- Windows XP Support >> Win XP, NAT, DSL and File SharingYup, this is a common question raised, but this one is slightly different as I
hope someone out there can just read through what I write and confirm or correct
my understanding. Also, any names of systems, workgroups, user accounts, etc are
used for generic reasons so others can learn too, and the set-up does not use
any default names for security (eg, not on the Workgroup workgroup).
---
Right, I have two machines, A and B. A is a desktop machine, B is a laptop. Both
run Window XP Home SP2 with all the updates fully installed and working great. A
(desktop) is connected to a router by wire (ethernet cable). B (laptop) is
connected via a wireless connection to the router, set up with passwords,
encryption and MAC filtering (to keep the unwanted connections out). The router
is a DSL/cable router with built in hardware firewall and NAT (network address
translation). It connects to the internet.
Now, I wish to allow B to see the entire hard disks of A using File and Printer
Sharing. On looking into this, it is a bad idea when connected direct to the
Internet. However, I have found a Scope button in the Exceptions tab of the
Windows XP firewall, which I can limit only to the local IP addresses only
(which are not likely to change).
So.......
Can I do the following safely with no trouble outside?
1. Enable File and Print Sharing.
2. Change the scope settings to only allow it to be open for my known computers
on my local network.
3. Using this, share the root of all harddrives.
Any help would be appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> Transferring Windows XP to new computerI will be upgrading my computer at home and want to use my current hard drive
with Windows XP Pro (OEM version) in the new one.
I have searched the newsgroup and it appears that because it is an OEM
version I may not be able to change computers.
Does this mean I have to buy another version of Windows XP?
Can I install the OEM version to the new computer's hard drive and then
transfer the rest of the hard drive? What would happen when I had to register
it again?
Help.
Thank you.

- Windows XP Support >> My sound scratch.Sorry, if I have some bad English :p
Well, when I'm playing a song, or my computer makes a noice, the sounds make
some funny things.
"I'm clo-o-osing the-e go-oo-d da-am-n doo-or"
When I have a fast internet connection, then there's nothing, but like now,
when I'm having a slow connection or none, then it's very bad.
And I have just formated my computer. It didn't help.
What can I do?

- Windows XP Setup >> missing Operating SystemAfter installing a new hard drive on an older computer -
this computer I have already run WindowsXP professional.
It will not boot from the hard drive or the cdRom from a
cd purchased from the book store of a university which I
am a student. It keeps giving me the error -"Missing
Operating System"
I am running out of ideas to fix this problem..

- Windows XP Setup >> XP Upgrade Language ProblemI am trying to upgrade from an English version of Windows
98 2nd Edition to an English version of Windows XP home
but am receiving the "language of this installation
differs from the one you are installing" message when
attempting installtion. Can anyone tell me which files or
setting determines the language of Windows 98. The PC is a
Packard Bell Pentium 3 in Australia if this helps.

- Windows XP Network >> Win98 PC cannot access XP pro shares on domainMy domain consists of a mixture of Win XP, 2000 and legacy
Win 98 pcs. Most seem to be able to connect to shared
directory's without problems but a laptop that has been
returned from overseas and is now connected to the domain
cannot access shares on the XP/2000 machines with the
exception of the servers. When attempting to connect to a
share or shared printer he is presented with a prompt to
enter password for IPC$ share. Appart from connecting to
shares everything else seems ok, antivirus signatures
update ok and the outlook client can connect to the
exchange server.
I have tested the user account on a different 98 pc and it
works ok.
I have removed and reinstalled LAN drivers, file and print
sharing and TCP/IP settings.
On a host 2000 PC I have checked the netlogon service is
running and dropped the LSA restrict annonymous registry
setting down to 0. I have created a share with everyone
full control for share permissions and security.
I have checked that the ICF service is not running on a XP
machine.
I have seen some articles on the web regarding net use
with the user switch. Is this to used on the client pc or
host. The 98 client doesn't recognise /user: as a switch
but the 2000/XP pcs do. Net use \\pcname\ipc$ will give a
prompt for password but I don't know what password it
requires, I have tried local administrator account and
logged on user, even network administrator.
Any ideas why 1 pc should be affected and others connect
without problems.
TIA
Regards
Paul

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> XP config - error messageTHANKS IN ADVANCE !
error message :
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windows\system32\config\system
you can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original Setup CD
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair
I have purchased a Toshiba Sattelite 1135 laptop with Windows XP Home "imaged"
on the system by Toshiba. I have the 'Windows Authentication" sticker on the bottom of the laptop with the CD Key code. However Toshiba says they cannot send me the Original WIN XP Home CD version.
I have tried to use a different WIN XP CD but it this system does not recognize the CD, then loops back to the error message. I tried "safe mode" and no luck. It seems the system only wants to recognize only the particular Win XP CD on my PC (?) If I buy a new version will I wipe all the huge volume of data on my PC ?
... any suggestions GREATLY APPRECIATED ... Pat Martin

Windows XP >> No Network Connections, Network Wizard, Etc.
Hi!
Seems I have lost the LAN network connection I had set up on one computer.
Start Menu shows Network Connections as (Empty). I thought I could just
"Add" a new network connection, but apparently that Wizard must had died
along with my LAN entry. (Could have been a result of a recent MS Update,
but I really don't know (ie, wasn't paying much attention). How do I
restore these vital files/services?
Thanks in advance.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Unmountable_boot_volumeMy laptop recently crashed and now will not reboot in any mode (safe, etc.).
In discussion with Toshiba support, they suggested I allow it to come up and
display the error code. Specifically it's
Unmountable_Boot_Volume
Stop: 0x000000ED (0x82F91900,0xC0000006, 0x00000000,0x00000000)
Now, I'm not naive enough to think this is salvageable. I'm already about to
purchase a new laptop. What I'm wondering is if there's any way this can be
made to boot - say from floppy - so that I can copy files off to a memory
stick. I can get into the bios and have it boot from floppy. I just don't
know if that's even feasible or if I should just wave goodbye to this
machine.

- Windows XP Support >> Unable to get XP to refresh directory when inserting a new CDROMWindows XP Home edition (5.1 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158: sp2) on a HP a830n.
About 10-20% of the time, when I put a new CD into the CD-ROM, explorer
still shows the content of the last CD. It does not read the new CD.
Browsers, 3rd party application, even the DOS prompt still returns the
content of the previous CD. Refresh does nothing. F5 doesn't help. Even
trying to 'eject' the previous CD and then putting in the new one doesn't
help. So far, the only solution I have is to reboot the system, obviously
not a solution at all. And an impossible solution when the problem shows up
while trying to install a multiple CD program -- the program asks for the 2nd
CD, I put it in, but Windows keeps telling the program that it's still the
1st CD.
HELP! I contacted HP support, but all they did was try to get me to reboot
the box.

- Windows XP Support >> Corrupt Registry?I'm running XP Home SP2 on one of three networked Dells. Computer was
sluggish, especially opening IE7 so I installed Uniblue's SpeedUpMyPC
and it definitely ran faster. Surfing on that high, I stupidly
installed their RegistryBooster and think it may have scarfed up some
OS registry entries. I used the RegistryBooster restore feature, but
it didn't work. I tried a system restore and it didn't work.
The computer boots and seems to operate fine, but what when I go into
My Computer and try to enter the C drive, I get the flashlight and some
head scratching for at least 60 seconds before it opens. Also, IE
update will not only not update, but I can't get the computer to
acknowledge the downloader install and I'm in an endless cycle of
missing or corrupt files. I've seen a message telling me I need to
reinstall COM + Event System and that my Networking settings have
become corrupt. A system scan with Network Diagnostics gives me WMI
Errors.
My Computer Guy tells me I need to wipe the hard drive and do a clean
install of the OS and reinstall all my programs. Obviously I'd
really like not to have to reinstall all my programs. Does anybody
have any advice on how to proceed from here? Can I do a repair install
with the Reinstallation CD without affecting my data or programs?
Thank you,
Betsy
