- Windows XP >> Multiple Monitors Problem!!Hi!
I am using a VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP display adaptor. Plugged into it, I have
an adaptor which allows me to connect 2 monitors to the one port of the card.
On both monitors, it shows exactly the same thing. However, when I go to
control panel to expand the desktop, it shows that only one monitor is
connected, and therefore I can not expand my desktop or anything on to my
second monitor. It just shows exactly the same thing!!
Can anyone please help me? I need to know how to expand my desktop onto the
second monitor.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP >> add remove programs has large blank areasi have windows xp professional and when i go to control
panel to add/remove programs i see only a few programs.
when i scroll down to the very bottom i find the rest of
the programs installed on my pc. there is one small
group of programs in the middle and more blank spaces.
does anyone know how to get rid of this so i can see all
of the programs installed all together. my computer is
working just fine. it is just very annoying when you
want to remove or change a program.

- Windows XP Security >> What is EQXS.exe file for?When I open any *.pdf file - immediately some program -
EXQS.exe -starts to work in the background. Forunately I
have installed my firewall - and I always block the it's
access to the internet. But that program then is still
among my startup programs - so I have got to delete it
each time I launched some *.pdf file. It seems to me that
it is some kind of virus or a Trojan "horse".. How can I
get rid of it?

- Windows XP >> Windows installer appears to failHi.
I'm running Windows Installer 3.1. Just recently, after using Windows
Update, I get the Windows Installer pop-up that says "Preparing to
install..." which stays for a few seconds, then just goes away without
completing. It doesn't say what it's trying to install. Naturally, while
it's there, almost all activity on my computer stops. I've checked the
Windows Update history, and it shows all updates installed successfully. This
seems to happen almost every time I go to launch an application. Is there a
way to find out what's trying to install, and either install it or cancel it?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Network SharingIs there any way you can just press a button, and
everythign will be shared over a network? I have just
installed a wireless network, which is now all connected
up, however, there is no contact between the two
machines. I can't even ping my other machine. No machine
will show on the other's network places. What do you
suggest?

- Windows XP Network >> stop autodial over networkI have a shared internet connection with 2 clients
sharing it from the host. Problem is the connection tries
to dialup about one every 5 minutes if i miss it i might
have a large phone bill. Ideally i would like it to only
dial up when i tell it to connect and not even when a
client opens internet explorer or outlook. Any help would
be greatly appreciated. P.S i have disabled a service
which is meant to stop this problem but it hasnt i think
it was remote connection manager or something like that.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Firewall and Group Policy HELP!!?Hello! I need help please. I'm trying to turn the firewall on, and it says
"For your security, some settings are controlled by Group Policy". I'm the
only user on my computer, and so I'm the "administrator" of my computer.
It's on a home network with a Linksys router and another computer. The other
computer's Firewall is Turned on. I need to disable all "Group Policy"
settings so I can turn the Firewall back on. Can someone help with this?
I've looked and looked and can't find it anywhere. Thank you VERY much for
your time in your response!!!!!!

- Windows XP Hardware >> adding hard drives to controller card in XPEvery time I try to add a hard drive in my multiboot
system, Windows XP goes nuts although 98 boots fine. I
have a Promise ATA card with one drive c: containing
windows 98 and numerous other partitions. The MB IDE has
a second hard drive D: which has the XP OS on one
partition. When i need to work on a third drive, no
matter where I put it, XP refuses to boot. I always need
to choose 98 which is inconvenient. Is there any easy way
around this without hand editing a bunch of substitute
boot files on the c: drive?

First, while I'm not a 'puter "genius" I most definitely am "geekified"
enough to call myself an expert 'puter user:
Anyhowz...
I have two drives, my C drive, and a D drive, both multiply partioned using
Acronis, almost never have problems with it, but...
My usual routine with maintenance is to use SpeedeFrag when I shut down XP
(sp2 btw)...it basically reboots the system to just the shell with minimum
drivers and uses the MS defrag appi...the newer version run scandisk on all
disks prior to doing so.
Now, this has happened before...
Windows reboots, runs scandisk, then starts to boot XP, then instead of
defrag opening up, I get only the desktop, and my "My Documents" folder opens
up on the desktop.
After this usually only sys restore will get me back into Windows "proper."
What I thought was maybe there was a disk error that scandisk couldn't find
(its known for that) so I'll run it again, BUT if I do I get the desktop/My
Documents foler "thingie" again.
Also, after this, when trying to run defrag.exe from within windows (via the
GUI) the system bogs down almost to crash.
Any ideas?
I know its not the "fault" of SpeeDfrag, because basically ALL its doing is
invoking scandisk with the switches active, then rebooting and using the MS
defrag.exe from within the bare minimum shell...

Is there a menu speed adjustment in win xp? Like when you
are say selecting start programs whatever? I thought I
adjusted my computer with win 98 but I went and looked at
my daughters computer win 98 and can't find it on there
either. Maybe it was just my imagination. Thanks.

Yes there is. You can either download TweakUi for XP or go to MVP
Kelly's web site:

Click on "A to Z", click on "M". Scroll on down to "menu speed".

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe
Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP
Slider on the Mouse page. BTW While there I suggest setting the 'Drag
Sensitivity' up to say 20. Then you have to make some deliberate
movement before it thinks you are dragging a file, and you are much less
likely to make accidental copies by your hand jiggling

- Windows XP >> Privilege Problems or other?I have XP Home SP2 edition on both my desk top and lap top and am running
with the same privileges. Today I tried to add a second monitor. No problem
on the desk top, but the lap top does not work. I get all the tabs, Themes,
Desktop, Screen Saver, Appearance, and Settings on the desk top. On the lap
top I only get Display. Can anyone help me?

- Windows XP >> My system is crashing ever 5 minutes LITERALLY!When i boot my computer up, it crashes after 5 minutes.
The error i'm getting is:
System Shutdown
Must shutdown because Remote Procedure Call (RPC) was
terminated unexpectedly.
Something like that.
Anyone know what I can do to solve this problem other than
reformatting?

- Windows XP >> Trying to copy XP to bigger Hard DriveHave been unsuccesful the last two days trying to copy my 20 GB XP system to
a brand new 80GB HD. I have used the Mfg disk (Maxtor) to format and copy
to new disk. Format was OK, showed 81GB. Did the file copy but system does
not boot. NTLDR is missing error which prompts you to insert OS disk and
install. I want to avoid a new install and just copy existing system. I
then tried Disk Image 7.0, did the copy, same error NTLDR is missing. Disk
Image has a copy MBR selection which I did, same result. Back in the DOS
days you could format C: /s or do a Sys C: but I thought I should be able to
get past this. What am I missing here??? Tx Mike

- Windows XP Hardware >> All my cards aren't workingI just got finished w/ a technical support guy who told me
to take all of my various cards out of their slots (video,
sound, network, etc.) and then I had to put them back in.
I'm not sure if they were supposed to go back in in the
same order, but my sound and network cards won't work
now. Can someone tell me if they had to go back in in the
same order that they came out? Thanks a million

- Windows XP >> Uninstall Brightmail plugin silently with msiexec doesnt work?I've tried using this format to remove this program..
msiexec /x "{GUID HERE}" /quiet
This doesnt work..
If you take off the /quiet.. it pops up asking if you want to
uninstall the plugin..
If you put the /quiet on.. it will briefly show that pop up window
then disappear, but the app isnt uninstalled...
I really need a way to remove this app from multiple computers (using
sms 2003) with this command line, so users aren't prompted or see
anything related to it...
Any thoughts out there?

- Windows XP >> Some Applications start MinimizedFor some unknown reason several applications have begun to start running
minimized which can not be maximized no mater what I do. Others are now
opening fully maximized and will not be resized and if I try they go right
to the tray. I am using two monitors which I like use to each for different
applications. Many of my apps work fine as they always have and only some
are behaving as described.
I located this fix http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_tips512.html but it
does not give accurate information about what to do. The article indicated
this START /MAX notepad.exe as an example but an error report is shown.
I don't even understand this if it is the fix I am looking for
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/178117 If this is what I need to do then it
seems it is a bit over my head but will give it a try unless there is
someone that knows of an easier solution.

I purchased a Packard Bell "imedia" PC from PC World UK in about 2002. AMD
1.3Ghz. 20Gb C: drive with Windows XP home edition (OEM I assume) (SP2) and
a 40Gb D: drive added by myself a couple of years ago.
Ok, the C: drive starts reporting bad sectors and is on the way out. So I
purchased a replacement hard drive (Same manufacturer WD) 80 Gb. Then comes
the problem of transferring the OS to the new drive.
I don't have the original OEM XP disks (thanks PC world).
The new drive was installed (as a slave on IDE 2), formatted and partitioned
(NTFS) and set as drive E:
I first tried using NTBackup to backup the C drive (to the D drive), then
restoring this to E: However, NT Backup did not seem to backup and restore
every file (It missed several in the Windows\System32\Config folder). But
some hacking about with the recovery console (from an XP Home CD, not OEM) I
got these transferred across.
When I swap cables and jumpers to replace the C: drive with the E: drive, I
can get XP to display the boot.ini menu, and it will start loading the OS
Kernel, HAL and boot services. But it gets to MUP.SYS and just halts.
Having read some chat on similar problems, it seems that I shouldn't blame
MUP.SYS, it might be the next thing that loads. Trouble is, even with the
/sos switch, nothing else is displayed. Have tried safe mode etc.
I don't know if this is because the new drive/partition is labelled as E: ?
Anybody got any suggestions short of reinstalling XP and all the Apps? I
could obtain an OEM disk if absolutely necessary, but I feel frustrated that
something as common as replacing a failing system disk should prove so
painful.
Before anyone suggests using a drive image application, the C: drive seems
to have a 2Mb "unknown" partition at the start - preventing any simple
partition copy from working. I assume this is part of some
PCWorld/OEM/Microsoft anti piracy thing. Which I'm all in favour of, until
it stops me legitimately rescuing my failing system

every time i boot up. i have to reclick the "place icon
in system tray" for either one of them and both of htem
then show up. How do i fix this problem?
beyond that, microsoft outlook takes forever to boot up.
i don't have many messages on it, but it still takes a
long time. i defragged my hard drive, thinking that
perhaps files got fragmented. what do it do? this
problem just started happening.

menus works, though things seem to just pause. I can open
programs, but they will not function for about 10-20
seconds, at which point the startup sound will play and I
can use my computer normally. What could cause this? How

- Windows XP >> Reading DriveSpace compressed drives in Windows XPI have the following problem:
I have an old hard disk which was used with Windows 98. I managed to get the
raw data from it. But... the drive was compressed with DriveSpace3 and so I
now only have a huge drvspace.000 file and can't get the data out of it as I
do not have a Windows 98 installation any more.
Does anyone know a program or another way to get the data?
(I'm using Windows XP Professional now.)
