- Windows XP Hardware >> USB card reader problemAll of my USB devices are working just fine. When I plug
in my USB card reader, my WindowsXP SP1 detects the name
properly, then error message pops up saying there "was an
error installing this device, the service for this device
is not identified properly." Then it loops it once more
time, as if to detect the card a second time, and the
error message pops up again (this is in the automatic new
hardware setup that XP launches everytime you plug in PNP
device.)
I checked dev. mgr, and sure enough there are two of the
same card reader. There are also two new removable drives
in My Computer. Suprisingly, when I plug in a card for it
to read, the data is read/write just fine.
Please excuse the long message, I just wanted to be as
precise as I can. I was wondering why it won't correctly
detect the card reader. I've also tried buying a
different card reader and it does the same thing. TIA for
any help.

- Windows XP Support >> Need a Key CodeI was wondering how I go about purchasing a key code? I have a copy of XP and
want to install it on a non profits (Churches) computer but need to purchase
a key code so I can do it legally. Can someone give me explicit instructions
on how to do this and how much it will cost?
Thank you.

- Windows XP Support >> Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer jumping all over the place...Hello, I really hope one of you can help...
My desktop PC has suddenly developed a niggling little problem that
means it is all but useless now. When opening most programs, IE,
Windows Explorer and Opera the screen gets caught in a juddering motion
that seems to act like the software is switching between Restore, Full
Screen and Maximize functions, at the rate of about 6 switches a
second. As you can probably imagine, this means the computer is more
or less useless, and it's getting very frustrating. I've called the
shop where we bought it, and got the usual "It's not our problem, try
system restore, or restore factory settings". Tried system restore
about 3 days ago, and no matter where I try to restore to it's having
none of it, and then I got stop in a lovely "Packard Bell recovery
program (which includes the system restore program)" loop, that stops
actually being able to boot into Windows as it goes on a restarting
loop, again, and again and again, until all of a sudden it'll boot.
For this reason, System Restore is now switched off so I can continue
getting into Windows. Programs not affected are Media Player,
Photoshop, Outlook and RealPlayer plus others.
I assume this is a software issue, but I would really like to be able
to sort this without having to wipe the whole computer.... Please can
anybody help!?
It's a Packard Bell desktop with XP.

- Windows XP >> Windows drag too slow and leave trailsI was having erratic operation and error messages at
various times when using XP Home, so I decided to reload
a fresh copy, after formatting the C: partition.
Everything seems to be OK now except there is an annoying
problem when I drag any window.
When dragging a window the window does not stay up with
the pointer, it lags behind and leaves shadows than
catches up when I stop the pointer where I want the
window. It's acting like a pointer would act if pointer
trails were turned on to the max. I reloaded windows
twice and same thing. A fix would be greatly
appreciated, if anyone knows.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> My IE Shuts Down w/ no WarningHello,
When I do things such as go to websites like
www.fandango.com or run virtual tours on www.realtor.com
my IE (ver 6.x) crashes. No error message, it just
closes down. Does anyone know of some download I can get
to correct this problem? I use WinXP Pro. So it seems
IE is when running websites having some sort of
embedded video routine. Am I missing some sort of
decoder? I have never had this problem
until maybe 6 months ago. I otherwise have no problem
running video files on, for example, Media Player.
Thank you

- Windows XP Network >> Network problems after window update KB832483I have 2 home computers and a laptop all networked with a
hub and cat5 cables. The main computer which connects
directly to the internet is running XPhome, as is the
laptop, the other PC is running XP Professional. I have
had no network problems for months until I recently
installed SP1 from the Microsoft site. After
installation tbe internet connection could not be shared
and files on the computers could not be shared. I
uninstalled SP1 and the problem was resolved. I
immediately got an Automatic Windows Update notification
for KB832483 (Security Update for Microsoft Data Access
Components). Being wary, I created a restor point before
installing the update the next day. Once again, the
internet connection cannot be shared and only files
between the 2nd PC which doesn't connect directly to the
internet and the laptop can be shared. I tried system
restore but it won't let me restore to any point before
the update was installed. Can anyone offer anything to
try?

- Windows XP >> User accounts files on old hard drive.I received any error when staring windows that my hard drive was corrupt. I
tried to boot under safe mode all the system files and drivers showed up on
the screen then nothing the computer shut down. When I tried again I
received a smart failure and press f1 to continue. Still I was unable to
boot up using safe mode.
So, I purchased a new hard drive and reinstalled windows XP. I also
purchased a USB hard drive holder. I am able to access all the files on the
hard drive using windows explorer but the ones which was under a user
account. All the shared files are available. Not any files saved to the
desktop or in the My Documents of that user account.
Does anyone know how to gain access to those files. I tryed resetting the
attrib to all files on the old hard drive it did not work.

- Windows XP Support >> Extra Hard DrivesHello-
I have 2 Extra Hard drives on my computer. They were set-up and installed by
someone else who I can not longer contact.
They were working just fine untill I goofed-up the BIOS or something else,
I'm really not sure where.
The 2 extra hard drives show up in my BIOS but Windows doesn't "See" them.
It's like windows doesn't even know that they are there.
Does anyone know what I might have done? Is there someway to make windows
find them?
My system drive is a Sata drive that works just fine. My 2 extra drives are
pluged into a card in my mother board.
Like I said they were working just fine until I did something in my BIOS. I
may have made the problem worst by goofing around with my "System
Configuration" trying to get windows to "SEE" them.
Help Please.......

- Windows XP >> Windows Task ManagerWhile working on an XP machine, one of the programs
locked up. I did an ALT-CTRL-DEL to shut down the
offending program. I hit Task List, where normally the
Windows Task Manager comes up. Instead of the Windows
Task Manager, it went straight to the Performance tab
(where you see the CPU usage, etc.), only it was "stand-
alone". You couldn't get to any other part of the
Windows Task Manager. Couldn't shut down the offending
program in any way. So then, we rebooted, hoping that
would clear out any strange thing going on, but the same
thing happened when hitting ALT-CTRL-DEL; task List
again. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening
and how to fix it? Thanks for your help.

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Explorer text box oddity
First off, my system:
Xp Home edition with SP1 upgraded from ME
1Ghz Pentium with 512MB RAM
Lots of internal drive space left
Explorer 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633
Macafee Firewall
The problem: Whenever I use Explorer 6.0 and type text
into a web page text box (ex.: ebay's login page or on a
bulletin board text entry box), the text echo lags behind
what's being typed unless a) I stop typing and wait for
it to catch up, or b) I move the cursor arrow into the
address bar but do NOT click on the bar. Doing option "b"
is the quicker of the two and immediately updates the
displayed text but further typing still shows a distinct
lag.
I have an ADSL internet connection and the Macafee
Firewall is turned off. All Explorer "Internet Options"
are set to the default values. This problem did not occur
until AFTER I installed the XP Home upgrade for WinME.
Anyone care to venture a guess?
Thanks for your ideas!

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Explorer text box oddity
My vast experience with u/g'ing from ME to XP is that it
does not work very well, and causes many problems. Your
best bet is probably to wipe your HD (fdisk, format) and
start with a clean XP install. Good luck!

- Windows XP Setup >> System will not format hard driveI know that there has been a lot of recent posts on this, but none of the instructions seem to be working.
I am trying to reformat my hard drive and re-install XP Pro. I have my bios set up to boot from my CD. I select the Windows XP Professional Setup option.
If I select R for Repair, the system finds my existing system partition (NTFS) and gives me a warning message that an existing operating system is in the partition.
I try to Delete the partition, and I receive a message that I cannot delete it because there are system files necessary.
I tried installing over the existing partition, and thought I was sucessful. However, when I viewed the properties of my C: drive, all of the "old" files were still in evidence. I have an 80 gig hard drive and the drive showed 43 gig used. Right where I started from.
I have gone to the C: prompt and typed FORMAT C: \FS:ntfs several times. The prompt immediately appears and all the files are still in place. I have typed this command from the C:\windows prompt also.
Can someone please explain to me (in very simple non-technical English) why this is not working or what I need to do it? I have read every post regarding formating, viewed the FAQs and the links to no avail.
Thank you very much in advance for your assistance.

- Windows XP >> mouse copy/pastexp, having folder with 150 text files, displayed in win explorer right pane.
wanting to copy them all.
select first, shift-rightclick last to select whole range. but when
right-clicking on selection to make pop-up for copy, nothing happens.
the same time, pressing ctrl-a, ctrl-c on [same as above] selected right
pane, and later ctrl-v on destination folder make copy/past.
is my win xp config wrong since i may not have right click pop-up on
selected 150 files, while on ther same time keyboard shortcuts work as
expected? gui copy of small number of files still works with mouse as
expected.
does it mean that keyboard shortcuts are more powerfull than gui mouse
copy/paste?
[not to say that copying from cmd prompt "copy *.txt newfolder" also work
for unlimited number of files]
any comment?

- Windows XP Support >> Windows delayed write failed messageHello
I have a 1 year old machine with new disks. I bootup Windows on a C: drive
and I hold my data on a 400GB SATA hard drive - E: drive.
Sometimes when I boot my PC it is really slow and I get these messages:
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file E:\$Mft. The data has
been lost. The error may be caused by a failure in your computer hardware
or network connection. Please try to save the file elsewhere.
When this happened this morning I could see my E: drive in explorer but
could not copy files to another drive. I rebooted and all was OK!
This is a brand new hard drive. Is my hard drive really faulty?

- Windows XP Support >> Switch User suddenly asks for passwordXP Pro SP2.
I've got two users installed on this machine, neither has a password.
I've been able to switch users with no problem 'til now.
I just installed a new version of Symantec Protection Agent 5.1 (a
firewall that my employer provides and requires that I use if I'm going
to log into the corporate network from home) and now when I switch
users, I'm asked for a password.
If I log off and then log on with the other user, it works.
In fact, it looks like if I log off with one user, log on with the
other, log off, then log back on with the first, switch user will work
without prompting for a password.
When I re-boot, the behavior starts over again.
What might have been changed during this installation?

- Windows XP >> Pictures sent from XP machine are very dark on other machinesI am running a Dell Dimension 3000 with XP Pro 2002 SP2. Software used is MS
Word 2000 9.0.6926 SP-3, Acrobat 5.0.5 10/26/2001, MS Outlook 2000 SP3
(9.0.0.6627). I have taken several pictures that appear fine in all
applications on my XP machine and have inserted them into a Word document and
turned that Word document into a PDF. I then e-mail the document to 3
different Windows 2000 Pro machines (internally within our organization). In
both the word document and the PDF on all machines, the pictures are
extremely dark. I tried simply attaching the original pictures and e-mailing
them (outside of Word and Adobe) and get the same results. Next I e-mailed
the pictures as attachments to an outside organization where they viewed them
on an XP Pro machine, Windows 2000 Pro machine and Win 98 machine. In all 3
cases, the pictures seemed to be OK.
Anyone have any idea what is going on? Any help would be appreciated. Thank
you.
