My PC is set to go into standby and later hibernate but it keeps waking. =
The WOL is disabled in the BIOS but is there a box in network =
configuration I have to disable.
This may not even be the problem, I have covered my optical mouse but =
that didn't fix it.
It wakes up about every 15 mins, any ideas? I can't be the only one with =
this problem.

- Windows XP Setup >> .Net FrameworkI have XP Home Edition and Windows Update tells me I need the .Net Framework.
I use the computer mostly for pleasure, reading, emailing friends, etc. Do I
really need to download and install this or will an application alert me when
I attempt to download that application I need to install the .Net Framework
for it to work properly? Thank you.

- Windows XP >> Missing "Add or Remove Programs" list in Control PanelI've a friend who has this problem on Windows XP notebook. When he goes to
Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs and clicks on that, only a listing of 3
programs is generated. His scroll bar on the right indicates there are more
(a lot more) but they don't appear on his screen? Any ideas on what can be
done to recover the list?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> CD IMAGE .......Please Help !!!!I really hope someone can help me, when using the CD
Burning Wizard to burn some critical files I accidently
moved them instad of copying them, yes I know how stupid
that was.....
The CD wizard said it wrote the files succesfully but the
disk can not be read in any drive now, is there any way
to recover the CD image it created anf burnt..... I have
tried everything I can think of any help would be
appreciated....

download....but will show as read when I click on them. unable to access the
new message function also...my ISP informs me that the problem is not with
them, but with my computer..a Dell Dimension 4550, 3 years old.

- Windows XP >> OT: XP seems to have stopped responding to scriptsThis may not be the right forum for this question, but I was not quite sure
where to post it.
This has occurred recently with no updates having been made to the PC.
It was first noticed with BitComet, my torrent download app, which was
giving scripting errors all the time. I updated it to the latest release,
but the problem remains. Whenever I change view in the app, I get a script
error dialog.
The other thing I noticed is that while I was looking for BitComet using
Google, the search button would not work via a <return> key press. This
always used to work before. I had to use the mouse to click on the search
button to instigate the search.
Is it possible that my PC may be demonstrating scripting problems that is
causing these issues? I have Sun Java installed. Does anyone have any ideas
what to do?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Can't kill processes with Task ManagerXP Pro with 1.6G processor and 256M RAM and All in Wonder
Radeon 7500. Hangs every couple of minutes when apps are
opened (Dreamweaver, or Outlook, or Illustrator,
etc...pretty heavy programs). Task manager shows 100% CPU
usage with these programs, and won't let me kill them...no
response when I hit end process. I have to reboot. Hangs
when I try to run spybot and norton. Any ideas? Hate to
have to reinstall...Thanks

- Windows XP >> Command line : how to get the .cmd file name I'm runningHi,
I wrote a.cmd, which calls b.cmd. Both a.cmd and b.cmd are located in the
same directory (in fact, in the same UNC share). I don't want to tell WHERE
to find b.cmd, because if I change the server or share name, my script won't
work any more. How can I do this ?
I tried to use %CD%, but it seems that if the startup directory is a UNC
share, it is unusable.
Maybe there is a way to get in a variable the complet filename of the .cmd I
am running : this way, I could run a path command to add the server/share
part to the current path. Besides, I could use the filename part to generate
a log file, such as %mybatchfilename%.log.
Can anyone help me ?

- Windows XP Support >> long bootxp pro takes over 3 minutes to boot. I looked at the boot log and it is
over 28,000 lines long. It keeps trying, over and over, to load several
drivers and codecs. When it does finally boot, all the hardware that
goes with the unloaded drivers works perfectly so I haven't a clue what
is going on.
I'm running SR-1 with all the updates.
Hopw someone has a suggestion.

- Windows XP >> Lost Flag key + F to go to FindHi All,
I was doing some tweaking (tweak ui), and needed to get to find.
I did a Flag key + the F key, but Find All Files did not come up.
Same with Flag key + R for Run.
I know I can go to Start, Run or Start, Find, but I much prefer using
the key combination.
Anybody run across this one. What did I do that I can undo to get
these shortcuts back.

- Windows XP Network >> SP2 makes computer access network shares as guestI just installed SP2 on an XP Pro machine. All patches up to date. Now when
this machine tries to access network shares on other computers in the domain,
the network connection is made as "guest" rather than the domain user name I
am logged in with. This does not happen with numerous other XP Pro SP2
machines in the domain, and is the first time I've seen this happen in
numerous installations of SP2. Prior to installation of SP2 this machine
always made network share connections as the domain name/user name. I'd like
to fix this rather than dump SP2. Notes: Windows firewall is disabled by
group policy on all computers in the domain. The computer in question had a
network folder mapped in Explorer at the time SP2 was installed. And
suggestions would be appreciated.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> XP Performance Very SlowOne day I opened up over 14 internet explorer browsers
(about 3 weeks ago) at which point it would not allow me to
open up anymore. (I think a "low on virtual memory" warning
may have come up then) Also at that point, loading IE
browser windows and browsing from page to page became
extremely slow and still is extremely slow. Send/Receive
with Outlook is also very slow although it is relatively
quick to load Outlook. Netscape is slow to load, but quick
to browse from page to page. I am not sure what is causing
the problem. I have tried anti-virus, anti-spyware,
anti-trojan and they've turned up nothing. Other computers
on my network have not reported any of these problems. Any
help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so
much in advance.

Windows XP >> Event log error 4226
I've got one pc on the network which has an awful lot of event id 4226
"TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent
TCP connection attempts"
I've Googled this and I understand that changes were made to tcpip.sys in
the service pack install so this is by design but I don't understand what is
the cause. The machine in question has no additional or unusual software on
it compared to another and a virus scan and malware scan show nothing.
I've downloaded a patch to fix this
(http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads) but I don't really want to
apply the patch without understanding why I'm getting so many 4226 events.
Any thoughts?

- Windows XP >> unable to open filesWhen I try to open a file from a web page, my screen
comes up blank. The word done does show up in the lower
left hand side. And I have tried to right click to save
target as... into my desktop and when that is complete, I
click on the icon on my desktop and it is still blank.

- Windows XP Security >> Outlook Preview Pane and Virus Attachment InfectionHello, I am in the IT field and I am confused whether previewing an email can
infect you with a virus. I cannot seem to get a clear answer after talking to
5 different people. Most say you should not preview messages because it can
launch viruses, but my understanding of attachments does not jive with that
concept. I believe previewing is the same as opening the email. I
understand that in order to view the attachment, you can choose to download
and view it, otherwise the Preview pane will not show the content of the
attachment. If the attachment is a .exe type virus for example, the exe will
not run unless I choose to open it, so how can a preview window launch the
exe? Or perhaps current vectors are more creative and can infect me in other
ways more creative than the just cited simple exe example? If you view the
file, you do not execute the attachment...that has been my experience.
However, if the message itself has embedded code, then it is a different
matter. Am I correct? Please help.

- Windows XP >> XP startup and shut down dialoguesHi
I just reinstalled Win XP but now when I boot up I get the password prompt.
I leave the password blank but it always asks. Then, when I shut down I get
a dialogue i've never seen before asking me to choose from a drop down list
of shut down, standby, etc.
Previously I only slected shut down on the start bar then there were three
options as buttons, not a list.
I do i get rid of what I have?

- Windows XP >> ldp-200 from LexarI have a ldp-200, a mp3 player from lexar media working with sd cards, but
windows xp doesn't recognise it. It work fine on mac os and windows 2000,
but it is shown as an 'unknown device' in xp's device manager. Lexar says
the device is meant to work with a generic driver. Somenoe has an idea?

- Windows XP >> Cant Delete Old Temp FileWell there are these 5 files that where in C:\Documents and Settings\(My
sisters Old acount)\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\Random temp folder. I just cant Delete them
I have tried Everything. safe mode+cmd, Windows recovery console,ctrl alt
del Explorer.exe then CMD.With all these i have CD'd into the folder where
the files where and i clearly see these 5 files called _ , _ , 0 , x , and r.
all these are five different files = to 0kb but since its under Fat32 it
shows them as 448kb. When i try to delete them using all these methods
including system recovery it tells me "cannot find file C:(insert directory
her)/x" and that includes all five files. I did manage to cut and paste the
Folder so it can be easier to access so i cut and pasted it to a folder
called "C:\luis". The reason I want to delete these files is because I need
to convert my file system to NTFS but it wont let me because of these files
causing a corruption. THis is rediculous and i hope i can fix this without
reformating my hard drive. So anybody got any ideas??

and can't seem to find this problem......]
I have an el-cheapo 64MB thumb drive purchased off eBay. (This fact,
I realize, might be the answer to the issue......)]
When files are deleted I don't recover all available space. To prove my
point
I formatted the drive. WinXP (Home) showed 60+MB available. I copied
32MB of data onto the drive. Then deleted all the data. WinXP then showed
52MB available and 8MB used. There were no files/folders visible in
Explorer.
(View/Options is set to show all files.)
Anyone know why this is happening?

- Windows XP Hardware >> new DellI just received a new dell with windows XP Pro. I have
installed a couple of new software that was necessary for
work, and have attempted to set up the network on it with
the other Gateway in the office. Now when I go into
windows explorer it shuts down as soon as I try to click
on something, and on both computers when I try to use run
it will not do anything and will just go back to the
desktop. Also, on the networking we had ethernet setup
on our computers and was working fine until my computer
crashed and I replaced with the Dell. Now mine sees the
other computer but it doesn't see mine. I used ping and
it went through to mine but when we try to log on it says
there is not a network.
Any help with these problems would be great.

- Windows XP >> direct cable connectionI get the message "the network path not found" When I
enter the name of the host computer. On a Windows XP
computer as gust and a Windows 98 computer as host with a
direct cable connection on the parallel ports that is
connected. If some one can give me some ideas on what to
do next I would appreaciate.

- Windows XP Network >> Sharing USB external hard driveI have a basic Windows peer-to-peer network that I've been using for quite
some time now. I have the following:
1 computer using Windows XP Pro SP2
2 computers using Windows 98SE
1 laptop using Windows ME
I recently purchased a Seagate 160GB USB 2.0 external hard drive. I
connected it to the XP Pro computer since it is the only one with USB 2.0
ports. I tried sharing it across my network, and all appeared to work
well, the 98SE computer I had time to test was able to connect and read and
transfer files to the external drive. However, I do not want to leave the
external drive connected and turned on 24/7. When I tried to disconnect it
from the the XP Pro computer I got a message that files were open and make
sure they were closed first. No files were opened at that time, I believe
I got that message because the 98SE computer was still connected to the
share on the external hard drive. I believe it's similar to the message
you get if you want to reboot a system with shares that says "X users are
connected to this system and may lose data if you reboot... yada yada
yada". So, I tried to unshare the external hard drive, which didn't work
well, it sort of hung the system, so I ended up hitting ctrl-alt-del and
ending the application for the USB hard drive. This freed up the XP system
again. And I was able to disconnect the hard drive.
However, this morning, when I tried to access the 98SE computer, it dragged
very badly and I'm not sure if it's because of releasing that hard drive.
I don't remember if I checked it afterwards last night (sorry). A reboot
got it working properly again.
So, is there a way to share this hard drive without having these types of
problems? Any info is greatly appreciated. It just would be nice if I
could share the drive, rather than transferring files I want to copy to it
from other computers over to the computer the drive is connected to.

- customize >> disable logon screenI have a machine running XP pro with two accounts,
Administrator and ASP.NET for my .NET. I would like to
start the machine without clicking on the administrator
account. witch has no password , so every time I start my
machine will start my programs with out me clicking on
the account.
any info on that?
