reinstall some Windoiws files from my installation CD.
However, I was asked for a password and because I could
not remember setting, one after three attempts (including
entering a blank) Dell Techincal Support advised me to
reinstall Windows, which has been a nightmare and very
time consuming, and caused data loss.
(1)If I have set a password but forgotten it, what
workarounds are there?
(2) How do I get to change the password?

weeks with a small window with the title: "End Program"
that wants my 'OK' to end 'explorer.exe'. I don't have
any program running at that time and don't understand
it. How can I change a possible (?) setting to eliminate
this nagging screen?

- Windows XP Security >> Registry EditingA problem with one of my Outlook Express passwords (unresponsive to correct
passoword for one identity) pointed me to an identified problem on the MS
website directing me to edit my registry - regedt32. Though I was signed on
as a user with computer administrator ability, when I got to the next to last
step in the process - selecting "replace permission entries on all child
objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects", I received an
error saying "Access Denied" "Unable to save permission chanes on [my key
number]". I don't know how to get past this. Is there someplace I have to
go to unlock the registry?
p.s. any other ideas on how to get past this password block in outlook
express?

finally after about 5 minutes get to my computer and it
opens giving me access to my drives. help!

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> DV captureI have a DV camera with TWO separate audio tracks on the tape. Is there a capture utility that will render both audio/music tracks? Setting the camera to play 1, 2 or mix doesn't do it. The firewire connection is only pulling audio track 1 either way.
What we have is DV wedding video with audio on track one and music already on track two. Trying to pull track 2 out via analog sound board and re-digitize/sync is not a workable option.

- Windows XP >> Send to function not workingHi
For some reason my "send to" function in Internet Explorer has stopped
working. Whenever I try to email link or a page to anyone, I get a
Microsoft window titled "Microsoft LDAP Directory". This window has spaces
for a server name (the default is "null"), then it has a space for Port,
showing 3268, another space for user name showing "null" and a greyed out
space showing password.
any suggestions??

Saw in the newspapers a critical vulnerability in Windows
XP where it says people should download a patch from
Microsoft.
If automatically receiving patches regularly re: high
speed internet connection, do I need to download this or
is it already done.
How can I determine whether a particular security patch
is applied so that I don't have to do it again.

I'm having trouble with ICS on two-computer network, both running XP
SP2.
After running the Network Setup Wizard, and making additional manual
configurations:
The host is configured with:
IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: <blank>
DNS Server: 203.xxx.xxx.xxx (as per ISP setup instructions)
The client is configured with:
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server: 192.168.0.1
* ping 192.168.0.1 works OK.
* BUT ping, say the IP address of Google, 216.239.39.99 fails (Request
timed out).
* Checking for Winsock corruption using the netdiag tool finds no
corruption (the test passess successfully).
* File/print sharing works perfectly; can play games across the
network perfectly.
* Firewalls (Windows and ZoneAlarm) have been disabled (on the host).
However, the Internet cannot be accessed from the client computer.
I'm baffled, any suggestions?

- Windows XP Update >> Windows Update: Incomplete Country ListAfter updating Win XP Pro today, a new widget tells me that my copy has
'an invalid product key' and provides a number of options. For me the
obvious option is to pay the money ($149), get my current copy 'validated'
and receive a CD by mail later.
The option starts with a drop-down Country List for me to indicate where
I am. PROBLEM: THE COUNTRY LIST IS INCOMPLETE AND HAS NO
'OTHER' OPTION. I cannot proceed. As far as I can see the list omits all of
the countries in the North Pacific (all of them Ex-US Trust Territories for
goodness sake, independent since the early 80s), as follows:
Micronesia (Federated States of Micronesia)
Marshall Islands
Northern Marianas (Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas)
Palau
I notice that it also omits East Timor, independent since 2001. It probably
also omits others.
Is this a satisfactory situation for MS? Do you think it projects a desirable
impression of MS's comprehensive World view? I an hopeful that MS
will proceed ASAP to rectify this deficiency, so that I and many others out
here in small countries can 'regularise' our MS software, get snailmail sent
to us and so on.
Suggestion.
(1). Nominate one person in MS to assemble and maintain a complete list
of the World's countries (try National Geographic, or if that doesn't work,
the Times Atlas of the World)
(2). Load that list onto one of MS's master servers and replicate it to all of
the other MS web servers, so that the same correct dropdown list appears
in all appropriate MS web pages.
Request.
It would be both heartwarming and reassuring to receive a human-
generated reply to this email, and hopefully a later one telling me that the
country list is now complete, so that I can regularise my Win XP Pro.

I am running a gigabyte 7n400 pro board athalon xp 2800
dual channel 512 mem
I went into the bios and selected "load optimal defaults" and the macine
would not reboot, and kept going back to the screen which asks options on how
to start windows. No matter what option I select it continues to reboot. One
time a screen came up stating that I was missing setupdd.sys , a file. I read
up on this and began to swap out memory and remove all pci cards, all this to
no avail.
I also tryed to load "fail safe options" in the bios and still get the
reboot every time.
Some one suggested running windows repair which I have tryed and when I get
to that point it asks me to insert the floppy into drive A.
I do not have a floppy, so in talking to comp usa I was told that since I
have a
"upgrade" of windows Xp Pro the repair option may not be on the disk. But on
the full version (he has it) the repair is there. Dont know if this is true
or not. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this. I have tryed all
logical fixes, and have not been able to run repair as everytime I do it asks
for the repair floppy.
This in not recovery consloe either, I tryed that with chkdsk and was told
that an unrecoverable file was missing. I for marital reasons do not want to
do a new install as all data would be lost, yep no backups

When the computer boots up a message appears that the
Winlogin.exe is not found in C:\Windows\system32. How do
I correct this?

Are you sure the file name is "winlogin.exe"?
Or is it "winlogon.exe"?
"winlogin.exe" does not appear to be a valid Windows file.
"winlogon.exe" is a valid Windows file.
Do you have XP Home or Professional?
Did XP come pre-installed on this computer
or was it an upgrade from a previous version of Windows
or did you do your own clean install of XP?
I am asking this to see what kind of XP CD you have in
order to see if we can expand "winlogon.ex_" from the
i386 folder on the XP CD.

Run a complete virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program.

- Windows XP Network >> Wireless Connection Shows Connected But Acquiring IP AddressI've been asked to look at a laptop which has got a problem with the wireless
connection. The Windows wireless utility shows that it is connected to the
wireless network but it is constantly acquiring an Ip address and cannot
connect through to the Internet.
I've swept the machine for malware and I've run LSPfix (which repairs
Winsock) but the problem still remains. The problem isn't Router specific as
I've tried it with different wireless routers.
Can anyone advise?

seem to remedy this situation. Configsys.exe shows up
blank, missing file... same with registry window. I
tried to use system restore to before I did this deletion
but it will not restore - what now? Any suggestions
before I have to re-install my entire operating system?
I was in the registry to get rid of internet installed ad
files.(as per step by step instructions from Norton web
site) Every time I open Internet Explorer I have to wait
about 5 minutes until the pop-ups finish before I can do
anything on line. If I try to continue before all the
pop-ups finish I encounter an error and IE has to shut
down. This is what I tried to fix in the first place!

- you know the email server is working and no firewalls are
active - yet still won't connect to server no login error
messages just - "cannot connect to server"
Create a new xp profile - it will make the profile - create
the email account under the new profile in outlook express
- it will work then go back to the original profile and
then retry outlook express - it now works. you can now go
and delete the second profile -
this step seems to scan and repair the files used for
outlook express and worked when sfc /scannow didn't repair
the files can someone explain why.

- Windows XP >> Technical problem: computer crash after clean installHi, I have a computer to repair, but I can't figure out what's the problem.
The guy had WinME and installed an "internet accelerator" software (in fact
it was probably a virus). The computer started crashing shortly after that.
I tried installing Win98 from scratch, but it crashes right after setup
reboot!
I tested the RAM with TuffTest, and it appears to be OK. I tested the hard
drive surface with scandisk, and it appears to be OK. Before installing, I
deleted, recreated and formatted the partition. The Win98 setup goes without
any problem. It reboots, shortly after, I get a blue screen. If I try to
reboot, I get all kind of random weird errors, as if the RAM was damaged...
What could be the problem???

the modem is in the same phone line as the phone. I have
an internal modem so i cant just turn it off. I have
turned off 'wake on lan' in the bios but it still come on
when the phone rings.

- Windows XP Hardware >> NT 4.00 workstation printer problemI have a small office network where the printer is
attached to a computer running windows xp home edition.
One of the computers in the group runs windows 4.OO
workstation and I cannot print to the printer. It tells
me that the xp computer does not have the appropriate
driver to run the printer. I go into the nt computer to
install the printer and it tells me that i need to
install the driver locally since the xp computer doesn't
have the driver. I go through the steps and it ask for
the location of the driver with an .inf extension. The
driver provided by okidata doesn't have that file
extension and the computer won't accept it. I have
searched the xp disk for this file as well as the nt
disk. Where can I find this file to get the 4.00
computer to print to the printer that is attached to the
xp computer?

halfway through the "installing devices" part, it stops
responding we I retry it stops responding in the same
spot. Can you please tell my why this is happening and
what I can do.

We have a user who has purchased a new system that came
with XP Pro OEM. Their old Machine has Windows 2000 retail
on it as well as all of their programs and DATA, they are
missing some of the original installation media for some
of their critical Apps, so a clean install is out of the
question.
I clone the disk from the old system onto the drive from
the new system, and get it running (drivers etc). I pop in
the XP Pro OEM CD, and low and behold, it will not let me
upgrade the existing system to XP Pro.
How do I get around this - The customer is licensed for
both XP Pro and 2000, so this should be a totally
legitamate process.

I would appreciate it if anyone could help me resolve this. I downloaded
several updates and during the updates I received this Windows File
Protection message. It states that necessary files have been replaced &
that original files need to be restored. It says that the location from
which the files should be copied
C:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386/controls.man is not available. It says to
insert XP KB900725 Source Files. I haven't had any success locating a fix
on MS website.
I have not rebooted since the download. I would appreciate any help on
fixing this if anyone has a solution. THANK YOU

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> How do you totally remove a program from WinXP Pro?I used Norton's Clean Sweep to remove a program from my computer. I went to the file folder and removed the remaining files and folders, then I went to REGEDIT, and went to Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall, and deleted the key for the program I wanted to uninstall. I have rebooted, gone to the control panel/add_delete programs, and it still shows in the list of programs, but it does not have an option to remove it. It just says, "Used ocassionally"
When I try to install a new version of the software that I am trying to delete, I get the message that a previous version of this software must be removed before I can install the new version. How do I remove this program from my computer completely?
