- Windows XP >> System Restore and FirewallMy firewall in XP somehow became disabled. I can't seem to
enable it again. I get a message saying, An error occured
while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled. The
dependency service or group failed to start. I posted my
system restore problem awhile back but couldn't address
the solutions because I don't even have a system restore
tab in my system properties. I can disable it in
Administrative Tools\ computer management\ services... but
it will not restart. Do I possibly have a virus or worm.
Any help will be appreciated

- Windows XP Basic >> Not Allowed to runasTo do my job I often need to open command prompt windows as a
different userid. Before upgrading to Windows XP I'd type in Start |
Run the command
runas /user:nw\userid cmd
and it would open the command prompt window. Now that I've been
upgraded to Win XP, when I try this I get the error:
C:\Documents and Settings\brian\>runas /user:nw\userid cmd
Enter the password for nw\userid:
Attempting to start cmd as user "nw\userid" ...
RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - cmd
1327: Logon failure: user account restriction. Possible reasons are
blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy
restriction has been enforced.
How do I disable this policy to do my job? I do have Administrator
privilege on this PC. Logging off and back on as the other userid is
not an acceptable solution. Wastes far too much time and company
money.

- Windows XP Setup >> Laptop partition managementI need a step by step listing to repartition a factory NTFS formatted
XPPRO without having to reinstall from scratch and then reapply
patches, configuration, etc. My next step is to apply a boot manager
to the laptop while keeping XPpro happy.
I understand from another newsgroup thread that W2K onwards there are
at least a register key "HKLM\SYSTEM\Setup\SystemPartition" that need
to be adjusted. (see thread 4 at
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&threadm=MPG.191141cddf3a4f0d9896c0%40nntp&rnum=1&prev=/groups%3Fhl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DISO-8859-1%26q%3Dxp%2Bpartition%26meta%3Dgroup%253Dalt.*)
Concerns over Windows Product Activation exist because I have a habbit
of losing software keys. Other difficulties include:
1) the 20G harddisk is not very portable as it is in a laptop with
warranty;
2) I do not have a floppy on laptop. I have spent the money for a USB
floppy on
things like Partition Magic instead.
I do have these additional resources (besides you experts on the net)
1) two firewire ports on the laptop, and an external harddisk case
with firewire interface.
2) A CD burner still usable from an existing desktop. The external
firewire
casing can take that CD burner.
I also have been lucky so far. Using Partition Magic 8 I was able to
create FAT data partitions from the previously single 20G NTFS
partition. This will allow the laptop data to be communicated to older
OS such as W98SE which will be added once the boot manager is up and
running.
I would like to learn from experiences from people in the two
newsgroups (microsoft.public.windowsxp.setup_deployment and
alt.os.windows.xp) who have already successfully done configuration
changes on XP beyond what I have already done. I am very much worried
by reading about XP's hard coded partition information within the
installation.
Thanks in advance for sharing your insights and apologise for
X-posting.

- Windows XP >> My memory's being eatenHi,
im running XP on a partition of my hard drive, along with

the total size of the files inside, it is a lot lower

- Windows XP Security >> No user accounts in welcome screenHere's a puzzler: My daughter's laptop (Compaq Presario
2100 running Windows XP Home) no longer shows any user
accounts in the friendly welcome screen -- so there's no
way to log in. Tried CTL-ALR-DEL twice to get the login
dialog, but it doesn't accept her username/password.
So, I tried booting in safe mode to get the Administrator
account. Alas, there are no account icons in the friendly
welcome screen in safe mode either! Tried CTL-ALT-DEL from
safe mode and typed Administrator/blank for
username/password to no avail. Tried a variety of
combinations of Administrator and Guest (upper and lower
case, etc.) and guesses at the password.
Is it possible that all accounts are disabled (e.g.
someone tried hacking in with wrong password too many
times)??
Have already read Q297221, Q283198, Q292742, Q281798, etc.
Thanks in advance for your assistance. Remember that I
can't get past the login screen, so please don't suggest
anything that uses Start/Run, Control Panel, Regedit, etc.

I'm running a new laptop with Windows XP Pro Service Pack 1.
Sometimes when I reboot the Quicklaunch section of the taskbar is

My system does have the proper folder containing the Quick Launch

Can someone help me?

You can't delete anything from there, you seem to be referring to the
setting under the "tools" menu is that right. If you want to delete some of
your folders or files in "my documents" then select the file or folder &
press the "delete" key.

Dear Neil,
Many thanks for your response. You were right, I meant to delete folder and
files under the 'tools' menu because they appeared in quere figures and
codes, if I can't delete them, can I locate them or trace them somewhere
inside the computer to see what they are? Please advise. Thanks!

Hi,
Still not quite sure what you mean. There are no files or folders under the
"tools" menu. The tools menu contains "Map Network Drive", "Disconnect
Network Drive" etc.
If you are returning to the files and folders in your "My Documents" folder
then you should be able to select the files or folder and press the delete
key on your keyboard & delete the object.
If it wont let you delete it then try starting in safemode and see if you
can delete it then.
Give me an example of the name of the file or folder.

Hi Neil,
Thanks again for your kind response. Perhaps my explanation wasn't very
clear and let me try to explain it again, the location of the troublsome
folder is inside "my documents\tools\folder options\view\advanced setting".
Normally under 'Advanced setting",there should be a Main folder named "File
and Folders" and a sub-folder named "Hidden file and folders", but I had an
extra sub-folder in quere name, something like - æ?¨ è?¹ * å?¯ cmæ?? *(not
traditional or simplied chineses), and inside this sub-folder, there are 3
choices of similar quere names which made me very annoying that I just don't
know which choice I should pick. I hope the above can give you a better
picture about the problem I have. Please advise. Thanks!

I've got it now, I see what you mean. I was thinking your were referring to
files & folders in your my documents folder. These are settings rather than
files & folders. Does anything change if you click on "restore defaults". I
would think this means you have installed (either on purpose or by accident)
a program that has added settings to this list. You may need to investigate
editing the registry and google may help there. I'll have a look myself & if
I find anything I'll post it back.

Neil, I had just tried to click on "restore defaults" but nothing changed,
then I went inside the 'Registry Editor' and use 'Find' to search for the
quere files and folders settings by using the similar quere names but nothing
had been found. You mentioned that I may need to investigate editing the
registry and google may help there, I don't get what you meant "google may
help there". I agreed with you that I might have installed some program that
has added those settings in the list. Anyhow, thanks very much for trying to
help me to solve my problem, and if you have found anything helpful, please
advise. Thanks!

Hi,
I meant a search using www.google.com. I haven't found anything myself
although there was something to do with muicache.
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=muicache&spell=1
I'll leave it with you if you want to make any changes to the registry but
dont forget to backup the registry settings before you do.

- Windows XP >> Cannot format driveI am using Windows XP Home. I want to format a second internal drive. It
does not have an operating system, just data backup. I am getting the
following error message when I try to format:
Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs
that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the
contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.
I closed all programs and system tray icons. I could not close the icon for
Norton Ghost v.9--there was no choice to close/exit. There also was no
close/exit choice for the Norton Anti-Virus icon-just a choice to disable.
What should I do now? Thanks for any help.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Slow start upI purchased a Sony Vaio last year with windows xp home
edition installed pre-installed. I purchased a windows
xp office (professional) package to load on to the PC.
Start up was fine and quite fast. Lately however, it
seems to have slowed down. Often it seems to pause
during set up and hang almost before it continues. What
could be causing this?
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Windows hangs up almost immediately on installI hope someone can help me with this... I'm attempting to switch my
Fedora machine over to XP MCE, and my system hangs up immediately on
the install process.
I'm running a AMD Athlon 64 3000+, Biostar 6100 mobo and a WD 160gb
SATA hdd.
I've got a new, licensed copy of XP MCE 2005, and the boot gives me
the option to boot from CD. I select that, then choose the OS I want
to install. I get the message "Windows is inspecting attached
hardware...", then the screen goes blank and the hdd light stays on
for as long as I'll let it. I keep giving up after 10 mins or so,
simply for fear of damaging the drive.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking about throwing a
ATA-100 drive in the machine for now, and then putting the SATA drive
back in, as I'm guessing that the hang-up simply means that Windows
either isn't recognizing the drive properly, or doesn't like the fact
that I'm using the SATA channel as my only drive and don't have
anything on my EIDE connector.
I could really use the help, as I have no idea where to go from here.
Thanks, everyone.

- Windows XP >> XP Setup (HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!)Hello,
I successfully installed my Windows XP on a ECS K7S5a Pro
motherboard with Athlon 2.1 gig processor. I successfully
used the machine the first time I logged on to my Windows
XP PC. However, I shut down the machine properly, then
powered it up, and I noticed some weirdness (mouse would
not respond when I started up a game I played on the
initial logon mentioned above.
Things got really bad so I ended up uninstalling XP.
When I attempted to reinstall it from the CD, I booted
from the CD and the blue Windows Setup screen came up.
Then a couple different messages came up on the bottom line
telling me to press F2 and then another line said to press
F6. I did neither, and then the F6 message went away, and
I got one of two things:
1- Nothing at all happened (bluw screen with "Windows
Setp" title and no other messages (I waited for 20
minutes).
2-Error message displayed
"An unexpected error (0) occurred at
d:\xpclient\base\boot\setup\arcdisp.c"
I tried many things and got the exact same result:
0- Tried a different XP CD.
1- Purchased another motherboard of the same exact model
and processor type.
2- tried installing with a different AGP card installed.
3- Tried disconnecting the DVD and floppy drives.
4- reformatted hard drive using utilities that came with
hard drive as well as using fdisk.
5-Tried different hard drive
**NOTE**I installed windows 98 successfully, so then I
tried
removing windows 98, and installing XP, but got the
same results!!!!!!!
I do not know what to do, any help would be appreciated!!!
Thanks,
Bruce

- Windows XP Security >> Prblm: Can't get Software Restrictions Policies to work as expectedDear subscribers
I have a problem to get Software Restriction Policies (SRP) to work as
expected. I'm administering a number of computers at a school and I use SRP
to prevent use of disallowed software. My problem is that I find SRP to
behave very peculiar; the way that I think would be the obvious way for it
to work doesn't at all give the expected result. Of course I may have
totally misunderstood things but in that case I hope for a clarification
here.
Our environment is:
- Windows 2000 Server with AD, US version
- Windows XP Pro, Swedish version
I've read a lot of postings in the Microsoft Usenet groups and it seems like
there might exist a bug in Windows XP that was fixed in sp2 that's
concerning Netware shares (Q815471). We don't have any such shares, at least
not as long as they aren't shared as such by default, so I'm not sure
whether this bug applies to us.
Now to a description of the problem; the problem is that the user can't run
applications that should be runable, i.e. the user gets a message stating
that the application was prevented to start due to software restrictions
policies.
Our default policy configuration is to disallow running of applications,
then we specify exactly which applications and in which paths applications
are allowed to run. Our policy list is as follows:
Name Type Security level
%HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRoot%
Path Unlimited
%HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRoot%\*.exe Path Unlimited
%HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRoot%\System32\*.exe Path Unlimited
*.js Path Not allowed
*.jse Path Not allowed
*.vbe Path Not allowed
*.vbs Path Not allowed
*.wsf Path Not allowed
*.wsh Path Not allowed
\\c0047\software$\* Path Unlimited
\\domain.se\SysVol\* Path Unlimited
C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Temp\* Path Unlimited
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop Path Unlimited
C:\Program Files\* Path Unlimited
C:\WINDOWS\* Path Unlimited
The polices are distributed using GPO in the Active Directory.
The strange thing is that some applications installed in "Program Files"
runs perfectly e.g. Office but other third party applications can't start
and I can't figure out why. There are some MS applications, e.g. Notepad,
that doesn't start either.
I've studied the document "Using Software Restriction Policies to Protect
Against Unauthorized Software"
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/rstrplcy.mspx
to configure SRP and in the Troubleshooting section it says that a denied
SRP should be logged in the system event log but this doesn't occur so I can
't get any information here, at least I can't find any log records. Do I
need to do anything special to enable this logging?
Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards, Ola Theander

- Windows XP Hardware >> External USB DriveHello.
I setup an external USB drive as an extra storage area.
I changed the cable to one of the "Zip-Linq" retractable
cables, and the drive is not recognized. I tried re-
scanning hardware in device manager, and re-scanning
drives in drive management.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Windows XP Pro
Service Pack 1.

- Windows XP Support >> XPSP2 Registry Problem - CLSID clueI'm runing a Pentium 4 2.8G Desktop with 160G HD and 512M RAM.
The machine appears to be working fine, except that any tools that scan the
registry (AD-aware, MS Antispyware, Registry Mechanic, Regedit) cause the
machine to re-boot when a particular CLSID is read.
To try to diagnose this, I've been using Regedit and "Find CLSID". I can
cause a reboot by searching either HKey_Current_User or HKey_Classes_Root.
It always appears to be the same key, but which key remains a mystery,
because the machine reboots!
The machine has been virus scanned using McAfee and Norton AV tools in safe
and normal modes and all all identified Spyware using Adaware, SPybot S&D,
HiJack This removed - bearing in mind I can't do a deep registry scan
because of the re-boot problem.
Any help gratefully received.
Best Regards

- Windows XP Network >> Cannot create a dial-up connectionI cannot make a dial up connection to my ISP. I checked my
windows XP configuration. I found there are several places
that seem misconfigured.
1. There is no dial up connection Icon in mt networking
place. I cannot create one
2. There is an advance menu item in the network connection
page, an option called dial up preference is there. When I
click this option, an error message appears, it reads:
error 711, remote access connection manager cannot be
loaded.
3. When I use the create a new connection wizard, I choose
connect internet, along the steps, I choose an option for
configure manually, then in the next step, I do not have
the options for selecting dial up with Modem and DSL. these
options are there but grey out, I cannot select them.
4. I found there are two services that are not started.
One is Remore Access connection manager, another one is
remote access auto connection manager. When I try to start
remote access connection manager, It gives me an error
reading, error 5, access is denied. I am the owner and main
user of my notebook.
My window version is windows XP professional, I did not
install SP1 yet.
Can anybody help me with this? It is very much appreciated.
