- Windows XP Security >> Redundant Automatic UpdatesAutomatic updates keep reinstalling the exact same update
over and over (it's a Security update for XP-KB835732.
This has been happening over the past few weeks
(actually, just since the new Win Updates website went
up). A few times, I've let it completely run through, but
it's just getting old now. It's been prompting me to
install this update AGAIN about 6 or 7 times a day now.
Any thoughts/help?

- Windows XP >> Problems setting up wireless routerI've set up two wireless routers before but am having problems setting up a
third. When I try to set up the box using

The router was previously used on another computer system so was previously
setup.
Anyone have any idea why it's not communicating?

- Windows XP >> IE7 - should I "upgrade"I've been keeping half an eye on IE7, (I understand it went "final" a little
while ago ?), I haven't been offered it via automatic updates, (I have that
set to download updates but, let me choose when to install them etc.), so
does IE7 come along by itself or do I manually have to go and get it ?
Should I bother to get it ?
Will security patches continue to be released for IE6 ?
Obviously I would Ghost my drive before installing it, in case it decides to
be unhappy implanting itself in my Windows XP Home ed. platform that's
oldish ! ...damn! no label on my drive C:\ ...I always label my boot-drive
with the date" ...anyone know how I can find out when I installed XP Home
ed. the last time ?

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Help! How do you change languages?Recently I downloaded the Creativity Fun-pack, and the problem is I
accidentally downloaded the German version. Now Movie Maker is displayed in
German, even when I install english add-ons. Is there any way to switch it
back to English?! I was hoping I could just re-download from scratch, but the
way Microsoft has it set up, that seems impossible...I'm getting desperate!

- Windows XP Hardware >> Kofax cardI have had the pleasure of being given the project of fixing our
Scanner PC's. We run a Kodax DS 7500 scanner connected to a pc running
Win 95 via an Adrenalin 1700 s Kofax card. the program that does our
scanning is a third party software program which does some barcode
recognition. The problem as I understand it is that we have previously
been unscessful in getting the scanner, pc and program to work together
under an operating system later than win 95. Apparently there have
been issues getting the barcodes to be read.
The third party software developers tell me that it is because the
Kofax card cannot read barcodes under a later OS.
Is this true? Any suggestions? unfortunately there is a lack of
documentation and/or knowledge here.
Appreciate any advice.

- Windows XP >> Is a memory manager worth the effort?i have an Intel 4 3.2 GHz, 250MB cache, and 2 GB of RAM. Page File is set to
'suggested' size of ~ 3 GB.
Question: Would purchasing a memory manager be worth my time and money?
Seems like just another program intecepting data traffic, which seems it
would slow down overall performance. But they claim to speed up the PC
performance.
What's the real story?

start normally until I get the screen wallpaper
(microsoft picture of a field) but no icon and no task
bar. It stays like this for a few minutes and finally it

Any idea what happened? Could it be related to norton
antivirus or internet security? or what?

- Windows XP >> Backup not backing upOkay, maybe I'm missing something here. I have an HP
C1553A 24X6 DAT tape library, installed in a stand-alone
server running XP SP1 and all the upgrades, and trying to
back up local and network files. The Backup runs, but
the only thing that it recorded to tape are the folders
themselves, and not the files within, which does me no
good. ANy ideas? I've checked every possible setting,
and nothing looks like it is out of line.
Please email to phil@lacefield.com as I'm rarely on these
forums.
Thanks in advance for any help!

- Windows XP Network >> VPN server unable to disconnectI have a home VPN--Desktop (DT) as server and Laptop (LT) as client. The DT
is hard wired through a router, the LT is wireless through the router, and
the connection works very well in both directions. The problem starts when
the LT disconnects from the VPN, the DT then is unable to make a standard
internet connection. The Cntl Panel>Network Connection shows connected
however, I get the "cannot connect etc" when trying. I work around this by
rebooting and then everything works fine. Suggestions as to how to fix this
problem.

- Windows XP Security >> need access to user (not administrator) settings with runasWe have a Windows 2003 domain with Windows XP workstations.
We have a group policy in place that restricts users from accessing
the Internet Properties page.
We are now adding some new settings to the GPO that will change
various settings in Internet Properties.
I would like to be able to check to see that the changes have gone
through, and to see what settings are in place in the users computers.
My problem is that when I use right-click and shift Internet Options
in the control panel and choose Run As, and enter the user name and
password of an administrator, I get the Internet Properties of the
administrator. This is obviously not helpful as I'm looking for the
user's settings.
I have tried using the runas command from the command line, but
neither the /env or /noprofile switches prevent me from still getting
the administrator's settings.
Even if i run regedit (which is also blocked for users) using the
administrators credentials I get the registry entries under Current
User for the administrator.
As we are just beginning to implement Group Policy restrictions, I can
see this being a problem with many settings that are user specific.
Does anyone know a way to allow access to restricted applications and
control panel applets, while still showing the settings of the logged
in user?

- Windows XP Support >> Export e-mail from Outlook?...I have been using Outlook for quite a while now and have always exported to
a CVS or Excel file when backing up. It's not bad, but viewing e-mail on a
spreadsheet and losing all the attached files is not the best solution.
Are there any good solutions out there? I have a "Save Mail" folder I'd like
to back up every so often and be able to search and read through it. Even if
it exports all the e-mails into one long document, or PDF, that would be
great. Ideally I would like to save the attachments too but that is less
critical.
I believe Outlook stores in mbox format? So maybe a tool that works with
that. Or with Outlook's archive format. Anyway...just looking for a good way
to export all my emails to a normal readable file..thanks!

- Windows XP Setup >> Sysprep Mini-setup mangles Boot.iniI use Altiris Deployment server to deploy images. I was forced inot using
Sysprep by XP SP2. After syspreping and pulling the image I can check the
boot.ini file and it is correct, but after deploying the image it runs
through the mini-setup and cannot find the Windows forlder onthe last reboot.
When I looked at the Boot.ini file it is missing part or all of the text. I
have overcome this wiht server deployed images by copying the Boot.ini file
in as part of the final configuration, but when pulling the image I have to
boot to another OS (WinPE) and copy a new Boot.ini in. Has anyone else had
this problem? Does anyone have any idea where I might be making a mistake?
