- Windows XP >> Windows XP books with trial?Hi there,
I'm wondering if anyone knows the name of a book that comes with a trial
version of Windows XP (professional, or home edition, it does not matter). I
read that the 180-day trial is no longer available for download from
microsoft.com, but that there are a few books that come with an XP trial CD.
Thanks.

- Windows XP >> Setup.exe won't InstallI'm having problems installing a Program ( Norton
SystemWorks Pro 2004 ) onto my computer.
My operating system is Windows XP Pro SP1, I have plenty
of disk space and memory, so that can't be it.
Whenever I try to install the SETUP.EXE Folder it doesn't
do anything, no sound, no nothing.
I've actually have gone as far as to change the name of
the folder by adding an extra extension to it so that it
looks like ( snswsetup.exe.exe ) . I know dumb idea, but
it worked. At least for a moment or so until it stopped
with an ERROR message that reads ( "Norton SystemWorks
Pro set up has stopped because of an error") I've looked
at the logs in the Event Viewer and there are 2 errors
that take place, they are as follows; ( Type; Warning!,
Source; MsiInstaller, Event; 1015, Description; Failed
to connect to server. Error: 0x800401F0). The other is;
( Type; Information, Source; MsiInstaller, Event;
11708, Description; Product: Norton Antivirus-
Installation Operation Failed ).
Can anyone help. Thank you in Advance.

- Windows XP >> Local Group added to local Administrators groupHi
We are using Windows XP clients in a Active Directory. With the use of Group
Policys we have created a local group named "LocalAdmins" this group is then
added with Group Policy to the local Administrators group. The reason we do
this is to autmaticly add some groups to the local Administrators group.
But members (Active Directory Members) of the local group doesn't get local
administrator privileges.
How do I get members in a local group wich is added to the local
Administrators group to get Administrator priviledge by only adding a local
group?
Please Help

Windows XP Update >> Product recovery after SP2?
I think when I updated to Windows XP Home, SP2, it did something to my puter.
I tried to reformat using my Product Recovery CD, and it said it was for a
different machine, even though these are the product recovery CDs that came
WITH the machine!
I was told that SP2 changes something so that the Product Recovery CD
program no longer recognizes the computer? Can this be so and how do I get
the Recovery to start? It simply says WRONG COMPUTER and aborts!
It is a Toshiba M30 laptop that came with XP Home pre installed.
Any ideas how I can reformat and reinstall it all back to square one?

Windows XP Update >> Product recovery after SP2?
Bob;
No, the recovery CDs may be hardware dependant.
But since they wipe the drive of all software, nothing SP-2 does can affect
that.
Your problem lies elsewhere.
Have you changed any hardware on the computer?
Try cleaning the CD and drive.
Otherwise contact the computer manufacturer.

Windows XP Update >> Product recovery after SP2?
Do you mean to actually clean the little laser glass on the CD drive? The CDs
themselves have hardly been touched and always kept in their cases. And as it
is a laptop, I haven't changed anything re hardware, except to add a USB
Flashdrive and a router to activate the wireless? Could this have anything to
do with anything?
Thanx

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> creating a music videoHi all--
I would like to add a "music video" to the end of a
birthday film I'm making. Here's how I'm doing it and it
seems to be working, but I thought maybe there was an
easier/better way you all could let me know:
I play the song and have people sing it. I do this from
several angles and with different people, etc...all using
the same song file that they're listening to.
After I import the video files I lay down the audio of the
same song on the audio track. Then I mute all the clips
and arrange them in the order I want and "nudge" them by
clipping until they seem to match up to the audio overlay
track.
It's a bit tedious, but it seems to be working. I know, I
know...if it ain't broke don't fix it; so maybe I should
leave well enough alone, but is there an easier way that
someone would suggest??
Thanks!

- Windows XP Setup >> High page file usage despite tons of free RAMHi, I have recently installed an AMDx2 with Win XP Pro x64. From the off the
box was sluggish. I put this down to it only running on 1GB and plugged in
another 2GB of RAM, ie the box now has a total of 3GB of RAM. Performance
remains sluggish, however. I am highly suspicious of the memory management.
Whenever I look at task manager, there always appears to be 2GB of free mem,
ie it will not seem like the m/c using the available memory. Moreover, right
after boot-up with next to nothing running, the m/c begins to use the page
file. I read somewhere that XP by default creates a page file 1.5x the size
of available RAM. Well, my box has a page file of 1.44MB... Just to be
clear, when I look at My Computer/Properties/General, it shows 2.93GB of RAM.
I tried things like /PAE in boot.ini to no avail. Does anyone out there
have any ideas?

- Windows XP Support >> Can't delete this value from registry, HELP!OK,
I've got this totally weird problem. I get the following error message
when I boot my laptop.
Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll The specified module
could not be found.
I know this is the NVidia Control Panel. Problem is, I have no Nvidia
card on my computer. When I try and delete the corresponding registry
key,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and delete the entry
NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
it will delete, but as soon as I re-start it's back and I get the error
message.
There is no Nvidia driver in the add/remove programs. I've also tried
using Hijack This to remove the key and the same thing it mysteriously
re-appears. I tried removing it in Safe mode and after the second
re-boot it's back?
Any suggestions, I'm totally stumped. BTW there were Nvidia drivers on
this system at one time, but have since been deleted.
Please Help

- Windows XP Network >> Peculiar Yet Critical Network ProblemWindows 2003 Server, Windows XP. I have a very peculiar problem. All the
systems in my network, except two, can access (ping) two of my network
printers. I have a new Dell server and a desktop station that cannot ping
these two printers. The server and desktop can ping every other addresses
and
printer, just not these two. It is not the switch I am plugged into, as I
have tried my laptop on the same ports and can ping everything. What might
be causing this problem of two systems not being able to ping just two
addresses, when everyone else can ping these addresses?
P.S. I ran into this problem as I was trying to connect my network printers
to my new server. Two of my four printers connected just fine, but two did
not. That is when I tried the ping and found it did not work for the two
printers. Help!

- Windows XP Support >> Wireless keyboard causing screen instability?I'm having trouble with screen stability in all programs that display full
screen, including internet explorer, my computer, MS word, MS Excel, eudora,
etc.
Just recently when I opened one of these programs the screen would jump
around up and down. Most times the display would go to the end of the
document or whatever was on the screen and I could not get to the top of the
page with the scroll bar or any other way.
In my computer the display would go up and down and seem to flicker. When I
clicked on a photo from the file list file viewer would open but the photo
would seem to get larger and then smaller.
When I disconnected the keyboard things would stabilize.
Earlier I had a problem with the keyboard missing strokes. When I checked
keyboards on control panel and highlighted the wireless keyboard it would
revert back to the keyboard that's part of my notebook.
I'm using XP SP2 on an HP pavilion zt3000 and wireless multimedia desktop
1.0a. I have the wireless desktop plugged into one of the usb ports on the
back of the notebook.
When I did a check on the keyboard the batteries are OK and checks say it's
working OK. I downloaded a driver update when I first started having trouble
(keyboard not working correctly) that didn't seem to fix the problem and now
I have the new screen instability problem.
Does this sound like I should just dump the optical desktop?

- Windows XP Hardware >> CDROM Stopped working after XP reinstallI recently replaced my DVD/CDRW drive as it stopped working. The new one is
an LG "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4320B" and worked perfectly when first installed.
There were no driver updates required and XP recognised it straight away.
I have just reinstalled XP Home (from the CD) and the CD drive appeared to
be fine at first, but now fails intermittently when reading large files from
CD. There don't seem to be any driver updates and the hardware is recognised
OK.
Does this mean a second DVD/CDRW has gone wrong on me in a few months, or is
it a driver/configuration issue?
Thanks for any help

- Windows XP Support >> Need 2 row height on taskbar, with Quicklaunch as wellI usually run 12-16 windows open at any one time. Also find the
quicklaunch toolbar exceedingly useful.
I have yet to find a combination of toolbar settings which allow for
the open programs taskbar to be 2 or more rows high, and coupled with
quicklaunch.
I can set the open window taskbar to be 2 rows high, and lock it with
autohide just fine. But once I enable quicklaunch, my 2 row windows
taskbar is back down to one row with teeny windows all bunched up to
sort through squeezed into a single line. So how might one get a
double row window taskbar and have quicklaunch enabled as well?
TIA for any ideas.
