Can a limited account be managed through an administrator account?
Can programs be selected for the limited account? (ie internet, email, etc)
How? I haven't found any relevant info in the help files on the computer.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Accidentally deleted Movie Maker applicationWhile i was cleaning up my desktop, I accidentally deleted my Moive Maker
application, thinking it was just the shortcut. I tried to recover it but the
file is already gone. I would go to tech support but I'm on vacation and my
product ID is at home.
Is there any way I can get another copy of the application?

please reinstall a copy of this file.
Can someone please help me? Can I bypass this file or restore it. I don't
have my original setup disk. I have Windows XP home edition.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Extending Basic Volume....Help RequestedThis would seem like it should be so simple to do, but I have yet to figure
out how to do it.
I just purchased a Thinkpad R51 laptop that was a student laptop configured
for university use. It's has a 40 GB hard drive, which was partitioned into
two parts: 14 GB Basic partition (C: drive with the XP OS) and a 24 GB
partition (D: drive with university stuff on it). Maybe I acted too rash,
but I went into the administrative tools and deleted the partitioned D:
drive and it now shows up as contiguous unallocated space. I expected I
would be able to use XP admin tools to just extend the C: drive into the
unallocated space making one partition over the whole drive. However, when I
used the command utility diskpart to select the volume and then use the
extend command, the operarion fails with:
Diskpart failed to extend the volume. Please make sure the volume is valid
for extending.
Upon further research it appears I can't use the diskpart tool to extend a
system or boot volume. Isn't there an easy way (or at this point even a
difficult way) to accomplish this? I just want one basic partition allocated
over all the space on the disk that I can label as C: with documents,
programs, and OS. (I only have 300MB left on C - running out of space fast.)

- Windows XP >> Reboot issueWhenever I attempt to log off I get a message on the screen END PROGRAM -
EXPLORER.EXE which I have to end manually to get my computer to reboot. Any
suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

- Windows XP Support >> USB Flash Drive Malfunctioned on every computerMy USB Flash drive does not read on any computer I hook it up to, so it
is a problem with the Flash Drive, other Drvies work fine on computer.
Is there anything I can do to recover files? And what could have
happened to the Flash Drive? It lights up when its first connected, and
it takes about 20 minutes intill windows reports it as a malfunctioned
device.
Any Help with greatly appreciated, I got important cadd files on the
Flash Drive.

- Windows XP >> Unable to start programsI am operating with windows xp. Suddenly I am unable to
start any executable programs. Anything that uses a .exe
command will not work. I receive message saying it cannot
find the file and to check its path (which I have). I
have done the following:
-I have the newest patches available for windows
-I ran an online virus scan and found one problem file
which was..
"bkdr optixpro.13" located in "windows/system
32/mpldfg.exe"
it was unable to clean this file and recommended it be
deleted which I did.
-I checked the knowledge database in windows and found
what appeared to be a similar problem which was
attributed to the "Pretty Park" virus.
-I did a file search for any of the suspect files in that
virus and found none.
-I also booted with Norton antivirus 2003 and did a virus
scan that way.....results were negative. I cannot load
the programs since the setup uses an .exe file.
HELP....any help would be appreciated.

- Windows XP Hardware >> HUGE Problem! Please help!A few days ago, my PC gave me a shutting down prompt and it turns itself
off.
Now, as long as the PC is plugged into the wall, my PC will boot up by
itself, starts up for 3 seconds and then shuts itself off. I was unable
to start the PC back up manually.
Then after 15 seconds, and it starts booting up by itself for a few
seconds and shuts off again. This keeps happening as long as it's
plugged in. I unplugged it for a few hours, but as soon as I plugged it
back in, it started booting up by itself again and shutting back down
continuously.
I replaced the power supply today, but nothing has changed. It is still
giving me the same symptoms.
Can anyone help me?

balloon message to install updates on the weekend, it was SP2 I installed it
no probs. I have no problems at all with anything else at this point
except....
if I am doing an email and want to add a text attachment from a file I
can't. I can open the file but it won't show what is in that file, just blank
screen. I can add pics but not text. How do I fix this???????????/

- Windows XP Network >> LAN anomaly?I am having trouble sharing folders/files between two machines,
networked together via a router.
Both are WXP PRO SP2.
On machine 2, MyNetworkNeighborhood allows me to display & change
machine 1's C drive and its folders/files.
On machine 1, Machine 2's content is not displayed at all under
machine1's MyNetworkNeighborhood.
I have looked long & hard, but find no reason for this to be
happening. But what I have discovered is that I can 'MAP' a drive
letter on machine 1 to the C drive on machine 2, and access & change
machine 2's folders/files that way.
So why is it that I can access machine 2's folders/files on machine 1
by using its map function, but not through its MyNetworkNeighborhood?
I'm confused. Can anyone suggest where I might look to solve this
problem?

- Windows XP Support >> Windows XP Registration/Activation QuestionA roomate and I shared a compter while we were in school. He bought all the
hardware and I bought all the software, with the understanding that when we
went our separate ways, we would each keep what we had paid for.
I can't get a hold of him now, but I'm sure he has the computer setup &
running the copy of windows xp I bought. I am thinking about buying my own
computer, but I'd like to reinstall XP over Vista. I have the original discs
and everything.
Obviously Microsoft will not let 2 copies of the same program be activated &
registered. My question is, what will happen if I install and try to activate
XP. HOw will it authenticate that I am the disc holder? Will he (roomate) get
a message saying his copy is no longer valid? Do I need to dig up a number
for him, so I can contact him and tell him to 'erase' his copy somehow? What
is the process?

a loop and restarts.Got a blue screen that said system was shutting down to
protect files.Suggested changing vga adapter.How??

Please be more explicit.
What boot up? First after installation is complete? Subesequent boot and
you have registered XP?
It may be possible to start up in safe mode and 'remove' the display adapter
using device manager then reboot and allow XP to 'find' the new device, then
install the correct display adapter.

off or shut down the screen goes from blue to black and
then some of the desk top icons or whatever was on the
last opened window reproduce and are visible against the
black background.

loads and then when you go through the sequence of menus freezes (for example
on User Accounts), occasionally it gets through it all but the icons and
graphics are displaying the IE cross suggesting it can't find the files. Has
anyone else had this problem or does anyone know of a solution?

- Windows XP Network >> recommeded wifi for basestation only?What are your recommendations for a wifi basestation that wont be used as a
router, preferabley one that you can still configure when it's not in
routing mode without a bunch of trick, so I can set mac filtering etc.
I had an MN-500 but I was never able to successfully integrate it into my
physical network, the wifi computers would only see each other but not the
network. Part of the problem may have been simply because the device was
failing, it would not reset anymore.
If it makes any difference, I have a Netgear FVS318 as our router

- Windows XP Hardware >> Network devices in registry that do not show up in Devices or My Network PlaceI was changing the IP on my one and only NIC, and XP prompted that the IP
was already assigned to another device! Sure enough, there was another
device with that IP in my registry in current control set - but it WON'T let
me delete it!! It is probably a left over from another NIC I had installed
for testing/troubleshooting. When it asked if I wanted to change the IP, I
said no, and it works fine, but how do I get rid of these phantom devices?
(this is not the first time I have seen this - seems to be a particular
problem with NICs)

- Windows XP >> Display properties problemWhere is the display properties information stored. Is it an inf file?
Something is really hosed and I can't seem to fix it by deleting the Matrox
drivers.
I changed the font size from the default 96 dpi to 115% and the resolution
changed to some ungodly low number where it's impossible to see the entire
display properties window on the screen. Not being able to see whole window
I cannot make changes.
When the display gets like that is there some other way to make changes.
The only way I could figure was to do a repair install. Then I tried to
change the font dpi again and the resolution once again changed to some very
low number just as before.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> CPU usage by NTVDM.EXEMy task manager shows that a file in my Windows System 32
folder called ntvdm.exe is using 95% of my CPU
constantly. This causes all of my other programs to run
very slow. When I tell it to "end" , my computer operates
aparently fine and much faster. Everytime I restart my
computer, however, that pesky ntvdm.exe restarts also.
I'm not sure what that program is used for but I'm
reluctant to remove it permanently from my Windows System
32 folder. Does anyone know what this file is and whether
it can safely be removed from the system 32 folder?

Hello folk.
Hope you'll forgive the crosspost, but I'm not exactly sure where
to post. Therefore, please, feel free to redirect me if you know
of a more likely center of experience. Last time I came on with
a question I ended up feeling pretty dumb for not knowing the
answer: I'm hoping you folk can do that to me again, but ...
<g>.
I also hope someone will have the patience to wade thru this
missive. I tried to keep it short, but, well, it just doesn't
seem to be in me to do that.
SYSTEM:
GW 700XL, P4, 2.6 GHz, 512 RAM, 2 80Gig 7200 rpm internal (not
RAID), 1 160Gig ext USB, XP Pro/SP2/Hotfix, Off XP, AV, Spyware,
etc., all updated & were current yesterday, 27 Jan 05, event logs
running, fair amount of peripheral equip: AV stuff, scanner, 2
printers, etc. etc.. Nvidia Gforce 5200/TV out, max video RAM,
all equip in use, 56k dialup 'net connection. Not simultaneously
of course. LAN is turned off/disabled, not being loaded.
SYSTEM STATUS:
Everything is functioning with a small but important
exception. No obvious problems with any specific application.
Everything functions re apps, so - that leaves OS, HW, or ME! I
think.
PROBLEM:
For some time, a very occasional spontaneous reboot would
occur. Messy, like the power cord was pulled - black screen,
keyboard off, no lights, etc.. But, after a few seconds it would
restart as though it had done a cold boot. Error message
indicating a Serious Error Occurred would appear, click OK and
boot continued normally and loaded windows. Not using multiboots
either; only the one OS.
Forgot about bootlog.txt until just now: Will turn it on next.
Event Logs all running.
For a long time it seemed to have no pattern but then
apparently I woke up enough to notice the pattern; it was simple,
and is repeatable every time.
HOW TO REPLICATE PROBLEM:
Clicking for the Summary tab on any Properties view which
includes a Summary, sets up the necessary condition. Upon
LEAVING the Properties window, whether by Cancel or OK, causes
the spontaneous reboot. Click, nothing happens, then about three
seconds later, it acts just like the power cord had been pulled
from the wall, and about another three seconds later initiates
what seems to be a full bootup from scratch.
RESULTS:
-- The Serious Error message already men tioned above, and
-- Sometimes partial rearrangement of desktop icons and/or Quik
Start icons in the Taskbar (lower left side) and
-- Other unpredictable but so far always minor setting changes
with one or two exceptions. Never any actual damage or
corruption I'm aware of. For instance, once it completely
rearranged desktop, single-click setting back to double click,
and once the entire thing re-defaulted. Every customization (for
the OS, not apps) that I had set went back to default. Weird; to
me at least. Apps like Office, etc., did not reset.
EFFORTS TO DATE (2 days):
-- Two to three weeks ago, I did a Repair install of XP, just
for grins, but they kept happening now and then. I make a fair
amount of use of the Summary tab in Properties for various files.
-- Backed up System State and all data.
-- I'm pretty confident there is no virus/Trojan/spyware etc..
Norton System Works, Adaware, Spybot, two others I can't recall
at the moment, oh, spyguard, and another. All known good, clean
applications used by many fellow spamfighters on Spamcop.net.
-- ALL cookies, temps & TMPS removed, completely cleaned every
account & manually verified. ONE file, perflib_perfdata_xyz
cannot be removed and so is ignored. I cannot seem to figure out
what it is, but the "xyz" is always different, and it's owned by
the OS. It's been there ever since I can remember. There are no
apps which, to the best of my ability, are not known-good,
known-safe apps installed. Most recent install was a reinstall
of Partition Magic 8 several months ago in the spring. Norton
Systemworks 2005 about the same time.
-- Systemworks says Registry is OK, and has been all along.
There WAS a Program Integrity problem Norton found, but it fixed
it and it didn't seem related to anything and changed nothing.
-- I've run every diagnostic I have and a couple I downloaded
yesterday, to no avail. All the hardware, including temperatures
looks fine. Nothing's sputtering, UPS shows no power line
disturbances, no brownouts, no blackouts in over 30 days. Last
time UPS came on was mid-Fall - power dropped for about three
minutes.
The Event Logs don't show anything especially helpful. There are
a couple of Medium errors, but they always seem to straighten
themselves out either in successive attempts or next Restart.
I purposely caused the spontaneous restart to happen four times,
today. Each gave me the serious error message during the boot,
but;
-- First time, all OK.
-- Second time, some icons on left side of screen spread out,
Quicklaunches were rearranged, not by Name or anything obvious;
just rearranged.
-- Other two, nothing special that was eye-able, at least.
While I had the error message on the screen, I opened Notepad and
grabbed the error report data and saved it to a file. As you
likely know, as soon as you close that error dialog, the files go
away; now I see why: The last line of the script is to erase all
the data. Dumb move in my opinion!! It took me a LONG time to
figure out why I couldn't find that error data when it even gave
me the path to the actual filenames! Someone at MS should be
forced to drink a (your favorite here)!
So, if anyone thinks it would be useful, I will share those, or
even create more for testing, but I think they're all about the
same thing. I caught everything from the manifest.txt to the
.DMPs and the XML source. The XML source, though long, looks
pretty useless - it's just a bunch of machine ID's and ends with
an error message at the end where the machine quits, apparently.
I think one was about 49k, the other 140k, both text HTML files.
If I were to write a synopsis of this right now, about all I
could say is that it's a software problem causing something to
act like the power supply goes bonkers. But nothing points
towards that when I dig into it. I think I"m too close to the
problem by now.
Soo, if anyone likes a challenge out there, I'd be more than
willing to accept/debate/try/take under advisement/use/brainstorm
or otherwise make use of any input. I'm at a standstill for
ideas; all I can do for the moment is poke around and hope
something jumps up at me.
BTW, I'm no guru by any means, but I do know more than the
average joe on the streets. I have no fear of tweaking things as
long as I can satisfy myself that I think I might know what I
think I might be doing <g>. So, if you start talking about
DCOM(bobulators) et al, you're likely to lose me, so treat me as
an intermediate, not a power user.
Soooo, if you're looking for a challenge, have I got a deal for
you!! <G>
