- Windows XP >> downloads failRecently, when tyring to download, they fail becuase a file in c:\doc~\owner~\tempxxx "could not be saved". i.e XP can't create a temporary file to save the download ???
permissions on that path seem OK. I can create a directory in that path.

- Windows XP >> Black screen on start upI formated my C: drive, and then did a clean installation
of windows xp. The installation went fine, but there is
still a small problem. I have not installed any programs
in windows yet, so I am kind of stumped. Not everytime,
but probably every 2 - 3 times that I restart my
computer, it will freeze on a black screen with only the
mouse present after the windows logo screen. I cannot
press ctrl alt del to restart the computer, instead I
must hit the power button and shut it down. Does anyone
have any advice?

- Windows XP Support >> Coded symbols box appears after WindXP default loading screenWe have 3 computers on our home network. 2 computers (XpPro & XpHome) have
developed the following problem on Windows loadup. The computers boot, we
see the default WINDOWS XP loading screen, followed by a blank screen with a
rectangular box. This box has symbols in it menu bar and another coded
symbol in the upper left of the box in the subject area, followed by an OK
button at the bottom. If we click the X to close the program nothing
happens, if we click the OK button, windows proceeds to the Welcome screen
then loads to the desktop.
What is this box, how do we get of rid of it, and why did it happen on the 2
computers?
Any help and info would help, as this is very aggravating at each boot up.

- Windows XP >> Problems with fax cover pagesI'm new here, so I hope this is right place to ask.
I use WinXP, SP2. I am a book reviewer and editor, and I have a need to
send faxes regularly. The fax capability in WinXP has worked just fine, up
until yesterday.
For some reason beyond my understanding, all of my personal cover pages have
disappeared! I've done everything to try to find them -- searching for
.cov, for the name of the cover page, etc., but nothing.
I know I haven't erased them -- I use them all the time. Does anyone have
any idea what's happened? Naturally, I looked in the recycle bin and
they're not there, either.

above the taskbar and filled with green dots when I did a

- Windows XP >> error messageI am using xp and I am set up as an Administrator... when
I try to go into msconfig or virus scan I get this
message "RESTRICTION.. Cancelled due to restrictions in
effect on computer, contact administrator" Please
help!! I have not changed anything so I am guessing a
virus or someone remotely accessed my machine and set them
self up as the Administrator....

- Windows XP >> windows not genuine after 3 yearsYou know you got to hate microsoft, after three years of using xp which is
Dell oem, I get the message today windows not genuine. This cute little star
comes up and all. Well according
to my COA my version is not counterfeit. Now here comes Vista with all it's
new genuine checking shit. Not a chance in hell will I purchase it. BTW I
called Dell to inform them they
are selling pirated copies of xp. I also purchased the machine directly from
Dell so no middle persons involved. Just when you think you are save, along
comes microsoft.
I am not looking for any questions or answers, I am just going to change the
drive out and
go with Linux.

- Windows XP Network >> XP Home not connecting to SBS 2003Dear Group,
I'm Having trouble connecting a notebook computer running WIN XP Home to
our office server running WIN SBS 2003. I'm hoping that you can give me
some tips on how to trouble shoot the problem. Allow me to tell you the
story so far.
I installed a Netgear wireless network card on the notebook computer
last week. I followed the installation instructions without incident
and I'm able to connect to the Netgear wireless router. When I check
the router configuration page, I can see the notebook is logged into the
router.
Now when I try to map the network drives on the server, the notebook
says that it cannot find the server. Also when I try to log on to the
Internet through the router, I can't. Any thoughts would be greatly
appreciated.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Boot Screen Rolls/SpinsWhenever I boot my HP the Windows XP and HP screens roll/spin (which ever way
you want to put it). (This problem has been happening for a year now.)
Whenever I run a check disk, it does the same thing and I noticed that once
it does it a while, say rolling the right, it will slow down and reverse. But
it never eventually just stops, even after it "warms up". Is there any way
that I can fix this? Thank you!

- Windows XP Support >> Windows XP Locks up When Right Clicking a FileWhenever I right click a file in Windows XP, I get the hourglass icon and
nothing happens for several minutes. If I wait long enough, sometimes the
system resets, sometimes I get this "Dr. Watson has encountered a problem and
needs to close" message.
Any ideas on how to fix?

- Windows XP >> wrong charactersCharacters appearing when symbol keys are used are not
those on the keys; i.e., one may get a tilde instead of a
quote, or some weird non-English symbol for a semicolon.
The question mark is non-existent. Letters and numbers are
not affected. I have checked to ensure U.S. English is
selected as the language. How does one correct this?

- Windows XP Network >> Searching info sources; IMDB searchHi all,
Got a bit of a problem here. The problem is a software
that holds a record of all my DVD's and extensive
information about every movie like actors, director, plot
etc.
ok.
Now my problem us that I am supposed to be able to perform
what they call a "Search Info Sources" that is that I am
supposed to be able to search(from the software on IMDB
and more alike) any title and then automatically retrieave
all the information plus pics.
This is not possible in my machine and I was wondering if
any of you might have some suggestions:
Technical specs;
WIndows XP Service pack 1 + more(updated today on windows
update)
Connected to the internet through a cable modem
Static Ip address
not using a Firewall
Please send me mail if you have any thoughts ;)

i only have a 56k dial up, so i can only update when i'm online with a lot
of free time and it suits me.
well my net connection crashed during my last download, and i think its
trying to carry on everytime i'm online, well at least my laptops trying to
D/L something anyway and i dont know what.
i've tried stopping all auto-updates and everything i can think of, but its
sucking up my connection speed, as i'm sure you can imagine, its taken me
about 20 minutes to get this newsgroup site up.
anyway to stop the downloads?

My IT group was helping me set this up today with the lap
top in a docking station and it appeared to be working
ok. Now I'm undocked at a remote location and it doesn't
recognize the log-in.
I've tried every possible combination of letters and
numbers
Any way to get in to the systems???
Then I can turn of the alt-ctrl-del funcition in the
future.

Iâ??ve had some problems getting the computers to print over the network. I
can with one wireless connected computer but not another. All PCs run WinXP
HE SP2.
Hardware setup:
I have 3 computers (each running ZAP) attached to a KCORP KLG-575 wireless
router ( 2 wirelessly and 1 via ethernet cable). The router has an inbuilt
hardware firewall which I use on default settings ( the routerâ??s firewall not
its security settings). The router is connected to the internet via a DSL
modem (D-Link DSL-300T).
My zone settings are:
Network (ADSL modem): internet zone 192.168.1.0
Wireless router: internet zone 192.168.1.1
Computers 1 - 3: trusted zone 192.168.1.100 / 101 / 102
Is this correct, or should I put the router on â??trustedâ?? also?
I know I strictly donâ??t need a software firewall for incoming packets but I
want to lock down as much as I possibly can.

first hard drive, D: - CD burner, E: - DVD burner. It
will only let me name the new hard drive F:. I want the
new hard drive to be D:. How do I change the drive
letters on the CD and DVD?

knew what it was. in order to do a lot of things with my
computer i need it. i got the file from a friend but the
files still will not acknowledge that it is there. what
do i do in order to use wowexec.exe to run my programs,

- Windows XP Network >> Two net connections (NICs): how does XP choose?I have an XP Pro system on an Ethernet LAN connected to a router which has
an Internet connection. I just installed, in addition, a wireless
connection to the same router. To test the wireless connection, I pulled
the Ethernet cable from the XP system, and used IE to browse to a site it
hadn't seen before. It worked -- cool! But now after I reinsert the
Ethernet cable, I'm wondering how XP chooses which of these two connections
to use for TCP/IP (e.g., web browsing). In a nutshell: two NICs -- how
does the system (or is it applications?) choose which to use?

- Windows XP >> I want to stop something running on start upI have a problem... Netmeeting remote desktop sharing programme always
appears in my task bar when I start up. It's not actually activated but I
don't want it starting up. It does NOT appear in start up. Can anyone
help?

- Windows XP Setup >> Windows XP config errorI have Windows XP which was supplied on my Acer PC without a setup disk, just
recovery disks which wipe everything.
On booting I get a message "Missing or corrupted file
windows/system32/config/system"
It then asks me to reinstall it using the windows xp set up disk which I had
never had. How can I repair this ?
I have looked for a download of the xp set up disk, but can only find a
floppy disk set up which requires the cd rom to complete.

- Windows XP Network >> ICS client can't dialICS client can disconnect but can't dial. All other network functions seem
to be OK.
In client connection attempt, modem makes all its noises and modem log shows
connection for 0.4 sec. Modem logs same for Host connect/disconnect & client.
Set up:
Desktop connects to internet through dial up modem & is ICS host.
Desktop connects to LAN using MN-730 PCI adapter.
Laptop, using integrated WiFi adapter, connects to desktop via MN-700
configured as access point.
Both machines have XP Home. Situation same with XP firewall on or off.
Machines and adapters have latest updates.
Computers can ping each another.
Have tried both manual and wizard ICS set ups.
I'd appreciate any insight offerred.

- Windows XP Setup >> internal modemI have an external modem, and am getting a modem card. With my external
modem, if there is a problem, which I can tell by looking at the lights,
I just power off the modem and power on. I believe that with an internal
modem, one has to reboot. Is there any way other than rebooting to shut
off the internal modem in case of some problem?

- Windows XP Security >> Network connection config - wireless and wiredDoes anyone know of a way to prevent a user from connecting wireless to a
network if they are already hardwired to a network or visa-versa? I would
like to do this seemlessly without any user intervention. I want it to be as
seemless to the user as possible. Prefer not to use "wired" and "not wired"
profiles.
