- Windows XP Security >> Do Not Disable Security Center Service (if you use Dial Up)Hello Folks,
You should follow Doug's advice to disable the Security Center service
only, if you do not use dial-up (meaning you have a (cable) modem
which connects to the Internet as soon as you start Windows).
If you disable the Security Center service (or set it to Manual), you
will get an error 711 when you try to connect to the Internet. If you
try to start the services "Remote Access Connection Manager" or
"Remote Access Auto Connection Manager" manually (since they don't
run), you get this error message:
Error 998: Invalid access to memory location
You will be unable to connect to the Internet until you have the
Security Center service restored.

- Windows XP >> Web Page problem !I always book my travel on line with a local company. There has been no
problem until about 6 months ago, when I went to the web page in order to
book, but the company page came up with a fault on the the company web site
and therefore I could not book the travel. However, this fault comes up
every time I go on the site now. When I contact the company I am told that
the site is up and running, and there are no problems. I can then go to my
daughters laptop, located in the same house, connected to my PC via wireless,
and I can access the site, and book the travel.
There is obviously something going on in my PC, but I do not have a clue
what it is. Can anyone assist me with this please?
I have deleted the cookies and the temporary internet files etc, but problem
still there.
Cheers,
Mark.

- Windows XP Setup >> Boot.ini FileI am running WinXP operating system.
When it is loading, I get the message:
"Invalid BOOT.INI file, Booting from C:\Windows\"
I have searched my HD's for the Boot.ini file, but it is not there.
The computer seems to run fine, I just get the message when loading the OP
system.
I do not see this message on my other two computers, both running WinXP.
Is this a problem?
What is causing it and how do I fix it.
Thanks for the help.

No - the appwiz.cpl is in the System32 folder - and I just=20

- Windows XP Support >> XP sound issuesI'm also having problems with my desktop machine. I recently downlaoded
an update for my intergrated VIA chipset, and since then the audio on some of
my windows programs won't run. The sound card still works, as I can play
MP3's just fine, but as an example, my shareware MVP Backgammon game with
.wav files won't play the files during gameplay. The files are fine, as I
can play them by selecting them in media player, but they won't play during
at runtime.
I checked to make sure that the sound was still checked in the game and
it was, so it's not a setting. I also tried rolling back the driver, but
that didn't work, either. Any thoughts?

- Windows XP >> Need help fixing unstable systemHi, first here is my current configuration, then I'll tell you what my
problem is.
AMD Athlon XP2000+ processor, 1.67 ghz
512Mb ram
Nvidia GeForce 4 TI 4600 video card, 512Mb video ram
WinXP Home edition, SP1 plus a bunch of update patches
Directx 9.0b
Nvidia detonator 44.67 video driver
Media player version 9.0
Late last summer my system started flaking out and crashing. I first
thought it was software problems, so I browsed the Microsoft Update
site, and that's where I picked up the variety of update patches. (I
had installed SP1 about a year prior with no major problems.) The
problem got worse until it finally became obvious that my RAM was
dying. I replaced the ram and that fixed the problem for the most
part.
However, since then my system still crashes when I try to run The Sims
or when playing DVD movies in Media Player. It's fairly stable as
long as I don't do those video-intensive things. That tells me it's
some sort of video problem. I asked for advice on guru3d.com.
Someone suggested I upgrade to the current versions of directx and
nvidia drivers. (I was at directx 8.0 at the time.) Of course that
didn't help and AFTER I had already done it, someone else posted that
older video cards like mine don't work well with Directx 9.0b. And I
saw where it says you cannot un-install directx 9.0b. Doh!
I'm now at a point where I'm pretty sure I have a good version of the
video driver. I don't know what's the best next step to take, though,
which is why I post here. SHould I attempt to remove the directx and
reinstall 8.0? Should I attempt to remove all those sundry update
patches (leaving SP1 of course)? Should I wipe the machine and
install everything from scratch?
Basically I'm still not quite sure what's crashing my system, although
I have it narrowed down to those three possibilities. I'd rather not
wipe-and-reinstall if I don't have to, but I can certainly do that if
you think my system is pretty well hosed.

- Windows XP Support >> Problem with holding key down..........see insideWhen you normally hold a key down, it will type the same letter
[number] across the whole page. Mine won't.. it types it once, then I
have to let up on the key, wait a second or so and press again, etc.
If I am typing along using different letters, it goes right along, but
with a word like "room", then the two o's get hung up, in my having to
wait inbetween. It's the same way with the backspace key.. one at a
time, with a second in between... any thoughts?? TIA

- Windows XP Security >> Using XP-Pro firewall to prevent MP3 downloads??I have 12 new XP-Pro machines in a high school library. Despite
typical warnings some students manage to get an MP3 download running
in the background.
The school is mixed Mac/PC and the servers and system proxy/firewall
are Mac, with little/no active support person.
Can I configure the XP-Pro firewall on a per-machine basis to block
downloads of a particular filetype?
Any other ideas on how to block MP3 downloads?? Others must be having
this problem, and hopefully have some solution other than outmoded
approaches involving 30 Cm rulers (Here in Actually Metric Africa) and
knuckles, like when I was in 5th grade. That was a real long time ago!

- Windows XP >> upcoming hard drive failureTwo days ago at work when I started my win xp pro system, it hung for a
while at the startup screen trying to find the primary master hard drive
then went to a blank screen that said press any key to reboot. When I did,
the system booted up ok. This happened two or three times (but not every
time I started the computer).
Then yesterday when I started the computer, the start-up screen found the
primary master quickly but a warning appeared that said, "imminent hard
drive failure- backup and replace hard drive- press f1 to continue.."
When I press f1 the system starts up ok and appears to work fine, but since
today, this warning message appears every time the computer is turned on.
The hard drive is not making any unusual noises (yet), and the system
finishes booting ok and appears to work without problems.
A co-worker seems to think that it has a virus in the fat tables, but this
is a standalone video workstation not connected to the internet.
I just rebuilt it three weeks ago when I upgraded the motherboard and I used
the 40 gig hard drive that had been my video drive as the c drive, and added
a new 80 gig drive as my new video drive. The 40 gig drive was partitioned
and formatted by win xp before installing the os.
I have built about 20 computers already, so I am not totally new at putting
computers together, but this is a new problem for me. In the past, when a
hard drive has failed, it has just stopped working and the computer wouldn't
even start.
Does this sound like a hard drive failure coming on or could it be some
virus type of corruption?
Would running something like norton utilities help me find out what's going
on, or even repair the problem?
And if I did a copy and paste of my entire c drive over to the video drive,
and then replaced the c drive, could I simply copy the files back to the new
c drive and avoid having to re-install everything from scratch?
Thanks a lot for any advice.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> No Firewire and unreliable WMMI bought a lead for firewire connection, connected and was instructed through
a series of steps to capture video from a Sony Digital video camera - great!
After playing about with the clips and getting my head round WMM I decided to
repeat the process of capturing the video from the Sony device. When i
plugged in the firewire lead i noticed there was no 'new hardware' message
and when i try and use WMM to capture the video it tells me it cannot see it
and to make sure i am plugged in/conected etc. Now i cannot capture video at
all, nothing happens when i plug in the firewire and WMM keeps sending the
same plugged in/switched on/connected type of message.
I have managed to download from a sony Digital Video camera and have some
clips on my WMM collections to fiddle about with. Sometimes WMM lets me open,
adjust, play, create and record all the usual you might expect and other
times it does not and if i persist it sends an error message and crashes the
program.
All i want is to be able to capture video via my firewire connection, and
use WMM to edit videos.
Any assisstance greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> I thought the protection for a private folderHello everyone!
After many many mistakes (apparently not enough) I kept all my data folders
on a separate drive letter on my system.
I just completed a full format on my C: drive.
Before starting the formatting, I took care of removing my user account
password, thinking that this would automatically remove any protection to my
files safely stored in D:
Surprise! My folder is now locked.
:-(
I'm sooooo worried that I will not have any access to ALL My files! ;-(
Can anybody help?
Thanks from a wary "not-so-new" user!
