I
know that it is getting power. I reseated all connections and tried to start
up again but it did the same thing. Any suggestions? The computer is running
XP home with 512mb ram.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> making vcdSo the olny format I can save my video to is WMP, and that
won't play on most DVD players. I don't have a dvd burner
but maybe I could make a VCD, but I can't find any
programs that don't cost $40.00. Is there any free
software or a way to do this with WMM?

- Windows XP Network >> Help, please!!!!!!!!This is an interesting problem that I am experiencing. I
have been tasked with shraring a high speed internet
connection between to "previously" separate domains. The
internet connections is currently connected to one of the
domains. However, once I make a connection to the second
domain's hub, internet connectivity become intermitent
and eventually fails.
Both domains are utlizing a separate DNS and each DNS
server is configured to forward to the ISP's DNS. Each
worksation on the domain is configured to the correct
default gateway, however, the internet connectivity is
quite buggy. After internet failure, I can successfully
ping the default gateway however I cannot reach outside
the default gateway.
I think that I've localized the issue to "cheap" linksys
router. If I go to a domain and access the router's HTML
interface I regain connectivity on that domain, but once
a user from the other domain attempts to access the
Internet, the connectivity on the once working domain is
gone. Any ideas on what's causing this issue? Am I
correct by localizing it to the router? Please help.

- Windows XP Hardware >> usb device frustrationHi
I'm sorta new to this but i have been having similar problems with my USB
devices i have tried the fore mentioned remedy to no avail. The symptoms of
my problem are similar but not the same, When ever i connect my ipod or
digital camera instead of being greeted by the little chime and a program
starting all i get is the safely remove icon. Then when i go to " My computer
to try and activate either device, (they appear as removeable disk H and I)
the message " The disk drive in H: or I: is not formatted do you want to
format. Now i tried the format once with the ipod and it was unsuccesfull but
i will not try that with my camera is there are way to many important photo's
to loose. I have tried many times unsuccesfully to reload all of the drivers
for the ipod and camera i have even tried un installing the usb drivers. I am
at wits end and i need to move the files off my camera as my partner is due
to give birth any day now and i need the space.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

- Windows XP Support >> Desktop Preferences NOT workingHelp...When I try to change my desktop preferences, it won't allow me. I am
trying to change my desktop picture, but when I click on a different picture,
it doesn't do anything. I used to have a picture on my desktop, but it is
now just a blank blue screen with my icons. Also, when I try to manually
rearrange my desktop icons, they won't move and snap back into the space they
were in. I used to be able to move my icons anywhere on my screen. Does
anyone have advise on this problem?

- Windows XP >> dvd roarsEach time I start my computer it continues to detect the
dvd drive and it makes a roaring sound. I have to hold in
the button and restart it each time to get it to stop. My
last hp was doing the same thing except it was the cd
rom. I would be fine with stopping the detection all
together in set up if that would solve this problem. Last
time I called for tech support they had me unistall and
reistall drivers and it didn't seem to do the trick. Next
they wanted me to reload the whole system and I do not
want to do that.

- Windows XP Network >> wininet.dll and streaming videoIE crashes whenever I try to play streaming video. I'm
thinking this (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?

problem, but I can't find the .dll anywhere. Does anyone
know where I can find it, or have any other suggestions?

- Windows XP Hardware >> XP Hard drive problemsI have a FAT32 formatted drive that I used to back up some
data on a computer before I reinstalling windows ME. After
reinstalling Windows ME, I upgraded to Windows XP. Now
when I plug this hard drive into the computer, it doesn't
recognize it. I tried to initialize the drive, but it
isn't even on the list in disk manager. Once, I went
through the motions in the Add Hardware Wizard, and it
detected the device, and installed the correct driver, but
then said there was an error and must have uninstalled it,
because it doesn't show up anywhere. How can I get this
drive hooked up?
The drives on my computer (and their settings) are:
7GB quantumfireball hard drive, set as Primary, Master (or
single?), plugged on the end of the cord,
Memorex 52MAXX CD-RW drive, Secondary, master, end of
cord, and
(The problem drive) Caviar 23200 Western digital Hard
drive, Secondary, Slave, middle of cord.
Western Digital said it sounded like a software problem.

- Windows XP >> Always mute sound on bootupHow do I always mute sound on bootup?
I use my WinXP laptop at meetings and the sound on bootup can be very
annoying. And since it is during the bootup the volume control does not
work at that point.
I know I can mute sound and then the next time the computer boots it
will be muted. But the problem is if I unmute the sound, say to play a
video, and then forget to mute it again before I shutdown. The next
time it boots I get the bootup music again and it is loud.
If there are 30 people in a meeting or class with laptops there will
frequently be at least one who's computer plays that sound on bootup!!
So: What setting or registry change will automaticly set the sound to
mute on bootup EVERY time?
Thanks

- Windows XP Security >> Unable to access files on XP Home PC from other computersI have a wireless network with a PC running XP Home and two other laptops,
one running XP professional and the other Windows 2000. The PC can access and
write files to the laptops and the laptops can both access and write files to
each other.
However when I try to access files on the PC from either of the laptops I
get a message saying "access is denied".
I have setup various user accounts on both laptops and the PC and always get
the same problem.

- Windows XP >> Windows XP Professional - Installation Question.Hi guys. Sorry to bother you with what will most likely turn out to be a
simple question.
Right now, I have Windows XP Home edition my laptop (how it came when
ordered). For one of my classes this semester, I will need to have XP
professional on there. I was able to order XP professional from my college
for a very good price.
It is NOT the upgrade version of XP pro. It is the full version. The upgrade
version was not availbable to be purchased from the college.
Is there any installation option (or method of installation) available that
won't wipe out my file system? I'd like to not have to reinstall the program
I already have on there.
Thanks guys.
