- Windows XP Support >> XP Home and 2GB RAMHello,
I have a client that has been having problems with her machine for many
years now. She finally brought the computer to my shop and I diagnosed the
problem to a faulty bios on the motherboard. I updated this and her
computer was working very well. She decided to upgrade the computer some to
get rid of the MB that she no longer trusted. and I purchased an ASUS
p4s800d-x Socket 478 P4 MB for her along with two new sticks of Kingston
512MB DDR400 RAM. I installed everything and all seemed well except for
some timing issues between the new Kington RAM and the generic DDR400 RAM
she had before. This was fixed with a BIOS tweek for RAM timing on the
ASUS.
The years of trouble she had included hard locks and reboots on an almost
daily basis. After installing the new equipment she began to have reboots
when she left her computer on over night and running a virus check. This
would happen about once a week. It never locked or rebooted while she was
using the system.
I figured that the memory timing may have been the culprit for these new
errors and when we pulled her generic RAM the reboots stopped, but having
only 1GB of RAM and dealing with Photoshop she complained about the system
being slow.
I purchased some new matching Kingston RAM and installed this on ASUS. No
timing issues the board ran smooth and very fast.
She called and said that the computer had rebooted and she was now having a
blue screen error about Windows missing the user file. She had this happen
once before and that was fixed with a repair install of XP. Hopefully a
repair install will fix it again, but my questions are these:
Has anyone seen this issue before or dealt with this motherboard?
Is there a known issue with XP Home and 2GB of RAM?
Thank you,
Jon

- Windows XP >> Read-only won't remove from folder.Hi All,
I have to remove the "Read-only" option from a folder.
When I right-click on the folder and then remove the read-

return to Read-only.
Is there a setting in XP that tells to always put read-

Anyone can help? Thank you very much!

- Windows XP Security >> Group Policy ProblemRecently I let a close friend look after my house which included my computer
system. I set up enough rights for this person to install games but not to
change any files or settings that could, i thought, drastically modify my
system. I came back and found after deleting his tempory user account that my
group policy settings are missing, could this be a registry hack on my
friends account? or can this change be done remotley?
I would appreciate any help on this matter as I would like to restore some
kind of security/policy on my system.
On loading the GPedit.msc I go to security settings for my system and am
greeted with a dlg box quoting
"The group policy security settings that apply to this machine could not be
determined. The error returned when trying to retrieve these settings from
the local security policy database
(%windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb)was: The parameter is incorrect"
The file is in the above said folder and am clueless at what action to take
as re installing XP is a painstaking option.
Thanks in advance.

http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=242
Over at CNET News, the bold headline reads: No more Windows XP as of 2008.
And the opening line continues the theme: "Starting next year you won't be
able to buy a new PC loaded with Windows XP." A PC World story echoed that
report, noting Microsoft's plans to "discontinue shipments of Windows XP to
OEMs on January 31, 2008." The PC World reporter went out to the web to find
anonymous comments on message boards (apparently this is now a staple of
online journalism) and found this doozy: "[T]ime for enterprises to stock up
on shrink-wrapped copies of XP Pro."

- Windows XP Hardware >> Re: Installed Pioneer DVD R Rw, lost my DVD RomThanks Cari
You are probably correct, Do you know how I can seperate them? I have them linked on the same IDE ( ithinks that's what it is) cable as there is only one slot on the motherboard, the end of the cable is in the DVD Rom and then a second connector is in the DVD R Rw, then a smaller cable goes from the DVD Rom to the motherboard, I think for the sound. should there be another cable from the DVD RW do you think? The power connectors are on the same leads also
on boot up there is only one of them showing as the master and there is no slave
your help is much appreciated
cheers

Well, in the meanwhile I found some additional discussion threads and
was able to individually download and install 2 of the 3 updates.
However, the Windows Installer v.3.1 is not one of them. I have tried
booting in Safe Mode, as well, as when I first tried when booted
normally, I received a message that said Access denied (I am in
administrator mode and have administrator privileges). I received the
same message in Safe Mode.
The number is KB893803v2
Any suggestions?

- Windows XP >> Mouse Icon ProblemHello Everybody,
First, I checked out the archives but could find nothing on this particular
problem; thus, I would be grateful for any help on the following problem:
I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop. I reinstalled a Kensington Wireless
Mouse with accompanying USB receiver. When I moved the receiver to another
port, the mouse icon (please excuse the lack of specific terminology) then
added the following icons < <> > (which are solid black). I have a pencil in
hand icon. Directly underneath it is this black triangle pointing right, a
black diamond, and then a black triangle pointing right. I uninstalled the
kensington drivers and the problem still remains when using the Synaptic
labtop mouse or the Toshiba wired notebook mouse. I 've gone to the Control
panel, mouse pointer tab and even the Device Manager. The mouse works fine
as far as movement, but I can't figure out how to get rid of the additional
icon that moves with the hand. Does anyone know what I might have done
wrong/accidently and how I can correct it. Bonus question: What purpose
does this attached icon serves? Again, thank you for any help you might have
